Choose your data, calls, and texts separately: on iPhone, set the cellular-data line and default voice line in Cellular settings; on Google Pixel, choose defaults for Calls, Texts, and Mobile data under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. That lets you use a travel line for data while keeping your home number selected for calls or texts—but whether the home line stays reachable during another call depends on the phone, carrier, and calling conditions.
Decide what you need each line to do
Before changing settings, decide which number or plan should handle each kind of use. A dual-SIM phone does not necessarily use one line for everything: supported devices let you choose a data line separately from the line used by default for calls and, on Pixel, texts. These choices affect different services, so selecting a travel line for data does not by itself move calls or SMS messages to that line.
- Mobile data: Which plan should provide internet access when you are away? A local data plan or prepaid travel eSIM may be an option, but its coverage and terms depend on the destination and provider.
- Calls: Do you want outgoing calls to use your home number, your travel line, or a prompt that lets you choose each time?
- Carrier texts: Which line should send new SMS or MMS messages? This is separate from messages sent through internet-based apps, which are not carrier SMS or MMS.
- Incoming calls: Must your home number ring while the travel line is being used? Dual-SIM call handling varies, and the other line may not always be reachable during an active call.
- Charges and coverage: Which plan may incur roaming charges, and does the intended line have service where you are going?
Use those answers to assign the lines, rather than assuming that “primary” or “secondary” controls every kind of traffic. Apple’s Dual SIM guide and Google’s Pixel dual-SIM guide describe separate line controls and device-specific behavior.

Prepare before you travel
Confirm that the phone and plans can work together
Check your exact phone model, carrier, and destination before buying or activating a second plan. SIM formats and dual-SIM capabilities vary by model, carrier, and region. Google notes that some newer U.S. Pixel models are eSIM-only; Apple also notes regional and model differences. If you plan to use two different carriers on an iPhone, Apple says the iPhone must be unlocked. A phone that supports eSIM in one configuration is not proof that a particular carrier or plan will work with it.

Ask the carrier or travel-plan provider to confirm the phone is compatible, the destination is covered, and the plan’s data allowance and activation rules suit your trip. In particular, find out when activation begins: some plans are intended to be activated on arrival, while others may have different rules. Do not assume that a plan labelled “international” covers every country or that its terms are the same as your home plan.
Understand roaming on both lines
Roaming is a plan issue as well as a phone setting. Apple warns that roaming charges may apply when a line is used outside the carrier’s covered country or region. Before departure, identify which line is intended for data and check that line’s roaming setting and plan terms. Also check the home line: leaving it available for calls or texts does not guarantee that those services are included at no additional cost abroad.

Google suggests a prepaid international eSIM as one possible way to avoid roaming charges, with activation on arrival at the destination. That is an option, not a guarantee: compatibility, coverage, activation conditions, and charges still depend on the specific provider and plan. See Google’s eSIM guidance and confirm current details with the provider.
Give each line a recognizable label
Use simple labels such as “Home” and “Travel” so it is clear which line is selected. Apple says line labels appear in Phone, Messages, and Contacts. Labels are especially useful when reviewing call or message controls: a selection labelled “Travel” is easier to identify than an unfamiliar carrier name or a generic line label.

Set up an iPhone
On iPhone, make the data choice and voice choice independently. Menu wording can vary by iOS version or region; Apple’s guide is the reference for the current behavior described here.
- Label the lines. Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions), select a line, and choose its label. Use labels that make the home and travel lines unambiguous.
- Select the data line. In Settings > Cellular, open Cellular Data and choose the plan intended to supply internet access. If the travel plan is only for data, selecting it here does not make it the default voice line.
- Decide whether to allow data switching. In the Cellular settings, review Allow Cellular Data Switching. When enabled, iPhone may use either line for data depending on coverage and availability. Leave it off if you want data to stay on the selected line, and turn it on only if you understand the roaming and data terms for both lines.
- Choose the default line for outgoing calls. In Cellular settings, choose the default voice line. Select the home line if you want it to be the usual line for outgoing calls, or the travel line if that is your intended choice. This setting does not ensure that incoming calls on the other line will ring while a call is in progress.
- Review roaming for the data line. Open the settings for the selected line and check its data-roaming control against the plan’s terms. Enable roaming only when the plan requires it and you accept the applicable charges. Do not treat the phone setting as a substitute for confirming what the carrier bills.
- Check the line used by an existing message conversation. Apple notes that an SMS/MMS conversation started on one line cannot simply be switched to the other line; you need to start a new conversation to use the other line. Check which line a conversation is using before sending, especially if the recipient is expecting a message from your home number.
Apple describes adding a local data plan while traveling as an option, but availability depends on your phone, carrier, and region. Review its iPhone Dual SIM instructions for model-specific details before changing the plan configuration.

Set up a Google Pixel
On Pixel, the Calls, Texts, and Mobile data defaults are separate. The following path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Google says some settings require Android 11 or later; labels and available choices can vary by device and carrier.
- Open SIM settings. Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Confirm that the home and travel lines appear and are enabled as intended.
- Choose the data SIM. Under Mobile data, select the line meant to provide internet access. Google states that “Only one SIM can be the default for data.”
- Choose the line for calls. Under Calls, choose the line you want as the default. If you want to decide for each outgoing call, select Ask every time when that choice is available.
- Choose the line for texts. Under Texts, select the line that should send new carrier SMS or MMS messages. This does not change which line an internet-based messaging app uses for its service.
- Review roaming for the selected line. Open that SIM’s settings and check roaming against the plan terms. Menu details can differ, so use the device’s available SIM controls and confirm billing rules with the carrier.
Pixel dual-SIM formats and capabilities depend on the phone and carrier. Some newer U.S. models are eSIM-only, so check the exact model before purchasing a physical SIM or plan. Google’s dual-SIM support page covers supported configurations and model-dependent behavior.

Know what happens when the other line receives a call
Keeping a home number selected for calls does not mean it will always ring while the travel line is occupied. The ability to receive a call on the other SIM depends on the phone’s dual-SIM implementation and, on iPhone, Wi-Fi Calling and data or cellular conditions. If those conditions are not met, a call to the other line may go to voicemail.
Pixel behavior is also model-dependent. Google says Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro and earlier cannot receive a call through the other SIM at the same time. Pixel 8a and later can support calls on both SIMs when Google’s stated requirements are met. Confirm the behavior for your exact model in Google’s support documentation; do not infer it from the number of SIMs shown in settings.
If receiving calls on the home line is essential, check with the carrier about Wi-Fi Calling and the conditions required for calls on the other line before traveling. If you cannot rely on those conditions, plan for the possibility of voicemail and arrange another way to stay in contact.

Check the setup against your travel priorities

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The travel plan is not available in SIM settings
- Check that the exact phone model supports the plan’s SIM format and that the device is eligible with the carrier.
- Confirm that the plan has been installed or activated according to the provider’s instructions. Activation timing may be destination-specific.
- For two different carriers on iPhone, confirm the device is unlocked. On Pixel, check the device and carrier’s support for the intended dual-SIM configuration.
Data still uses the home line
- Reopen the data setting and confirm the intended line is selected: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data on iPhone or Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Mobile data on Pixel.
- On iPhone, check whether Allow Cellular Data Switching is enabled. If it is, either line may be used depending on coverage and availability.
- Check that the intended plan is active, has destination coverage, and has any required roaming setting enabled. Verify charges with the carrier before enabling roaming.
Calls or texts use the wrong number
- Review the default voice line on iPhone or the Calls and Texts defaults on Pixel; data selection does not automatically change those choices.
- For an existing iPhone SMS/MMS conversation, check its line. To continue on the other line, start a new conversation.
- On Pixel, choose Ask every time for calls if you want to choose at call time and the option is available.
A call to the home number goes to voicemail
First distinguish an unreachable line during another active call from a general coverage problem. Check whether the other SIM was already in use, then verify the phone’s model-specific dual-SIM call behavior and the carrier’s requirements for Wi-Fi Calling or data. A second SIM being enabled does not guarantee simultaneous call availability.
What to verify with the carrier or plan provider
The phone settings control which line is selected; they do not define the plan’s coverage or price. Before relying on a setup abroad, confirm these details for the specific destination and plan:
