For most newcomers who want modern survival horror, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Choose Resident Evil 7: Biohazard if you want first-person horror, Resident Evil (2002 remake) if you want the series’ original story in remake form, or Resident Evil 4 if you would rather begin with a more action-oriented game. You do not need to play the entire franchise in order before starting. The best choice is the one whose style and story route appeal to you—not a test of how much series history you have studied.

Choose by the experience you want

Resident Evil has changed its style over time, so the best first game depends more on the kind of horror or action you want than on completing a checklist. Capcom’s beginner-oriented guide, published October 18, 2024, is framed around helping players choose a first or next game. The options below separate official descriptions from judgment about which one may suit a newcomer.

If you are deciding between several games, begin with three questions: Do you want a modern third-person survival-horror introduction, a first-person horror perspective, or the earliest core story in its remake form? Or would you rather prioritize a more action-oriented game? Your answer points to a useful starting place without requiring you to rank every game in the franchise.

If you want… Start with… Why it fits
Modern third-person survival horror Resident Evil 2 (2019) PlayStation describes it as bringing the series’ roots forward with modern visuals and gameplay, making it a strong general introduction.
First-person horror and a new storyline Resident Evil 7: Biohazard PlayStation describes it as a new beginning for the series and highlights its first-person perspective.
The earliest core story, presented as a remake Resident Evil (2002 remake) Capcom’s history identifies the remake version and its 2002 release. It is the choice for someone who wants to begin with the original story in remake form. Its era and presentation differ from the more recent remakes.
A more action-oriented starting point Resident Evil 4 It is a reasonable standalone-feeling choice if action is your priority. That is an editorial recommendation, not an official claim that it is the best beginner game. PlayStation places its story after Resident Evil 2.
To continue Ethan Winters’ story Resident Evil Village, after Resident Evil 7 Official introductory descriptions connect these games as part of the continuing Ethan Winters story.

Use this as a preference guide, not a quality ranking. The sources describe different kinds of entry points; they do not establish one universally correct choice for every player. If you are undecided between the first two options, ask whether third-person survival horror or first-person horror sounds more appealing. If your main motivation is the series’ opening story, choose the 2002 remake. If action is the priority, Resident Evil 4 is a defensible later starting point, with the caveat that its suitability is a recommendation based on fit rather than an official beginner designation.

Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation 5
  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Why Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the default pick

If you are unsure, Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the clearest starting recommendation for someone who wants a modern version of the series’ survival-horror roots. PlayStation’s description emphasizes that balance of familiar series identity with updated presentation: it preserves the series’ roots while using modern visuals and gameplay. That makes it a practical middle route for a newcomer who wants an entry that feels contemporary without choosing the first-person alternative or beginning with the historical opening.

“Default” does not mean mandatory, and it does not mean that every other game requires you to finish it first. It simply means that, among these options, Resident Evil 2 is the strongest general recommendation for the specific preference of modern third-person survival horror. If that is what you want, there is no need to overthink the decision or map the entire franchise before starting.

It is also a useful choice if you may want to follow Leon’s later story in Resident Evil 4. PlayStation’s introduction places Resident Evil 4 after the events of Resident Evil 2. That broad connection provides a reason to consider the two-game route, but it should not be mistaken for a complete franchise chronology or proof that every detail between the releases is covered here.

This recommendation is about fit, not a claim that every player will prefer it. Someone specifically looking for first-person immersion may have a better time beginning with Resident Evil 7; someone who values the historical opening may prefer the 2002 remake. A newcomer who is drawn to action can consider Resident Evil 4 rather than forcing themselves through a different style first.

When another game is a better first choice

Pick Resident Evil 7 for first-person horror

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the more direct option if you want the camera to place you in a first-person perspective and are interested in a new storyline. PlayStation describes it as a new beginning for the series and highlights that first-person perspective. In other words, this is a choice for someone who is specifically attracted to that way of experiencing the game, rather than someone choosing it only because they think a newcomer must start at the earliest point in the franchise’s chronology.

Resident Evil 7 also begins the Ethan Winters story that continues in Resident Evil Village. If you choose this route, play Resident Evil 7 before Village. The sequence is useful because the official introductory descriptions connect the two games as a continuing story. You do not have to commit to playing both before you begin; you can start with Resident Evil 7 and decide afterward whether you want to continue with Village.

This is the most straightforward two-game route in the guide: it is organized around a connected character story, not a claim about the only acceptable order for the entire franchise. If first-person horror is your deciding preference, it is reasonable to choose this route even if you have not played older games. If you are more interested in a modern third-person introduction, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remains the better fit for that preference.

Pick Resident Evil (2002 remake) for the opening story

The first Resident Evil was released in 1996, and Capcom’s franchise history identifies the remake version as a 2002 release. The remake is the choice for someone who wants to begin with that original story rather than start with a later reimagining. Keep the distinction in mind: this is not the same release as the original 1996 game, and its presentation reflects its own era.

This is a useful route if historical starting point matters more to you than modern presentation. The 2002 remake and Resident Evil 2 (2019) answer different questions: the former lets you begin with the series’ opening story in remake form, while the latter is the default recommendation for modern third-person survival horror. Neither preference is wrong. Choose based on whether you would rather start with the early story or with a contemporary entry point.

Do not confuse the release dates when looking for a copy. Capcom’s history distinguishes the original 1996 release from the 2002 remake. A listing for one should not automatically be treated as a listing for the other. Verify the exact title and edition, and make sure the one you select is compatible with the hardware you plan to use.

Pick Resident Evil 4 if action matters most

Resident Evil 4 is set after the events of Resident Evil 2, according to PlayStation’s introduction. It can work for a newcomer who prioritizes a more action-oriented experience and does not mind starting later in the story. That makes it a viable choice for someone whose primary question is “Which style sounds right to me?” rather than “What is the earliest point in the timeline?”

Be precise about what this recommendation means. PlayStation’s official introduction supports the broad relationship to Resident Evil 2 and describes the game’s premise; it does not label Resident Evil 4 the official best game for beginners. Calling it a suitable action-first option is an editorial judgment. It is not a guarantee that every newcomer will find it the easiest game, nor a statement that it makes earlier stories irrelevant.

The sources establish a broad story relationship, not a complete list of every intervening event or a comprehensive release-order guide. If continuity is important to you, you may prefer to play Resident Evil 2 first and then move to Resident Evil 4. If you simply want a later, more action-oriented starting point, you can choose Resident Evil 4 directly without treating the rest of the franchise as required homework.

Two simple play routes

You can choose a short route based on the character or style that interests you without trying to map every mainline game and spin-off. These routes keep the decision manageable: one connects Leon-related starting points, and one follows Ethan Winters. They are recommendations for particular interests rather than a definitive canon chronology.

Resident Evil 2 Remake - PS5 - UK PAL
  • UK PSN account may be required for any online features
  • Modern entry route: Resident Evil 2 (2019) → Resident Evil 4 (2023), if you want to follow Leon into a later, more action-oriented story. PlayStation places the story of Resident Evil 4 after the events of Resident Evil 2. This route is a practical pairing, not a claim that it covers every relevant game or detail in between.
  • Ethan Winters route: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard → Resident Evil Village, to follow the connected Ethan story in order. The official introductory descriptions connect these games, which is why Resident Evil 7 should come first if you choose this route.
  • Historical opening: Begin with Resident Evil (2002 remake) if experiencing the series’ original story is your main goal. This is a starting point based on story history, not a requirement for playing the other recommendations.

These are entry routes, not a required franchise chronology. You can start with a game that suits you and decide later whether you want to explore more of the series. Capcom’s guide is designed to help players choose a first or next game; that approach is more useful for this decision than turning the complete franchise into a prerequisite list. The sources used here do not justify presenting every mainline game and spin-off as essential reading before you can enjoy one of these choices.

When choosing between the two connected routes, prioritize the experience you want now. The Leon-oriented pairing begins with the modern third-person entry and moves to a later game with a more action-oriented direction. The Ethan route begins with a first-person horror game and continues in Village. If neither character route is the reason you are interested, you can instead choose the remake for the original story or use Resident Evil 2 as the general starting recommendation.

What to check before buying

Game titles and editions can vary by hardware platform and region. Capcom’s official lineup confirms the existence of named games and editions, but it does not establish current retailer stock or physical availability for a particular region. Before purchasing, confirm that the exact edition is compatible with your platform and check the local store listing for current availability. No price or live stock status is established here, so do not assume a particular edition is in stock or that one price applies everywhere.

The strongest direct product fit for a newcomer who wants the default recommendation is an edition of the Resident Evil 2 remake that works on their platform. Other relevant choices are an edition of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the Resident Evil (2002 remake), or Resident Evil Village for someone continuing the Ethan story. These are game choices, not generic accessories. A buying link should only be added after checking its platform and regional availability; a product name alone does not establish that a specific physical copy is currently sold in a reader’s area.

  • Match the platform: Check that the edition is for the console or PC you intend to use. Do not assume that a title name alone confirms compatibility.
  • Check the exact release: The 2002 Resident Evil remake, the 2019 Resident Evil 2, and the 2023 Resident Evil 4 are distinct releases. Make sure a store listing matches the game and version you mean.
  • Check regional availability: Confirm that the listing is available in your region and is for the format you want. Capcom’s lineup confirms that games and editions exist, not that every region has a particular physical SKU in stock.
  • Plan a connected route only if you want one: If you intend to follow Ethan Winters’ story, check that you can access both Resident Evil 7 and Village on your chosen platform. You can still begin with the first game and decide about the follow-up later.
  • Do not assume a current price: Prices and stock are retailer-specific and can change. Verify the current local listing rather than relying on a general recommendation as a price or availability claim.

There is no need to buy several games before you know which style you enjoy. If you are uncertain, choose one entry point that matches your preference, then decide whether to continue. For example, choosing Resident Evil 7 does not obligate you to buy Village immediately, and choosing Resident Evil 2 does not obligate you to complete a full franchise route. This keeps the purchase decision proportional to what you actually intend to play.

How big is the series?

Capcom’s 2025 integrated report puts total sales for the Resident Evil series at over 170 million units. That figure describes the franchise as a whole; it does not indicate which individual game is the right choice for a new player, or which title is best suited to a particular preference. It is scale context, not a recommendation or a promise about any particular game’s availability.

The franchise’s long history can make the first choice feel more complicated than it is. The first game arrived in 1996, while the remake version is dated 2002. Later games offer different entry styles, including the modern third-person recommendation of Resident Evil 2 (2019), the first-person approach of Resident Evil 7, and the action-oriented option of Resident Evil 4. A long-running series does not mean that you must start at its first release or complete everything that came before.

Make the choice

Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019) if you want a contemporary third-person survival-horror entry and have no strong preference yet. Choose Resident Evil 7 for first-person horror and the beginning of Ethan Winters’ connected story; play Village afterward if you want to continue it. Choose the 2002 remake if the original story is your main draw, or Resident Evil 4 if action is your priority and you accept starting later in the story. Earlier games are context, not homework.

Once you have chosen, keep the next step simple: confirm the exact edition and platform, check local availability, and start with the game whose style appeals to you. You can always expand into another route later. There is no need to settle a full series order before playing your first Resident Evil.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I play Resident Evil 7 before Village?

Can I start with Resident Evil 4?

Is the 2002 Resident Evil the same as the 1996 original?

No. Capcom’s franchise history identifies the original game’s release as 1996 and the remake version’s release as 2002. Check the exact title and edition when shopping.

How much does the right starting game cost, and is it available on my platform?

Price, stock, regional physical availability, and platform compatibility depend on the specific edition and current local listing. Confirm those details with the retailer before buying; the general recommendations do not establish a live price or available SKU.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: If you want modern third-person survival horror, begin with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Choose Resident Evil 7 for first-person horror and continue with Village if you want Ethan’s story; pick the 2002 remake for the opening story or Resident Evil 4 for an action-first route.
