In Steam Frame’s VR Settings, choose your Dominant Eye to set which eye is used for spectator view and screenshots. If you instead want eye tracking limited to one eye, enable Track Dominant Eye Only under VR Settings > General; that separate accessibility option requires Show advanced settings. Valve’s published notes do not provide a dominance test or tell you whether to select left or right.
Choose the setting that matches what you want to control
Steam Frame has two similarly named controls, but Valve describes different purposes for them. The Dominant Eye selection determines which eye is used for spectator view, screenshots, and similar outputs. Track Dominant Eye Only limits eye tracking to one eye as an accessibility option.
| Control | What Valve says it does | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Dominant Eye | Sets which eye is used for spectator view, screenshots, and similar outputs. | VR Settings |
| Track Dominant Eye Only | Limits eye tracking to one eye; Valve describes it as an accessibility option. | VR Settings > General; enable Show advanced settings first. |
Valve documents these settings in its Steam Frame update announcement. It does not say that the Dominant Eye choice is a test, that the headset detects your dominant eye automatically, or that the two settings change tracking accuracy in a particular way.

Set the Dominant Eye for spectator view and screenshots
- Open VR Settings. Find the Dominant Eye setting.
- Choose the eye you want used for spectator view and screenshots. Valve’s description identifies these as the setting’s purpose.
- Use the output you care about as your guide. The published instructions do not prescribe left or right, or provide a test for deciding which eye is dominant. If you do not already have a preference, the official notes leave that choice to you; they do not describe a required calibration process.
This selection is about which eye supplies those outputs, as Valve describes them. Do not assume from the setting name alone that it controls every function that uses gaze data.

Limit eye tracking to one eye only if you need that accessibility option
- Enable Show advanced settings. Valve says this is required to access the option.
- Go to VR Settings > General.
- Enable Track Dominant Eye Only if you want eye tracking restricted to one eye.
This is separate from choosing an eye for spectator view and screenshots. Valve identifies the one-eye tracking toggle as an accessibility option, but does not claim it improves tracking accuracy, comfort, or streaming performance. The announcement also does not give a separate left-versus-right recommendation for this toggle.
What the choice does—and does not establish about foveated streaming
Valve’s Steam Frame product page describes two interior cameras for eye tracking and says low-latency eye-tracking data steers foveated streaming toward the area the user is looking at. It does not explain whether, or how, the Dominant Eye selector or Track Dominant Eye Only option affects that streaming behavior.

The product page also claims “over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth” for foveated streaming. That is Valve’s product-page claim, not an independent test result, and it is not evidence that choosing a particular eye causes the improvement.
