You can reclaim Android storage without adding a cleaner app: first check Settings > Storage to find what is taking space, then review files and cleanup suggestions in Files by Google. Delete downloads from the app that saved them, and choose carefully between clearing an app’s cache, archiving it, or uninstalling it. These actions remove different things, and some deletions cannot be undone.
Find what is taking up storage on Android
Open Settings > Storage and review the categories before deleting anything. The exact labels and path vary by phone maker and Android version; Google notes that some of its storage instructions require Android 14 or later. See Google’s Android storage guidance for the documented routes.
Storage holds files and app data, such as photos, downloads, and saved game content. Memory is where Android and running apps operate. Closing apps usually does not remove stored files or app data. Google’s general advice is: “You don’t usually need to close apps.”

Review cleanup suggestions in Files by Google
Files by Google can help you browse, search, rename, move, or copy files, and can surface cleanup suggestions such as junk files, duplicate or recommended files, screenshots, and unused apps. Google says the app works on Android 8.0 and later.

Inspect suggested files before removing them
Open Files by Google and go to Clean to review available suggestions. For unused apps, select the suggested apps you actually want to uninstall and confirm; the suggestion does not decide what you should keep. Menu names and the suggestions shown can vary.
Review junk-file cleanup
Google says clearing temporary app files does not affect app settings, but files deleted through Files by Google are permanently deleted. Open each cleanup card, check the selected items, and confirm only if you are comfortable removing them. Details are in Google’s instructions for clearing junk files.

Choose cache clearing, archiving, or uninstalling
These actions are not interchangeable. If an app provides its own storage controls, check them first. Otherwise, Android’s app settings can provide cache and storage options; the route varies by device. Google explains the distinction in its storage help.

Clear cache selectively
Cache is temporary data, so clearing it is generally less disruptive than clearing app storage. It may be recreated, and the app can be slower the next time it opens. Avoid clearing storage or data indiscriminately for messaging, authenticator, game, or other apps if their local state matters to you.

Archive apps you may want again
Archiving removes an app’s software while retaining its data and icon, so you can restore it if it remains downloadable. Automatic archiving through Google Play and manual archiving are separate options. Google’s manual archive instructions apply to Android 15 and later and may require supported device hardware; check Google’s app-archiving guidance for availability.
Uninstall apps you no longer use
If you do not expect to use an app again, uninstalling it removes the app software. Review any files or account information stored locally before you proceed, because uninstalling is not the same as preserving data through archiving.

Remove large downloads and media at the source
Look for large offline videos, music, maps, podcasts, or other downloaded content in the app that saved it. Google recommends removing downloaded content through the downloading app, which may offer a way to delete one item without removing other data. You can also use Files by Google to move or copy files, including to an SD card when your phone supports one. Its storage-space help describes file management options.
Move files off the phone if you want to keep them
Where supported, copy files to a computer or move them to an SD card rather than deleting them. Check that the copy is accessible before removing the phone’s original. The available connections and storage options depend on your phone and the destination device.

Check photo backup before freeing local space
If you plan to remove photos from the phone while keeping them in Google Photos, verify that backup has completed first. After local copies are removed, access to backed-up photos may require an internet connection. Do not treat a photo as safely backed up until the app confirms its backup status.
What to expect after cleanup
The amount of space recovered depends on the files and apps you choose; there is no universal storage gain. Freeing space can help a phone run better in general, but Google does not give a device-specific performance guarantee. Check Settings > Storage again after cleanup to see which categories changed.
