The right walking shoe is the one that matches your foot’s length, width, toe-box shape, depth and heel hold, then suits the distances and surfaces you actually walk. Fit matters more than the number printed on the tongue: try both shoes with your usual socks, preferably later in the day, and reject any pair that pinches, slips or needs a painful break-in period.

Start with the five fit checks that matter most

Walking shoes differ in their internal shape even when the size label is identical. Compare the shoe to your feet rather than assuming your usual size will transfer between brands or models. Check these five dimensions in order:

  • Length: your longest toe needs comfortable clearance from the front, without your foot sliding forward.
  • Width: the ball of your foot should not bulge over the sole or feel compressed at the sides.
  • Toe-box shape: a round, square or foot-shaped front can let the toes spread; a pointed front can squeeze them even when the length is correct.
  • Depth: the upper must leave vertical room for the tops of your toes and for any prescribed insole.
  • Heel and midfoot hold: the shoe should stay on without your toes clawing or gripping. Laces or adjustable straps make this easier.

Always fit the larger foot. It is normal for one foot to be slightly longer or wider; a shoe that fits only the smaller side can create pressure on the larger one.

How much room should be in front of your toes?

Measure from the longest toe, which is not always the big toe. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) gives an approximate target of 1/2 inch between that toe and the shoe tip in its shoe-fitting guidance. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust describes about 1 cm as ideal in its guidance on shoes to reduce foot pain, reviewed April 2025.

Those figures are rules of thumb, not a promise that every foot will fit the same way. The shoe should leave enough space for the toes to move while preventing the foot from sliding into the front. If you need to buy a much longer shoe to gain width, stop and try a wider fitting or a different toe-box outline instead; excess length can let the heel move and make you grip with your toes.

Fit walking shoes in a repeatable sequence

Use this process in a shop, or reproduce it at home if you order online and can return unworn shoes.

  1. Choose the right time. If your feet swell, shop in the afternoon or early evening. The Royal College of Podiatry says feet can expand by as much as half a size during the day in its walking-footwear advice; AAOS reports swelling of up to 8% over the day. Treat both as approximate guidance, not a required size increase.
  2. Wear your walking socks. Bring the socks you expect to use, including their thickness and any moisture-wicking pair. A sock changes the space available across the width and over the toes, so testing in bare feet can be misleading.
  3. Try both shoes. Put on and lace both shoes, stand up, and walk rather than judging while seated. Your feet can differ in length, width or volume.
  4. Test several constructions. The Royal College of Podiatry suggests trying four or five pairs and walking in each for a minute or two. Compare different brands, widths, toe shapes and fastening systems, not just different colours.
  5. Check the front clearance. Press gently over the end of the shoe or have someone check the gap while you stand. Confirm that your longest toe is not touching and that your foot does not slide forward on a downhill step.
  6. Check the widest part. Walk and bend your toes. There should be room across the ball of the foot without side pressure, wrinkling that rubs, or the little toe being pushed inward.
  7. Check vertical depth. Look for contact on the tops of the toes. Extra depth is often more useful than extra width for clawed, hammer or otherwise prominent toes, and it leaves room for an orthosis.
  8. Secure the heel and midfoot. Lace or fasten the shoe so the heel stays seated when you walk. It should feel held, not pinched. If you must curl your toes to stop the shoe coming off, the shape or fastening is wrong.
  9. Assess movement and pressure. Walk, turn, climb a step and stop. Reject any immediate rubbing, hot spot, numbness, pinching or slipping. Do not assume a painful area will disappear after a break-in period.
  10. Protect your return option. If buying online, walk only indoors on a clean floor until you are certain. Check the retailer’s return conditions before wearing the shoes outside.

Match the shoe to your daily route

There is no universal “walking shoe.” The right upper, sole and stiffness depend on where you walk, how far you go and what weather you encounter.

Routine or surface Features to prioritise Why
City pavements, indoor corridors and maintained paths Stable trainer-style base, comfortable cushioning, secure heel and a sole suited to smooth ground These surfaces are relatively predictable, so a flexible everyday athletic shoe can be practical.
Grass, uneven paths and moderate hills More structured construction, a stiffer sole and secure fastening Extra structure can help the shoe stay stable as the ground changes.
Rough or frequently muddy trails Walking footwear with more protection and traction; consider waterproof and breathable construction according to conditions Exposure to wet ground and irregular surfaces changes the protection and weather requirements.
Mixed routes A compromise that remains comfortable on pavement while offering enough structure for your least predictable surface A shoe optimised only for smooth floors may feel insecure on trails, while a very stiff boot can be unnecessary for daily streets.

The Royal College of Podiatry distinguishes ordinary walking footwear from shoes intended for uneven trails, grass and hills. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust likewise notes that athletic shoes come in many activity-specific designs. Choose for the route you actually repeat, not for a label such as “walking” alone.

Choose by foot shape, not by a generic arch label

Wide forefoot or toes crowded at the sides

Try a wider width and a broader, round or square toe box. Inspect the outline of the sole as well as the upper: an upper may look wide while the underlying platform still tapers sharply. Do not solve side pressure by moving several sizes longer, because the resulting heel slip can create a new problem.

Toes pressing against the upper

This is a depth issue as well as a width issue. Look for a taller toe box or extra-depth model. A shoe can be wide enough across the ball yet still press on the tops of the toes. Remove or replace an insole only if doing so preserves the intended support and does not make the foot unstable.

Different foot lengths or volumes

Fit both feet and choose the pair that accommodates the larger one. Lacing can fine-tune the midfoot on the smaller side, but it cannot safely compensate for a toe that is hitting the front or a forefoot that is squeezed.

Flat feet or pronation concerns

Some athletic shoes provide pronation control, but shoe selection is not a simple prescription based on an arch category. Guy’s and St Thomas’ guidance on choosing athletic footwear says the decision can be complicated and that many people do well with a suitable general shoe, tailored with orthoses when needed. Choose the shoe that is comfortable and secure for your activity; seek an assessment rather than assuming a stability label will correct your gait or pain.

Evaluate the sole, flex and fastening

Part of the shoe What to test Good sign
Arch and midsole Try to bend the shoe in your hands and while walking It resists collapsing through the arch instead of folding in the middle.
Forefoot flex Roll through a normal step It flexes near the ball of the foot, where the foot naturally bends.
Cushioning Walk on the surfaces you use and notice comfort and stability The amount feels comfortable and does not make you wobble; more cushioning is not automatically better.
Heel counter and collar Walk, stop and change direction The heel remains seated without rubbing or lifting excessively.
Laces or straps Fasten from the toes toward the ankle and walk The midfoot is held securely without pressure, and the toes can stay relaxed.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ athletic-footwear guidance reports that the foot stretches about 5 mm between standing and walking. That is one reason to assess shoes while moving rather than selecting a tight standing fit. The same guidance supports a shoe that resists bending at the arch and flexes at the ball of the foot.

What to do when a shoe feels almost right

Heel slips but the toes feel correct

Re-lace or use the shoe’s top eyelets to secure the heel, then walk again. If the heel still lifts or your toes start gripping, the heel shape is probably incompatible; try another last rather than accepting a longer or tighter shoe.

Toes feel cramped but the length seems correct

Compare a wider or differently shaped toe box. If the tops of the toes rub, prioritise depth. A larger length is not a reliable substitute for either change.

The shoe rubs at one spot immediately

Remove the shoe and inspect the contact point. Try a different upper seam, construction or volume. Blisters, hot spots and pressure are fit warnings, not proof that the shoe must be broken in.

The shoe feels secure only when laced very tightly

Loosen the laces and check whether the shoe still holds the heel and midfoot. If it does not, the shoe may be too voluminous or the shape may not match your foot. Tightening until the foot is numb is not a safe fix.

You need an insole or orthosis

Bring the prescribed device when trying shoes. Confirm that the removable insole can be replaced without reducing toe depth or raising the foot into the upper. The shoe still needs enough width and heel hold after the orthosis is installed.

When a medical condition changes the fitting rules

Arthritis, deformity, diabetes, reduced sensation, circulation problems and prescribed orthoses can alter what “comfortable” means. Extra width, extra depth, protective materials or a different fastening system may be necessary. The Australian Podiatry Association’s footwear advice and the NHS foot-pain guidance both emphasise individual fitting and protection.

Arrange advice from a podiatrist or other foot-care professional when ordinary shoes cannot accommodate your shape, or when you have persistent pain, rubbing, pressure marks, skin damage, numbness or circulation concerns. Reduced sensation can hide an injury, so do not rely solely on how a shoe feels during a short try-on; inspect your feet after walking and follow your clinician’s advice.

Buying online without losing the fit test

  • Measure both feet while standing, but use the measurement only as a starting point because lasts and size scales differ.
  • Read the specific model’s width, depth and insole information; “wide” is not a universal measurement.
  • Order the size and width that match the larger foot and keep your normal walking socks ready.
  • Try both shoes indoors late in the day. Walk, turn and use stairs if possible.
  • Keep all packaging and do not wear the shoes outdoors until you have confirmed the fit and return deadline.

A retailer’s size chart cannot reveal heel hold, pressure points or whether the toe box suits your particular outline. Those require the same movement test you would perform in a shop.

A quick decision checklist before you pay

  • Does the longest toe have comfortable clearance without forward sliding?
  • Is the ball of the foot free from side pressure, with the little toe not squeezed?
  • Is there enough vertical depth for your toes and any insole?
  • Can laces or straps secure the midfoot and heel while your toes remain relaxed?
  • Does the shoe resist bending at the arch and flex near the ball of the foot?
  • Is the sole and protection appropriate for your usual pavement, path, grass, hill or trail?
  • Can you walk for several minutes without pinching, rubbing, slipping, numbness or a hot spot?
  • Have you tried both shoes with the socks you will actually wear?

Bottom line: fit the foot, then fit the route

Start with shape—length, width, toe-box outline, depth and heel hold—because a comfortable shoe cannot compensate for crowding or slipping. Then select the least-specialised sole that safely suits your routine: a stable trainer for predictable city walking, or more structured, protective footwear as surfaces become uneven, wet or steep. A shoe that feels good immediately, holds the foot without force and remains comfortable while walking is a better choice than a size label, arch category or cushioning claim.
