Choose upholstery by matching its construction and care requirements to the damage your household is most likely to cause. Cats can snag loops and raised textures, dogs and children bring spills and mud, and daily sitting creates friction. Look beyond fiber names and marketing labels: check the weave or pile, cleaning code, documented test method and results, and the fabric’s other physical properties. No upholstery is completely pet-proof.
Start with the kind of wear your home actually creates
A durable choice is not the same for every pet household. Identify the dominant problem before comparing fabrics.
Claws and snagging
Cat claws can catch in looped yarns, bouclé, open weaves and raised textures. A smooth, tightly woven surface gives claws fewer points to enter. Long or loose pile can also pull, mat or show disturbed areas even when the fabric has a strong abrasion result. No weave guarantees that a determined cat will not cause damage; the construction only changes the likelihood and visibility of snags.

For wet messes, the cleaning code and the maker’s written instructions matter more than a “pet-friendly” badge. A fabric may resist a particular stain yet prohibit the cleaner you normally use, or it may be washable only when a removable cover is handled in a specified way. Check the exact upholstery or furniture model, not a generic description of the fiber.

Daily friction
Seats used every day experience repeated rubbing, compression and movement at edges and seams. Abrasion data can help you compare fabrics tested by the same method, but a rub count is not a forecast of years of service. Construction, cushion design, maintenance, sunlight, body oils, cleaning and misuse all affect appearance and durability.
Shedding and hair retention
Hair tends to lodge in loops, deep texture and some piles. Smooth, closely woven faces are generally easier to vacuum or wipe, while heavily textured surfaces can hide hair until it accumulates. Color and pattern are practical choices too: a contrast between hair and fabric makes shedding more noticeable, whereas a related tone can reduce its visual impact without changing cleanability.
How to read abrasion numbers without being misled
Ask for the test method, not just a large number. The Association for Contract Textiles (ACT) lists separate high-traffic guidance for woven indoor upholstery:
| Method | ACT high-traffic woven guideline | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Wyzenbeek, ASTM D4157 | 30,000 double rubs, using approved #10 cotton duck | A result from this method under the stated test setup |
| Martindale, ASTM D4966 | 40,000 cycles at 12 kPa | A result from a different method and pressure |
These figures are not interchangeable. ACT says Wyzenbeek and Martindale results do not correlate, and results can vary substantially for some woven structures. Do not treat 40,000 Martindale cycles as equivalent to 40,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs, and do not convert one into the other.

ACT also states that abrasion results exceeding its performance guidelines are not an indicator of product lifespan. Multiple factors affect durability and appearance retention. The guidelines are useful for screening and for asking a supplier for comparable data; they are not a universal residential threshold or a promise of a particular number of years.
What to request from a seller
- The exact method and standard number (for example, Wyzenbeek ASTM D4157 or Martindale ASTM D4966).
- The test result and any stated test conditions, such as the Martindale pressure.
- Whether the number applies to the exact colorway and construction you are buying.
- Any separate results for pilling, strength, seam slippage and colorfastness.
If a listing supplies only “high durability” or a rub count with no method, you cannot make a reliable comparison with a fabric tested under a named method.
Check properties that abrasion testing does not cover
ACT treats several physical properties as separate from abrasion. When a supplier publishes them, they provide useful additional evidence, but they do not guarantee performance in a pet home.
Recommended Free Tools
| Property | ACT woven indoor guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pilling | Class 3 minimum under either ASTM D3511 or ASTM D4970 | Indicates resistance to surface fuzz and pills; pilling is primarily an appearance issue. |
| Breaking strength | At least 50 pounds in both warp and weft | Shows resistance to tensile force in each fabric direction. |
| Seam slippage | At least 25 pounds in both warp and weft | Relates to yarn movement at a loaded seam. |
Laboratory tests cannot reproduce every household condition. ACT specifically notes that care and maintenance, misuse and the environment influence outcomes. A fabric can meet a laboratory criterion and still look poor if it is repeatedly scrubbed, exposed to strong sunlight, installed over an unsuitable cushion or damaged by claws.

Look at the whole construction, not just the fiber name
“Polyester,” “polypropylene,” cotton or a blend describes fiber content, but not the finished upholstery’s weave, backing, pile, finish or seam behavior. ASTM International notes that upholstery fabrics use many combinations of construction variables and that no single performance specification covers every fabric type.
Woven, tufted and flocked fabrics
ASTM D3597 covers plain, tufted or flocked woven upholstery fabrics for new indoor furniture. Its scope includes tests for strength, yarn slippage, abrasion, dimensional change, colorfastness, back-coating durability, flammability and applicable Federal Trade Commission requirements. The page identifies D3597-02R18E01 as a referenced edition and lists D3597-02R24 as active; verify the current edition when a contract or commercial specification depends on it.
Coated upholstery
Vinyl-coated and urethane-coated upholstery is a different category. ASTM D3597 does not cover coated fabrics; ASTM lists ASTM D3690 separately for indoor vinyl-coated and urethane-coated upholstery fabric, with D3690-25 identified as active. Ask which category and standard apply before comparing a coated surface with a woven one.

Revolution’s pet-oriented guide recommends tightly woven, low-pile surfaces and warns that loops or raised surfaces may catch claws. Its cat advice specifically favors smooth, tightly woven performance fabric over loose bouclé or long-pile velvet because there are fewer snag points. Those are the manufacturer’s product-guidance claims, not a universal certification for every fabric sold under those descriptions.

Understand cleaning codes and “performance” labels
Common cleaning-code conventions are a starting point, not permission to use any cleaner you have at home.
| Code | Typical convention | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water-based upholstery cleaner | Use only the products and process specified by the item’s instructions; avoid oversaturation. |
| S | Water-free solvent | Use an approved solvent method, with ventilation and testing as directed. |
| W/S | Water-based or water-free solvent | Either category may be allowed, but the instructions still control and saturation can be prohibited. |
| X | Vacuuming or brushing only | Liquid cleaners and many solvents are not approved. |
This summary follows the conventions described by Omba’s upholstery specification guide. The individual fabric or furniture care label takes precedence. Codes can be printed on a cushion label, product page or care document, and a removable cover can have different instructions from the frame upholstery.
Why “performance fabric” is not a standard
Omba notes that “performance fabric” has no single industry definition. A seller may use the phrase for stain resistance, cleanability, fade resistance, abrasion performance, or a combination. The performance may come from the fiber itself, a finish applied after weaving, or both. Ask what specific property is being claimed and what test or care instruction supports it.

- Read the exact care label and the furniture maker’s instructions.
- Remove loose soil with a vacuum attachment or soft brush that will not pull the yarns.
- Test the approved cleaner on an inconspicuous area and allow it to dry before judging color change or a ring.
- Use the smallest amount of product needed; do not saturate a cushion unless the instructions explicitly allow it.
- Blot rather than aggressively scrub, then follow the required drying procedure.
When a spill is outside the written instructions, contact the furniture or fabric manufacturer rather than improvising with bleach, disinfectant or a household degreaser.

Use manufacturer and retailer claims in the right context
A concrete reupholstery example
Revolution identifies its Sugarshack fabric as a 100% polypropylene solid, 54 inches wide, with a stated 30,000 double-rub rating and a pet- and kid-friendly tag. This is a useful example of the details to record when comparing fabric by the yard: fiber, width, test result and the manufacturer’s intended-use label. The claims apply to that product as described by Revolution; they do not establish that all polypropylene fabrics, all 30,000-double-rub fabrics or all “pet-friendly” products perform the same way.
Interpreting a retailer’s pet-friendly icon
Pottery Barn defines its pet-friendly icon as easy-clean fabrics designed with a tight weave intended to resist pet snags and trapped hair. Its guide also distinguishes performance fabrics by ease of care and identifies a contract-grade category with rub counts over 40,000. These are that retailer’s catalog labels and examples, not an independent certification that applies across the upholstery market. Confirm the exact code, construction and test method for the item you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step buying process
- Describe the household. Note the number and size of pets, whether cats climb or knead on furniture, how often people eat on the sofa, and whether the piece sits in direct sunlight.
- Rank the damage modes. Put snagging, abrasion, stains, hair retention and fading in order of importance. The highest-ranked problem should drive the first screen.
- Eliminate unsuitable textures. For claw-prone homes, inspect the face in person or request a close-up swatch. Reject loose loops, easily lifted yarns and pile that catches a fingernail if snagging is your main risk.
- Record the cleaning code. Write down W, S, W/S or X and obtain the full care sheet. If the seller cannot state the code for the exact construction, treat cleanability as unverified.
- Separate test methods. Put Wyzenbeek results in one column and Martindale results in another. Never combine them into a single ranking or conversion.
- Ask for supporting properties. Where available, compare pilling, breaking strength and seam-slippage data alongside abrasion. Note the standard and direction tested.
- Check construction and comfort. Compare hand feel, breathability, pile, backing, pattern, color and cushion compatibility. A hard-wearing fabric that is uncomfortable or visually unsuitable is still a poor choice.
- Order a swatch. Evaluate the actual color, texture, hair visibility and cleaning response under your lighting. A swatch cannot reproduce years of use, but it can reveal snag points and whether the surface feels practical.
- Confirm installation details. Ask the upholsterer whether pattern matching, seam placement, cushion reversibility and fabric direction will put high-stress areas on the strongest part of the cloth.
- Keep the documents. Save the care instructions, test data and purchase details so future cleaning or warranty questions refer to the same product.
How to compare common upholstery options
| Option or feature | Potential advantage in a pet home | Questions and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth, tightly woven face | Fewer obvious claw entry points; hair is often easier to remove than from deep texture. | Inspect the actual weave and seam construction; no surface is claw-proof. |
| Low-pile performance fabric | Can combine a relatively smooth surface with a manufacturer’s cleanability claim. | “Performance” is undefined by itself. Verify the code, finish and test results. |
| Loose bouclé or open loop | Distinctive texture and visual softness. | Loops and raised yarns can catch claws; assess snag risk before choosing. |
| Long-pile velvet | Soft hand and a rich appearance. | Pile can show direction changes, crushing and disturbed areas; ask about maintenance and pet interaction. |
| Polypropylene or olefin fabric | Some products are marketed with stain-resistant or easy-clean claims. | Fiber name alone does not establish weave, finish, abrasion method or safe cleaner. Verify the specific product. |
| Coated vinyl or urethane | Different surface category that may be wiped according to its instructions. | Use the relevant coated-fabric specification and care directions; do not compare directly with woven-fabric assumptions. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing the biggest rub count. A high number without a method is incomplete, and a result above an ACT guideline is not a lifespan promise.
- Converting Wyzenbeek to Martindale. ACT says the methods do not correlate. Compare only like with like.
- Assuming a pet icon is a certification. Retailer labels describe that retailer’s catalog criteria. They are not a market-wide standard.
- Buying by fiber alone. Two fabrics with the same fiber can differ in weave, pile, backing, finish and seam behavior.
- Ignoring pilling and seam slippage. Abrasion is only one property; a surface can resist rubbing yet pill or open at a seam.
- Using the wrong cleaner. A stain-resistant finish does not override a W, S, W/S or X instruction.
- Scrubbing aggressively. Excessive friction, heat or moisture can damage finishes and create a larger mark than the original spill.
- Treating laboratory data as a household guarantee. Environment, maintenance, misuse, sunlight and furniture construction change real outcomes.
Maintenance that extends appearance
Even a suitable fabric needs a routine. Vacuum loose hair and grit before it is ground into the face. Rotate or reverse cushions when the furniture design permits it, and address spills promptly using the approved process. Keep sharp toys, exposed fasteners and rough pet accessories from repeatedly rubbing the same area. Trim a snag rather than pulling it; pulling can enlarge the distortion. Follow the maker’s schedule for professional cleaning, and ask whether a removable cover may be washed before putting it in a machine.
For cats, provide a scratching surface near the furniture and keep claws maintained as appropriate for the animal. These measures reduce the load placed on upholstery, but they do not change the fabric’s test rating or create a guarantee against damage.
What evidence is enough for a confident choice?
For a high-use sofa, the strongest comparison combines four kinds of information:
- Construction: a close, stable weave or pile appropriate to your snag and hair concerns.
- Care: an explicit code and complete instructions for the exact item.
- Testing: a named abrasion method with conditions, plus other published properties when available.
- Fit: acceptable comfort, appearance, cushion compatibility and maintenance effort for your household.
If one of these is missing, record it as unknown rather than filling the gap with a marketing adjective. “Pet-friendly,” “contract grade” or “performance” can help you locate candidates, but the construction, instructions and documented method determine whether a candidate fits your use.
Bottom line for pet households
For most homes with cats, begin with a smooth, tightly woven, low-pile surface and verify that claws cannot easily lift the yarns. For homes dominated by spills, prioritize a clearly stated cleaning code and workable instructions. For heavy daily use, compare abrasion results only when the test method is the same, then check pilling, strength and seam slippage. Treat every manufacturer or retailer claim as specific to its product, and remember that no test number or label predicts an exact service life.
