For most players, the standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the sensible starting point. Choose an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 if you will use its adjustable thumbstick tension, trigger locks, paddles, or interchangeable parts; choose the Core version only after checking whether its smaller box and any separately purchased accessories make better sense for your budget.
Which Xbox controller should you buy?
Begin with the controls you actually want, then compare the current price and contents of the box in your region. Xbox’s US shop result listed the Xbox Wireless Controller at $64.99, the Elite Series 2 Core at $149.99, and the Elite Series 2 at $199.99. These are observed US listing prices, not guaranteed live prices or prices for other regions; Xbox says prices and availability may vary by retailer. Check Xbox’s US controller shop for the offer available when you buy.
- Choose the standard Xbox Wireless Controller for general play, standard controls, or a tighter budget.
- Choose the Elite Series 2 if you want its documented control adjustments and expect to use them.
- Consider the Elite Series 2 Core if you want the Elite controls but do not need the full bundle’s extra components. Compare the Core plus any separately purchased accessories against the full bundle’s price.
Those feature differences are concrete reasons to choose one model over another, but they do not establish that an Elite controller will improve every player’s results in every game.

What do the Elite Series 2 controls add?
Microsoft lists adjustable-tension thumbsticks, shorter hair trigger locks, a wrap-around rubberized grip, four paddles, interchangeable thumbsticks and D-pads, button mapping, and custom profiles for the Elite Series 2. These options let you change aspects of the controller’s setup; their value depends on whether those adjustments suit your preferences and games.

- Adjustable thumbstick tension: change stick resistance to a preferred feel.
- Trigger locks: shorten trigger travel when you prefer that setup.

- Interchangeable parts and profiles: configure components and save mappings for different setups.

Elite Series 2 vs. Core: what changes?
The important distinction is what comes in the box. The full Elite Series 2 bundle includes extra interchangeable components and a carrying case. The Core includes essential components, while the Complete Component Pack is sold separately. If you expect to buy additional parts, compare the combined cost with the full bundle rather than choosing based only on the Core name or its initial price.

Xbox’s UK comparison page showed an Elite Series 2 price of £149.99 ERP and Core starting at £114.99. Those are UK regional figures, not US prices, and should not be treated as guaranteed current offers. Check Xbox’s UK Elite comparison for the regional listing and bundle details.

Console, PC, and mobile compatibility
Microsoft says the Elite Series 2 connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. On Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft lists Bluetooth, a compatible USB cable, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter (sold separately) as connection options. Mobile support is limited to selected devices and versions, and some functions are not supported. Confirm the current compatibility details for your specific device and operating system rather than assuming every feature works across platforms.

The Xbox Accessories app is available on Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11. Microsoft lists Elite mapping and profile features for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11, subject to software and operating-system requirements.
Battery and accessories
Microsoft specifies up to 40 hours of rechargeable battery life per charge for the Elite Series 2, while noting that actual battery life varies with usage and other factors. Microsoft says its figure comes from testing preproduction units; it is a manufacturer estimate, not an independently measured runtime for every user.

Xbox also lists a rechargeable battery and USB-C accessory in its US shop. Check the exact contents and compatibility for the controller and setup you are considering instead of assuming an accessory is included or works with every device.

A practical buying checklist
- Set your budget using a local offer. Compare retailer prices available to you; Xbox notes that prices and availability vary.
- List the Elite features you will use. If adjustable sticks, trigger locks, paddles, or interchangeable components are not useful to you, the standard model may be the better fit.
- Compare Core and full-bundle contents. Account for any separately purchased component pack or other parts you need.
- Confirm your platform and connection. Check compatibility for your console, PC, or mobile device, including any required cable, adapter, software, or OS version.
- Check power and included accessories. Verify what is in the box and whether any battery or cable suits your setup.
