An STL file does not say whether its coordinates represent millimeters, inches, or another unit. A slicer may apply a default or let you choose, but that does not reveal what the model’s creator intended. Use UnitMesh’s five scale interpretations as candidate hypotheses, then compare them with a trusted design dimension or physical reference before slicing.
Why an STL can look tiny or enormous
STL geometry stores coordinate values, not an authoritative physical unit. A coordinate of 20 might be intended as 20 millimeters, 20 inches, or another measurement; the file itself cannot settle that question. The software importing it has to apply a convention or a unit choice.
That is why one model can appear at very different sizes in a slicer. Scale mismatches can produce differences such as 10×, 25.4×, or 1000×; these are examples of conversion magnitudes, not statistics about how often errors occur. No single unit assumption is correct for every STL.
What UnitMesh’s five scale assumptions show
UnitMesh compares the same raw coordinate bounds under five possible unit assumptions. For coordinates measuring 20 × 10 × 5, the resulting dimensions are:

These are conversions of identical coordinates, not five automatic guesses or confidence-ranked results. UnitMesh highlights the assumption you select; that highlight means selected, not detected. Compare the candidate dimensions against evidence about the intended part rather than treating the most familiar or plausible-looking row as proven.
How to decide which dimensions are intended
- Read the model bounds. Review the dimensions and compare the five interpretations that apply to your workflow. Treat each as a hypothesis.
- Find a trusted reference dimension. Use a dimension from the original design, a drawing, the creator, or a physical object. Compare it with the corresponding candidate measurement. If you have no reliable reference, ask the creator or source; the STL cannot supply the missing unit information.
- Check the receiving software’s unit behavior. Autodesk says most 3D-printing slicers import STL files in millimeters, but that is not a guarantee about every slicer or its current settings. SketchUp documents millimeters as its default STL import unit and allows users to choose centimeters, feet, or inches. Its export options include meters, centimeters, millimeters, feet, and inches.
- Set the scale deliberately. Match the export and import units where possible, or apply a deliberate conversion in the receiving application. Shapr3D recommends exporting in the slicer’s unit or keeping units consistent throughout the workflow.
- Check the final model before slicing. Confirm the dimensions after scaling and check that the part fits the printer’s build volume. Keep the selected assumption visible in your workflow; do not treat it as detected truth or keep rescaling solely because a preview looks plausible.
To compare candidates, consider their bounding-box dimensions, agreement with the known reference, plausibility for the intended object, fit within the printer’s build volume, and consistency with the export and import settings. These checks help identify the appropriate scale; they do not establish a universal probability ranking for the five units.

What UnitMesh checks—and what it cannot establish
UnitMesh is described as a local preflight tool for binary and ASCII STL files. Its checks cover structural and geometric issues, including:

- Zero-area facets.
- Normals that are not unit length or that oppose vertex winding.
- Nonzero binary attribute bytes.
- ASCII
solidandendsolidnames that do not match. - Ambiguity between binary and ASCII structure.
- Bounds offset from the origin.
If a vertex coordinate is non-finite, the tool withholds partial dimensions rather than presenting an incomplete bounding box as complete. Its published input limits are 64 MiB and 250,000 triangles. The --strict option is described as returning a nonzero status for analysis errors; it does not check whether the chosen scale is correct.

These checks are not automatic unit detection or a certification that a model is printable. They do not prove that the part will fit or print correctly. After locking the scale, you still need to assess features such as manifoldness, wall thickness, and clearance.

Software defaults and options can help keep a workflow consistent, but they do not add the creator’s intended unit to an STL that lacks it.
