There is no universal Ryobi staple size. Read the model number on your stapler, then match both the staple format (including gauge or crown width) and the leg length to that model’s Ryobi product specification or operator manual. For example, the P360 and P361 use 18-gauge narrow-crown staples from 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches, while the P317 uses 3/8-inch-crown staples from 1/4 to 9/16 inches and is explicitly compatible with Arrow T50 staples. Those formats are not interchangeable.
Start with the model number, not the word “Ryobi”
Staples sold for Ryobi tools are not one standardized size. Ryobi has cordless narrow-crown staplers, crown staplers using a different staple family, and regional models whose specifications are stated in metric measurements. The model number is therefore the first and most important piece of information.
Look for the model label on the tool body, battery-side label, packaging, or manual. Record the complete code, including any regional prefix or suffix. A similar-looking tool can accept a different crown width or a different length range, and a staple package that merely says “for Ryobi” does not establish compatibility.

The table shows why all four identifying details matter: model, staple format or gauge, crown width, and leg length. A match on only one of those dimensions is not enough.

What the staple terms mean for compatibility
Gauge or staple family
The P360 and P361 are specified for 18-gauge narrow-crown staples. The P317 is specified for a different crown-staple format and names the T50 family. “18-gauge” and “T50” are not interchangeable descriptions; they identify different staple systems. Use the designation printed in your model’s documentation rather than trying to convert one format into another.
Crown width
The crown is the crosspiece that joins the two staple legs. P361 documentation specifies a 1/4-inch crown, whereas P317 documentation specifies a 3/8-inch crown. That difference is enough to make an otherwise similar-looking staple unsuitable. The New Zealand guidance for R18ST50-0 describes an approximately 10 mm (3/8-inch) crown.
Leg length
Leg length is the supported range printed for the tool. P360 and P361 accept 3/8- to 1-1/2-inch legs. P317 accepts substantially shorter 1/4- to 9/16-inch legs. The regional R18ST50-0 guidance recommends 10 mm staples. Do not assume that a staple is suitable because its crown matches if its leg length falls outside the model’s range.

A reliable selection process
- Read the exact model number. Do not rely on the color, battery platform, or a retailer’s category label. Write down every character, such as P361 or R18ST50-0.
- Open the model-specific Ryobi product page or operator manual. Confirm the staple family, gauge if given, crown width, and minimum and maximum leg lengths. If the model is not covered here, use its own manual instead of borrowing specifications from a similar tool.
- Compare the staple package with all of those dimensions. Check the package for format or family, crown measurement, and leg-length range. The phrase “Ryobi staple” by itself is not a dimensional specification.
- Keep regional measurements in their original context. A 10 mm recommendation for the New Zealand R18ST50-0 is regional guidance for that model. It does not automatically establish the correct size for a US P317, P360, or P361.
- Load the tool according to its manual. If the strip does not seat cleanly or the tool does not operate normally, stop and recheck the format and dimensions rather than forcing it.
Model-specific guidance
P360: 18-gauge narrow crown, 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches
Ryobi identifies the P360 as an 18V ONE+ AirStrike 18GA narrow-crown stapler. Its specified leg-length range is 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches. Because Ryobi’s product page marks this model discontinued, owners should use the specification to identify replacement consumables, not assume that a currently marketed Ryobi stapler uses the same staples.
For a P360, reject packages that identify only a 3/8-inch crown/T50 format or that list a maximum length below 3/8 inch. Confirm the narrow-crown designation and the complete supported range before buying.
P361: 18-gauge, 1/4-inch crown, 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches
The P361 uses 18-gauge narrow-crown staples. Its operator manual specifies a 1/4-inch crown and a 3/8- to 1-1/2-inch leg-length range. Both the crown and the length range should appear compatible on the package; a staple with the correct length but a 3/8-inch crown is not the documented P361 format.

P317: 3/8-inch crown, 1/4 to 9/16 inches, T50-compatible
The P317 is the clearest example of why model matching matters. Ryobi specifies 3/8-inch-crown staples from 1/4 to 9/16 inches and explicitly names Arrow T50 staples as compatible. Do not load P360/P361 18-gauge narrow-crown strips into a P317 simply because both tools are staplers. Their crown formats and length ranges differ.
Regional models: R18ST50-0, R18GS18-0 and RST4-0
Ryobi New Zealand’s support guidance for the R18ST50-0 recommends 10 mm T50 staples with an approximately 10 mm (3/8-inch) crown. Ryobi UK lists R18ST50-0, R18GS18-0 and RST4-0 in its compatibility guidance but tells owners to consult the applicable manual. These regional names should not be treated as US equivalents without checking the exact model and market.
How to choose a leg length without overclaiming
The manufacturer information establishes what each tool can accept, not a universal rule that one supported length is best for every fabric, wood thickness, upholstery job, or craft project. Within the documented range, the appropriate choice depends on the material stack and the result you need, but the cited specifications do not provide a material-by-material length chart.

- First eliminate every length outside the model’s stated minimum and maximum.
- Then compare the remaining package dimensions with the actual thickness of the material assembly and the fastening result required by your project.
- If your project needs a length outside the documented range, do not modify the staple, tool, or magazine to make it fit. Choose a fastening method and tool specifically rated for that requirement.
This approach prevents two common errors: buying a long staple because it sounds stronger, or buying a short staple because it is easier to find, without checking whether the tool supports it.
Package-check checklist
- Exact model: Does the package or manual explicitly cover your P360, P361, P317, or regional model?
- Format: Is it 18-gauge narrow-crown, 3/8-inch crown, T50, or another designation?
- Crown: Does the width match the model specification—1/4 inch for the P361, 3/8 inch for the P317, or approximately 10 mm for the New Zealand R18ST50-0 guidance?
- Leg length: Does the stated range include the size you intend to use?
- Regional wording: Are the measurements and model code from the same market as your tool?
- Manual confirmation: If any dimension is missing or contradictory, have you checked the applicable operator manual before opening the package?
What to do when staples do not fit
The strip will not seat in the magazine
Stop and compare the crown width and staple family with the model documentation. A P317 strip and a P361 strip can look broadly similar while using different crown dimensions. Do not force a strip into the magazine.
The package lists the right length but a different format
Length alone does not make a staple compatible. For example, a 3/8-inch-leg staple in a 3/8-inch-crown/T50 format is not the documented narrow-crown choice for a P360 or P361. Return to the model’s full specification and match every listed dimension.

The model number is missing or unreadable
Do not guess from the tool’s appearance or battery platform. Check the original packaging, purchase records, and operator-manual identification pages. If the model still cannot be established, use Ryobi’s model-specific support or manual lookup rather than loading an unverified staple.
The tool is a regional model
Use support information for the country or region in which that exact tool was sold. The New Zealand R18ST50-0 recommendation and the United Kingdom compatibility list demonstrate that similarly named products can be documented differently. Confirm the local manual before converting metric measurements or substituting a US specification.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Ryobi stapler takes the same strip: P360/P361 narrow-crown staples and P317 3/8-inch-crown staples are separate formats.
- Shopping by length only: Crown width and staple family are equally necessary.
- Transferring specifications between regions: A regional R18ST50-0 recommendation is not a universal Ryobi rule.
- Treating “compatible with Ryobi” as proof: Require the package dimensions and a model match.

Bottom line for buying staples
Write down the model, then verify format, crown and leg length together. Use 18-gauge narrow-crown staples in the documented 3/8- to 1-1/2-inch range for P360 and P361; use 3/8-inch-crown, 1/4- to 9/16-inch staples for P317, including the explicitly named Arrow T50 family; and follow the local manual for regional models such as R18ST50-0. When any one of those details is unknown, do not guess.
