The reliable way to choose a Spanx size is to measure your body, use the chart for the exact garment, and order the size your measurements indicate—not a smaller size chosen solely for extra compression. Spanx describes the correct feel as “like a second skin—snug but not restrictive.” If a garment pinches, rolls, restricts breathing or movement, or leaves painful marks, the size or style is probably wrong. For more sculpting, choose a stronger compression level rather than sizing down.
Start with the exact garment, not a generic Spanx label
Spanx makes bodysuits, shorts, briefs, slips, leggings and other garments with different coverage, lengths, fabrics and compression. A size that works in one style is not automatically correct in another. Begin on the current Spanx page for the item you plan to buy and open that product’s size information. Use the category chart and any fit notes shown for that specific product.
Spanx’s official Size Guide, accessed October 13, 2026, says its charts and measuring tips are intended to help shoppers order the correct size. The brand’s June 20, 2025 shapewear guide likewise recommends ordering your true size. Product-level instructions take priority when they add a special rule, such as a petite length or a recommendation to size up between sizes.
Identify coverage and intended use
Before measuring, note what the garment is supposed to cover. A high-waisted mid-thigh short has different fit considerations from a brief, a full bodysuit or a camisole. Check whether you need torso length, leg length, waist coverage, thigh coverage or a specific neckline. A garment that fits your circumference but is too short in the torso can feel restrictive and may roll, even when the size on the label appears correct.

Keep the product page open while you measure
Do not rely on a remembered size, a retailer’s generic conversion chart or the size of another brand. Read the measurements requested by the Spanx chart for that item. If the page gives separate advice for regular and petite lengths, between-size shoppers or a particular fabric, follow that advice rather than applying a general rule.
Measure accurately before selecting a size
Measurements are more useful than guessing how much compression you want. Wear thin, close-fitting clothing or measure over underwear, stand naturally and keep the tape level. Do not pull the tape tight enough to indent your skin. Record the numbers the product chart asks for, then compare them with the chart’s ranges.
What you need
- A flexible body-measuring tape is easiest.
- If you do not have one, Spanx suggests wrapping ribbon or string around the relevant area, marking where it meets, and aligning that length against a yardstick.
- A mirror or another person can help keep the tape horizontal and prevent twisting.
How to take the measurement
- Stand relaxed with your feet in a natural position. Do not hold your stomach in or inflate your chest.
- Measure each area requested by the product chart. Keep the tape parallel to the floor for circumference measurements.
- Write down each result immediately, including the unit used by the chart.
- Repeat any measurement that looks inconsistent. A loose tape, a tilted tape or measuring over bulky clothing can change the result.
- Match your measurements to the exact size range shown on the product page. If different measurements point to different sizes, use the item’s between-size guidance or contact Spanx support rather than automatically choosing the smaller size.
When measurements fall in different size columns
Do not average measurements or choose a size because one number seems more important. A bodysuit may need enough length for your torso, while a short or brief may depend more on the waist, hip or thigh measurements requested on its page. First check whether the product page gives a specific between-size instruction. If it does not, ask Spanx support which proportion or measurement governs that style. The general advice to order your true size does not eliminate the need to account for a garment’s construction.
Recheck after body or wardrobe changes
Use current measurements when replacing an older garment. A previous Spanx size, a size in jeans or a label from another shapewear brand is only a reference. Measure again if your body measurements have changed, if you are choosing a different coverage category, or if the new product has a different rise, torso or leg length.
Choose your size by measurements, then adjust compression separately
Spanx’s general shapewear guidance is to order your true size. The brand’s FAQ explains that sizing down does not create the intended extra compression; it can instead make the garment uncomfortable or distort the fit. If you want stronger sculpting, select a higher compression level in the same size category.
What to do when you are between sizes
There is no universal between-size rule for every Spanx garment. Follow the product page. Some items may direct a between-size shopper to size up, while another style may use a different construction or length recommendation. A size-up instruction is not evidence that every Spanx product should be bought larger.
How to separate the two decisions
| Decision | What it controls | How to make it |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Whether the garment matches your body measurements and sits correctly | Measure and use the chart for the exact product |
| Compression level | How strongly the fabric is designed to sculpt or smooth | Choose the level that matches your desired effect and wearing time |
| Length or proportion | Where hems, waistbands and torso panels land | Use the product’s regular/petite or length guidance where provided |
Trying to obtain more power by taking a smaller size changes the first decision to compensate for the second. That can create pressure points, rolling and restricted movement without delivering an even, comfortable shape.

Understand Spanx compression levels
Spanx describes five compression levels, ranging from SPANXsmooth, the lightest, to SPANXsupersculpt, the strongest. The level is a product feature, not a substitute for the size chart. A light level may suit everyday smoothing or longer wear; a stronger level may suit a more sculpted look when you can tolerate firmer support for the intended period.
| Compression position | Named Spanx level or description | Use the choice for |
|---|---|---|
| Lightest | SPANXsmooth | Subtle smoothing and a lighter, less structured feel |
| Intermediate | Three levels between the lightest and strongest; the official guidance does not name those levels universally | Moderate shaping when a product page identifies an appropriate middle level |
| Strongest | SPANXsupersculpt | The firmest sculpting option in the five-level range |
Names, fabric and available levels can differ by collection. Read the individual product description for the level offered by the garment you are considering. Compression should feel supportive, not painful; a stronger level still needs to fit your measurements.
Match compression to the occasion
Think about how long you will wear the item and how much movement it must allow. A firmer level may be reasonable for a short event if you can breathe, sit and walk normally. For work, travel or extended wear, a lighter level may be easier to tolerate. This is a comfort and use decision, not a reason to alter the size shown by your measurements.
Check the fit after you put it on
Putting on shapewear correctly can take more care than pulling on ordinary underwear. Gather the garment and work it up gradually instead of yanking one section into place. Smooth the fabric over your body so the compression is distributed evenly. Waistbands, leg openings and seams should lie flat without cutting into skin.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSigns of a suitable fit
- The garment feels snug and close to the body but does not make you feel trapped.
- You can breathe normally, sit down, bend and walk without fighting the fabric.
- The waistband and leg openings stay in place without digging in.
- The fabric remains smooth under your clothing rather than forming hard folds.
- Compression feels reasonably even instead of concentrated at one seam or edge.
Signs the size or style is wrong
- Pinching, painful pressure, numbness or tingling.
- Rolling at the waist, thighs or torso soon after you move.
- Gaping, sagging or excess fabric that cannot be smoothed into place.
- Shortness in the torso or legs that pulls the garment downward.
- Breathing or normal movement feels restricted.
Spanx says shapewear should feel like a second skin—snug but not restrictive. Persistent pinching, rolling or discomfort is a reason to stop wearing the garment and reassess both size and style. Do not assume that enduring pain is proof of effective sculpting.
Use movement as the final test
Stand, sit, walk, bend and raise your arms. Check the garment under the clothing you actually plan to wear. A fit that appears fine while standing can reveal a short torso, migrating waistband or tight leg opening once you move. Reassess after several minutes rather than judging only the first moment you pull it on.
Example: SPANXsculpt OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short
The OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short illustrates why product-specific instructions matter. Its official product page says to use your measurements, choose Regular if you are above 5 ft 4 in, and choose Petite if you are below 5 ft 4 in. It also says to size up when between sizes and mentions trying Petite if rolling is an issue.

These directions apply to that cited OnCore short. They should not be treated as a universal Spanx rule for every short, bodysuit or brief. Another garment can use a different rise, inseam, torso length or fabric and therefore require different advice.

Troubleshoot common fit problems
The waistband rolls
First make sure the garment is fully positioned and that no shirt or underwear is trapped underneath it. If it still rolls, check whether the rise or torso length suits you. On the cited OnCore short, the product page specifically mentions trying Petite for rolling; for other garments, follow that item’s guidance. Sizing down is not a reliable fix and can increase pressure at the edge.
The leg openings pinch
Check that the leg fabric is spread evenly and not twisted. If the opening continues to bite into your skin, reassess the size and the style’s leg length. A different cut may distribute compression more comfortably than a smaller size of the same cut.
The garment slides down
Sliding can result from an incorrect size, insufficient torso or rise length, or a mismatch between the garment and your body proportions. Recheck the product’s length options and chart. If your measurements indicate the correct size but the garment still moves, the style may simply not provide the coverage you need.
The garment feels too tight everywhere
Remove it rather than trying to stretch it through discomfort. Confirm that you used the current chart and measured without pulling the tape tight. If the measurements place you in the same size, consider a lighter compression level. If they place you between sizes, apply the item’s stated between-size rule.

Check whether the garment covers the area you want to smooth and whether you selected the intended compression level. Move to a stronger level in the correct size if the product line offers one. Do not take a smaller size simply to increase compression.
The garment looks smooth but feels wrong
Visual smoothness is not enough. If you cannot breathe normally, sit comfortably or move naturally, remove the garment and reassess. An apparently sleek result does not justify numbness, painful pressure or restricted movement. Try the product’s lighter compression option or a different cut only after confirming the size chart.

Account for wearing time and movement
The best choice depends on how you will use the garment. For a brief event, you may prefer firmer sculpting if you can move and breathe comfortably. For travel, work or many hours of wear, a lighter level and a style with stable edges may be more practical. The size does not change with the occasion; the compression level and coverage are the variables to reconsider.
Test the fit before committing to an outfit
- Put the garment on over the underwear you expect to wear with it.
- Stand, sit, walk, bend and raise your arms.
- Wear the planned outer clothing and check for visible lines, rolled edges or displaced hems.
- After several minutes, reassess breathing, pressure and movement rather than judging the fit only while standing still.
- Follow the seller’s current return and hygiene conditions before removing tags or wearing the item for an extended period.
Follow the garment’s care instructions
Care can affect stretch, recovery and long-term fit. Spanx directs shoppers to the garment’s inner label or the product page for the specific washing and care instructions. Follow those instructions instead of applying a generic shapewear routine. Heat, harsh treatment or an unsuitable drying method can damage elastic fibers and change how the garment fits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before washing
- Read the inner label and save the product page’s care information.
- Close any fasteners and separate the garment from items that could snag it.
- Do not assume that two Spanx styles with similar compression can be cleaned identically.
After washing
Inspect the waistband, seams and leg openings before the next wear. A garment that has lost recovery, developed a permanently stretched edge or changed shape should not be forced into service by choosing a smaller size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A concise decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact Spanx product and coverage?
- Did you open that product’s current chart and read its fit notes?
- Did you measure the requested areas without pulling the tape tight?
- Does your selected size match the chart rather than your desired compression?
- Did you apply any product-specific regular, petite, length or between-size instruction?
- Is the compression level appropriate for the effect and wearing time?
- After putting it on, can you breathe, sit, walk and bend normally?
- Are the edges smooth and stable rather than pinching or rolling?
- Have you checked the inner label or product page for care instructions?
Following that sequence keeps size, compression and garment proportions separate. The result should be a close, smooth fit that supports movement instead of requiring you to tolerate pain for the sake of a smaller label.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should Spanx shapewear fit?
Spanx says it should feel like a second skin: snug but not restrictive. You should be able to breathe, sit, walk and bend normally. Pinching, painful pressure, numbness, persistent rolling or restricted movement indicates that the size or style needs reassessment.
Should I size down in Spanx for more compression?
No. Spanx’s June 20, 2025 shapewear guide and its FAQ recommend ordering your true size. If you want stronger sculpting, choose a higher compression level rather than a smaller size.

What if I am between Spanx sizes?
Check the individual product page because there is no single rule for every style. The SPANXsculpt OnCore High-Waisted Mid-Thigh Short specifically says to size up between sizes. Do not apply that instruction automatically to another garment.

Can I use one Spanx size for every style?
Not reliably. Bodysuits, shorts, briefs, slips and leggings differ in coverage, rise, torso length, leg length, fabric and compression. Measure for the exact product and follow its chart and fit notes.
What should I do if my Spanx waistband rolls?
Make sure the garment is fully positioned and the fabric is not twisted or trapped over another layer. Recheck the rise, length and product guidance. The OnCore short’s page mentions trying Petite for rolling; other styles may require different advice. Sizing down is not a dependable solution.
How do I measure without a tape measure?
Spanx suggests using ribbon or string. Wrap it around the required area, mark where it meets, then lay that length against a yardstick to obtain the measurement. Keep the ribbon level and avoid pulling it tight.
Which Spanx compression level should I choose?
Spanx describes five levels, from SPANXsmooth, the lightest, to SPANXsupersculpt, the strongest. Choose the level that matches your desired smoothing and planned wearing time, but keep the size dictated by your measurements.
Where can I find care instructions for my Spanx garment?
Check the garment’s inner label and the current product page. Spanx directs shoppers to those sources for style-specific washing and care instructions because similar-looking garments may have different requirements.
The Bottom Line
Measure for the exact Spanx product, follow its chart and special length or between-size instructions, and keep size separate from compression. True size should feel snug but comfortable; choose a stronger compression level—not a smaller label—when you want more sculpting.
