For the current Carrera Subway-E 2, start with Halfords’ 2026 height chart: choose S (16-inch) for 160–170 cm, M (18-inch) for 167–177 cm, or L (19-inch) for 175–188 cm. Those ranges overlap, so height alone cannot choose a unique size at 167–170 cm or 175–177 cm. In an overlap, compare both bikes in person, checking standover clearance, handlebar reach and riding posture before you ride. The best size is the one that gives you safe clearance and comfortable control, not simply the letter that appears first on the chart.
Current Carrera Subway-E 2 size chart
Halfords’ current 2026 product information lists three frame sizes for the Carrera Subway-E 2. The nominal frame measurement is shown in inches, while the recommended rider range is given in centimetres.
| Size | Frame label | Height range on the current chart | What the chart tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | 16-inch | 160–170 cm | The starting option for riders in this height band. |
| M | 18-inch | 167–177 cm | The starting option for riders in this height band. |
| L | 19-inch | 175–188 cm | The starting option for riders in this height band. |
The chart is a screening tool, not a complete fit assessment. The S and M ranges overlap from 167 to 170 cm. The M and L ranges overlap from 175 to 177 cm. If your height falls in one of those intervals, the chart deliberately leaves two plausible sizes; it does not identify one universally correct frame.
Make sure you are looking at the current Subway-E 2 information. Older Carrera Subway E 2.0 pages use different frame labels and height ranges, so applying an old table to the current bike can lead to the wrong choice.

Why height cannot settle every size decision
Two people of the same height can have different proportions, flexibility, riding preferences and footwear. A chart based only on total height cannot show whether a particular frame gives you enough clearance when you stand over it or whether the bars feel too far away. The owner’s manual states the safety consequence plainly: “If your bicycle does not fit properly, you may lose control and fall.”
Fit also changes how confidently you can start, stop and steer. A frame that feels manageable when you are seated may still be awkward when you put a foot down at a junction. Conversely, a smaller frame is not automatically safer if its handlebar position forces you into an uncomfortable or cramped posture. Treat the chart as the first filter, then use a physical fit check.
Step-by-step method for choosing your frame
- Confirm the model and edition. Read the listing or frame information carefully and verify that it says Carrera Subway-E 2. Do not substitute measurements from an older Subway E 2.0 page. The current 2026 chart is the relevant reference for this model.
- Measure your height accurately. Stand barefoot on a hard, level floor with your back against a wall. Keep your heels together, look straight ahead and place a flat object on your head. Mark the wall and measure from the floor to that mark in centimetres. Measure twice; record the result rather than rounding it into a different chart band.
- Read the chart as a range. If your height falls only within one row, begin with that size. If it falls in an overlap, write down both candidate sizes. Do not select the larger frame merely because you are near the top of the smaller range, or the smaller frame merely because you are near the bottom of the larger one.
- Arrange an in-person comparison when possible. Ask a Halfords Bikehut store to let you stand over and sit on both candidate sizes. A side-by-side check is more informative than trying one frame and guessing how the other would feel.
- Check clearance while wearing riding shoes. Straddle the bicycle with both feet on the ground and check the space between you and the top tube. The Carrera/Halfords owner’s manual gives general guidance of at least two inches (50 mm). That manual predates 2018 and is not a Subway-E 2-specific measurement, so use it as a general safety check and ask Halfords to confirm the fit for this model.
- Check the reach to the controls. Sit in your normal riding position and place your hands on the grips and brake levers. You should be able to reach the controls without locking your elbows, hunching your shoulders or sliding forward on the saddle. If you cannot hold the bars and operate the levers naturally, the frame is not a good fit in its current setup.
- Check the riding posture. A 2026 T3 review describes the Subway-E 2’s geometry and handlebar arrangement as encouraging a more forward posture than a typical upright hybrid. That is a reviewer’s observation, not a formal size rule. Decide whether that position feels comfortable for the way you intend to ride, and compare both sizes rather than assuming the posture will suit you.
- Resolve the fit before riding away. If a new bicycle does not fit, the manual advises asking a Halfords Bikehut store to exchange it before riding. Confirm the frame choice while the bike is still eligible for an exchange, rather than hoping an uncomfortable fit will improve after several rides.
What to compare when you are between sizes
When your height is in an overlap, use the following checks in the same order for both frames. They turn a vague “small or medium?” question into observable decisions.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Standover clearance
Stand over the bicycle in the shoes you will actually use. You need room to dismount quickly without contacting the frame. Use the manual’s 50 mm general guidance as a reference, but do not treat it as a measured specification for the Subway-E 2. If one candidate leaves clearly more usable clearance while still allowing a relaxed reach, it deserves serious preference.

2. Reach and control access
With the saddle at a sensible starting height, place your hands on the grips and brake levers. Your shoulders should stay relaxed and your elbows should not be forced straight. You should be able to cover the brakes without stretching or shifting your body toward the bars. Compare the two bikes in the same footwear and with the saddle positions adjusted enough to make the comparison fair.
3. Preferred posture
Some riders want a relatively upright view of traffic; others are comfortable leaning farther forward. The T3 description of the Subway-E 2’s posture means you should pay particular attention to how your back, neck and wrists feel during the store test. Choose the size that lets you maintain the intended posture without bracing yourself against the bars.
4. Starting, stopping and putting a foot down
Ask to perform a stationary start and stop if the store permits it. Notice whether you can step off confidently and put a foot down without the frame or a stretched reach making the movement awkward. This practical check often distinguishes two sizes that both appear acceptable on paper.

How to decide in each overlap
| Your measured height | Chart result | Decision process |
|---|---|---|
| 160–166 cm | S only | Start with S, then verify clearance and reach in the normal way. |
| 167–170 cm | S or M | Compare S and M in person. Select the frame that provides adequate standover room and a relaxed reach for your preferred posture. |
| 171–174 cm | M only | Start with M, then complete the physical fit checks. |
| 175–177 cm | M or L | Compare M and L in person, paying close attention to bar reach, clearance and how easily you can stop and dismount. |
| 178–188 cm | L only | Start with L, then verify the fit rather than relying on height alone. |
These examples show why a single “cut-off height” answer is misleading. At 168 cm, for example, both S and M are within the current chart. At 176 cm, both M and L are within it. The correct response in either case is a comparison, not an automatic upgrade or downgrade.
Practical fit checks in a Halfords Bikehut store
Call ahead if you need both sizes assembled for comparison; stock and display availability can vary by store. Take the shoes and clothing you normally use for cycling, because bulky footwear or a different sole can alter how the standover check feels.
- Ask staff to confirm that each bicycle is the current Subway-E 2, not an older 2.0 version.
- Stand over each frame with your feet planted and check for usable clearance.
- Sit on the saddle, hold the grips and reach the brake levers repeatedly rather than only touching them once.
- Ask whether the saddle can be positioned safely for your leg extension while preserving a comfortable reach to the bars.
- Try a slow start and stop if the store allows a test ride.
- Tell staff which posture you prefer and whether your usual rides involve frequent stops, traffic or longer continuous stretches.
Staff can help you determine whether the bicycle fits and whether an adjustment is appropriate. Do not attempt to compensate for a fundamentally wrong frame by forcing the saddle or bars into an extreme position.

An online chart can identify your candidate size, but it cannot reproduce the standover and reach checks. If you are outside an overlap, order the charted size and review the retailer’s exchange terms before payment. If you are inside an overlap, look for a retailer or store process that allows an in-person comparison or a straightforward exchange.

Using an old Subway E 2.0 table
Older pages may show different labels and height bands. A result that looks authoritative can still be for another edition. Always match the chart to the current Subway-E 2 product information.
Treating an overlap as an error
The overlapping ranges are intentional. They indicate that two frames may be reasonable starting points for riders in those heights, not that one row is broken or that you must average the two sizes.
Choosing by frame number alone
The 16-, 18- and 19-inch labels are useful identifiers, but they do not describe every aspect of how the bicycle will feel. Clearance, reach and posture are the deciding checks.

Guessing from inseam formulas
The sources for the current model do not provide a Subway-E 2-specific inseam recommendation or a complete geometry table. Do not apply an online inseam formula as if it were an official specification. Use the physical standover check instead.
Ignoring the handlebar position
The 2026 T3 review’s observation about a more forward posture is a reminder to test the bars, not a reason to choose a particular size sight unseen. A frame that meets the height chart can still feel wrong if the reach is uncomfortable.
Riding first and fixing the problem later
The manual recommends exchanging a new bicycle that does not fit before riding. Delaying the decision can make an exchange harder and exposes you to avoidable control problems.
Bottom line
Use the current chart as your starting point: S for 160–170 cm, M for 167–177 cm and L for 175–188 cm. If your height is 167–170 cm or 175–177 cm, compare both listed sizes rather than assuming one is correct. Choose the frame that gives you the required standover clearance, comfortable access to the controls and a posture you can maintain confidently, then confirm the fit with Halfords before riding.
