Use the size chart for the exact graphic T-shirt you plan to buy, then compare its garment measurements with a T-shirt you already own and like. Check chest width, body length and—if listed—shoulder width, and make sure you know whether the chart gives a flat measurement or a full circumference. Size letters alone are not a reliable way to compare different brands, shirt blanks or cuts.
The most dependable approach is to choose a reference shirt with the fit you want, measure it flat, and compare those numbers with the specific product chart. Then account for the tee’s stated cut and check the seller’s current measurement tolerance and exchange information. This does not guarantee a perfect fit, but it replaces a guess based on S, M or L with a comparison you can make yourself.
Start with the product-specific size chart
Open the size guide on the page for the exact shirt, not just a general brand chart. A graphic tee may be printed on a particular blank or offered in a specific collection, and its chart or cut may differ from another product sold by the same retailer. Check that the guide applies to the style, fit and region you are ordering.
Look for measurements of the finished garment, such as chest, length and shoulders. A chart based on body measurements is not directly interchangeable with one that lists shirt measurements: the first describes the wearer, while the second describes the garment. If the chart does not say which it uses, ask the seller before choosing between close sizes.

Do not assume an S, M or L will match the same letter in another brand. Retailer guides from Redbubble and Jockey India both direct shoppers toward actual measurements rather than relying on the label alone; each guide applies to its own products.
Before using a chart, check its title, notes and any product-specific links. A broad brand guide may not cover every blank, collection or fit. A retailer may also publish separate information for fitted and relaxed collections, or specify that a chart applies only to products made with one particular blank. If the product page and linked chart seem to describe different styles, pause and confirm which information applies rather than treating either chart as interchangeable.
Also check the units and the chart’s measurement labels. Do not compare a number in inches with one in centimeters without converting it, and do not assume that a column called “chest” means the same thing on every page. The difference between garment measurements and body measurements—and between a flat width and a circumference—can be more consequential than the difference between two nearby size labels.

Measure a T-shirt that already fits the way you want
- Choose a reference shirt. Pick a tee with a fit you would be happy to get from the new shirt. If you want a relaxed result, use a relaxed tee as your reference rather than trying to infer that fit from a size letter.
- Lay it flat. Smooth the shirt on a flat surface without stretching it. A flexible measuring tape is convenient, but a ruler can work if it is long enough.
- Measure the chest across the shirt. Measure from one armpit to the other, straight across the garment. This is a flat width, often called pit-to-pit.
- Measure the body length. Measure from the high shoulder point near the collar down to the hem. Keep the measuring line straight.
- Measure the shoulders if useful. If the seller lists shoulder width, measure your reference tee across the shoulder seams and compare like with like.
Use one shirt consistently as your reference. If you measure one tee for chest and a different one for length, the resulting combination may not represent a fit you have actually tried. If you have more than one tee you like, measure each one; their dimensions can give you a practical range to compare with the product chart instead of a single target.
Keep the garment smooth but do not pull the fabric taut. The point is to record the shirt’s laid-flat dimensions, not to stretch it to a larger size. Take care to start and end at the same points the seller’s guide describes. For length, for example, compare the chart’s stated starting point with the high shoulder point near the collar on your reference tee. If the seller uses a different method or its wording is unclear, ask before making a close call.
Redbubble’s help article, updated April 11, 2025, describes this flat-lay method for most of its T-shirts: measure pit-to-pit, double that measurement for chest, and measure from shoulder to hem for length. Its fitted and relaxed collections have their own size information. That is Redbubble-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every retailer.
Check what “chest” means on the chart
A flat chest width and a full chest circumference are different measurements. If your reference tee measures 20 inches from armpit to armpit, for example, its approximate circumference around the garment is 40 inches. That arithmetic helps only when the seller’s chart gives a full circumference and the shirt is measured in a comparable way.

Before comparing, identify the chart’s measurement method:
- Flat width or pit-to-pit: Compare it with the straight-across measurement from your reference shirt.
- Full circumference: Compare it with twice the reference shirt’s flat width.
- Unclear wording: Do not guess. Ask the seller whether the number is a flat garment measurement, a circumference, or a body measurement.
Comparing a flat width directly with a circumference can make a size look far more different than it is. The measurement labels and method matter as much as the numbers.
For example, if your reference tee measures 20 inches pit-to-pit and the chart lists a chest measurement of 40 inches, the figures may be comparable if the chart means full garment circumference. If that chart instead lists flat width, 40 inches would not be a like-for-like comparison. Conversely, a chart entry of 20 inches could describe the flat width. The number alone does not tell you which reading is correct; look for a diagram, definition or explanation on the product page.
Redbubble says most of the T-shirts offered on its site use flat-lay measurements for sizing. That is helpful context for its own chart, but it does not establish how another seller defines chest. If the listing gives only a bare number, do not silently choose the interpretation that seems most plausible. A short question to the retailer about the measurement method can prevent a mistaken comparison.

Compare chest, length and cut together
When two sizes both seem plausible, compare chest and body length first, then shoulder width if the chart provides it. The closest chest measurement is not automatically the best choice if the shirt would be too short or too long for your preference.
| What to compare | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Chest | Match the chart’s flat-width or circumference method to the measurement from your reference tee. |
| Body length | Compare shoulder-to-hem length with your reference shirt to judge where the new tee is likely to fall. |
| Shoulder width | Use it when listed to distinguish between options that have similar chest measurements. |
| Cut or fit label | Check whether the product is described as fitted, regular, relaxed or oversized, then choose measurements consistent with the silhouette you want. |
| Measurement tolerance | Factor in any stated variation when two options are close; tolerances are product- or retailer-specific. |
Fit labels do not have a universal measurement definition in the available retailer guidance. Treat them as additional product information, not a substitute for the chart. For instance, Honeyshirt describes the products in its guide as using the classic heavyweight cotton Gildan 5000 blank, with a unisex straight cut. Its advice to go up for a relaxed fit or layering, or down for a closer fit, applies to those products and that store—not to graphic tees generally.
If you want an oversized silhouette, look for a product intentionally sold in an oversized cut and use its own chart. Simply ordering a larger size in a regular-cut tee may change its width and length without producing the intended proportions.

Think of the decision as a comparison of several dimensions, not a hunt for one perfect number. A candidate might be close to your reference shirt in chest but longer, or close in length but wider. Note which difference matters most to your own preferences. The table is useful because it makes that trade-off visible rather than hiding it behind the label on the size selector.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe listed cut helps you interpret those dimensions. A retailer’s description of “relaxed” or “oversized” is product information, not proof that every garment with that label will match another seller’s version. Use the cut description alongside the chart, and prioritize intentional cut information over the assumption that going up one size always creates the silhouette you want.
Make the choice when sizes are close
- Compare your reference measurements with each candidate size. Keep chest, length and shoulder width separate rather than reducing the decision to one number.
- Prioritize the dimensions that matter most to your fit. If body length is usually a problem for you, give it more weight; if you prefer a roomy torso, focus on chest and the stated cut.
- Account for the listing’s tolerance. If the seller says measurements may vary, a small difference between your reference shirt and a chart entry may not guarantee a visibly different result.
- Review the current product and exchange information. Policies and product details can change, so verify them on the listing or the retailer’s current policy page before ordering.
- Ask the seller about unresolved measurements. In particular, clarify whether chest means flat width or circumference and whether the chart is for that exact shirt.
There is no universal ease allowance or cross-brand conversion established by these retailer guides. If neither size clearly matches, the most useful next step is to resolve uncertainty about the chart or the garment rather than relying on a generic conversion rule.
When the chart is clear and two sizes still seem possible, write down the dimensions side by side. For example, compare each candidate’s chest, length and available shoulder measurement with the corresponding dimensions from your reference shirt. Then decide which candidate better fits your priorities and the garment’s stated cut. The sources do not provide a universal formula for weighting chest against length, so the preference is yours; the measurements simply make the trade-off easier to see.
Do not treat a small chart difference as a guarantee that one size will feel noticeably different. If the seller publishes a tolerance, use it as context for close comparisons. Redbubble, for example, states a ±1-inch tolerance for measurements in its guide. That figure belongs to Redbubble’s own information and should not be applied to other retailers. If a seller publishes no tolerance, do not assume that the Redbubble figure—or any other retailer’s figure—applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck exchange terms before you place the order, especially if your comparison is uncertain. An exchange window, eligibility rules or other policy information belongs to the retailer and can change. A policy can help you understand your options, but it does not determine which size will fit, and it should not be assumed to be the same across stores.

- Redbubble: Its Help Center article, updated April 11, 2025, says most of its T-shirts use flat-lay measurements. It gives a ±1-inch tolerance for measurements in its guide and warns that international product sizes may vary. Those details apply to Redbubble’s guide and products; they are not a general apparel tolerance or a promise about another seller.
- Jockey India: Its sizing guide recommends using actual chest, shoulder and length dimensions and comparing them with a well-fitting tee laid flat. The chart is specific to Jockey products.
- Honeyshirt: Its guide, last updated October 2, 2026, describes the fit and blank used for the products in its print-partner catalog. It reports that its store offers exchanges within 60 days of delivery. That exchange window is a Honeyshirt policy reported in that guide, not a universal return rule; check the current terms for any order.
These examples are useful for understanding methods and the kinds of details sellers may publish. Their measurements, tolerances, fit recommendations and policies should not be transferred to a different retailer.
Redbubble’s help article includes the statement, “Most of the T-shirts offered on Redbubble use flat lay measurements for sizing.” Read that as a statement about Redbubble’s products, not a description of online T-shirt charts in general. The same article says that fitted and relaxed collections have their own size information, another reason to consult the product or collection details rather than applying one guide everywhere.
Honeyshirt’s example also shows why the blank matters. Its sizing advice concerns a guide for products using the classic heavyweight cotton Gildan 5000 blank in its print partner’s catalog, described as a unisex straight cut. The recommendation to go up for a relaxed fit or layering, or down for a closer fit, is limited to those products and that store. It is not a conversion rule for tees made with other blanks or cuts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common sizing mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by letter size alone: Letters do not guarantee the same garment dimensions across brands, blanks or product lines.
- Mixing flat width and circumference: Confirm the chart’s method before comparing the chest number.
- Ignoring length: A chest match can still produce a shirt that feels too short or too long.
- Using a different shirt as the reference: Compare against a tee whose fit you actually want, measured flat and without stretching.
- Treating a fit label as a standard: Fitted, regular, relaxed and oversized are product descriptions; use the measurements for that garment.
- Assuming every retailer has the same tolerance or exchange policy: These are seller-specific details that should be checked for the current product and order.
Another common mistake is to make an adjustment based on a rule that the product page does not support. The researched retailer guides do not establish a general shrinkage adjustment, a universal amount of ease, or a cross-brand size conversion. If you are concerned about a particular garment’s fabric or care instructions, check what its seller says rather than adding an arbitrary amount to the chart measurement.
Finally, do not confuse a useful method with a guarantee. A flat-lay comparison can help you choose, but it cannot confirm every detail of how a shirt will fit you. The available sources are retailer guides for their own products. If the product-specific chart leaves an important point unclear, ask the seller; if it is clear, compare it carefully with a tee you already know.

Is T-shirt chest width the same as chest circumference?
No. Pit-to-pit is a flat width across the garment; full circumference goes around it. If your reference shirt measures 20 inches flat, doubling gives an approximate 40-inch circumference for comparison when the chart uses full circumference. Confirm the seller’s method before comparing.
Should I size up for an oversized graphic tee?
Check whether the product is intentionally sold in an oversized cut and use its chart. Simply sizing up a regular-cut tee can change width and length without producing the intended proportions. There is no universal sizing rule for creating an oversized fit.
What if I am between two sizes?
Compare both candidates across chest, length and shoulder width where available. Give more weight to the dimensions that matter most to you and consider the stated fit. If the chart is unclear or the numbers are close, ask the seller and check any listed measurement tolerance.
Are T-shirt sizes the same across brands or regions?
No reliable cross-brand match is established by these retailer guides. Size labels and charts can vary by brand, blank, product line, cut and region. Use the exact product chart, and check any regional sizing notes on the listing.
Can I use another retailer’s measurement tolerance or exchange window?
No. These details are seller-specific and can change. Redbubble’s guide states a ±1-inch measurement tolerance, while Honeyshirt’s guide reports exchanges within 60 days of delivery; neither detail should be assumed to apply to another store. Check the current listing and policy.
Should I size up to allow for shrinkage?
The retailer guides covered here do not establish a general shrinkage adjustment. Check the exact seller’s product and care information rather than applying a universal size-up rule.
The Bottom Line
Choose from the exact product chart, not the size letter: measure a T-shirt you like while it is laid flat, compare chest and length (plus shoulder width when listed), and confirm whether chest means flat width or full circumference. Then account for the stated cut and check the seller’s current tolerance and exchange information. If a key measurement remains unclear, ask the retailer rather than relying on a universal conversion.
