Choose a Sentinel mission by the variable you need to measure, not by the satellite number. Use Sentinel-1 for all-weather, day-and-night radar observations; Sentinel-2 for high-resolution multispectral land imagery; Sentinel-3 for ocean colour, land reflectance, sea and land temperature, topography and vegetation products; Sentinel-5P for atmospheric composition; and Sentinel-6 for global sea-surface height. Then select the processing level, latency and quality information that match your workflow.
Start with the scientific variable
A Sentinel dataset is useful only when its measured signal answers your research question. Optical reflectance, radar backscatter, atmospheric radiance, sea-surface height and ocean colour are different observables. They cannot be substituted simply because they cover the same location.
- Land cover, vegetation, soil, inland water or coastal optical imagery: begin with Sentinel-2.
- Land or ocean observations when clouds, darkness or radar response matter: begin with Sentinel-1.
- Ocean colour, land reflectance, sea-surface temperature, land temperature, topography or vegetation products: begin with Sentinel-3 and select the relevant instrument or product.
- Trace gases, air quality, clouds or aerosols: begin with Sentinel-5P.
- Global sea-surface height, operational oceanography or climate studies: begin with Sentinel-6.
These are starting points rather than automatic answers. Before downloading, confirm the exact bands or geophysical variable, spatial and temporal suitability, product definition, quality flags and coverage for your study area and period.

Sentinel-1: radar for land and ocean
Sentinel-1 uses synthetic-aperture radar (SAR), so it measures the way surfaces scatter microwave energy rather than the sunlight reflected by an optical sensor. ESA describes the mission as all-weather, day-and-night radar imaging for land and ocean. That makes it valuable when cloud cover or darkness would interrupt an optical time series, and when the radar response itself is part of the science.

For ocean work, Sentinel-1 has systematically distributed Level-2 products for wind, wave and current applications. Those products are higher-level geophysical outputs, not interchangeable with a generic radar image. Select the ocean product whose variable and processing status match the analysis, and check its quality information before using it.
For land work, the acquisition mode, polarization, orbit and processing level affect what can be inferred. A radar image can reveal structure, roughness and moisture-related changes, but it is not a substitute for optical reflectance or a vegetation spectrum. Interpret the physical meaning of the signal before combining it with other missions.
Sentinel-2: multispectral, high-resolution land monitoring
Sentinel-2 is ESA’s multispectral, high-resolution land-monitoring mission. It is the natural first choice for many land-cover, vegetation, soil, inland-water and coastal-imaging studies that depend on reflected light and multiple spectral bands.

Check the bands required by your index or classification method, the resolution of those bands, the product level, cloud conditions and the date of acquisition. The available material does not establish a universal band, resolution or revisit specification for every Sentinel-2 product, so use the technical documentation for the specific collection in the live catalogue.
Optical observations are affected by clouds and illumination. A clear-looking scene may still contain cloud shadow, haze or water-surface effects that require masking. If cloud or darkness makes the optical record unusable, consider whether Sentinel-1 or a combined workflow provides the missing observations.
Sentinel-3: several instruments, several observables
Sentinel-3 is not one interchangeable image stream. Its processing chains include the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR), the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) and the Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL), as well as combined SLSTR/OLCI products.
ESA associates Sentinel-3 products with:
- ocean colour;
- land reflectance;
- sea-surface and land-surface temperature;
- ocean and land topography; and
- core vegetation products.
Choose the instrument and product chain that measures your variable. An OLCI ocean-colour product, an SLSTR temperature product and an SRAL topography product have different physical meanings, processing and quality checks even though they belong to the same mission.

Sentinel-5P: atmospheric composition
Sentinel-5P is designed for atmospheric-composition research. Its Level-2 products provide atmospheric geophysical parameters including ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide, together with ozone profiles and cloud or aerosol distributions.
For time-sensitive air-quality work, near-real-time (NRT) products are available for the listed atmospheric variables. Non-time-critical processing permits additional calibration and trace-gas retrieval steps, with more relaxed timing and data-availability constraints. The choice is therefore a scientific trade-off: use NRT when timeliness is central, and use the non-time-critical stream when the additional processing and later availability better fit the analysis.
Do not treat a Level-2 trace-gas field as a simple photograph. It is a retrieved atmospheric quantity whose interpretation depends on the product definition, quality flags, observation geometry and atmospheric conditions.
Sentinel-6: global sea-surface height
Sentinel-6 carries a radar altimeter that measures global sea-surface height. It is the mission to investigate first for sea-level, operational-oceanography and climate studies in which the primary observable is water-surface elevation rather than ocean colour, temperature or wind.

Sentinel-6 products have mission-specific definitions and validation information. Confirm the exact variable, corrections, quality indicators and version in the product documentation before calculating trends or comparing records.
Match the product level to your workflow
“Sentinel-1 data” or “Sentinel-5P data” can mean raw measurements, focused imagery or a retrieved geophysical variable. Product level determines how much processing you must perform and what type of scientific quantity you receive.
Sentinel-1 levels
| Level | What it contains | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Level-0 | Compressed, unfocused raw data | Your workflow requires the instrument-level starting point and you will perform the focusing and subsequent processing. |
| Level-1 SLC | Focused and georeferenced data using orbit and attitude information, retained in slant-range geometry | You need complex focused radar data, including the phase information associated with SLC processing. |
| Level-1 GRD | Focused, detected, multilooked data projected to ground range | You need detected radar imagery in ground-range geometry rather than complex slant-range data. |
| Level-2 | Systematically distributed ocean products for wind, wave and current applications | Your analysis needs those ocean geophysical variables instead of a radar image. |
These definitions describe Sentinel-1 specifically. Do not assume that the same level names have identical contents on another Sentinel mission.

Sentinel-5P levels and timing modes
| Product | Contents | Workflow implication |
|---|---|---|
| Level-1B | Geolocated, radiometrically corrected top-of-atmosphere radiances and solar irradiances | You receive corrected measurement data and must use the relevant retrieval or processing chain for atmospheric quantities. |
| Level-2 | Atmospheric geophysical parameters | You can work with retrieved quantities such as ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, ozone profiles and cloud or aerosol distributions. |
| Near-real-time Level-2 | Rapidly supplied atmospheric products for the supported variables | Use when a timely result matters; check the product’s quality and processing status. |
| Non-time-critical processing | Processing with additional calibration and trace-gas retrieval steps and relaxed timing or availability constraints | Use when later delivery is acceptable and the extra processing is more important than immediate access. |
Sentinel-3 processing chains
Sentinel-3 has separate processing chains for SLSTR, OLCI and SRAL, plus combined SLSTR/OLCI products. Select the chain according to whether you need temperature, colour or reflectance, topography, vegetation or a combined observable. The mission label does not remove the need to read the product definition.

A practical selection procedure
- Write the variable in measurable terms. Replace “study ocean health” with a quantity such as ocean colour, sea-surface temperature, wind, waves, currents or sea-surface height. Replace “monitor crops” with a reflectance-derived vegetation measure, radar response or another explicit observable.
- Choose the sensor modality. Select optical multispectral data for reflected-light information, radar when microwave scattering or all-weather/day-and-night acquisition is important, atmospheric radiance or retrieval products for trace gases, or radar altimetry for sea-surface height.
- Choose the mission and instrument. Use Sentinel-1 for radar land/ocean observations, Sentinel-2 for high-resolution multispectral land monitoring, the appropriate Sentinel-3 chain for colour, reflectance, temperature, topography or vegetation, Sentinel-5P for atmospheric composition, and Sentinel-6 for global sea-surface height.
- Define the time requirement. Decide whether the study needs rapid delivery, a consistent historical record, or the most complete processing available after a delay. NRT and non-time-critical Sentinel-5P products make this trade-off explicit.
- Set the processing level. Decide whether you need raw or near-raw measurements, focused imagery, detected ground-range imagery or a retrieved geophysical variable. Avoid downloading a higher-level product that discards information your method requires, or a raw product that creates unnecessary processing work.
- Check spatial and temporal suitability. Confirm the product’s resolution, observation frequency, orbit or swath characteristics and coverage for the exact region and dates. The mission name does not guarantee that every product observes every location at the interval your design assumes.
- Read quality and validation documentation. Identify quality flags, calibration and validation status, known limitations, atmospheric or geometric corrections and the recommended masking rules. Carry those flags into your analysis rather than filtering them informally.
- Download a small test set. Inspect metadata, coordinate reference information, acquisition time, units, flags and file structure before building a large pipeline. Confirm that the variables and dimensions match your software and statistical design.
- Record the exact collection and version. Keep the mission, instrument, product level, processing mode, acquisition dates and catalogue identifiers with your results so another researcher can reproduce the selection.

| How do I measure ocean colour or land reflectance? | Sentinel-3 | OLCI products and related reflectance or colour chains | Instrument, variable definition, quality flags and spatial suitability |
| How do I measure sea or land temperature? | Sentinel-3 | SLSTR temperature products | Sea versus land product, retrieval conditions and quality screening |
| How do I study ocean or land topography? | Sentinel-3 or Sentinel-6 | Sentinel-3 SRAL topography products or Sentinel-6 sea-surface-height products | Whether the study needs broad sea-surface height or another topographic observable, plus mission-specific corrections |
| How do I analyse atmospheric gases or aerosols? | Sentinel-5P | Level-2 atmospheric composition, cloud and aerosol products | Gas or aerosol variable, NRT versus non-time-critical processing and quality mode |
| How do I obtain ocean wind, wave or current information? | Sentinel-1 | Level-2 ocean products | Exact geophysical product, processing status and validation information |
Resolution, revisit and coverage: what to verify
Resolution and revisit are not interchangeable. A fine spatial resolution may be unnecessary for a basin-scale climate indicator, while a coarse product may miss the feature in a coastal or urban study. Likewise, a frequent observation is useful only if the variable, cloud conditions and quality controls support the intended time series.
For each candidate product, verify:
- the spatial resolution of the variable you will actually analyse, not merely the headline resolution of the mission;
- the temporal sampling available in your region and study period;
- the swath, orbit and viewing geometry that determine coverage;
- the effect of clouds, darkness, aerosols, sea state or other observation conditions;
- the coordinate system, grid and pixel meaning; and
- whether the product is an image, radiance, reflectance, temperature, atmospheric retrieval or another geophysical variable.
The available mission descriptions do not provide complete Sentinel-2 band and resolution specifications, Sentinel-1 acquisition availability for every area and date, or full numeric specifications for Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6. Obtain those values from the current technical documentation and live catalogue for your specific study rather than generalising from the mission name.
Latency and data access
Systematically processed Sentinel data are available through the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem after user registration. The European Space Agency separately describes its Climate Change Initiative Open Data Portal as providing free and open access to more than 100 satellite-derived climate datasets. These are distinct routes: use the Data Space Ecosystem for Sentinel mission products and the CCI portal for climate data records.
ESA’s ground-segment overview says systematically processed data are typically available within 3–24 hours of sensing, with timelines ranging from near-real-time to non-time-critical. Mission-specific descriptions narrow that range for some products: Sentinel-3 core products are typically available within three hours, and Sentinel-5P Level-2 NRT products are described as supplied within three hours after sensing.
Those figures are service and product dependent, not a guarantee for every file. Check the current catalogue, processing status and product metadata when your work depends on a delivery deadline. For climate analyses, consistency of processing and quality screening may matter more than the fastest possible delivery.
Combining Sentinel missions without confusing their signals
Use complementary observables deliberately
A land study might combine Sentinel-2 reflectance with Sentinel-1 radar response to reduce the effect of cloud gaps or add information about surface structure and moisture. An ocean study might use Sentinel-3 temperature or colour with Sentinel-1 wind or wave products. A climate analysis might pair Sentinel-5P atmospheric composition with surface observations or Sentinel-6 sea-surface height.

Such combinations are scientifically meaningful only when the variables are aligned in time and space and their units, uncertainty and quality flags are retained. A radar backscatter value is not another form of optical reflectance, and an atmospheric column retrieval is not a direct surface concentration measurement.
Align acquisition and processing choices
- Match observation dates and account for different overpass times.
- Reproject or resample only after documenting the target grid and interpolation method.
- Keep each mission’s native quality flags until the combined analysis has defined a common screening rule.
- Do not merge Level-1 imagery from one mission with Level-2 geophysical variables from another without accounting for the different processing and uncertainty.
- Document whether a missing value represents no acquisition, cloud or aerosol contamination, an invalid retrieval, or a deliberate quality filter.

Downloading the wrong processing level
Problem: Selecting Level-0 or Level-1 data when the study needs a validated geophysical field, or selecting a detected product when complex phase information is required.
Fix: Write down the input required by the algorithm and map it to the mission’s product definition before downloading.
Ignoring latency mode
Problem: Comparing NRT and non-time-critical atmospheric products as though they had identical timing and processing.
Fix: Choose the mode explicitly, record the processing status and use the mode appropriate to the study’s deadline and accuracy requirements.
Assuming a mission-wide resolution or quality threshold
Problem: Applying one resolution, revisit interval or quality cutoff to every instrument and product in a mission.
Fix: Read the technical documentation for the exact product, version, region and date range.
Current constellation status to check before a long project
Mission status can change during a multi-year study, so confirm the current constellation and product continuity when designing a time series. ESA reports that Sentinel-1B’s mission ended unexpectedly in 2022 and Sentinel-1C launched on 5 December 2024, returning Sentinel-1 to a two-satellite constellation. ESA also reports Sentinel-2C launched on 5 September 2024, Sentinel-3C on 15 September 2026, Sentinel-4 on 1 July 2025 and Sentinel-5 on 13 August 2025.

A decision checklist before you download
- Have you stated the variable as a measurable observable?
- Is the required modality optical, radar, atmospheric retrieval or radar altimetry?
- Did you select the correct mission and, for Sentinel-3, the correct instrument chain?
- Does the product level provide the input your method actually needs?
- Are the spatial resolution, temporal sampling, swath and coverage adequate for your study area and dates?
- Have you decided whether rapid NRT delivery or later, more processed data is appropriate?
- Will you preserve calibration, validation and quality flags?
- Have you checked current product documentation, processing version and catalogue availability?
- Can you explain how clouds, darkness, aerosols, sea state, geometry or missing acquisitions affect the result?
- Have you recorded the exact mission, instrument, level, mode, dates and product identifiers for reproducibility?
Bottom-line selection
For multispectral land imagery, start with Sentinel-2. For all-weather or night-time radar observations and Sentinel-1 ocean wind, wave or current products, start with Sentinel-1. For ocean colour, reflectance, temperature, topography or vegetation, select the appropriate Sentinel-3 instrument and chain. For atmospheric gases, clouds and aerosols, use Sentinel-5P and choose NRT or non-time-critical processing deliberately. For global sea-surface height, investigate Sentinel-6. In every case, the decisive choice is the documented variable, product level, timing and quality information—not the satellite number alone.
