For most Android phones, start with Adaptive or Auto. It can raise the refresh rate when scrolling or compatible games need smoother motion and lower it when the screen is relatively static. Choose the highest fixed rate when smoothness matters more than battery runtime, and choose Standard or 60 Hz when conserving battery matters most or you cannot see a useful difference.
The exact labels, supported rates and behavior depend on your phone. Pixel calls its control Smooth Display; Galaxy phones use Motion smoothness. A panel advertised as 120 Hz also does not guarantee that every app, game or system state will run at 120 Hz.
Refresh rate in plain terms
Refresh rate is the number of times a display can update its image in one second, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60 Hz display refreshes up to 60 times per second; a 120 Hz display can refresh up to 120 times per second. Higher refresh rates can make supported scrolling, system animations and high-frame-rate games appear smoother and make touch interactions feel more immediate.
Refresh rate is different from resolution. Resolution describes how many pixels the screen has, while refresh rate describes how often the image is updated. It is also different from a game’s frame rate: a game may render 120 frames per second, but you will not see all of them if the phone is displaying at 60 Hz. Conversely, a 120 Hz setting cannot create 120 unique frames if an app or game only produces 60.

The three common choices
| Setting | What it does | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive / Auto | Changes the rate according to content, frame cadence and device conditions, within the rates supported by the phone. | Most people who want smooth everyday use without holding the panel at its maximum constantly. | Behavior and minimum/maximum rates vary by manufacturer and model; it is not a universal 1–120 Hz mode. |
| High / maximum available | Uses a high fixed rate, or a manufacturer-defined high mode, when the device and software permit it. | Fast scrolling, animations and games that support high frame rates. | Uses more power than a lower setting in comparable use. Some phones offer 90 Hz rather than 120 Hz. |
| Standard / 60 Hz | Limits the display to the phone’s standard rate, commonly 60 Hz. | Battery-priority days, basic tasks, or anyone who does not notice a worthwhile smoothness improvement. | Scrolling and supported animation can look less fluid than at a higher rate. |
Samsung describes Adaptive as dynamically adjusting up to the device’s supported maximum, while its Standard option is 60 Hz. On compatible models, Samsung’s High mode may lock the display at 120 Hz; some models top out at 90 Hz instead. These are examples of Samsung’s implementation, not rules for every Android phone.
How to choose based on what matters to you
Choose Adaptive or Auto for a balanced default
Adaptive is the sensible starting point when you use your phone for a mix of messaging, browsing, video, social apps and occasional games. The phone can request a higher rate during a long scroll or compatible animation and use a lower rate for content that does not benefit from rapid updates. Android’s adaptive-refresh documentation describes this as selecting rates in response to content frame cadence, but each device maker decides which modes and transitions to expose.
Adaptive is not a promise of maximum smoothness in every app. The system may honor an app’s frame-rate preference, select another display mode, or lower the rate in a power-saving state. If a particular game or scrolling-heavy app is your priority, test it rather than assuming the label guarantees a fixed rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose High or the maximum fixed rate for motion
Use the highest available fixed mode when you consistently prefer the smoothest scrolling and animations and accept the battery trade-off. This is most noticeable when rapidly scrolling long pages, moving through launcher screens, dragging maps or playing a game that actually renders at a high frame rate.
A fixed high mode is useful when Adaptive changes rates in a way you can feel or when you want predictable behavior. It is less useful if your main apps are capped at 60 frames per second, the display is frequently thermally or power limited, or you cannot distinguish the modes in normal use.

Choose Standard or 60 Hz for battery priority
Standard is the conservative choice for travel, long workdays, weak-signal situations or any day when runtime matters more than animation fluidity. Samsung identifies Standard as 60 Hz and its best battery option. Google says the Pixel Smooth Display feature increases battery usage. Neither source provides a universal percentage or number of extra hours, so do not expect a fixed saving across phones.
If you do not notice a meaningful difference after switching between modes, Standard is a reasonable permanent setting. You can return to Adaptive or High later; changing the setting does not damage the panel.

Where to change the setting
Google Pixel phones
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Look for Smooth Display and turn it on or off. The exact choices depend on the Pixel model.
Google’s Pixel support documentation lists Smooth Display as a setting that increases battery usage and notes that Battery Saver disables it. If Smooth Display appears unavailable while Battery Saver is active, turn Battery Saver off before testing a higher rate. See Google’s Pixel display-settings guide for the current menu wording.
Samsung Galaxy phones
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Motion smoothness.
- Select Standard, High or Adaptive if your model offers those choices, then tap Apply.
Samsung does not expose the same options on every Galaxy device. Its support guide explains the available modes and model limitations at Samsung Support. On some devices, selecting WQHD+ resolution causes the phone to switch to Standard. Power saving mode also sets the display to Standard, so check both settings when a high-rate option seems to have stopped working.
Other Android phones
- Open Settings and use the search field.
- Search for refresh rate, screen refresh rate, motion smoothness, display frequency or smooth display.
- Open the matching display or battery result and select the available mode.
Manufacturers place this control in different menus and may call it Auto, Dynamic, Smart, High, 90 Hz, 120 Hz or Standard. If Settings search finds nothing, check the official support page for your exact model and software version. Do not assume a menu path from another brand applies to your phone.

Know your phone’s actual limits
The maximum printed in a specification sheet is a ceiling, not a constant operating rate. Android’s display policy, an app’s requested frame rate, the selected resolution, power-saving features, thermal conditions and the panel’s hardware all influence the rate selected at a given moment.
Google’s current Pixel help page gives these model examples:
| Pixel model | Rate capability listed by Google |
|---|---|
| Pixel 8a | Up to 120 Hz |
| Pixel 8 Pro | 1–120 Hz |
| Pixel 8 | 60–120 Hz |
| Pixel Fold | Up to 120 Hz |
| Pixel 7 | Up to 90 Hz |
| Pixel 7a | Up to 90 Hz |
| Pixel 7 Pro | Up to 120 Hz |
These are examples from Google’s cited Pixel page, not a complete list of current Pixel devices and not a claim that every Pixel app runs at the listed maximum. A phone with a 90 Hz panel cannot be made to run at 120 Hz by changing software, and a 120 Hz panel may still display a particular app at 60 Hz.
Why an app may not use the selected rate
App frame-rate requests
Android allows applications to express preferred frame rates. The system then considers those requests alongside available display modes and power or thermal conditions. A video app, game or animation may deliberately request 60 Hz even while the phone is set to Adaptive or High.
Android Developers documents adaptive refresh-rate behavior at Optimize frame rate with adaptive refresh rate. This is why a specification maximum should not be interpreted as a guarantee for every activity.

Resolution and power modes
Some Samsung phones switch to Standard when WQHD+ resolution is selected. Samsung’s Power saving mode also forces Standard. Pixel Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. These controls can override what you selected in the display menu.
Hardware and platform support
Android 15 introduced the adaptive refresh rate framework described by the Android Open Source Project as adapting the display rate to content frame rate using discrete VSync steps. The framework is documented at Android Open Source Project: Adaptive refresh rate. Android Developers says the adaptive functionality requires devices that implement the relevant hardware-abstraction-layer APIs and run Android 15 QPR1 or later. That is a platform capability requirement, not a promise that every phone running Android 15 has it.
The broader display-mode behavior, including how Android chooses among multiple supported rates, is described in Android’s multiple-refresh-rate documentation. Device makers can expose different rate steps, transitions and controls even when their software is based on the same Android release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a higher refresh rate drain the battery?
Generally, yes: keeping the display updating more often can consume more power than using a lower rate under otherwise comparable conditions. Google explicitly says Smooth Display increases battery usage, and Samsung presents Standard as the best battery option. The actual effect depends on brightness, cellular signal, screen-on time, processor load, app behavior, resolution and the phone’s display technology.

Testing the choice without guessing
- Use your normal apps for at least part of a typical day with Adaptive enabled.
- Pay attention to the activities where refresh rate is easiest to see: fast scrolling, launcher transitions, maps and supported games.
- Note whether the phone reaches the end of your day comfortably and whether motion feels smooth enough.
- If smoothness is still a priority, test High or the maximum fixed mode during similar activities.
- If runtime is the problem, switch to Standard for a battery-priority day and compare your own screen-on time and charging needs. Do not treat this as a laboratory measurement; other usage conditions must be similar for the comparison to mean anything.
This simple A/B approach is more useful than choosing by the largest number alone. A mode you cannot perceive in your real tasks provides little benefit, while a mode that makes scrolling noticeably better may be worth its additional power use.
Common problems and fixes
The high-rate option is missing
- Confirm that the phone’s panel supports more than 60 Hz; software cannot add a higher physical refresh rate.
- Turn off Battery Saver or Power saving mode, which can disable Smooth Display or force Standard.
- On a Galaxy phone, check whether WQHD+ resolution is selected; some models use Standard at that resolution.
- Install the latest system update offered for the model, then search Settings again.
- Verify the exact model number. Closely related models can have different panels and menus.
The phone keeps returning to Standard
Look for a battery automation, Power saving schedule, extreme-temperature warning or manufacturer performance mode. A system policy can lower the rate temporarily even when the display preference remains set to High. If the setting changes only while a particular app is open, that app may be requesting a different frame rate.
I selected 120 Hz but motion still looks like 60 Hz
- The app may be capped at 60 frames per second.
- Adaptive mode may have selected a lower rate for the current content.
- The phone may be in a power-saving or thermal state.
- Animations may be disabled or reduced in Accessibility or Developer settings.
- The screen may support 120 Hz only in certain resolutions or modes.
Test with fast system scrolling in Settings or a long web page, then check the app separately. This distinguishes a system-wide limitation from an app-specific one.

The phone feels less responsive after changing modes
Give the setting a few minutes of ordinary use and test at the same brightness and temperature. If the difference is still undesirable, return to Adaptive or Standard. Refresh rate does not change touch-screen quality by itself, and switching modes is reversible.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you want one setting that usually balances smoothness and runtime? Use Adaptive or Auto.
- Do you notice and value smoother scrolling or play games that support high frame rates? Use High or the maximum fixed option.
- Is extending battery runtime more important than animation fluidity? Use Standard or 60 Hz.
- Does your phone show several rates? Confirm the model’s actual minimum and maximum; do not infer them from another phone.
- Does the chosen mode appear ineffective? Check Battery Saver, Power saving, resolution, app frame-rate limits and temperature.
- Are you unsure? Start with Adaptive, then switch to Standard for a battery-priority day or High for a smoothness-priority day.
There is no universally correct refresh-rate setting. The right choice is the highest rate whose visible benefit justifies its power use on your particular phone and in the tasks you actually perform.
