In everyday PC specifications, “memory” usually means RAM. More precisely, RAM is one kind of computer memory: it provides temporary working space for data and instructions the computer is using. Persistent storage, such as an SSD or hard drive, keeps saved files when the computer is off.
What does “memory” mean on a computer?
“Memory” is a broad term for components that hold information a computer can use. In consumer PC descriptions, it commonly refers to RAM. But computer memory includes other kinds, such as ROM, so naming the specific type avoids confusion. Microsoft’s style guidance likewise recommends specifying the kind of memory being discussed.
Microsoft Support compares RAM to a device’s short-term memory. That is a useful analogy: RAM holds data and instructions for active tasks so the computer can access them while it works. It is an analogy, not a claim that RAM is the only kind of memory. Microsoft’s explanation of computer memory describes this role.

How is RAM different from storage?
RAM and persistent storage serve different purposes. RAM is the computer’s temporary work area; storage keeps applications and files for later use. IBM’s overview of data storage explains the distinction between active data access and keeping data persistently.

| Question | RAM | Persistent storage |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Holds data and instructions in active use | Keeps saved files and applications for later |
| What happens when power is removed? | Usually volatile: its contents are lost | Non-volatile: saved contents remain |
| Relative access | Faster than disks for reading and writing, according to Microsoft | Slower than RAM, but retains saved data |
| What capacity affects | How much active work can fit comfortably | How much saved data can fit |
Because RAM is temporary, it is not a substitute for storage and is not where saved files are kept permanently. The term “memory” alone can be ambiguous, but in a typical PC’s specifications it generally means RAM.
Does having more RAM make a computer faster?
More RAM can help a computer handle more simultaneous work without slowing down when active tasks need more working space. It does not guarantee a specific speed increase: performance also depends on the workload and other parts of the computer. Microsoft notes that RAM is faster than disks for reading and writing, but that comparison does not mean every task becomes faster just by adding RAM.

What should you check before upgrading RAM?
A RAM module must be supported by the specific computer. A DIMM is one physical category of memory module, not a guarantee that a particular module will fit. Before buying, check the computer’s documentation for:
- Supported memory type and module form factor
- Maximum capacity and supported speed
- Whether the memory can be replaced or upgraded
IBM’s explanation of DIMMs covers the module context, but compatibility depends on the computer model; these general definitions cannot establish which module fits an unspecified device.
