The right precision bit is the one that matches the screw’s drive shape and fills its recess completely. Identify the profile first—such as Phillips, JIS, Torx, pentalobe, tri-point, slotted or hex—then select the smallest size that seats fully without rocking. A near match can slip, round the recess and turn a routine repair into a difficult extraction.
Use the device’s service guide whenever one is available. Small electronics do not share one universal screw standard, even within a broad product category. A careful fit check, light hand pressure and a driver used only for turning protect both the fastener and the bit.
The two-part rule: shape first, size second
Every selection starts with two questions: what geometry is cut into the screw head, and what size fills that geometry? The order matters. A perfectly sized bit with the wrong profile is still unsafe, while the correct profile in the wrong size can damage the recess.

Look directly at the recess and identify its pattern. A Phillips cross, a JIS cross, a six-point Torx star, a three-lobed tri-point or tri-wing, a pentalobe, a straight slot and a hex socket are different drive families. Their names are not interchangeable labels for “small screwdrivers.” A bit that appears close may contact only a few edges and cam out under torque.

Then match the size
iFixit’s fit rule is straightforward: “Choose the bit size that fills the screw head entirely.” When seated, the bit should occupy the recess from wall to wall, enter fully and remain stable when you gently twist it by hand. Too small a bit leaves play and concentrates force on corners; too large a bit will not bottom out and can damage the opening.
How to identify the bit a repair needs
- Read the repair documentation. A device-specific service manual, teardown guide or manufacturer instruction may name the drive type and size. Record that information rather than inferring it from the product brand or from another model.
- Inspect the screw head under good light. Remove dust and use magnification if necessary. Count the visible points or lobes and distinguish a true star, three-lobed pattern, cross, slot or internal hex.
- Separate similar-looking cross heads. Phillips and JIS can look alike, especially at small sizes, but their geometry differs. iFixit notes that the most notable distinction appears at size 0 and below and cautions that the two are not always interchangeable.
- Choose a candidate in the same drive family. Do not substitute a flathead for a pentalobe, a Phillips for a Torx or a random cross bit for a JIS screw simply because it appears to enter the recess.
- Perform a gentle seat test. Insert the bit without turning. It should enter completely, fill the recess and stand without obvious rocking or looseness. If it stops high, wobbles or engages only part of the pattern, stop and reassess the profile and size.
- Turn with controlled pressure. Keep the shaft in line with the screw and press down only enough to maintain engagement. Increase force only after confirming that the bit is correct and fully seated.
Drive families found in electronics work
Repair references and precision-tool catalogs show that electronics kits contain several profiles rather than one universal bit. The table is a recognition guide, not a device-by-device compatibility chart.
| Drive family | How the recess is recognized | Selection caution |
|---|---|---|
| Phillips | Four-arm cross | Choose the size that completely fills the cross; do not assume it is interchangeable with JIS. |
| JIS | Japanese Industrial Standard cross geometry | It can resemble Phillips, but the profiles differ; check the service documentation or fit carefully. |
| Torx | Six-point star | Use the matching Torx size rather than a cross or hex bit. |
| Tri-point or tri-wing | Three-lobed or three-wing recess | Its three-lobed shape is distinct from both Phillips and slotted drives. |
| Pentalobe | Five-lobed star | Use a pentalobe bit of the specified size; a six-point Torx is a different profile. |
| Slotted (flathead) | Single straight slot | The blade must fit the slot without excessive side-to-side play. |
| Hex | Six-sided internal socket | Use the matching hex size; a Torx star is not a substitute. |
| Pozidriv | Cross pattern with additional reinforcing lines | It is a separate cross-drive family and should not be treated as a Phillips bit. |
iFixit’s driver guidance names Phillips, JIS, Pozidriv, Torx, tri-wing and flathead as separate examples. Wiha’s micro-bit assortments also list combinations of Phillips, Torx, pentalobe, slotted, hex and other profiles. Those lists show the range of bits that may be useful; they do not establish that any one set fits every phone, laptop, game controller or camera.
Getting size right without stripping the screw
Use the fill-and-seat test
With the bit inserted, look for full contact with the recess walls. A correct bit does not need to be forced down and does not tilt when you apply light fingertip pressure. For a cross head, the four arms should be filled rather than touched only at their tips. For a star or lobed drive, all available points should engage evenly.
Do not size by appearance alone
Two bits can look nearly identical in a tray while differing enough to slip. Tiny differences are especially significant in small electronics because the screw head is shallow and the available contact area is limited. If the first candidate does not seat cleanly, try another size in the same family instead of pressing harder.
Understand labels as tool sizes, not device guarantees
Bit markings identify the bit, not a universal rule for a product category. The evidence does not support saying that every phone uses one particular Phillips, Torx or pentalobe size. Treat a label such as a Phillips size 0 or a smaller size as a candidate to verify against the actual fastener and its service instructions.
Phillips versus JIS: why the distinction matters
Phillips and JIS both present a cross to the eye, which is why they are frequently confused. Their recess geometry and intended engagement differ. iFixit’s references specifically caution that the bits are not always interchangeable, with the difference most noticeable at size 0 and below.

If a cross bit feels loose, rises out of the recess or slips despite reasonable alignment, stop rather than increasing force. Check whether the fastener is JIS, select the documented profile and repeat the gentle seat test. A bit that happens to turn a screw once is not proof that it is the correct long-term choice; repeated slipping can deform the recess.
Choosing a precision-bit kit
A kit is an assortment, not a guarantee of compatibility. Select one by comparing its actual contents with the screws you expect to encounter.
Check the drive families
Read the contents list instead of relying on a large bit count. iFixit EDU describes a 64-bit kit containing Phillips, Torx, flathead and additional types. Wiha’s catalog documents micro-bit assortments that include Phillips, Torx, pentalobe, slotted, hex and other profiles. A smaller set with the needed family is more useful than a larger set missing the required profile.
Check the small sizes
Within a family, confirm that the kit includes the exact small sizes named by your repair guide. “Phillips included” or “Torx included” is not enough information to establish fit. Compare the printed size list with the fastener specifications before opening the device.

Check the handle and interface
Interchangeable precision systems use a particular bit interface. If you plan to buy replacements, verify that the replacement bit has the correct drive size and fits your handle. iFixit identifies replacement 4 mm precision bits for named compatible toolkits; compatibility depends on the handle system, not merely on the bit’s visible profile.
Evaluate the handle and case for your work
A comfortable, controllable handle helps you keep the shaft aligned and regulate pressure. A case that keeps tiny bits organized reduces the chance of mixing sizes. Storage features are conveniences, not evidence that the bits fit a particular device. The reviewed sources do not establish independent durability rankings among kits, so do not infer that a higher bit count or a catalog description proves superior wear resistance.
Compare a single replacement bit with a kit
Choose a single replacement when a service guide identifies one drive family and size, you already own a compatible handle and the existing bit is worn or lost. Buying only the needed profile avoids searching through an assortment, but it leaves no alternate size if the documentation is incomplete or another fastener appears inside the device.

An assortment is more practical when you work on several product types, encounter unknown fasteners or want adjacent sizes for a documented family. Compare the printed inventory line by line: profile names, individual sizes, shaft or interface specification and replacement availability. The number printed on the package is only a count. It does not show whether the set contains the pentalobe, JIS, tri-point or other less-common profile in your job.

Catalog descriptions can confirm what a manufacturer places in a set, but they are not independent durability tests. Treat construction claims, storage layouts and bit counts as purchasing details rather than proof that one brand will outlast another. The deciding evidence for a particular repair remains a clean, full seat in the actual screw.
Read markings and keep an inventory
Markings on a bit normally identify its drive family and size. They describe the tool, not the device. Keep the bit in the labeled slot after testing it so similar-looking sizes do not become mixed. If you use a replacement, note both the working-end designation and the handle interface; a bit can have the correct Torx, Phillips or pentalobe tip and still fail to lock into an incompatible holder.
Before opening a device, write down the profile and size specified by the guide and compare it with the kit’s contents. During the job, keep removed fasteners separated by location and return the bit to storage after each step. This simple record prevents a small screw from being paired with the wrong driver during reassembly and makes it easier to identify a missing or damaged tool.
Perform a deliberate fit check on every new screw
Do not assume that screws in one enclosure all share one drive. Test the selected bit on the first fastener without turning. Look for complete insertion, even contact and no rocking. On a cross drive, confirm that each arm is engaged; on a star or lobed drive, check that each point is contacting rather than just one or two edges. If a screw is recessed deeply, keep the shaft straight as you inspect the engagement instead of levering the handle sideways.
Recommended Free Tools
When the bit passes the test, begin with slow hand rotation. If resistance appears immediately, stop and repeat the identification process. Resistance can indicate a wrong profile, wrong size, contamination in the recess or a screw that is already damaged. More downward force can hide the problem briefly while removing material from the recess, so diagnosis is safer than escalation.
Safe technique for removing and installing small screws
- Power down and prepare the workspace. Follow the device’s repair instructions for shutdown, unplugging and any battery precautions. Keep the work area clean so debris cannot prevent full seating.
- Place the driver squarely. Hold the shaft perpendicular to the screw head unless the service procedure specifies another angle. A tilted shaft reduces contact and encourages cam-out.
- Apply axial pressure, not excessive torque. Press straight down enough to keep the bit engaged, then turn slowly by hand. If the screw resists, stop and verify the profile, size and direction instead of escalating force immediately.
- Keep track of screws and bits. Return each bit to its labeled position and record where removed fasteners came from. Mixing similar screws can create fit problems during reassembly.
- Inspect after removal. Check the recess and bit for rounding, bent edges or contamination. Replace a damaged bit before the next screw rather than carrying the problem forward.
What not to do with a precision screwdriver
- Do not pry or chisel with it. iFixit cautions that using a screwdriver as a pry tool can bend, break or deform the tip. A damaged tip is more likely to slip in the next screw.
- Do not force a near match. A flathead in a cross or a Torx in another star-like profile can remove material from the recess and make later work harder.
- Do not continue after repeated slipping. Repeated cam-out is a diagnostic signal. Recheck the drive family, size, alignment and condition of the fastener.
- Do not assume magnetism is mandatory. The reviewed guidance discusses organization and storage but does not establish magnetized bits as universally appropriate for every component or repair. Treat magnetism as an optional tool feature and follow the device’s handling precautions.
Troubleshooting a bit that will not work
The bit will not enter fully
Remove the bit and inspect the recess for debris, paint or a different drive pattern. Try another size in the same family only after confirming the profile. A bit that stops high cannot transmit force safely.

The bit rocks or slips
Use the next appropriate size, verify that the screw is not JIS when you selected Phillips, and realign the driver. If the recess is already damaged, stop ordinary removal attempts and follow a device-specific extraction procedure rather than worsening the damage.
The screw turns but the driver lifts out
Maintain straight downward pressure and slow the rotation. If the bit still lifts, its geometry or size may be wrong, or the recess may be worn. Replace the bit if its tip is rounded or deformed.
A replacement bit does not fit the handle
Confirm the handle’s interface and the replacement’s shaft specification. A matching drive profile describes the working end only; it does not guarantee mechanical compatibility with every interchangeable handle.
The screw head is already damaged
Do not keep cycling through near matches. Set aside the damaged fastener, preserve the surrounding components and use the device-specific extraction method recommended for that repair. Once the screw is removed, replace any bit that shows rounding or deformation before working on another fastener.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision checklist
- Have you consulted the device-specific guide?
- Can you name the drive family rather than just calling it a “small screw”?
- Does the selected bit fill the recess completely?
- Does it enter fully without rocking?
- Have you distinguished Phillips from JIS where a cross head is involved?
- Does your kit contain the required family and exact size?
- Will a replacement bit fit your handle interface?
- Is the bit straight, clean and undamaged?
- Are you using the screwdriver only to turn, never to pry or chisel?
When a kit is better than a single bit
Buy or keep an assortment when your work spans several drive families, when you service devices with unknown fasteners or when you need backup sizes around a documented specification. A single replacement bit is sensible when the device guide identifies one profile and size and you already own a compatible handle. In either case, judge the choice by verified fit, not by the number of pieces in the package.
Final selection workflow
Start with the screw and its documentation, not with the kit. Identify the geometry, select the corresponding family, and compare sizes until one bit fills the recess and seats fully. Turn slowly with a straight, controlled grip. If the bit slips, stop and diagnose the mismatch before the screw or tool is damaged. This workflow addresses the two failures that matter most in small-electronics repair: choosing the wrong profile and forcing the wrong size.

Are Phillips and JIS bits interchangeable?
Not reliably. They can look alike, especially at size 0 and below, but their geometries differ. If a cross bit feels loose or slips, stop and verify whether the screw is JIS.
How can I tell whether a bit is the right size?
Insert it without turning. The bit should enter fully, fill the recess from wall to wall and remain stable under light fingertip pressure. A gap, wobble or high seating indicates a mismatch.
Is a 64-bit precision kit guaranteed to fit my device?
No. A 64-bit kit is an assortment specification, not a universal compatibility claim. Compare its listed drive families and exact sizes with your device’s fasteners before starting work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I buy a kit or one replacement bit?
Buy one replacement when the required profile and size are documented and your handle is compatible. Choose an assortment when you work on several devices, encounter unknown fasteners or need alternate sizes.
Do magnetic bits have to be used for small-electronics repair?
No universal requirement is established. Magnetism can be a convenience, but follow the device’s handling precautions and judge the bit primarily by profile, size and secure seating.
Can I use a flathead bit if the cross or star bit is missing?
Do not use a close-enough substitute. A flathead, Phillips, Torx, pentalobe and other profiles contact screws differently; forcing the wrong one can deform the recess and make removal harder.
What should I do if a replacement bit will not fit my handle?
Check the handle’s interface and the replacement’s shaft specification. A matching working-end profile does not guarantee mechanical compatibility with every interchangeable handle.
The Bottom Line
Identify the drive shape, match the exact size, and confirm a full, stable seat before turning. Stop at the first sign of slipping, verify the profile and handle interface, and never use a precision screwdriver as a pry tool.
