Choose a power bank by counting the top-ups you need between outlets, then check its usable energy, output, size and travel rating. For most phone-only days, a 10,000 mAh USB-C power bank is the practical starting point. Choose 20,000 mAh when you need several recharges or power for more than one device, accepting extra bulk. The printed mAh figure is not the amount your phone receives: voltage conversion and charging losses reduce delivered energy.
Start with the gap between outlets
Capacity is a planning decision, not a contest to find the largest number. First identify the longest period in which you may be away from a wall outlet. Then decide what must remain charged during that period.
- Emergency reserve: You only need enough energy to make a call, navigate, message or finish a work session.
- One full recovery: Your phone may be nearly empty before you reach an outlet and you want a substantial recharge.
- Several phone recharges: You spend a full day or more away from mains power.
- Multiple devices: A phone is joined by earbuds, a tablet, a camera, a hotspot or another USB device.
The right capacity is the smallest one that covers that routine without becoming an unwanted second brick in your bag. If your pattern changes—such as a weekly day trip, festival or field assignment—buy for the longest regular gap rather than for an occasional worst case.
What the mAh number actually tells you
Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe charge stored by the battery cells inside the bank at their rated cell voltage. Your phone charges through a regulated USB output at a different voltage. The bank must convert between those voltages, and the conversion electronics, cable and phone charging circuit consume some energy. Consequently, a bank labeled 10,000 mAh cannot deliver 10,000 mAh directly to a phone battery.

Rated capacity versus delivered capacity
Anker Support estimates that approximately 60–70% of a power bank’s rated capacity reaches connected devices after the energy used to generate the output charge is accounted for. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a universal efficiency test for every model, cable or charging condition. Heat, simultaneous charging, output power and the phone’s charging behavior can all change the result.
Use the mAh marking to compare banks in the same product category, but treat any predicted charge count as an estimate. A bank’s watt-hour (Wh) marking is more useful when comparing energy across different voltages and when checking airline rules.
Why a phone may stop before its battery reaches 100%
A phone does not necessarily accept every joule available from a bank. Charging slows near the top of the battery, the phone may be running its screen, radios or processor during the session, and the phone’s own charging circuitry has losses. A power bank can therefore feel less effective when you are using the phone heavily while it is plugged in. For the most useful emergency reserve, charge the phone while it is idle or in a low-power mode when practical.

How many phone charges can you expect?
Anker’s 2026 comparison guidance gives these broad manufacturer estimates:
| Power-bank rating | Typical smartphone charges | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 mAh | About 1–2 | Suitable for an emergency top-up or roughly one substantial recharge for many phones; the exact result depends on the phone and the charger’s output. |
| 20,000 mAh | About 3–4 | More suitable for several recharges or more than one device, with greater size and weight. |
These are approximate claims from the manufacturer, not guaranteed outcomes. They should not be read as a promise that every 10,000 mAh bank will refill every phone twice, or that every 20,000 mAh bank will provide four complete cycles.
A transparent way to estimate your own result
If both the bank and phone specifications provide energy in watt-hours, compare those figures first. Otherwise, use this process:
- Convert the bank’s marked capacity from mAh to Ah by dividing by 1,000.
- Multiply amp-hours by the voltage stated for that capacity to obtain watt-hours:
Wh = V × Ah. - Allow for conversion losses. Anker’s support estimate of 60–70% delivered capacity can serve as a manufacturer-provided planning range, not a guarantee.
- Divide the estimated delivered energy by the phone’s battery energy, if the phone publishes it in Wh. If it publishes only mAh, remember that the phone’s voltage may differ from the bank cell voltage, so a direct mAh division is only a rough shortcut.
For an illustration only, a label that states 10,000 mAh at 3.7 V represents 37 Wh before losses (10,000 ÷ 1,000 × 3.7). Applying a 60–70% planning range gives roughly 22–26 Wh delivered. Your phone’s actual result depends on its battery voltage, charge state, operating load and the bank’s electronics; the arithmetic is not a test of a particular model.

Choosing between 10,000 mAh and 20,000 mAh
Choose 10,000 mAh for everyday portability
A 10,000 mAh USB-C power bank is the sensible default when you carry one phone and usually return to an outlet each day. It is aimed at a top-up during a commute, a long appointment, travel between connections or a day when navigation and camera use drain the phone faster than usual. Anker characterizes this class as typically providing about one to two smartphone charges, subject to the variables above.
Its main advantage is not a guaranteed number of cycles; it is the balance between reserve energy and something you are willing to carry routinely. Check the model’s dimensions and weight rather than assuming every 10,000 mAh product feels the same.
Choose 20,000 mAh for long gaps or several devices
A 20,000 mAh USB-C power bank makes more sense when you may be away from outlets for a full day or longer, cannot recharge the bank during the day, or expect to share energy with another device. Anker’s estimate is about three to four smartphone charges, again depending on the phone and output conditions.
The trade-off is physical: doubling the nominal capacity generally means a bulkier, heavier bank. A capacity that stays at home because it is inconvenient is less useful than a smaller bank you actually carry. Look at the published weight, thickness and port arrangement before deciding that the extra reserve is worth it.

If you need only a short emergency boost, a smaller bank may be easier to carry, but no universal charge count for smaller capacities is published. Conversely, if you are planning to run laptops or other high-demand equipment, do not choose by mAh alone: verify the bank’s output power, USB-C Power Delivery support, connector requirements and the device maker’s charging specification. The figures in this guide are centered on phones and ordinary USB devices, not a guarantee for every computer.
Match capacity to real routines
| Routine | Starting choice | Reasoning and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Daily commute, one phone, outlets at work and home | 10,000 mAh | Provides a practical reserve without carrying unnecessary stored energy. Confirm that the output connector matches your phone. |
| Long day of navigation, photos, streaming or hotspot use | 10,000 mAh or 20,000 mAh | Choose 10,000 mAh if you can reach an outlet later; choose 20,000 mAh if the entire day may pass without one. |
| Weekend travel with uncertain access to outlets | 20,000 mAh | The higher-capacity class offers more estimated recharges, but verify dimensions, weight and airline limits. |
| Phone plus earbuds or another small USB device | 10,000 mAh for occasional use; 20,000 mAh for repeated use | Count the other device’s charging sessions, not just the phone’s. Simultaneous charging can alter the practical result. |
| Two phones or a phone shared with another person | 20,000 mAh | More stored energy reduces the chance that the reserve is exhausted after the first phone. Check that the bank can supply the required output to both ports. |
These are decision aids, not laboratory results. Actual charge counts vary with each phone, the bank’s output and how the devices are used while charging.
Check output and compatibility before capacity
Capacity answers “how long can the bank keep supplying energy?” Output answers “can it supply my device correctly and quickly?” A large bank with the wrong port or insufficient output is a poor purchase.

Connector and port
- Confirm that the bank has a USB-C output if your phone uses USB-C. Some banks have USB-C only for recharging the bank, while others support output as well; read the port labels and specifications.
- Use a cable rated for the charging mode you intend to use. A mismatched or damaged cable can reduce speed or stop charging.
- If you carry several devices, count the number of output ports and check whether using them together changes the available output.
Power and charging protocols
Read the bank’s output wattage and supported charging protocols, then compare them with the phone’s requirements. Higher wattage does not force a phone to take more power; the phone negotiates what it can accept. It can, however, determine whether a fast-charge mode is available. No neutral tests of named models are provided, so rely on the manufacturer’s stated specifications rather than an assumed performance level.
Recharge time for the bank itself
A larger capacity can require more time to refill. Check the bank’s input rating and whether its USB-C port supports the input power needed for a convenient overnight or between-trips recharge. If you regularly leave home with a partly charged bank, a fast input specification may matter more than adding capacity.
Understand watt-hours for flights
For U.S. air travel, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says spare lithium-ion batteries, including power banks, must be carried in cabin baggage and cannot be checked. The FAA uses watt-hours rather than mAh for its thresholds:
| Battery rating | FAA passenger guidance |
|---|---|
| 0–100 Wh | Generally allowed in carry-on baggage. |
| 101–160 Wh | Requires airline approval and is limited to two spare batteries per person. |
| Above 160 Wh | Forbidden under the FAA passenger guidance for spare lithium-ion batteries. |
Airlines may impose stricter limits, and rules outside the United States can differ. Check the current policy of every carrier on your itinerary before departure. Keep the bank accessible in your carry-on, protect its terminals from short circuits, and follow any packaging or inspection instructions from the airline.
Convert mAh to Wh when the label does not show Wh
The FAA’s calculation is Wh = V × Ah. Convert mAh to Ah first by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by the voltage associated with the battery rating. For example, if a power bank’s label states 20,000 mAh and 3.7 V, the arithmetic is 20,000 ÷ 1,000 × 3.7 = 74 Wh. That example is a calculation from the stated figures, not a claim that every bank uses that voltage. The clearest option is to use the Wh value printed on the bank or its documentation.

Stored energy has a carrying cost. Compare dimensions and weight alongside mAh, especially if the bank will live in a pocket, small sling or laptop sleeve. A 20,000 mAh bank may reduce charging anxiety on a trip but be inconvenient for daily commuting. A 10,000 mAh bank may be more comfortable to carry and still cover an ordinary day.
Consider where the bank will sit while charging. A short cable, a pass-through-friendly layout or a compact shape can make a smaller capacity more usable in practice. Do not assume that a slim appearance means lower energy or that two banks with the same mAh will have identical dimensions; inspect the specifications for the exact model.

A buying checklist
- Write down your longest outlet-free interval. Include travel days and places where sockets may be occupied.
- Count devices. List every device you expect to charge and how often, including accessories.
- Select a capacity class. Start at 10,000 mAh for a portable phone-only reserve; move to 20,000 mAh for several estimated recharges or multiple devices.
- Read the Wh marking. Record it for air-travel planning and use it when comparing products with different voltage specifications.
- Verify USB-C output. Make sure the port is an output port, not merely an input for recharging the bank.
- Compare output power. Check the phone’s charging requirement and whether the bank supports the desired fast-charge protocol.
- Check simultaneous output. If you will charge two devices, find out how the bank allocates power across ports.
- Check size and weight. Decide whether the reserve will be carried every day or only packed for trips.
- Check travel rules. Keep the bank in cabin baggage and confirm the airline’s current policy, even when the rating appears below 100 Wh.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Dividing mAh numbers directly
Dividing a 10,000 mAh bank by a phone’s battery mAh suggests a neat answer but ignores voltage conversion and losses. Use the result only as a rough intuition, not a promise. The manufacturer’s 60–70% delivered-capacity estimate explains why the actual count is lower.
Buying the biggest bank without checking the label
A high mAh figure does not guarantee the ports, wattage or protocols your phone needs. Confirm USB-C output and the power specification before paying for additional stored energy.
Ignoring use while charging
Navigation, camera recording, gaming and hotspot operation consume energy during the charge. If the phone is drawing power nearly as quickly as the bank supplies it, the battery percentage may rise slowly or appear to stall. Reduce demanding activity when you need the fastest recovery.
Checking mAh but not Wh before flying
Airline limits are expressed in watt-hours. Find the printed Wh value or calculate it from the labeled voltage and amp-hours. Then check the carrier’s rules; the FAA thresholds are a U.S. baseline, not a worldwide guarantee.
Assuming a charge count is universal
The 1–2 and 3–4 figures are Anker’s approximate manufacturer estimates. Phone battery size, output, cable, temperature, simultaneous charging and phone usage can all change the result. Treat them as planning ranges.
The practical decision
Choose a 10,000 mAh USB-C power bank when your normal need is one phone, a daily top-up and easy portability. Choose 20,000 mAh when you routinely face long periods without an outlet, need several estimated recharges or charge multiple devices. In either case, verify the Wh rating, USB-C output, wattage, dimensions and airline policy. Capacity is useful only when the bank is compatible, legal to carry and convenient enough to bring with you.
