Start with Filmmaker Mode for movies and scripted shows when preserving the source presentation matters most. Choose Movie for Samsung’s dark-room movie preset, Standard for everyday viewing, Dynamic when a bright room makes the image hard to see, Eco when reducing power use is the priority, and Game Mode for console play. There is no universally best mode: the right choice depends on the content, room light, and whether you prefer accuracy, brightness, energy saving, or gaming responsiveness.
Samsung changes menu labels and available features by model and year. Use the procedure below as a guide, then confirm the exact wording in your TV’s manual if your screen differs.
Picture modes at a glance
Picture Mode is a starting preset that changes the television’s image processing and basic picture characteristics. It is not a permanent calibration and it does not make every input identical. You can select a different mode for a game console, streaming app, broadcast channel, or HDMI device, depending on the options your model exposes.

What each mode is designed to do
Filmmaker Mode: the accuracy-first starting point
Filmmaker Mode is intended for viewers who want a television to avoid altering a film or show’s presentation. The UHD Alliance says the mode disables post-processing, including motion smoothing, and preserves the correct aspect ratios, colors, and frame rates so the content appears as the filmmaker intended. Samsung summarizes the purpose as watching a movie or television show “without any changes to the picture settings.”

That does not mean every set will look identical in Filmmaker Mode. The panel, room, source quality, software version, and the program itself still affect the result. It also does not promise a professional calibration. It is a sensible first choice when you would rather see the original motion and composition than a brighter or more aggressively processed image.
Samsung explicitly notes that Filmmaker Mode may appear darker than other modes. In a dark room, that can be an advantage because highlights are less likely to dominate your eyes. In daylight, the same presentation may be difficult to see. If visibility is the problem, compare the result with Dynamic rather than assuming that a hidden brightness number will solve every model equally; no single OLED brightness adjustment applies universally.
Movie: Samsung’s dark-room movie preset
Movie is the practical alternative when you watch films or television in a dim room but prefer Samsung’s own movie-oriented preset. It is not described as a replacement for Filmmaker Mode’s source-preservation goals. Instead, it gives you a dark-room starting point within Samsung’s regular picture-mode system.

Choose Movie when Filmmaker Mode’s presentation does not suit your room or taste, or when your model provides picture controls in Movie that you want to adjust. Make changes gradually and judge them with the type of program you actually watch. A setting that looks comfortable on a bright animation may be distracting in a shadowy drama.
Standard: the broad everyday default
Standard is Samsung’s general-purpose default for most viewing environments. It is the useful starting point for mixed daytime and evening use, news, broadcast television, casual streaming, and content for which strict cinematic accuracy is not your main concern.
Standard is also a good troubleshooting baseline. If a custom mode looks unexpectedly dim, oversaturated, or heavily processed, switch temporarily to Standard to determine whether the issue is mode-specific or caused by the source, cable, app, or television settings. Once you understand the difference, return to the mode that better matches your priority.

Dynamic: visibility in a bright room
Dynamic is designed to look brighter and clearer in bright viewing environments. It can make daytime viewing easier when windows or strong lamps wash out a more restrained preset. Select it for visibility, not because the name implies greater accuracy.

Dynamic can be a useful room-dependent choice: one HDMI input might use Filmmaker Mode at night while another uses Dynamic during the day. Samsung does not provide one brightness value that defines Dynamic across all OLED models, so use your eyes in the actual room and avoid copying numerical settings from a different television.
Eco: when lower energy use comes first
Eco emphasizes energy saving. Samsung describes it as reducing power consumption or optimizing energy use, but the available documentation does not quantify a single saving percentage for every OLED model. Choose it when reducing consumption matters more than obtaining the same visual impact as Standard, Movie, or Dynamic.
If Eco makes the picture too dim, select another mode or inspect the television’s energy-related options. Do not assume that changing one picture control produces the same power behavior on every model; Samsung’s menus and implementation vary by year and set.
Game Mode: speed for console play
Game Mode is a separate gaming-oriented option. Samsung says it optimizes speed and may slightly reduce graphics quality. That trade-off is intentional: a console player may prefer quicker on-screen response over the processing used for a more elaborate picture.

Use Game Mode on the HDMI input connected to your console when responsiveness matters. It is not the best default for films, because its processing priorities are different. Availability, supported features, and the exact settings shown can depend on the TV model, input signal, and software.

How to change Picture Mode
Samsung’s support instructions use this general path:
- Press the Home button on the remote and open Settings or All Settings.
- Select Picture.
- Open Picture Mode.
- Choose Filmmaker, Movie, Standard, Dynamic, Eco, Game Mode, or another option your model lists.
- Play representative content and check the result in the room where you normally watch.
Samsung warns that screens, labels, and available options differ by model and year. If you do not see the path exactly as written, open the model-specific manual rather than treating a missing label as a fault. A current model may include Filmmaker Mode while an older set may use different names or expose fewer choices.
Choose by room, content, and priority
Watching a film at night
Begin with Filmmaker Mode. It is the clearest match for preserving the movie’s frame rate, aspect ratio, colors, and intended processing. If you prefer Samsung’s dark-room preset or find Filmmaker Mode unsuitable, try Movie. Keep the same scene on screen while switching so that your comparison is meaningful.
Watching television in daylight
Start with Standard for a balanced everyday presentation. If glare or strong ambient light makes details difficult to see, compare Dynamic. The decision is about visibility in your room; Dynamic’s extra brightness should not be interpreted as evidence that it is more accurate.
Mixed family viewing
Standard is the simplest shared default because Samsung positions it for most environments. Viewers who care about film presentation can switch to Filmmaker Mode for movie nights without changing the television permanently for everyone else.
Playing a console game
Select Game Mode on the console’s input. Check the picture after enabling it because Samsung notes that the speed-oriented mode may slightly reduce graphics quality. For films watched through the same console, switch back to a movie-oriented mode if your television allows separate input settings.

Reducing energy use
Choose Eco when energy saving is the deciding factor. If the resulting picture is too dark for your room, weigh that practical limitation against your energy goal and select a different mode. There is no universal savings number to use as a threshold for every Samsung OLED.
Should you use Intelligent Mode?
Use Intelligent Mode only when your television supports it and you want adaptive behavior rather than a fixed picture preset. Samsung says Intelligent Mode on select OLED models can use the surroundings, the content, and usage patterns to tune settings. The capabilities and menu presentation differ by model year.
Intelligent Mode is therefore a preference choice, not a guaranteed upgrade. It can suit a household whose lighting and viewing habits change frequently. A viewer who wants the same predictable presentation every time may prefer to leave adaptive features off and select Filmmaker, Movie, Standard, Dynamic, Eco, or Game Mode manually. Check the exact options shown on your set before enabling it.

After choosing a mode, Samsung provides additional controls under Expert Settings. Common controls include brightness, contrast, sharpness, color, and color tone. These controls are useful for personal adjustment, but the correct value depends on the panel, signal format, room, software, and your visual preference. The available documentation does not establish universally correct numbers for every Samsung OLED.
Make one change at a time and keep a note of the original value. Use familiar scenes containing skin tones, fine text, shadow detail, and bright highlights. If the result becomes less comfortable or hides detail, restore the previous value instead of stacking more changes. A calibration disc is an optional route for a separate calibration project; it is not required to choose a picture mode.

Samsung exposes motion options under Picture Clarity on supported models. The controls can include Auto Motion Plus, Blur Reduction, Judder Reduction, and LED Clear Motion. Filmmaker Mode’s design goal is to disable post-processing such as motion smoothing.

If films look unnaturally fluid, inspect Picture Clarity first. Lower or disable motion processing if your model gives you that choice, then judge a real movie scene. Samsung does not state that every OLED model behaves identically, so use the labels and effects on your own set rather than assuming that one control value transfers from another year.
Troubleshooting common complaints
“Filmmaker Mode is too dark.”
Samsung acknowledges that Filmmaker Mode may look darker. First check the room: daylight and direct lamps can make a restrained mode appear unusable. Compare Movie in a dark room or Dynamic in a bright room. Do not expect one brightness number to correct every OLED, and do not conclude that the mode is defective solely because it is less bright than Dynamic.
“The menu does not match these instructions.”
Samsung says menus and features vary by model and year. Confirm that you opened Settings or All Settings, then Picture, and look for Picture Mode or an equivalent label. If the option is absent, consult the manual for the exact model and software generation.
“The picture looks too smooth.”
Open Picture Clarity and check Auto Motion Plus, Blur Reduction, Judder Reduction, and LED Clear Motion where available. Filmmaker Mode is designed to avoid motion-smoothing post-processing, so it is a useful comparison. Because implementations differ, change the setting on the affected input and evaluate the same scene again.
“Game Mode looks less detailed.”
Samsung says Game Mode prioritizes speed and may slightly reduce graphics quality. Decide whether responsiveness or image processing matters more for the game you are playing. Use a movie-oriented mode for non-gaming content when that produces the presentation you prefer.
“I cannot find Intelligent Mode.”
Intelligent Mode is limited to select models and its capabilities vary by year. If it is not listed, your television may not support it or may place the controls elsewhere. You can still choose a fixed mode manually.
A practical selection routine
- Identify the content: film or scripted show, everyday television, bright-room viewing, energy-saving use, or console gaming.
- Choose the corresponding starting preset: Filmmaker, Movie, Standard, Dynamic, Eco, or Game Mode.
- Evaluate it in the actual room and at the time of day when you watch.
- If the image is too dark, compare the next mode that addresses your room rather than copying settings from another model.
- Check Picture Clarity if motion looks artificial.
- Use Expert Settings only for deliberate, one-at-a-time personal adjustments, keeping the original values available for rollback.
- Recheck the input after changing devices or apps; a console, streaming app, and broadcast source may not expose identical options.
What the choice ultimately means
Picture Mode is a set of priorities. Filmmaker Mode favors preserving the source, Movie targets dark-room films, Standard favors broad everyday use, Dynamic favors visibility in bright surroundings, Eco favors energy saving, and Game Mode favors gaming speed. Intelligent Mode adds adaptive behavior on supported sets. Select the priority that matches the moment, then make only the small, model-specific adjustments you can evaluate confidently.
