The right moving truck is the smallest vehicle that safely fits your measured belongings, stays within its stated load limit, and works for your route, driver, and budget. Room-count labels are only a starting point. Measure large items and boxes, compare those measurements with the truck’s interior dimensions and cargo volume, then compare complete quotes for identical dates and mileage.

Before booking, verify pickup and drop-off locations, rental duration, fuel expectations, equipment, protection options, age and license rules, and whether the vehicle is available for your move. A low advertised base rate can be misleading when the truck is too small, the mileage allowance is insufficient, or required equipment is extra.

What “the right truck” actually means

Truck size is only one part of the decision. A suitable rental must satisfy five tests at the same time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Physical fit: furniture, appliances, boxes, and protective materials fit through the cargo door and inside the cargo body.
  • Weight fit: the loaded truck remains below the provider’s stated maximum load.
  • Route fit: the rental period, mileage terms, pickup location, and drop-off location match your move.
  • Driver fit: the renter and any additional drivers meet the provider’s age, license, and verification rules.
  • Handling fit: the driver can safely maneuver, park, load, unload, and—if necessary—back the vehicle.

U-Haul’s published fleet page pairs trucks with approximate home sizes, but it also provides the dimensions, volume, and maximum load that let you check the recommendation against your actual inventory. Those specifications apply to the listed U-Haul vehicles, not to every truck with a similar length or marketing label. See the U-Haul truck specifications for the current vehicle details.

Measure your move before looking at room-count labels

Create a complete inventory

Walk through every room and record each piece that will travel. Include items people commonly forget when estimating a move: garage tools, shelving, patio furniture, bicycles, seasonal storage, lamps, rugs, plants, and boxes already stored in closets or an attic. Mark anything that will be sold, donated, discarded, or moved in a personal vehicle.

Separate the inventory into large, awkward, fragile, and ordinary items. A tall wardrobe, sectional sofa, exercise machine, safe, or refrigerator can determine the truck size even when the total number of boxes seems modest. Note which pieces can be disassembled and which cannot; a table that fits only after its legs are removed should be measured in both configurations.

Measure the dimensions that matter

For each large item, record length, width, height, and approximate weight if known. Measure the route through the house as well: doorways, stair turns, elevators, gates, and the distance to the truck. A couch that fits inside the cargo body may still be impossible to remove from the house without a different orientation or partial disassembly.

Enterprise Truck Rental explicitly recommends measuring cargo before reservation. Its renter guidance is available in the truck rental guide. Use the same discipline for boxes: estimate how many boxes you have and group them by size rather than assuming every box occupies the same amount of space.

Estimate volume without pretending it is exact

For a rectangular item, multiply length by width by height to estimate cubic volume. Add the estimates for boxes and furniture, then compare the total with the truck’s published cargo volume. This is a screening calculation, not a guarantee: furniture has irregular shapes, clearance is needed around doorways and wheel wells, and empty spaces between items cannot always be filled efficiently.

Make a simple loading sketch. Put the longest items along the cargo walls, reserve a protected area for fragile pieces, and identify where mattresses, mirrors, and large pictures can stand safely. If your plan leaves no room for blankets, pads, straps, or a hand truck, the nominal volume is not the usable volume for your move.

Account for stackability and clearance

Two loads with the same calculated volume can require different trucks. Uniform boxes stack efficiently; curved furniture, plant pots, bicycles, and irregular shelves do not. Height matters when a wardrobe or refrigerator must remain upright. Width matters when a sofa or appliance cannot be turned on its side. Length matters when several long pieces must lie or stand in the same direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a margin rather than planning to fill every cubic inch. The exact margin depends on your furniture mix, packing skill, and how much protective material you use. If the load is close to the truck’s limits on paper, move up one size or remove items before booking; discovering a shortage at pickup is more expensive and disruptive than reserving adequate space.

Use actual truck specifications, not generic “one-bedroom” promises

The following U-Haul figures are a concrete reference from its published truck page. They are not universal standards for all rental companies, and fleet details can vary by location and vehicle. Recheck the current listing attached to your reservation.

U-Haul truck category Interior dimensions (L × W × H) Cargo volume Stated maximum load U-Haul home-size guidance
10-foot truck 9 ft 11 in × 6 ft 3 in × 6 ft 1 in 402 cu. ft. 2,850 lb Studio or one-bedroom apartment
15-foot truck 15 ft × 7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 2 in 764 cu. ft. 6,385 lb One- to two-bedroom home or apartment
20-foot truck 19 ft 6 in × 7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 2 in 1,016 cu. ft. 5,700 lb Two- to three-bedroom home or apartment
26-foot truck 26 ft 2 in × 8 ft 2 in × 8 ft 3 in 1,682 cu. ft. 12,859 lb Three- to four-bedroom home

The table illustrates why a room count cannot replace measurement. A 20-foot truck has more listed volume than a 15-foot truck, yet its stated maximum load is lower in this particular U-Haul listing. Always check both volume and weight for the exact vehicle; do not infer a load limit from truck length or from another company’s similarly named model.

How to interpret the size categories

Use the provider’s home-size suggestion as your first candidate, then test it against your inventory:

  • 10-foot class: a reasonable starting point for a compact studio or one-bedroom move when the inventory is light and the largest pieces fit its 9-foot-11-inch cargo length and 6-foot-1-inch interior height.
  • 15-foot class: consider it when a one-bedroom load includes substantial furniture or when a compact truck leaves little stacking flexibility.
  • 20-foot class: a candidate for a larger two- or three-bedroom inventory, subject to the actual dimensions and the listed 5,700-pound maximum load.
  • 26-foot class: the largest example in this table, intended by U-Haul’s guidance for a three- to four-bedroom home; confirm that the driver, parking area, and access roads can accommodate it.

These are starting points, not promises that every household in a particular bedroom category will fit. A sparsely furnished three-bedroom home may need less space than a densely furnished one-bedroom home with workshop equipment and oversized furniture.

Check weight as carefully as cubic feet

Truck capacity has two separate limits: available cargo space and maximum loaded weight. Dense items such as books, tools, tile, appliances, and fitness equipment can reach the weight limit before the cargo body is full. Lightweight bedding and empty boxes can fill space without adding much weight.

List unusually heavy items separately and use manufacturer labels, shipping records, or a realistic household estimate where available. Do not treat a truck’s maximum load as a target. Leave room for uncertainty, and ask the rental location if a particular vehicle has a different specification than the model shown online.

Distribute weight across the cargo floor rather than concentrating it at the rear. Place heavy pieces low, secure them against movement, and avoid creating a tall, unstable stack. The rental company’s instructions and the vehicle’s labels take priority over a generic loading diagram.

Compare complete quotes, not headline rates

Request matching estimates

When comparing providers or truck sizes, enter the same origin, destination, pickup date, return date, expected mileage, and rental duration in each quote. A local round trip and a one-way move can produce very different totals even when the truck is identical. Availability also depends on the selected locations, so an attractive vehicle shown online may not be offered for your route.

U-Haul says truck size, rental duration, miles driven, and origin and destination influence price. Its truck-rental FAQ also notes that rates can change and recommends confirming a reservation to lock in the rate. Treat every estimate as date- and route-specific rather than as a permanent price.

Use a total-cost worksheet

Cost or condition What to verify
Base rental Which truck and rental period the quoted amount covers
Mileage Included miles, excess-mile treatment, and whether your route estimate is realistic
Fuel Fuel policy, starting level, return level, and the distance to fuel near the destination
Equipment Whether pads, straps, a hand truck, ramp-related equipment, or other accessories are included, rented separately, or unavailable
Protection Which insurance or damage-protection options are optional, what they cover, and their cost
Taxes and fees Local taxes, mandatory charges, environmental or facility fees, and any quoted deposit
Schedule changes Rules or charges if pickup, return time, truck size, or destination changes

U-Haul’s comparison guidance also identifies fuel, equipment, protection, and other additional costs as items to consider. Its moving-truck price guide is provider-specific, so use it to understand the categories of cost and then verify the current amount in your own reservation.

Do not choose a provider by “cheapest” reputation

No provider is universally cheapest for every route and date. A company with a lower base rate may have fewer nearby trucks, different mileage terms, a higher fuel burden, or no suitable vehicle at your pickup location. The meaningful comparison is the final estimate for the same job, plus the convenience and risk of the available pickup and return plan.

Verify driver, license, and pickup requirements

Age and license rules vary

Enterprise states that most personal truck rentals do not require a commercial driver’s license, but it also describes general age requirements, exceptions for New York and Michigan, and possible vehicle restrictions for some non-commercial drivers under 25. Those rules are not a universal industry standard. Confirm the age threshold, license class, additional-driver policy, payment requirements, and any location-specific qualification before paying a deposit.

Read the provider’s current requirements for the exact branch. The Enterprise truck-renter guide explains its general driver and reservation guidance, but the reservation location controls the applicable details.

Bring an acceptable physical license

Penske says license verification is completed at the rental location and that a paper, mobile, or digital driver’s license cannot be used for truck rental. Bring the original accepted license and any other documents the branch requests; do not assume a phone image or digital credential will be sufficient. Check the current instructions on Penske’s important rental information page if you are considering that provider.

Confirm who may drive

List every person who might operate the truck and ask whether each must appear at pickup for verification. An unlisted driver can create a contract or protection problem. If a driver is inexperienced with large vehicles, plan for extra maneuvering time, a spotter when backing, and a route that avoids tight turns where practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate handling and access before reserving a large truck

Measure more than the cargo. Check the width and height of the driveway, apartment entrance, loading dock, gate, parking space, and destination street. Look for low branches, overhead signs, narrow lanes, steep approaches, and turning areas. Ask the property manager about loading windows, elevator reservations, and whether a commercial-sized vehicle may wait at the entrance.

Enterprise advises renters to consider whether they will need to back up a large truck. Before accepting a vehicle, identify a safe way to leave the pickup location and approach both addresses. If a truck cannot turn around, arrange a spotter and a clear hand-signal plan; never rely on pedestrians to improvise around a moving vehicle.

At pickup, inspect the vehicle and compare the actual truck with the reservation. Check the cargo body, tires, lights, mirrors, doors, ramp, and tie-down points, and record existing damage according to the provider’s process. Ask staff to demonstrate unfamiliar controls. Enterprise says its staff will walk renters through vehicle features before departure; use that opportunity to ask about the parking brake, transmission, fuel gauge, cargo-door operation, and emergency procedure.

Choose the equipment that makes loading safer

Enterprise lists straps, pads, and hand trucks among its moving accessories. Moving blankets or furniture pads protect finished surfaces from abrasion, while straps keep items from shifting. A hand truck reduces repeated lifting of dense boxes and appliances. Ask whether each item is included, rented separately, limited by branch inventory, or expected to be supplied by you; do not assume a displayed accessory will be available on moving day.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Protective supplies should be part of the load plan, not an afterthought. Reserve pads for corners and surfaces that will contact the truck, use straps only at suitable anchor points, and keep a clear walking path from the cargo door to the rear of the load. Do not use damaged straps or stack items so high that a falling box can injure someone.

A practical booking process

  1. Set the move parameters. Write down the pickup address, destination, dates, expected driving distance, one-way or round-trip status, and the people who may drive.
  2. Finish the inventory. Measure every large or awkward item, count boxes, note heavy objects, and remove items that will not travel.
  3. Shortlist two truck sizes. Use the provider’s room estimate only to identify candidates; compare their actual interior length, width, height, volume, and maximum load.
  4. Check access. Confirm that the largest candidate can reach both properties, fit the loading area, and be driven by the intended renter.
  5. Request comparable quotes. Enter identical route, dates, duration, and mileage assumptions, then record fuel, equipment, protection, taxes, and fees.
  6. Verify rules with the branch. Confirm age, license format, additional drivers, payment, deposit, pickup documents, and any location-specific restrictions.
  7. Reserve the vehicle and save the confirmation. Review the exact truck class, pickup and return times, locations, included mileage, and rate. If the provider says confirmation locks the rate, complete that confirmation rather than relying on an unconfirmed estimate.
  8. Recheck shortly before moving day. Confirm branch hours, vehicle availability, equipment, loading access, and the documents you must bring. If the truck class changes, recalculate fit and cost before accepting it.

Load for stability, access, and unloading

Prepare before the truck arrives

  • Disassemble furniture that can be safely taken apart and bag its hardware.
  • Label boxes by room and mark fragile, upright, and heavy contents.
  • Protect floors and door frames along the carrying path.
  • Keep tools, tape, straps, pads, gloves, water, and a basic first-aid kit accessible rather than buried in the first stack.
  • Reserve parking and ensure the route from the building to the cargo door is clear.

Build a deliberate load

Load heavy items low and toward the front of the cargo area, then add sturdy boxes and medium-weight furniture. Use pads between pieces that can scratch each other. Keep fragile items away from compression and leave a controlled walkway or unloading sequence where possible. Strap groups of items so braking and cornering do not make them shift.

Place the belongings needed first at the rear or in a clearly marked section. If you are unloading at multiple stops, arrange the load in reverse order: the last destination goes in first, and the first destination remains accessible. Do not block the door, tie-down points, or emergency access with loose boxes.

Recheck before driving

Close and latch the cargo door, walk around the vehicle, check mirrors and lights, and confirm that nothing can fall when the door is opened. After driving a short distance, stop in a safe place to check that the load has not settled or shifted. Follow the rental company’s operating instructions and local traffic rules.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Relying on bedrooms alone

Symptom: the selected truck matches the advertised room count but cannot accept a sofa, wardrobe, or workshop equipment.

Fix: return to the inventory, measure the largest pieces, and compare them with interior dimensions and door access. Upgrade only after identifying the specific clearance or volume problem.

Comparing different quote assumptions

Symptom: one quote looks cheap because it uses fewer miles, a shorter rental, or excludes equipment and protection.

Fix: rerun every quote with the same route, dates, duration, mileage, fuel assumption, equipment, and protection choices. Record the final total, not the headline rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring weight

Symptom: the cargo body still has room, but dense boxes and appliances approach the stated maximum load.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Fix: identify heavy contents separately, reduce the load, distribute weight low and evenly, or select a vehicle whose published maximum load safely covers it.

Assuming a license on a phone will work

Symptom: the renter arrives with only a mobile or digital license and cannot complete pickup.

Fix: ask the provider and branch what documents are accepted and bring the required physical identification. Penske specifically says paper, mobile, or digital driver’s licenses cannot be used for its truck rental verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a truck that cannot reach the property

Symptom: the vehicle fits the belongings but cannot clear a gate, branch, low overhang, or tight turn.

Fix: measure access points, speak with the property manager, and plan a safe loading position before reserving. A smaller truck, alternate loading point, or professional loading help may be safer than forcing a large vehicle into a restricted space.

Leaving equipment until moving day

Symptom: the truck arrives without pads, straps, or a hand truck, or the branch has no stock.

Fix: add required accessories during the reservation, obtain written confirmation, and keep a backup plan for essential supplies. Enterprise identifies these accessories as available at local branches, which means availability should be checked rather than assumed.

Final decision checklist

  • Have you measured the largest furniture, appliances, and boxes?
  • Do those measurements fit the candidate truck’s interior length, width, height, and cargo-door access?
  • Is the estimated load below the exact vehicle’s stated maximum load?
  • Have you allowed space for pads, straps, hand trucks, and inefficient gaps?
  • Are all quotes based on the same dates, route, rental duration, and mileage?
  • Have you included fuel, equipment, protection, taxes, and possible schedule changes?
  • Does the pickup and drop-off plan work for the truck’s size and the property’s access?
  • Have every driver’s age, license, and verification requirements been confirmed with the selected location?
  • Do you know what physical documents and payment method to bring?
  • Is the reservation confirmed, and have you saved the exact vehicle and rate details?

The best reservation is not automatically the longest truck or the lowest base price. It is the vehicle whose verified dimensions and load limit match your measured inventory, whose total quote matches the real route and schedule, and whose pickup, driver, and handling requirements you can meet without improvising.
