Choose the jar by the job your mixer-grinder manual assigns to it, not by appearance alone. Use the wet-grinding jar for batters, pastes, purées and other moist mixtures; use the dry-grinding jar for dry spices, rice, sugar and dry chutney ingredients. Then verify the model’s rated capacity, blade, lid, gasket and attachment instructions before operating the appliance or ordering a replacement.
What distinguishes a wet-grinding jar from a dry-grinding jar?
A mixer-grinder jar is an engineered attachment: its blade, wall shape, lid, seal and permitted load are selected for particular ingredients and quantities. Two jars can look similar while being intended for different work. The safest choice is therefore the function stated in the appliance manual or manufacturer support page.
Wet grinding: mixtures that contain moisture
Wet grinding turns ingredients into a batter, paste, purée or pourable mixture. Typical examples listed by Philips for the HL7610/00 and HL7620/00 models include rice batter, dal batter, purées, lassi, milk shakes, dry-fruit paste and wet masala. The ingredient may be thick rather than liquid, but it still contains enough moisture for the wet-grinding assembly and its specified operating limits.

A batter that is too thick, too large a batch or too little liquid can make the motor labour and leave unmixed material around the walls.

Dry grinding: powders and finely chopped dry ingredients
Dry grinding is intended for ingredients such as dry spices, dry rice, sugar and dry chutney ingredients. Philips lists dry rice, dry masalas, chutneys in larger quantities and sugar for the dry jar on the same two models. Dry ingredients behave differently from a wet batter: they can sit under or above the blade instead of flowing around it, and fine powder can escape through an unsuitable lid or seal.
Use the dry jar only for the quantities and ingredients permitted by the manual. A dry-grinding jar is not automatically suitable for every hard ingredient, and a wet jar is not automatically suitable for making powders simply because its motor can turn.
Liquidising and chutney jars are separate functions in some designs
Some appliances divide the work into more than two categories. Product configurations described by Orient Electric distinguish chutney, dry/wet, liquidising and juicer jars. A liquidising jar may be intended for thinner preparations, while a chutney jar may be sized for a smaller or denser batch. Do not infer the assignment from the jar’s colour or size; use the label, manual or manufacturer diagram for your model.

Compare jars by the specifications that affect the result
| What to compare | Wet-grinding decision | Dry-grinding decision |
|---|---|---|
| Task | Batters, purées, lassi, milk shakes, wet masala or another moist preparation listed for the model | Dry spices, dry rice, sugar or dry chutney ingredients listed for the model |
| Rated quantity | Use the manual’s wet or liquidising capacity; do not substitute the jar’s physical volume | Use the manual’s dry-grinding capacity and any maximum-fill instruction |
| Blade | Some models assign a dedicated wet blade | Some models assign a dedicated dry blade; do not swap blades unless the manufacturer permits it |
| Lid and seal | Check whether the supplied lid and gasket are required for the wet assembly | Check the dry lid and gasket arrangement; it may differ from the wet jar |
| Minimum load | Follow the stated minimum, which may be at blade level for a particular model | Follow the stated minimum and avoid running an almost empty jar |
| Replacement fit | Match the exact appliance model and version, including lid, blade and coupler | Match the exact appliance model and version; capacity or outside dimensions alone do not prove compatibility |
The table is a decision framework, not a universal specification. A manufacturer can assign different capacities and parts to different models in the same product family.

How to choose the correct jar step by step
1. Define the ingredient and the texture you need
- Write down the intended result. Decide whether you need a pourable liquid, smooth purée, thick batter, wet paste, coarse chutney or dry powder.
- Classify the mixture by moisture. Start with the wet jar for a batter, purée or paste containing moisture. Start with the dry jar for dry spices, dry rice, sugar or other dry ingredients.
- Check the model’s task list. Manufacturer examples are more reliable than generic labels. Philips assigns rice and dal batters and wet masalas to the wet jar on HL7610/00 and HL7620/00, while assigning dry rice, dry masalas, sugar and larger-quantity chutneys to the dry jar.
- Look for a separate liquidising or chutney assignment. If the appliance includes those jars, use the one named for the preparation rather than treating every large jar as interchangeable.
2. Match the batch to the rated capacity
Jar height and apparent volume do not tell you how much an appliance is rated to process. Manuals may list separate dry-grinding, wet-grinding and liquidising capacities, sometimes for several jar sizes. Bosch’s manual, for example, separates big, medium, chutney and blender jars and gives different ratings by task. The exact figures belong to the Bosch model covered by that manual; they should not be copied as a general mixer-grinder rule.
Read the capacity table in this order:
- Identify the exact jar name or icon.
- Find the column for the operation: dry grinding, wet grinding or liquidising.
- Use the stated quantity, not the jar’s brimful volume.
- Check whether the figure is a maximum, a recommended quantity or a minimum.
- Reduce the batch and run multiple cycles if your ingredients exceed the rating.
Minimum fill matters as well. The Bosch manual says the minimum capacity for its listed jars is at least to blade level. That is a model-specific operating instruction, but it illustrates why a tiny amount in a large jar may not circulate correctly. If your manual specifies a different minimum, follow it instead.
3. Verify the blade assignment
Some mixer grinders supply separate blades for wet and dry work. Philips describes the HL7777/00 as having two specialized blades: a dry blade identified as minus-shaped and a wet blade identified as plus-shaped. Its wet-grinding examples include dhal batter and rice batter. The shape and naming apply to that model; they are not a universal colour or symbol code.
Before attaching a blade, compare its part name or illustration with the manual. Never file, bend, sharpen, drill or otherwise modify a blade to make it fit. Do not exchange wet and dry blades merely because the shaft appears identical. If a replacement blade is required, order the part specified for the appliance model and version.

4. Inspect the lid, gasket and locking arrangement
The lid is part of the working assembly. It controls leakage and helps contain splashes or powder. Philips describes the wet jar on HL7610/00 and HL7620/00 this way: “This jar is bigger and has a gasket in the lid.” The same support guidance describes the specified dry jar as: “This jar is smaller and has no gasket in the lid.” Those statements apply to those Philips models, not to every wet or dry jar on the market.
Check that the gasket is seated in its groove, that the lid closes in the orientation shown by the manufacturer and that no part is cracked or warped. If your model uses a lid without a gasket, do not add an improvised seal; use the supplied design and follow its locking instructions.
5. Confirm the jar-to-base connection
Place the jar on the motor base only in the position shown in the manual. Check the coupler, locating tabs and locking marks. A jar that sits loosely, rocks or requires force is not correctly matched, even if its blades rotate by hand. Stop and identify the correct assembly rather than defeating an interlock or holding the jar down while the motor runs.
6. For a spare, identify the exact appliance first
- Read the model number from the rating label, manual or original packaging.
- Record the series or version if the manufacturer lists more than one revision.
- Compare the replacement jar assembly, lid, gasket, blade, coupler and locking features with the manufacturer’s parts information.
- Ask the manufacturer or an authorized spare-parts seller to confirm compatibility before paying.
- Retain the old part until the new assembly is checked against the model and fits without force.
The Philips jar and blade guidance and the Bosch capacity table are tied to named models. They do not establish a rule that jars from different brands or product series can be exchanged.

What the manufacturer examples show
Philips HL7610/00 and HL7620/00: different wet and dry jar roles
For these specified models, Philips lists the wet jar for rice and dal batters, purées, lassi, milk shakes, dry-fruit paste and wet masalas. The dry jar is listed for dry rice, dry masalas, chutneys in larger quantities and sugar. Philips also describes the wet jar as bigger and fitted with a lid gasket, and the dry jar as smaller and without a lid gasket.
Use this example to understand the selection logic: the jar’s size, seal and permitted foods are coordinated. It is not evidence that every manufacturer makes a bigger wet jar or omits the dry-jar gasket.
Philips HL7777/00: separate specialized blades
Philips says this model comes with a dry blade and a wet blade, identifying them as minus-shaped and plus-shaped respectively. The support guidance associates the wet blade with dhal and rice batter. If your appliance is a different model, locate its own blade diagram before choosing an attachment.
Bosch: capacity can change by jar and operation
The Bosch manual used for this guidance lists big, medium, chutney and blender jars, with separate capacities for dry grinding, wet grinding and liquidising. It also states that the minimum capacity for the listed jars is at least to blade level. Because the actual capacity figures are model-specific, the manual’s table—not a generic online chart—must control your batch size.

McCoy: task-specific quantity and speed instructions
A McCoy mixer manual gives different quantity and speed guidance for individual tasks. Its listed examples include a maximum of half the jar for certain dry-grinding and chutney-grinding operations. Treat that as an instruction for the covered McCoy appliance, not a universal half-jar rule. If your own manual gives a different fill line or speed, use that instruction.

Overfilling
An overfilled jar can leave ingredients above the active circulation zone, strain the motor and produce an uneven texture. The cure is to weigh or measure the batch against the manual’s task-specific maximum and process it in smaller cycles.
Underfilling
A very small quantity may never reach the blade effectively. If the manual specifies a minimum at blade level, meet that minimum or select a smaller jar approved for the same task. Do not assume that a quick pulse makes an underfilled jar safe or effective.
Using the wrong capacity column
A manual may give one number for dry grinding and another for wet grinding or liquidising. Selecting the largest number on the page can overload the assembly. Read the operation heading beside the figure every time.
Ignoring consistency
Two batches with the same weight can behave differently if one is a thick batter and the other is a thin liquid. Use the jar and quantity guidance for the actual consistency, and add only the amount of liquid permitted by the recipe and appliance instructions.
Symptoms, likely causes and corrective actions
| Symptom | Check first | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients remain on the walls | Batch may be too small, too dry or outside the jar’s assigned task | Stop the appliance, follow the manual’s minimum and task assignment, and process a suitable quantity |
| Motor labours or slows | Overfilled jar, overly thick mixture or wrong blade | Switch off, reduce the batch, use the specified blade and follow the permitted consistency |
| Powder escapes around the lid | Wrong lid, damaged seal or dry ingredients above the rated quantity | Stop, refit the correct lid, inspect the gasket arrangement and reduce the quantity |
| Jar leaks during wet grinding | Lid gasket, lid seating or jar compatibility | Unplug the appliance, reseat or replace the model-approved part and do not run a leaking assembly |
| Jar will not lock on the base | Different model, version or coupler | Do not force it; verify the model number and obtain the specified assembly |
| Texture is inconsistent | Wrong jar category, unsuitable batch size or insufficient processing cycles | Use the assigned wet, dry, chutney or liquidising jar and divide the batch according to the manual |
A practical buying checklist for a replacement jar
- Model identity: Write down the complete appliance model and version.
- Function: Specify wet, dry, chutney or liquidising use rather than asking for a generic jar.
- Assembly contents: Confirm whether the price includes the jar body, lid, gasket, blade and coupler.
- Capacity: Match the manufacturer’s rated capacity for the intended operation.
- Blade: Verify the correct wet or dry blade and its part designation.
- Lid and seal: Confirm the gasket arrangement and locking method.
- Seller verification: Request compatibility confirmation from the manufacturer or an authorized parts seller.
- Return conditions: Check the seller’s policy before opening or using the part, since a visually similar jar may still be incompatible.
Search terms such as “wet grinding jar,” “dry grinding jar” or “replacement mixer grinder jar for your model” describe the function, but they do not prove fit. Capacity or brand name alone is insufficient evidence of compatibility.
How to make the final choice quickly
- Moist batter, paste or purée: Select the manufacturer-designated wet jar, then check its wet capacity and wet blade.
- Dry spices, rice or sugar: Select the designated dry jar, then check the dry capacity, dry blade and lid arrangement.
- Thin drinks or liquids: Check whether the appliance assigns a separate liquidising or blender jar.
- Chutney: Use the chutney jar or the jar specifically listed for that quantity and consistency.
- Any replacement: Stop at the model-number check. If the exact model and version cannot be confirmed, do not order based only on photographs.
The right jar is the one whose task, capacity, blade and closure are documented for your exact appliance. Manufacturer examples demonstrate why a universal wet-versus-dry rule is less reliable than the model’s own instructions.
