Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The right Minecraft hosting plan is determined by your edition, server software, concurrent players, mod or plugin load, CPU speed, storage, and player locations—not by RAM alone. For a small vanilla Java group, start around 2–4 GB on a high-clock CPU. A Paper server with plugins and 10–30 players generally needs about 6–8 GB. Modpacks or a public server usually justify 8–16 GB or more, while Bedrock-only servers can often use a smaller plan. Treat those figures as planning ranges, then leave 20–30% headroom and verify the provider’s CPU policy, network limits, backups, and upgrade terms before paying.
Quick answer: which Minecraft server hosting plan fits?
Use this table as a starting point, not a guarantee. Player behavior, view distance, redstone machines, entities, world generation, plugins, and modpacks can move a server into a higher tier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Use case | Starting RAM range | CPU and storage target | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Java, about 1–10 players | 2–4 GB | High-clock modern CPU; NVMe storage | Community and vendor estimates; Mojang does not publish official Java server RAM requirements. |
| Paper, Spigot, or similar with plugins, about 10–30 players | 6–8 GB | High single-thread performance; NVMe | Increase RAM for heavy plugins, large worlds, or high simulation distance. |
| Plugin-heavy public server, about 20–50 players | 6–12 GB | Prefer dedicated CPU resources and fast storage | Vendor ranges disagree; measure actual memory and tick performance. |
| Forge or NeoForge modpacks | 8–12 GB for a modest player list; 8–16 GB or more for larger communities | Fast CPU, NVMe, reliable backups | Modpack version and client requirements can change the baseline substantially. |
| Bedrock-only server | Plan for 4 GB | Fast CPU and SSD/NVMe | Minecraft.net lists 4 GB in its requirements box but says at least 1 GB for small servers in its FAQ; use the more conservative 4 GB plan. |
Add a 20–30% capacity buffer above your calculated target for the operating system, scheduled backups, world saves, and peak sessions. A plan that is full during normal play has no room for a new player joining, a chunk-generation burst, or a backup job.
Choose Java or Bedrock before choosing a host
Java Edition
Java servers use Mojang’s Java server software or a compatible server implementation such as Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. The official Java server download is free, but the server jar requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment. Java is the usual choice for PC communities that need extensive mods, plugins, or the broadest server-software ecosystem.

Bedrock Edition
Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is the straightforward option for Bedrock clients, including console players. BDS uses UDP and its default IPv4 port is 19132. Minecraft.net lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for the Linux build and requires a broadband connection. The official requirements page lists 180 MB to 1 GB for the server software itself, but your world, logs, addons, and backups need additional disk space.
Crossplay with a bridge
Java and Bedrock are not directly compatible. A bridge such as Geyser can let Bedrock players join a Java server, but it adds processing and memory overhead. Size the Java server for the Java workload first, then add headroom for the bridge and the number of Bedrock connections. Exact overhead varies by version, plugins, and player behavior, so do not subtract RAM merely because Bedrock clients are joining.

What the official numbers do—and do not—say
Mojang’s official Java server page does not specify CPU or RAM requirements. Its Java system-requirements article describes the game client, not a dedicated server: it lists 8 GB of system memory with a discrete GPU and 12 GB with integrated graphics, plus a four-core processor. Those client figures must not be used to size a hosted server.
The community Server/Requirements page lists at least 1 GB allocated for a server to run, while the Java tutorial recommends at least 2 GB for a small server and says larger servers may need 4 GB. These are minimum or small-server guidance, not a promise of smooth performance at a particular player count.

Practical RAM ranges
| Workload | Planning range | What can push it higher |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla or lightly modified Java, 1–10 players | About 3–4 GB in several 2026 vendor guides | High render or simulation distance, rapid exploration, many entities, or frequent world generation. |
| Plugins, 20–50 players | About 6–12 GB in vendor estimates | Large plugin stacks, map systems, economy data, minigames, and simultaneous chunk loading. |
| Forge or NeoForge modpacks | Commonly 8–12 GB even with a modest player list | Large modpacks, custom dimensions, heavy automation, and client/server version changes. |
These ranges come from vendor guides and disagree with one another, so regard them as a sizing envelope rather than a measured standard. After launch, watch the host’s memory graph and the server’s tick-time or MSPT data. If memory remains near the limit during ordinary play, upgrade before players experience out-of-memory crashes; if memory is comfortable but ticks are slow, more RAM will not fix a CPU bottleneck.
Calculate a safer starting allocation
- Choose the range for your edition and software from the table.
- Add expected peak players, not your average evening count.
- Add 20–30% for the operating system, backups, and bursts.
- Add extra allowance for a Java-to-Bedrock bridge or unusually heavy modpack.
- Confirm that the advertised RAM is dedicated to your instance rather than a burstable or oversubscribed ceiling.
CPU: prioritize clock speed and single-thread performance
Minecraft’s main server tick is sensitive to single-thread performance. Multiple hosting guides target at least 2.5 GHz, preferably 3.0 GHz or higher; one guide recommends 3.5 GHz or higher for Paper, Purpur, Fabric, or NeoForge. Clock speed alone is not a complete benchmark, but it is a useful screening number when comparing otherwise similar plans.
Recommended Free Tools
The community wiki notes that the server typically uses about three cores at most, so a plan advertising many vCPUs is not automatically faster. Ask whether cores are dedicated, pinned, or fair-share. A throttled shared CPU can produce lag even when the instance has plenty of unused RAM.
View distance and simulation distance of 8–10 are commonly suggested ways to reduce load. Lowering them decreases the number of chunks and entities the server must process, often providing more benefit than buying RAM for a CPU-limited world.

Storage: choose speed, capacity, and recoverability
NVMe for active worlds
Hosting guides consistently recommend NVMe storage for faster world loading and saves. SSD or NVMe will not cure a weak CPU, but it reduces wait time during startup, chunk access, and save operations compared with slower disks.
Size for the world plus backups
No reliable universal disk quota was established for Minecraft worlds. The community tutorial suggests reserving at least 5 GB for the world, but exploration can make a world much larger and each backup consumes additional space. Check the provider’s allowance against your expected world size, logs, plugins or mods, and the number of retained backups. A plan with enough RAM but a tiny disk can stop the server when a backup or world save needs room.
Backups and restore testing
Confirm how often backups run, how many are retained, where they are stored, and whether you can download them. Test restoring a backup on a separate instance before you need it. A backup that exists but cannot be restored is not a recovery plan.
Bandwidth, ports, and player latency
The Minecraft Wiki gives a community guideline for BDS of 5 Mbps upload and 10 Mbps download per 10 players. It is a planning figure, not a guaranteed requirement for every world. Java uses TCP, while BDS uses UDP; ensure the host supports the protocol and port your edition needs.

Home hosting becomes a weak choice above roughly 20 players because residential upload often tops out around 10–50 Mbps, and connections can suffer from latency, data caps, power outages, or changing addresses. A data centre near most players usually matters more than a small increase in advertised bandwidth. Ask where the instance is physically located and whether network capacity is shared.
What does a Minecraft hosting plan cost in 2026?
Prices change frequently and vary by region, billing term, CPU policy, storage, and support. The following figures are from a 2026 Valebyte VPS guide and should be verified on the provider’s current pricing page before purchase.
| Workload | Indicative monthly price | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 players with light plugins | About $7–$10 | Vendor estimate; volatile and not a market-wide rate. |
| 10–20 players on Spigot or Paper | About $15–$20 | Vendor estimate; confirm CPU allocation and backup costs. |
| 30–50 or more players with large modpacks or proxies | $40 or more | Vendor estimate; requirements vary widely with software and concurrency. |
| Dedicated hardware | About $80–$100 or more | Vendor estimate; justified when predictable CPU performance or isolation matters. |
Check whether taxes, backups, additional storage, a dedicated IP, setup fees, and bandwidth overages are included. A low headline price can become expensive if every upgrade adds a separate charge.
Provider checks before you pay
- Resource policy: Is the CPU dedicated, pinned, or fair-share? Is the advertised RAM guaranteed per instance?
- Upgrade continuity: Does your IP and port remain the same after increasing RAM or CPU? Can you scale without rebuilding the world?
- Location: Is there a data centre close to your player base, and can you choose the region?
- Backups: Are automated backups included, retained off the host, downloadable, and restorable?
- Support: Is support available when your server is down? One hosting guide prefers 24/7 live chat, but response-time guarantees differ.
- Software controls: Can you select the exact Java, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or BDS version and upload custom jars or modpacks?
- Network details: Are the required TCP or UDP ports open, and are there connection or bandwidth limits?
- Cancellation and export: Can you download the world, configuration, and logs if you leave?
Java versions you must match
Java compatibility changes with Minecraft releases. The Minecraft Wiki notes that Minecraft 1.20.5 and later require Java 21, while Minecraft 26.1 and later require Java 25. Select the runtime that matches the server version and mod loader; do not assume the host’s default Java is correct. Keep a copy of your startup command and verify the runtime with the host’s console or control panel before changing versions.

A step-by-step selection process
- List your players and edition. Record the maximum simultaneous Java players, Bedrock players, or both. Decide whether consoles must connect.
- Select server software. Choose vanilla for simplicity, Paper or another plugin-capable implementation for administration and performance features, or the exact mod loader required by your modpack.
- Estimate the workload. Use the RAM table, include peak concurrency, then add 20–30% headroom. Add allowance for a crossplay bridge and heavy automation.
- Screen CPU specifications. Prefer a high-clock processor, ask about fair-share throttling, and avoid choosing by vCPU count alone.
- Verify disk and backups. Allow for the world, logs, software, and retained backups; choose NVMe when available.
- Check network geography. Pick the data-centre region that minimizes latency for most players and confirm the correct TCP or UDP port.
- Price the complete plan. Include taxes, backups, extra storage, dedicated IPs, and likely upgrade costs.
- Confirm upgrade and exit paths. Ask whether the address remains stable, whether resources can be increased without migration, and how to export your world.
- Benchmark during a trial or first billing period. Test a peak session, generate new chunks, run scheduled backups, and inspect tick time and memory usage before inviting a larger community.
Recommended starting points by server type
Friends on vanilla Java
For up to about 10 players, a 2–4 GB plan with a fast CPU is a sensible starting point. Keep view and simulation distances moderate, then watch memory and tick time during exploration. Upgrade when measured usage, not marketing limits, shows the need.
Paper with plugins
For roughly 10–30 players, start around 6–8 GB with high single-thread CPU performance and NVMe. Audit plugins before increasing RAM: a poorly behaved plugin can create lag that memory cannot solve.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Large modpacks or public servers
Plan for 8–16 GB or more and consider dedicated hardware when player counts, automation, or proxies are substantial. Match the exact modpack version and Java runtime, and budget for off-host backups.
Bedrock-only community
Use BDS and plan on 4 GB because Mojang’s requirements box and FAQ conflict; the conservative figure avoids relying on the 1 GB small-server statement. Check addon behavior, redstone density, and the BDS UDP port, then size storage for the world and backups.
Symptoms that your plan is wrong
- Out-of-memory crash or constant swapping: Increase RAM, reduce view or simulation distance, and review mods and plugins.
- Low memory use but delayed actions or low TPS: Investigate CPU clock speed, fair-share throttling, entity counts, and expensive plugins before adding RAM.
- Players disconnect during busy periods: Check data-centre latency, packet loss, bandwidth limits, and whether the host is rate-limiting connections.
- Backups fail or the disk fills: Increase storage, reduce retention, move backups off-host, and remove obsolete logs or worlds.
- Bedrock clients cannot connect: Verify BDS is running, UDP port 19132 is reachable, and the host supports the required network protocol.
- Modded clients refuse to join: Confirm the server jar, loader, mods, and Java runtime all match the client’s versions.
Bottom line
Choose the edition and software first, size RAM from peak players and workload, then prioritize single-thread CPU performance, NVMe storage, nearby network location, and recoverable backups. In 2026, the practical starting points are about 2–4 GB for a small vanilla Java group, 6–8 GB for a plugin server with 10–30 players, 8–16 GB or more for substantial modpacks or public communities, and 4 GB for Bedrock Dedicated Server despite Mojang’s conflicting 1 GB FAQ guidance. Treat vendor prices and sizing ranges as estimates, verify the current terms, and leave room to upgrade without losing your world or address.
