Choose a connection that both the audio source’s output and the powered speaker’s input support—and make sure they accept the same signal type and level. Balanced XLR or 1/4-inch TRS is common in professional audio; RCA and 3.5 mm are common consumer analog connections. Bluetooth, USB audio, optical, and phono support vary by model, so check the labels and manuals at both ends before connecting.
Start with the signal, not the plug
Powered speakers contain their own amplification, but their inputs are not interchangeable. A port may accept a microphone-level, line-level, phono-level, or digital signal. Match the source output to an input designed for that signal. A connector adapter changes the plug shape; it does not necessarily convert the signal, provide a preamp, or make an unbalanced connection balanced.
Before choosing a cable, check the output and input labels in both devices’ manuals. Confirm the source’s output mode, the speaker’s supported input type, and any mic/line selector setting. If either end lacks the required input or conversion, you may need a suitable interface or preamp.
Compare the connection options
| Connection | Common use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced XLR | Professional audio line-level connections | Both devices must support the appropriate signal and connection. Use a suitable cable; an adapter alone does not ensure a balanced path. |
| Balanced 1/4-inch TRS | Professional audio line-level connections | Check that the source output and speaker input are balanced TRS audio connections, not a different use of a similar-looking jack. |
| RCA | Common unbalanced consumer analog connection | Confirm RCA line-level inputs and outputs are present and compatible at both ends. |
| 3.5 mm analog | Common consumer-device analog connection | Check the speaker’s supported input and the source’s output. Do not assume a plug adapter resolves a signal-level mismatch. |
| Bluetooth | Convenient wireless playback | Both devices must support the needed Bluetooth connection; availability depends on the speaker model. |
| Optical or USB audio | Digital connections, such as a TV or computer connection | Verify that the speaker accepts that digital format. A USB-shaped port may be for power rather than audio. |
| Phono | Turntable connection | A phono preamp must be present in the turntable, speaker, or another device in the chain before feeding a line input. |
There is no universal sound-quality ranking established for these connection types. Choose based on compatibility, the source and speaker features, and whether the installation is fixed or you value wireless convenience.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match the connection to your source
Mixer or audio interface to a powered PA or monitor
When both devices provide balanced outputs and inputs, use a suitably wired XLR or TRS connection. Yorkville Sound’s EF10P documentation lists XLR and 1/4-inch TRS line-level main inputs. PreSonus documents balanced TRS main outputs on its MicroStation BT for connecting speakers or a power amplifier. Check the exact output and input on your own equipment before selecting a cable.
Consumer device with RCA output
If the source and powered speaker both have compatible RCA line-level connections, use them. The JBL LSR2300 and PreSonus Eris E5 BT documentation are examples of powered-speaker documentation that supports RCA connections. Confirm the actual model’s ports and signal requirements; RCA describes the connector, not a guarantee that any RCA output is suitable for any RCA input.

Phone or computer
Look for a matching analog input, supported Bluetooth connection, or digital audio input such as USB audio. Do not infer audio support from the shape of a USB port: PreSonus says the MicroStation BT’s USB-C connector supplies power and does not appear as an audio device. If the source and speaker do not share a supported connection, an appropriate audio interface or other conversion device may be needed.

TV
Use a format supported by both the television’s audio output and the speaker’s input, then check the TV’s audio-output settings. For example, Klipsch advertises optical and analog inputs, plus Bluetooth, on the R-26PF. That feature set is specific to that model; consult the manuals for your TV and speakers to confirm the connection and settings.

Turntable
Determine whether the turntable has a phono preamp and whether the speaker has a phono input or integrated preamp. A turntable’s phono-level output needs phono preamplification before it goes to a line input. Klipsch advertises an integrated phono preamp on the R-26PF, but powered speakers do not universally include one.
Microphone to a powered PA
Connect a microphone to an input intended for mic level, or set a combo input to mic mode if the manual directs you to do so. Do not treat a microphone as a line-level source. On the Rockville BPA10, the manual says its mic/line selector applies to the XLR and 1/4-inch inputs and warns not to use both ports at once. Follow the instructions for your specific speaker.

Set up the connection safely
- Identify the source output. Check its connector, signal type and level, and any output-mode setting in the source manual.
- Identify the speaker input. Check the speaker’s port labels and manual for supported analog, digital, wireless, mic, line, or phono signals.
- Choose a compatible path. Prefer matching supported outputs and inputs. If the source signal needs a preamp or conversion that neither device provides, add an appropriate device rather than relying on a plug adapter.
- Set input modes as directed. If the speaker has a mic/line switch, set it for the source and follow any restrictions on simultaneous inputs.
- Connect and configure the source. For a TV or computer digital connection, select the corresponding audio output where required. Consult both manuals if the expected input is not available or there is no sound.
Choose a cable only after checking both ends
A balanced 1/4-inch TRS audio cable is appropriate when the source provides a compatible balanced TRS output and the powered speaker has a compatible balanced TRS input. Yorkville’s EF10P and PreSonus’s MicroStation BT are documented examples of equipment with those respective connections. Check your own devices’ manuals before buying: a shared plug size does not establish signal compatibility.
