Choose the Huawei MatePad Pro 12-inch PaperMatte Edition if reflections are a recurring problem or you plan to read, annotate, or draw for long periods. Huawei designed its PaperMatte surface to diffuse reflected light, which can be useful near windows, under overhead lighting, and outdoors. Huawei’s current Global listing names the relevant product the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 12-inch PaperMatte Edition. “PaperMatte” is an edition-specific display treatment, not a setting that can be enabled on every 12-inch MatePad Pro. Before ordering, match the name, model number, storage configuration, and box contents shown for your country.
Do not assume that a listing for a MatePad Pro 12.2-inch model is the same product. In practical terms, the surface spreads a sharp reflection over a wider area instead of presenting a small, mirror-like reflection. That can make text easier to keep in view when a window or lamp is behind you. It does not eliminate reflections, make every room equally comfortable, or guarantee relief from eye fatigue. Huawei states that the device is not a medical device, so treat PaperMatte as an optical and usability feature rather than a health treatment.
The KSA product page describes nano-level etching intended to reduce glare and sparkle. It also reports a 30% higher anti-reflection rate than the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 12.2-inch PaperMatte Edition 2025 in a Huawei laboratory comparison. That is a manufacturer-reported result against one named reference device; it is not a universal measurement against glossy tablets or all lighting conditions.

Choose according to your lighting and main activity
There is no single “best” screen surface. PaperMatte is most defensible when controlling reflections is more important than obtaining the most mirror-like highlights.
Choose PaperMatte when light is difficult to control
- You read beside a bright window, in a conservatory, on a train, or under strong overhead lights.

Reading is the clearest PaperMatte use case when your environment produces distracting reflections. The 302 ppi resolution, 3036 × 1952 pixel canvas, and 12-inch size provide room for full-page documents, split-screen notes, and large-format PDFs. The diffuse-reflection design can reduce the visual dominance of a window or lamp over black text, but the effect depends on the angle, brightness, and cleanliness of the display.
A practical reading setup
- Start with room lighting. Position the tablet so the strongest lamp or window is not directly behind your head. PaperMatte helps with reflected light; it does not replace sensible positioning.
- Set a comfortable text size. Use the reading app’s font or document zoom controls rather than moving your face closer to the screen.
- Test both orientations. A reflection that is diffuse in portrait mode can appear differently in landscape mode because the light source and viewing angle change.
- Check a real document. Open the PDFs, scanned pages, spreadsheets, or web pages you actually use. Matte treatment cannot fix a low-resolution scan, poor font rendering, or an app with weak reflow.

Is PaperMatte worth it for drawing and handwriting?
PaperMatte is a sensible choice for artists and note-takers who dislike strong reflections while working. The important limitation is that the screen surface is only one part of the pen experience. You also need the compatible stylus, a drawing or note app that supports your workflow, and a software build with the functions you expect.

Stylus and app requirements
Huawei promotes the HUAWEI M-Pencil Pro and the GoPaint drawing app for this tablet. Huawei states that the stylus shown on its product page is not standard configuration and must be purchased separately. The KSA page claims more than 10,000 pressure-sensitivity levels; this is Huawei’s product claim, not an independent test result.

- The exact M-Pencil Pro model is compatible with your local MatePad Pro 12-inch SKU.
- The pen is included in the advertised bundle or budgeted as a separate purchase.
- GoPaint and your preferred note-taking or illustration apps are available for your market and HarmonyOS build.
- Features such as shortcut gestures, pressure response, or hover behavior are supported in the apps you intend to use.
How to evaluate the drawing feel

Does the matte display make videos look worse?
“Matte” is not an automatic verdict on video quality. This tablet’s published 3036 × 1952 resolution, P3 wide colour gamut, 1.07 billion colours, 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, flexible OLED panel, and up-to-144-Hz refresh claim are all relevant to video playback. Huawei’s brightness figure is 1600 nits, with the qualification that brightness varies by environment and content.
Those numbers do not establish independent colour accuracy, calibrated HDR behavior, sustained brightness, motion quality in every app, or superiority over a glossy display. A diffuse surface can make a bright room easier to watch by reducing a sharp reflection, while a viewer in a dark room may prefer the visual character of a glossy screen. Video buyer test
- Watch a dark scene. Check whether black areas and shadow detail look satisfying at your normal brightness.
- Watch a bright, high-contrast scene. Look for the way highlights, skies, and specular details appear through the matte surface.
- View text overlays and subtitles. Confirm that the 12-inch format and chosen viewing distance suit your eyes.
- Test in your real room. Compare the screen with the window, lamps, and seating position you actually use.
