For most phones, start with 16–64 Ω headphones. That range is generally easy for portable outputs, provided the headphones have ordinary sensitivity. For an audio interface, do not try to match the headphone’s impedance to a number on the interface: check the interface’s published headphone-output power, output impedance and recommended maximum load. Headphones rated around 150–300 Ω often need a dedicated amplifier, while a low-impedance model can still be difficult if its sensitivity is low.

What headphone impedance means

Impedance, measured in ohms (Ω), is the electrical load a headphone presents to its source. It is not a quality score and it does not directly tell you how loud a headphone will play. A source must provide the right combination of voltage and current to drive that load.

  • Higher impedance: usually requires more voltage to reach a given level. This is common in studio and high-end headphones rated at 150, 250 or 300 Ω.
  • Lower impedance: generally reaches useful levels from small portable outputs, but it can demand more current. A low-impedance headphone with unusually low sensitivity may still sound quiet.
  • Variable impedance: many dynamic headphones change impedance across the frequency range. The printed rating is a nominal value, not a guarantee that the load is identical at every frequency.

The practical question is therefore not “Which impedance is best?” but “Can this source deliver enough voltage and current for this headphone at my desired listening level without changing its frequency response?”

Impedance, sensitivity and output: the three specifications that matter

Impedance is only the load

A 32 Ω headphone is not automatically easier to drive than a 250 Ω model. Impedance describes the load, while sensitivity describes how much acoustic output the headphone produces for a stated electrical input. Manufacturers normally express sensitivity as dB/mW or dB/V. Compare values only when the units are the same; dB/mW and dB/V are not interchangeable without accounting for impedance.

Sensitivity determines how much level you get

Two headphones with the same impedance can have very different loudness from the same phone or interface. Lower sensitivity means the source must deliver more power for the same sound-pressure level. When a specification lists sensitivity in dB/mW, the relevant comparison is power at the headphone’s impedance. When it lists dB/V, compare the source’s available voltage instead.

Source output impedance can alter the sound

The output impedance of the phone, interface or amplifier should be low relative to the headphone’s impedance. A high source output impedance interacts with a headphone whose impedance changes by frequency and can shift its frequency response, often producing audible tonal changes. Audeze Customer Service gives a practical rule of thumb: amplifier output impedance should be about one-eighth of the headphone’s rated impedance or lower. That is guidance rather than a universal law, but it is a useful screening test.

Choosing impedance for a phone, tablet or laptop

Use 16–64 Ω as the starting range

Sennheiser Hearing’s 2026 guidance identifies 16–64 Ω as generally easy to drive from phones and portable players. This range is the safest starting point when you cannot verify the output specifications of your particular device. Check sensitivity as well: a 16 Ω headphone with very low sensitivity may still need more output than an efficient 64 Ω model.

What about 120 Ω?

Headphones around 120 Ω can work from some portable devices, but Sennheiser notes that they may benefit from amplification. Whether they are satisfactory depends on the phone’s maximum voltage, the headphone’s sensitivity and how loudly you listen. A phone that reaches your normal level cleanly has enough output; there is no benefit in adding an amplifier merely to make the impedance numbers look similar.

When 150–300 Ω becomes a phone problem

Sennheiser places 150–300 Ω headphones in the range that typically sounds best with a dedicated headphone amplifier. A phone may produce music through them, yet run out of voltage before reaching a comfortable level. The symptoms are a volume control near maximum, insufficient headroom for quiet recordings, audible distortion on peaks or a thin, strained presentation when the output clips. These symptoms, rather than the impedance number alone, justify an amplifier.

Modern phones may not have a built-in analog output

If your phone has no headphone jack, the digital-to-analog converter and headphone amplifier are in the USB-C or Lightning adapter. Treat that adapter as the source: its output capability, not the phone’s battery rating, determines whether a high-impedance headphone will be loud enough. A different adapter can therefore change the result even with the same phone and headphones.

Can your audio interface drive 250 Ω or 300 Ω headphones?

Read the exact interface manual rather than trying to match impedance values. Focusrite explicitly states that you do not need to match your headphone impedance to the Scarlett’s impedance, or to any value below it. The relevant limits are the interface’s published recommended maximum impedance and output power at representative loads.

Focusrite interface family Published recommended maximum headphone impedance How to use the figure
Scarlett 4th Gen 300 Ω 250 Ω and 300 Ω models fall within the stated recommendation, subject to sensitivity and the interface’s available level.
Scarlett 1st–3rd Gen, USB-powered 200 Ω A 250 Ω or 300 Ω model exceeds the published recommendation; use a separate amplifier if level or headroom is inadequate.
Scarlett 1st–3rd Gen, mains-powered 250 Ω A 250 Ω model is within the stated recommendation; 300 Ω is beyond it.
Clarett and Red ranges 600 Ω These families have a higher published maximum, but sensitivity and actual output power still determine usable volume.

These are family-level recommendations from Focusrite’s 2026 information. Your specific model and revision can have different output specifications, so confirm the manual before purchasing.

Example: Scarlett 18i20 4th Gen

The Focusrite User Guide lists a 200 Ω headphone output impedance, 57 mW into 33 Ω and 27 mW into 300 Ω for the 18i20 4th Gen. Those figures illustrate why output must be considered at the headphone’s actual load: the available power is not the same at 33 Ω and 300 Ω. They also show why a headline wattage without a load condition is not enough to predict performance.

A repeatable method for selecting headphones

  1. Identify the source. Write down the exact phone, USB adapter, laptop, audio interface or dedicated amplifier you will use.
  2. Record both headphone specifications. Note nominal impedance and sensitivity, including whether sensitivity is stated in dB/mW or dB/V. Check whether the manufacturer warns about a large impedance rise.
  3. Check the source’s output data. Look for maximum voltage, power at 32/33 Ω and 250/300 Ω, output impedance and any recommended maximum headphone impedance.
  4. For a phone, begin at 16–64 Ω. Move outside that range only when the phone or adapter’s output is documented and the headphone’s sensitivity is suitable.
  5. For an interface, compare load-specific power. A specification at 32 Ω cannot be assumed to apply at 250 or 300 Ω. Confirm that the model’s recommended maximum covers your headphone.
  6. Estimate your headroom. You need more than “barely loud.” Leave room for quiet recordings, EQ boosts and musical peaks. If normal listening requires the last few volume steps, treat that as inadequate headroom.
  7. Check output impedance. Apply the approximately one-eighth rule as a quick check, especially with headphones whose impedance varies strongly by frequency.
  8. Choose amplification only if needed. If the source is quiet or strained at normal levels, select a portable or desktop headphone amplifier with published voltage and power at your headphone’s impedance.

When a headphone amplifier is the right solution

A headphone amplifier is directly relevant when the source cannot provide enough voltage, current or clean headroom. Choose one by its output specifications, not by a large wattage number on the front of the box.

  • Verify power or voltage at the headphone’s rated impedance, such as 32, 250 or 300 Ω.
  • Check the amplifier’s output impedance. Lower is generally safer, and the one-eighth rule is a useful target.
  • Confirm that the amplifier accepts your source connection: analog line output, USB, balanced output or another documented interface.
  • Make sure its gain range is appropriate. Excessive gain can make channel imbalance and accidental over-volume more likely with sensitive, low-impedance headphones.

A portable amplifier can solve a phone’s high-impedance, low-volume problem. A desktop amplifier is more suitable when you need multiple outputs, sustained high levels or integration with an interface. Neither device automatically improves sound; it provides electrical capability the original source lacked.

Diagnosing common problems

The headphones are too quiet

  1. Set the phone or interface to a known, safe listening level and confirm that no software volume limiter is active.
  2. Check the headphone’s sensitivity and compare it with the source’s output at that impedance.
  3. Test another pair with similar sensitivity. If both are quiet, the source is the likely limitation.
  4. Use an amplifier whose published output is sufficient at the headphone’s rated impedance.

The sound distorts when you turn it up

Distortion at high volume usually means the source has reached its voltage or current limit, not that the impedance is “too high” in isolation. Reduce the level to protect your hearing, then add an amplifier or choose a more efficient headphone.

The tonal balance changes between sources

Compare the output impedance of the sources. A high output impedance can interact with a variable-impedance headphone and alter its frequency response. A low-output-impedance amplifier should reduce that interaction.

One channel is quieter

First check the plug, adapter, balance control and cable. With very sensitive, low-impedance headphones, a source with poor channel matching at the bottom of its volume range can also cause imbalance. Lower-gain operation or an attenuator designed for headphones may help, but do not add resistance blindly because it raises source output impedance.

Does higher impedance mean better sound?

No. Impedance is an electrical design choice, not a sound-quality ranking. High-impedance models can be excellent for studio systems with ample voltage, while low-impedance models can be excellent for portable listening. Sound quality depends on the headphone’s acoustic design, tuning, distortion, fit, seal and the source’s ability to drive it cleanly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Higher impedance can offer practical benefits in some systems: it may reduce the effect of a moderately high source output impedance and can suit professional equipment designed for greater voltage swing. It can also be inconvenient with phones and weak interface outputs. Lower impedance is convenient for portable sources but makes current capability and output-impedance interaction more important.

Open, closed and semi-closed designs are a separate decision

Impedance does not determine isolation. Closed-back headphones reduce microphone bleed and are usually better for recording near an open microphone. Open or semi-closed designs can suit control-room listening and long sessions when leakage is acceptable. Choose the acoustic enclosure for the room and recording task, then verify that the source can drive the selected impedance and sensitivity.

Quick decision chart

Your situation Practical starting choice What to verify
Phone or portable player 16–64 Ω Sensitivity, adapter output and clean volume at your normal level.
Portable source and approximately 120 Ω May work without an amplifier Whether the source reaches normal level with headroom; amplification may help.
Phone with 150–300 Ω headphones Plan for a dedicated amplifier Voltage and power at the headphone’s impedance.
Scarlett 4th Gen with 250–300 Ω Within the family’s published 300 Ω recommendation Exact model, sensitivity and available headroom.
USB-powered Scarlett 1st–3rd Gen with 250–300 Ω Outside the published 200 Ω recommendation Use an external amplifier if output is insufficient.
Clarett or Red with high-impedance headphones Up to the published 600 Ω recommendation Exact model’s power, sensitivity and output impedance.
