Start with a backup, note the exact error code or stuck percentage, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your version of Windows. Restart when it finishes and check for updates again. If the problem persists, use the code and symptom to choose a targeted next step rather than changing update components at random.

Before troubleshooting, protect your files and note the symptom

Back up personal files before changing update settings or components. Microsoft suggests copying files to a USB drive or backing up selected folders with OneDrive in its Windows update troubleshooting guide.

Record the exact error code, whether the failure happens during download, installation, or restart, and any percentage shown. Those details help distinguish a stalled update from a code-specific problem.

Run the troubleshooter for your Windows version

Windows 11

Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. You can also open the Settings troubleshooter at Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps and Windows Update Troubleshooter guidance describe these routes.

Windows 10

Start with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. The Settings route is Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run, according to Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guide.

When the tool finishes, restart the PC and select Check for updates. If it finds no fix or the problem continues, run it again to check for more errors, then consult guidance for the exact code or symptom. Labels can vary across devices and interface updates; use the wording shown in your Windows version. Microsoft explains the Get Help troubleshooter flow in its Windows troubleshooters overview.

Use the error code to choose the next step

An error code is a clue, not a diagnosis: Microsoft lists possible causes, and more than one cause may fit a code. Run the troubleshooter first and read the instructions for the context in which the code appeared before making system changes. The table summarizes examples from Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guide and upgrade and installation error guidance.

Error code Possible cause Microsoft lists Reasonable next step
0x8007000d Windows Update files or update-cache corruption Start with the troubleshooter. Microsoft also describes clearing the SoftwareDistribution download cache by stopping and restarting the Windows Update service; back up first and follow its instructions rather than deleting files without guidance.
0x800705b4 The update took too long to install or was interrupted Check the internet connection, restart, and run the troubleshooter; consult Microsoft’s service and cache guidance if needed.
0x80240034 Incomplete update or connection issue Check the connection and whether Windows Update services are running, then run the troubleshooter.
0x800f0922 Insufficient storage or component-related issues in Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance; inability to connect to update servers is another possible meaning in its upgrade-error guidance Use the instructions that match the update context; do not assume one cause from the code alone.
0xC1900101 An incompatible driver Microsoft’s relevant guidance suggests addressing network or graphics drivers and using a clean boot. Driver removal is an advanced step: identify the device and make sure you can restore its driver before proceeding.
0x80248014 Windows Update database problem or service not running Check service status and run the troubleshooter.
0x80070005 Access denied or insufficient permissions Check administrator access. For a work- or school-managed PC, ask the administrator before changing settings.
0x80070002 or 0x80070003 Update failed to install Restart, run the troubleshooter, and check available storage.
0x80070422 Windows Update service is disabled or stopped Check that the service is enabled and running, following Microsoft’s instructions.
0x80070020 Another program or process is blocking the update Restart, then use Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps to investigate possible interference.

Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%

If a download or installation appears stuck at 0% or 100%, Microsoft recommends restarting, checking internet connectivity, and checking available storage. Its guidance does not give a universal time limit after which a stalled percentage proves the update has failed, so do not treat an arbitrary wait as a diagnosis. See Microsoft’s steps for update progress problems.

Windows Update got to 51–99% and won’t complete installation

Microsoft says installation time depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size. If progress remains at the same percentage, check for updates again or run the troubleshooter. The percentage alone does not establish why installation stopped; use any displayed error code to narrow the next step.

When to use more advanced steps or ask for help

Move from the built-in tool and basic connection and storage checks to service, cache, system-file, or driver changes only when Microsoft’s guidance for the specific error calls for them. These changes can affect system behavior, and the correct action depends on the code and device.

What Windows 10’s end of support means for updates

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10; the PC continues to work, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. Check Microsoft’s current Windows Update Troubleshooter page for lifecycle details and any applicable enrollment arrangements.
