The safest starting rule is simple: use the lowest setting that picks up the debris without making the vacuum difficult to move. Hard floors usually need less suction than carpet, while carpet often benefits from brush agitation as well as suction. Exact mode names, brush behavior and automatic adjustment differ by vacuum and floorhead, so confirm the procedure in the owner’s manual before applying any setting to a delicate rug or unfamiliar flooring.

Why the “right” setting depends on both the floor and the head

A cordless vacuum does not clean every surface in the same way. Suction lifts loose material into the air path; a powered brushroll agitates fibers and helps release embedded debris; the floorhead controls how air and debris enter the machine. Changing a mode can alter one, two or all three of those behaviors.

That is why a setting that works well on a dense carpet may be unnecessarily forceful on a smooth floor. On hard flooring, dust and crumbs generally remain on top of the surface, so maximum suction is not automatically an advantage. Floorhead design matters: an aggressive brush or poorly sealed head can scatter debris instead of collecting it. On carpet, agitation can be useful, but excessive suction can seal the head to the pile and make the vacuum tiring to push.

Mode labels are not standardized. One model may offer Eco, Auto and Boost; another may use a hard-floor selector, a carpet selector or a slider that releases suction. “Auto” may detect floor type, adjust brush speed, respond to dirt, or combine several behaviors. Treat every label as a model-specific control, not a universal technical definition.

Quick starting points by surface

Situation Practical starting point Checks before and during cleaning
Sealed hard floor Use the model’s hard-floor setting or a supported Auto mode. Start below maximum suction unless the manual says otherwise. Watch for debris scattering, excessive head drag and any instruction to switch off the brushroll or use a soft head.
Low- or medium-pile carpet Use the model’s carpet guidance with brush agitation enabled when specified. Increase suction only as needed for pickup. Check whether the head is difficult to push, whether the brush is rotating as intended and whether the pile maker gives care instructions.
High-pile or plush carpet Follow the manual’s pile-height advice rather than assuming Boost is best. A lower mode may improve maneuverability. Look for a suction-release control, height adjustment or brush setting. Stop if the head pulls, stalls or mats the pile.
Delicate rug Check both the vacuum manual and the rug manufacturer’s instructions before using a powered brush. Confirm whether the brush can be switched off. A brush bar can damage some carpets, so do not test an uncertain setting in the center of the rug.
Unknown or unusual flooring Use the least aggressive compatible setting and test in an inconspicuous area after checking the instructions. Stop for scattering, snagging, visible wear, moisture sensitivity or unusual resistance.
Carpet that is hard to push Reduce suction or use the machine’s airflow/suction release if the manual permits it. Excessive suction may be sealing the floorhead to the carpet; a lower setting can preserve pickup while restoring control.

A step-by-step method that works across cordless models

  1. Identify the surface and its care requirements. Decide whether you are cleaning a sealed hard floor, a low pile, a deep pile, a loose-weave rug or a specialty covering. If the surface has a manufacturer’s care label, use that guidance alongside the vacuum manual.
  2. Read the instructions for the exact floorhead. The same vacuum body can behave differently with a powered multi-surface head, a soft head or a bare suction tool. Find the manual section that names your attachment and surface.
  3. Check what each mode actually changes. Note whether Eco, Auto or Boost changes suction, brushroll speed, brushroll operation, or only the motor’s power. If the manual does not state that Auto detects floor type, do not assume it does.
  4. Begin with a moderate or low compatible setting. Make a few passes in an area with ordinary debris. Starting lower reduces the chance of scattering on hard floors and reduces the risk of a carpet head sticking to the pile.
  5. Evaluate pickup and push effort together. A setting is working when it collects the debris you need without excessive force, wheel chatter, head lift or brush stalling. More suction is not automatically better if it prevents normal movement.
  6. Adjust one control at a time. If pickup is weak, increase suction or enable the brush only when the manual allows it. If the head is hard to move, reduce suction or open the designated release. Changing several controls at once makes the result difficult to interpret.
  7. Recheck when the surface changes. Moving from tile to a rug, or from low pile to plush pile, is a reason to reassess the mode. Do not leave the vacuum in Boost simply because it worked in the previous room.
  8. Stop at signs of damage or abnormal resistance. Snagging, fraying, visible marks, a stalled brush, burning odor or sudden head lock-up calls for stopping and consulting the manual, not for pressing harder.

Choosing a setting for hard floors

Use controlled suction rather than maximum power by default

On tile, sealed wood, laminate and similar smooth surfaces, particles generally sit on top of the floor. That often means a lower or standard mode is sufficient. Maximum suction can add battery drain and noise without improving the result, particularly when the floorhead already seals effectively.

The more important question is whether the head delivers debris into the intake cleanly. If crumbs shoot ahead or sideways, inspect the head’s hard-floor recommendation and brush behavior. Some designs are intended to run with the brushroll off or with a softer brush; others are designed to use a controlled rotating brush. Use the option specified for your model rather than applying a blanket rule to every cordless vacuum.

Prevent scattering

Test a small patch containing visible crumbs. If the roller flicks material away, reduce the brush action if the machine permits it, select the hard-floor setting, or fit the recommended hard-floor head. A higher suction number will not necessarily solve scattering caused by the head’s geometry or brush speed.

Protect vulnerable finishes

Even a sealed floor can be sensitive to grit trapped in a wheel or head. Follow the flooring maker’s care instructions and avoid forcing the vacuum across a finish that shows drag marks. For an unfamiliar surface, use a low setting in an inconspicuous location first.

Choosing a setting for carpet

Balance suction with brush agitation

Carpet can hold dust below the surface, so the manufacturer may specify a powered brush and a stronger mode than it recommends for hard floors. The objective is not the highest available power; it is enough airflow and agitation to lift embedded material while keeping the head maneuverable.

If the vacuum is difficult to push, the head may be sealing to the pile. Use a lower mode or the machine’s suction/airflow release when the manual provides one. Do not defeat a safety feature or improvise a blockage in the air path. A controlled reduction can make repeated passes practical without abandoning brush action.

Account for pile height

Low, medium and high piles can require different brush or suction behavior. A setting suitable for a flat loop may pull aggressively on a plush surface. Look for explicit pile-height guidance, a height selector or a brushroll on/off instruction. When the manual is silent about a particular pile, start conservatively and observe the carpet rather than assuming the most powerful setting is safest.

Watch for brush problems

A brush that stalls, produces unusual resistance or leaves visible tracks is a reason to stop. Check the manual for the correct response and inspect the floorhead only as instructed. A brushroll’s presence does not mean it should run on every carpet; compatibility depends on the covering and the specific head.

Delicate rugs and uncertain coverings

Delicate rugs deserve a separate decision because fiber damage can occur even when suction appears effective. The Dyson DC28 manual, for example, gives different recommendations by carpet pile and floor type and warns that its brush bar can damage some carpets. It advises following the floor-covering manufacturer’s instructions and switching the brush bar off when uncertain. That is guidance for the DC28, not proof that every cordless model has the same control or risk profile.

Before cleaning a fragile or unfamiliar rug:

  • Read the rug or flooring maker’s care instructions.
  • Read the vacuum manual for the exact head, brush setting and pile category.
  • Confirm that the brushroll can actually be switched off if the instructions call for it.
  • Test a hidden edge or small area with the least aggressive compatible setting.
  • Stop if fibers lift, loops catch, the rug shifts or the head resists movement.

If the vacuum cannot provide the control the covering requires, use a non-powered tool or another cleaning method recommended by the covering manufacturer instead of improvising.

When Auto mode is the right choice

Auto is useful only when the model and attached head support the relevant automatic adjustment. Shark’s IW1611 Cordless Detect Pro FAQ says its sensors detect hidden dirt and floor types and automatically adjust suction power and brushroll speed. Dyson support also documents Auto operation on supported models. These examples show that automatic adjustment exists on some machines; they do not establish that every cordless vacuum detects flooring.

  • What the sensors detect: floor type, dirt level, or both.
  • What changes: suction, brushroll speed, brushroll state, or another parameter.
  • Where it works: the specific head, tool and floor categories supported.

Auto can still make a poor choice for a covering that the manufacturer excludes. If a rug maker prohibits powered brushing, select a permitted manual setting or avoid that head. Also observe the result: automatic adjustment is not a substitute for stopping when the head snags or scatters debris.

How to diagnose common setting problems

The vacuum is hard to push on carpet

  • Lower suction one step and test the same area.
  • Use the designated suction or airflow release if the manual permits it.
  • Check whether the selected head is intended for that pile.
  • If resistance remains abnormal, stop and consult the model instructions.

The likely issue is excessive sealing between the head and carpet, but do not assume that without checking the manual and head compatibility.

Debris scatters on a hard floor

  • Switch to the hard-floor mode or supported hard-floor head.
  • Check whether the manual calls for the brushroll to be off or for a soft brush.
  • Try a slower pass and a moderate setting before increasing power.
  • If scattering continues, the head design may be the limiting factor rather than suction.

Pickup is poor on carpet

  • Confirm that the carpet head and brushroll are engaged as specified.
  • Increase suction gradually instead of jumping immediately to maximum.
  • Check pile-height guidance and whether a lower setting is causing the head to ride above the fibers.
  • Stop if the stronger mode makes the head immovable or causes visible stress to the carpet.

The brushroll will not run or keeps stopping

Verify that the selected mode and attachment permit brush operation. Some tools are suction-only, and some surfaces require the brush to be disabled. If the manual’s normal reset procedure does not resolve the behavior, do not continue forcing the head across the floor.

Battery life is much shorter than expected

Runtime changes with power mode, floor type and tool. Dyson support specifically notes those variables. A model-specific Shark FAQ for the IZ202UK/IZ252UK states approximately 12 minutes in floor-mode maximum power; that figure applies to those models and mode conditions, not to cordless vacuums generally. Use the manufacturer’s stated runtime for the exact configuration you own, and expect higher-power carpet cleaning to consume more battery than a lower-power hard-floor pass.

How to compare controls when two vacuums use different labels

Control or behavior Question to ask in the manual Why it affects your choice
Mode names Which modes are actually available on this model and head? Eco, Auto, Boost and floor selectors do not have universal meanings.
Automatic adjustment Does Auto detect floor type, dirt, or both? You need to know whether it will respond to a change from carpet to hard floor.
Brushroll behavior Can the brush be turned off, and does its speed change by mode? Brush action affects embedded carpet debris, scattering and delicate coverings.
Pressure control Is there a suction or airflow release for difficult-to-push carpet? Controlled release can improve maneuverability without abandoning the correct head.
Head compatibility Which attachment is approved for each floor category? The same motor can behave differently with a soft, powered or suction-only tool.
Runtime information Under which mode, tool and floor conditions was runtime measured? Published maximum-power figures are configuration-specific, not universal averages.

A practical room-by-room workflow

Before starting

  • Identify the floor covering in each room and note any delicate or manufacturer-restricted areas.
  • Attach the head recommended for that surface.
  • Confirm the available modes and brush controls for that attachment.
  • Plan the battery around the mode you will actually use, not a headline runtime measured in a different configuration.

During cleaning

  1. Begin on a small representative patch at a moderate setting.
  2. Observe pickup, scattering, push effort and brush behavior.
  3. Change only the setting that addresses the observed problem.
  4. Re-test after crossing a threshold such as a doorway, rug edge or change in pile.
  5. Use Auto only where the manual confirms that the fitted head supports it.

At transitions

Pause when moving between surfaces. A hard-floor head may not be the correct choice for carpet, and a powered carpet head may be inappropriate for a delicate rug. Repeating the short selection process at each transition is faster than repairing a damaged covering or wasting battery on the wrong mode.

The safest decision rule

Choose the model’s surface-specific setting first, then tune power for the result you can observe. On hard floors, prioritize controlled pickup and prevention of scattering. On carpet, preserve the brush action the manual recommends while reducing suction if the head becomes difficult to move. On delicate or uncertain coverings, let the floor-covering maker’s instructions and the exact vacuum manual override general advice.

Because cordless vacuums differ in sensors, heads, brush controls and battery behavior, no single “best” setting exists across all models. The correct setting is the one documented for your attachment and surface that collects the debris without abnormal resistance or damage.
