Choose Free for occasional questions, Pro for regular individual writing, research, coding, or analysis, Max 5x or Max 20x when you repeatedly hit Pro limits, Team for an organization that needs shared administration and at least five seats, and Enterprise when security, compliance, integrations, permissions, or very large context windows justify a sales-led contract. Education is a separate university-wide option. Check the upgrade screen for your country’s currency, taxes, and current feature availability before paying.
Claude plan recommendations at a glance
The right Claude subscription depends on four questions: how often you use Claude, whether one person or an organization owns the account, how much governance you need, and whether your work routinely exceeds the standard usage allowance. The table below gives a starting point before you examine the details.
| Reader situation | Best starting plan | Why it fits | Important watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional personal questions | Free | No subscription fee and access to core chat features | Usage is limited, and access depends on a supported location |
| Regular individual writing, research, coding, or analysis | Pro | More usage, model selection, Projects, Research, priority access, and additional workflow features | Console/API usage is billed separately |
| Daily heavy individual use | Max 5x | Five times Pro usage per session according to Anthropic’s plan guide, with higher output limits | $100 per month is worthwhile only when Pro limits are a recurring problem |
| Claude is central to nearly every work task | Max 20x | Twenty times Pro usage per session according to Anthropic’s plan guide | $200 per month is difficult to justify for occasional or moderate use |
| Small or mid-sized organization needing shared billing | Team | Centralized administration, collaboration features, Projects, Knowledge Bases, and increased usage per user | At least five members are required, and signup guidance requires a business email |
| Regulated, security-sensitive, or large organization | Enterprise | SSO, SCIM, role-based permissions, audit logs, retention controls, compliance API, integrations, and enhanced context | Pricing is not public; contact sales and distinguish standard from premium seats |
What each Claude plan actually provides
Free: a no-cost way to test occasional use
Free is designed for limited, intermittent use. Anthropic lists web, iOS, Android, and desktop access, along with writing and editing, text and image analysis, web search, code generation, data visualization, and desktop extensions. You do not pay a subscription fee, but usage limits can interrupt longer sessions or frequent work.
Free is the sensible starting point if you are still deciding whether Claude belongs in your routine. It lets you test the interface and the kinds of tasks you care about without committing to a monthly charge. It is less suitable when you need predictable access throughout a workday, must select among more models, or depend on a persistent project workspace.

Pro: the normal choice for a regular individual user
Anthropic’s current US guidance lists Pro at $20 per month when billed monthly. The pricing page also shows an annual option equivalent to $17 per month, billed as $200 up front for the year. The annual figure is an effective rate, not a monthly invoice; paying $200 rather than twelve $20 payments saves $40 over a full year if you keep the subscription for all twelve months.
Pro includes more usage than Free, model selection, priority access, Projects, knowledge bases, Research, Google Workspace connections, remote MCP connections, extended thinking, and access to more models. Anthropic’s Pro help guidance says the plan provides at least five times the usage per session compared with Free. The pricing page also lists Claude Code access for Pro.
Pro is a good fit when Claude supports recurring writing, research, coding, document analysis, or planning but is not running every task you perform. It is also the first paid plan to consider when Free’s limits are disrupting work. The allowance is still not unlimited, and the exact experience can vary with traffic, model choice, message length, and the type of work you submit.

Max 5x and Max 20x: higher individual capacity
Max is aimed at people using Claude throughout the day or for most tasks. Anthropic’s plan-selection guide lists Max 5x at $100 per month and Max 20x at $200 per month. The pricing description says Max provides five times or twenty times more usage per session than Pro, respectively, along with higher output limits, early access to advanced features, and priority access during high traffic.
Max 5x is the logical escalation when you like Pro but regularly run into its usage ceiling. Max 20x is intended for a workflow in which Claude is present in nearly every major task and the lower Max tier still causes interruptions. Neither tier should be treated as an unlimited-use promise: Anthropic can apply additional usage limits, and practical capacity depends on the model and workload.
Team: shared administration for at least five people
Team is an organization account rather than an individual upgrade. Anthropic lists $25 per person per month with annual billing or $30 per person per month with monthly billing, and requires a minimum of five members. At the minimum size, that is $125 per month on annual billing (with the annual commitment) or $150 per month when billed monthly, before any applicable local taxes.
Team adds increased usage per user, centralized billing and administration, Projects, Knowledge Bases, early collaboration features, and other collaboration capabilities. Anthropic’s Team help article documents a 200,000-token context window. Signup guidance cited by Anthropic requires a business email; public email domains are not accepted in that guidance.

Team is appropriate when a group needs one administrative surface and shared workspaces but does not yet need enterprise identity controls, auditability, or a negotiated security package. Confirm the current treatment of Claude Code and any other developer features at checkout, because plan inclusions can change.
Enterprise: governance, controls, integrations, and larger context
Enterprise pricing is contact-sales rather than a public monthly list price. It includes Team capabilities plus SSO and domain capture, just-in-time provisioning, role-based permissioning, audit logs, SCIM, custom retention controls, a compliance API, increased usage, native data-source integrations such as GitHub, and enhanced context.
Anthropic’s Enterprise documentation specifies a 500,000-token context window with Claude Sonnet 4. It lists a standard 200,000-token context window with Claude Opus 4.1, Opus 4, or Sonnet 3.7. These figures are model-specific, so do not assume that every Enterprise model accepts 500,000 tokens.
Enterprise has standard and premium seat concepts. Standard seats provide core Enterprise features. Premium seats add Claude Code and higher usage, so a company should estimate how many developers or heavy users actually need those additions instead of assigning premium seats to everyone automatically.

Anthropic also presents an Education plan for universities, with student and faculty access, discounted rates, academic research and learning mode, API credits, and training resources. The reviewed plan material does not provide a public price. Institutions should request current terms rather than infer a per-user cost from Pro, Team, or Enterprise.
How to choose a plan for personal use
Start with frequency, not the feature checklist
Ask how often Claude is part of your actual week. If you use it a few times for questions or occasional image and text analysis, Free is usually enough. If you use it for recurring writing, research, coding, or analysis and want fewer interruptions, Pro is the sensible baseline. If you use Claude for most of the workday, compare Max tiers instead of repeatedly fighting Pro limits.
- Occasional use: begin with Free and upgrade only after a specific limit affects a real task.
- Several sessions each week: Pro’s higher allowance, Projects, Research, model selection, and priority access usually provide the best balance.
- Heavy daily use: Max 5x is the first capacity upgrade to evaluate.
- Claude as a primary work surface: consider Max 20x only when interruptions persist at Max 5x or Pro is consistently inadequate.
Use a recurring-limit test before buying Max
Do not choose Max because a single unusually long conversation exhausted Pro. Track interruptions for a representative week. Note the model, the number and size of messages, whether you were working with large files, and whether the limit prevented a deadline-sensitive task. A recurring pattern is evidence for Max; an isolated spike may be better handled by shorter conversations, a new Project, or a different model.

Decide whether annual Pro billing matches your commitment
Monthly Pro billing is $20 in the United States according to Anthropic’s current guidance. The annual option is $200 paid up front, equivalent to $16.67 per month over twelve months and displayed as $17 per month. Annual billing is cheaper over a full year, but monthly billing preserves flexibility if you are testing Claude or expect your usage to change.

| Plan | US price in Anthropic’s current guide | Relative usage statement | Best match | Value warning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro monthly | $20 per month | At least 5x Free usage per session in the Pro help guidance | Regular individual productivity | Not an API bundle; limits still apply |
| Pro annual | $200 billed up front, shown as $17 per month | Same Pro feature and usage level as the monthly plan | Someone confident they will use Pro for a year | Up-front commitment; verify taxes and local currency |
| Max 5x | $100 per month | 5x Pro usage per session in the plan-selection guide | Heavy individual use | Five times the price of monthly Pro |
| Max 20x | $200 per month | 20x Pro usage per session in the plan-selection guide | Claude is central to nearly every task | Ten times the price of monthly Pro; still subject to additional limits |
Max 5x costs five times monthly Pro, while Max 20x costs ten times monthly Pro. That premium is buying capacity and higher output limits, not a guarantee that every answer is better or that every model is available without restrictions. If your work is limited by answer quality, model suitability, or a need for organizational controls, a higher personal allowance may not solve the real problem.
How to choose between Team and Enterprise
Choose Team when administration is the main requirement
Team is the practical fit for a group that wants centralized billing, member management, shared Projects or Knowledge Bases, and more usage per user. The five-member minimum is decisive: a two- or three-person company cannot buy only two Team seats under the stated requirement. It must either begin with individual plans or meet the minimum, then reassess whether the administrative benefits justify that commitment.
Use a business email during signup. Anthropic’s cited guidance says public email domains are not accepted, so a personal mailbox can block registration even when the organization is legitimate.
Choose Enterprise when control, evidence, or integration matters
Enterprise becomes the better fit when an administrator must enforce identity and access policies, prove how accounts are managed, control retention, investigate activity, or connect Claude to governed data sources. SSO, domain capture, just-in-time provisioning, role-based permissions, SCIM, audit logs, custom retention controls, and a compliance API address requirements that Team is not documented as providing.
Enterprise is also the plan to evaluate when context size is a material workflow constraint. The documented 500,000-token window applies to Claude Sonnet 4, while the listed Opus 4.1, Opus 4, and Sonnet 3.7 models have a standard 200,000-token context window. Ask sales which models, seats, limits, retention settings, and integrations are included in the proposed contract.
Budget by seat type, not just by employee count
Enterprise’s standard seats cover core features, while premium seats add Claude Code and higher usage. A company with many occasional users and a smaller engineering group may need mostly standard seats plus premium seats for developers. Request a seat-level quote so the subscription reflects actual usage rather than assigning the most expensive tier to every employee.

Usage limits, context windows, and workflow scale
Usage capacity is not the same as context length
Usage capacity describes how much you can use a plan over its session or account allowance. Context length describes how much text a model can consider in one conversation or request. A plan can provide more sessions without giving every model the same context window. Team’s documented 200,000-token context and Enterprise’s model-specific 500,000-token or 200,000-token figures illustrate why these terms should be evaluated separately.
Large context does not remove file and model constraints
Even with a large context window, the result depends on the selected model, the size and format of uploaded material, the complexity of the instruction, and the output limit. For a long contract, codebase, or research archive, verify the exact model and seat capability you will use rather than relying on the plan name alone.
Prioritize predictable access when deadlines matter
Pro includes priority access, and Max is described as receiving priority access during high traffic. Team and Enterprise provide higher organizational allowances, while Enterprise adds controls for provisioning and administration. If an interruption would delay a client deliverable, weigh predictable access and administrative recovery more heavily than a low headline price.
Chat subscriptions, Claude Code, and API billing are separate decisions
A Claude chat subscription does not automatically include Console API usage. Pro specifically does not include Console API usage, so an application, automation, or internal tool can create a separate bill even when the developer already pays for Pro.
Claude Code treatment varies by plan and can change. The pricing page lists Claude Code access for Pro, while Enterprise documentation describes it as a premium-seat addition. Team’s current treatment should be verified at purchase. Do not assume that paying for a chat seat supplies unlimited API requests, shared application credentials, or identical developer entitlements for every member.
- Chat subscription: access to Claude’s consumer or organization chat experience under the selected plan.
- Console/API: separate usage and billing for programmatic requests.
- Claude Code: a developer workflow whose availability and usage treatment should be checked for the exact plan and seat type.
How to buy, upgrade, or size a plan safely
- List your real users and tasks. Separate occasional readers, regular knowledge workers, developers, and administrators. Record which people need shared workspaces, higher usage, or Claude Code.
- Check the current upgrade and pricing screens. Confirm local currency, taxes, annual versus monthly billing, model availability, usage language, and any regional eligibility limits. Prices and included features can change.
- Start at the lowest plan that satisfies the requirement. Use Free for occasional personal work, Pro for regular individual work, Team for an eligible group of at least five, and Enterprise when governance or scale is essential.
- Measure interruptions for a normal work period. Record how often limits block a task, which model you were using, and whether the issue is capacity, context length, or a missing administrative feature.
- Upgrade only the constrained dimension. A heavy individual user may need Max; a company needing SSO may need Enterprise; an API project needs Console billing rather than a larger chat subscription.
- Recheck seat allocation after the first billing cycle. On Team or Enterprise, compare actual usage with assigned seats and move premium capabilities to the users who need them.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying Max to solve an organization problem
Max is a personal capacity plan. It does not replace Team or Enterprise administration, domain controls, audit logs, SCIM, retention policies, or compliance features. If the requirement comes from security, procurement, or IT, evaluate an organization plan instead of stacking personal Max subscriptions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Assuming Pro includes API credits
It does not. Pro’s chat allowance and Console/API usage are separate. Budget API requests independently and monitor that account’s consumption.

Confusing “unlimited” marketing language with unlimited availability
Max is described with much higher usage, not an unconditional promise that every request is always available. Additional limits can apply. Plan for normal capacity and keep a fallback workflow for deadline-sensitive work.
Ignoring the Team minimum
Team requires at least five members. A small organization should calculate the minimum monthly commitment before inviting users and should not assume that one Team seat can be purchased for a solo founder.
Using a public email domain for Team signup
Anthropic’s cited signup guidance rejects public email domains. Use the organization’s business domain or confirm eligibility with Anthropic before planning a Team rollout.

Practical plan choices for common situations
Student or hobbyist who asks a few questions each week
Start with Free. Upgrade to Pro if usage limits interrupt study sessions, writing projects, or repeated analysis often enough to justify a monthly fee. Education may be relevant only when a university is arranging institution-wide access; the public material does not state a student self-service price.
Freelance writer, analyst, or developer working most days
Pro is the default starting point because it combines a larger allowance with Projects, Research, model selection, priority access, and other workflow features. Move to Max 5x after documenting recurring limits rather than upgrading because one project is unusually large.
Software professional using Claude for nearly every work task
Compare Max 5x and Max 20x against the cost of interruptions. If Pro limits repeatedly stop coding, analysis, or drafting and Claude is central to the workday, Max can be rational. Verify Claude Code’s treatment for your plan, and keep API costs separate if you are building software.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Five- to fifty-person company sharing internal work
Team is the first organization plan to evaluate when centralized billing, member administration, Projects, Knowledge Bases, and collaboration are the main needs. Confirm that every invitee uses an eligible business email and budget at least five members.
Regulated company with identity and audit requirements
Start an Enterprise conversation. Ask for written details on SSO, SCIM, role permissions, audit logs, retention controls, compliance API access, data-source integrations, context windows by model, and the difference between standard and premium seats.
A final decision checklist
- Do you need an individual subscription or an organization account?
- How often do limits interrupt a normal week, not an exceptional project?
- Is your bottleneck usage capacity, context length, model access, or governance?
- Will you need Console/API billing in addition to chat?
- For Team, can you commit to at least five members and use a business email?
- For Enterprise, which users need premium seats for Claude Code or higher usage?
- Have you checked local currency, tax, annual commitment, and current feature availability?
For most people, the decision is straightforward: Free for occasional use, Pro for regular personal productivity, Max 5x or Max 20x only when higher individual capacity is repeatedly necessary, Team for an eligible group that needs shared administration, and Enterprise when governance or scale is the reason to buy. Revisit the choice when your workload, team size, or compliance requirements change.
