Start with Instant for ordinary questions, quick drafts, summaries, and routine planning. Switch to a reasoning option when the task has several steps, competing constraints, or a meaningful risk of mistakes. Use Pro only for unusually difficult or long-running work when your plan offers it and the extra allowance is justified. The exact names and availability depend on your account, plan, and workspace.

OpenAI’s current ChatGPT guide describes GPT-6 as replacing the former “Latest” choice as it rolls out to eligible users. With GPT-6 selected, you may see Instant, Medium, High, and Extra High effort levels for GPT-6 Sol, plus Pro for GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra. Free and Go accounts receive GPT-5.6 Luna and can select Think for harder questions. Your own model picker is the final authority because rollout and administrator controls vary.

What the current ChatGPT choices mean

Model selection is primarily a trade-off between response speed, reasoning effort, access eligibility, and usage allowance. There is no independently established model that wins every everyday task. OpenAI’s descriptions support choosing by task difficulty rather than treating one option as universally best.

Choice you may see How OpenAI describes it Best starting point Important qualification
Instant Fast responses for everyday questions Routine questions, quick explanations, simple drafts, and straightforward planning Available labels and access can vary by plan and rollout.
Medium Standard thinking effort within GPT-6 Sol Tasks that need more structure than a quick answer but do not justify extended reasoning Shown only where GPT-6 and this effort control are available.
High Extended thinking within GPT-6 Sol Multi-step analysis, difficult decisions, and work with several constraints Higher effort can use more of your allowance and take longer.
Extra High The highest GPT-6 Sol effort level described in the guide Particularly demanding analysis when the option is offered Not every account or workspace receives this control.
Pro GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, for difficult or longer-running workflows Large, complex, or sustained work where the additional allowance is worthwhile Plan eligibility, workspace policy, and remaining allowance determine access.
Think A harder-question mode for GPT-5.6 Luna Free and Go users who need more reasoning than a routine chat Free and Go accounts receive GPT-5.6 Luna; tool limits are separate from text-chat limits.

OpenAI’s March 17, 2026 release note uses the phrases “Instant – fast responses for everyday questions,” “deeper reasoning for more complex tasks” for Thinking, and “the most advanced reasoning models” for Pro. Those descriptions are useful orientation, not a promise that every response will be better or that every account will expose the same controls.

A quick decision rule

Use this sequence before opening a new chat:

  1. Classify the task. If you need a normal explanation, a short rewrite, a list of ideas, or a quick calculation, begin with Instant.
  2. Look for complexity. If the request involves several dependent steps, conflicting requirements, code that must work across cases, or a decision with substantial consequences, choose a reasoning option available to you. Free and Go users can select Think for harder questions.
  3. Reserve the top tier. Consider Pro only for unusually difficult or long-running workflows, and only when your account offers it and the extra allowance is worth the slower, heavier interaction.
  4. Check the allowance before a long session. ChatGPT displays usage or reset information for some higher-effort choices. Inspect that information before committing to a large project.
  5. Escalate when the first answer exposes a problem. If an Instant response is incomplete, internally inconsistent, or unable to follow all constraints, continue the same prompt in a reasoning mode rather than repeatedly rephrasing it at the same setting.

When Instant is the right choice

Routine factual questions

Instant is the sensible default for a question with a clear scope and a short path to an answer: defining a term, explaining a familiar setting, converting units, outlining a basic process, or comparing two options whose criteria you have already supplied. Its purpose is speed for everyday questions, so it avoids spending extra reasoning allowance on a problem that does not need it.

Quick writing and editing

Use Instant for a first draft of an email, a concise meeting agenda, headline alternatives, a grammar cleanup, or a tone change. Give it the audience, length, tone, and facts that must remain unchanged. If the task is only to transform supplied text, higher effort usually adds less value than a precise prompt.

Simple planning

Instant can create a short packing list, a basic meal outline, a beginner study schedule, or a sequence of errands. State your fixed constraints—time, budget, location, dietary requirement, or equipment—so the model does not fill gaps with assumptions. Move up a level when the plan has many dependencies or when missing one constraint would make the result unusable.

Fast iteration

When you are brainstorming names, exploring alternative wording, or asking follow-up questions while learning a familiar subject, response speed may matter more than maximum analysis. Instant lets you test several prompt variations quickly. Treat the output as a draft and verify consequential facts independently.

When to choose a reasoning option

Multi-step analysis

Choose Medium, High, Extra High, or Think when the answer depends on a chain of steps rather than a single transformation. Examples include reconciling requirements, finding edge cases in a proposed process, explaining why a spreadsheet result is wrong, or evaluating several options against a weighted checklist. Tell the model to show assumptions and check its conclusion against every requirement.

Competing constraints

A reasoning setting is useful when you need the cheapest option that still meets a deadline, a schedule that avoids conflicts, or a technical design that balances security, maintenance, and performance. Put the constraints in a numbered list and identify which ones are non-negotiable. Higher effort helps the model work through the relationships, but you still need to inspect the result.

Long documents and structured synthesis

For a policy, contract, requirements document, or set of notes, ask for a structured output: a table of obligations, a list of open questions, or a decision memo with evidence and uncertainty. Reasoning is most useful when the model must connect information from different sections. Upload and analysis limits are separate from ordinary text-chat limits, so check the allowance shown for your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Code and technical troubleshooting

Use a reasoning option when code has multiple interacting files, a bug appears only under certain conditions, or a fix must preserve compatibility. Include the exact error, runtime or language version, expected behavior, actual behavior, and a minimal reproducible example. Ask for a proposed diagnosis, a patch, and tests that would distinguish competing explanations. Do not treat a plausible explanation as proof that the code is safe.

When Pro is justified

Pro is intended for difficult or longer-running workflows and uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, according to the current guide. It is not a default upgrade for every question. Consider it when all three conditions apply:

  • The task is unusually complex, sustained, or costly to redo.
  • A reasoning option below Pro has not provided enough progress or is not available.
  • Your plan exposes Pro and the allowance is sufficient for the complete workflow.

Examples include a large, interdependent technical design, a lengthy analysis that must preserve many constraints, or a project requiring several rounds of critique and revision. For a one-paragraph answer, a quick rewrite, or a simple lookup, Pro adds unnecessary cost in time or allowance. OpenAI’s description is a product-positioning guide, not an independent benchmark proving that Pro is superior for every category of work.

How to select a model in ChatGPT

  1. Open the model picker in your ChatGPT conversation. The control may appear at the top of a new chat or in the conversation header; labels can change during the GPT-6 rollout.
  2. Read the choices your account actually shows. If GPT-6 is available, you may see Instant, Medium, High, Extra High, or Pro. If you are on Free or Go, you may see GPT-5.6 Luna with Think for harder questions.
  3. Choose the lowest setting that matches the task. Start with Instant for routine work, then move to a reasoning option when the task has several steps or the first answer reveals gaps.
  4. Review any allowance or reset indicator. Thinking and Pro allowances depend on plan, model, and workspace. A displayed limit is more reliable than a general rule because it reflects your current account.
  5. Run a small trial before a long workflow. Ask for a short outline or diagnosis first. If the approach is sound, continue; if not, change the effort level or clarify the prompt before uploading more material.

Interface names and placement are volatile. Do not assume that a choice has been removed merely because it is absent from one device or conversation; eligibility and workspace policy can change what is displayed.

Plan, workspace, and limit differences

Free and Go accounts

OpenAI says Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna and can select Think for harder questions. Everyday text chats are described as unlimited subject to safeguards, but file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools have separate limits. “Unlimited” therefore does not mean unlimited access to every capability or unlimited use without safeguards.

Eligible paid accounts

GPT-6 is rolling out to eligible paid accounts. With GPT-6 selected, the guide describes several GPT-6 Sol effort levels and a separate Pro option, but the exact combination depends on plan and availability. Check the picker and allowance display in your account instead of relying on a list published for a different plan or date.

Business and Enterprise workspaces

Workspace administrators may control model access in Business and Enterprise. If a model is missing in a managed workspace, the restriction may be an administrator setting rather than a personal account problem. Ask the administrator which models and effort levels are enabled before changing plans or rebuilding a workflow.

Allowance planning

Thinking and Pro usage depends on the plan, selected model, and workspace. Before a long analysis, note the displayed allowance and reset time. Batch related questions into one well-specified task when that improves coherence, but do not force unrelated work into a single prompt merely to conserve messages; unclear scope can create rework.

A practical model-by-task map

Everyday task Recommended starting choice Move to a higher-effort option when Prompt detail that helps
Explain a concept Instant You need competing interpretations, technical nuance, or a long source synthesis. Audience, prior knowledge, desired length, and examples to include.
Rewrite or summarize supplied text Instant The document is long, internally inconsistent, or governed by many style rules. Preserve facts, target audience, tone, length, and forbidden changes.
Brainstorm ideas Instant Ideas must satisfy a detailed scoring framework or legal, safety, or technical constraints. Number of ideas, criteria, exclusions, and how to rank results.
Plan a project Medium or Think when available Tasks have dependencies, resource conflicts, or significant consequences. Deadline, resources, dependencies, assumptions, and fallback paths.
Debug code Medium or High The bug spans modules, is intermittent, or requires a compatibility-preserving redesign. Exact error, environment, reproduction steps, expected result, and recent changes.
Analyze a large set of notes High or Extra High The work is lengthy, highly constrained, or expensive to repeat. Source boundaries, required output schema, uncertainty labels, and validation checks.

How to get better results at any setting

State the job before the background

Begin with the outcome you need: “Give me a three-step diagnosis,” “Return a table,” or “Rewrite this for a nontechnical reader.” Then provide the facts and constraints. A clear task lets Instant answer quickly and gives reasoning modes a defined target.

Separate facts from assumptions

Mark information as confirmed, estimated, or unknown. Ask the model to identify missing inputs rather than silently inventing them. This is especially important for budgets, schedules, technical compatibility, and decisions with legal, financial, health, or safety implications.

Request a check, not hidden reasoning

Ask for assumptions, a concise rationale, edge cases, and a verification checklist. You do not need an unbounded internal monologue; you need an auditable result and a way to test it.

Use staged escalation

Start with a small version of the task. If the outline, diagnosis, or criteria are correct, ask the same conversation to expand it using a higher-effort option if needed. This limits wasted allowance and exposes misunderstandings before they become embedded in a long output.

What to do when the model you want is missing

  1. Confirm which account and workspace you are using, especially if you have both personal and managed access.
  2. Check your plan’s model eligibility and the allowance or reset information displayed in ChatGPT.
  3. Look for a rollout difference: GPT-6 availability is being introduced to eligible paid accounts rather than appearing everywhere at once.
  4. If you are in Business or Enterprise, ask the workspace administrator whether model access is restricted.
  5. Use the closest available option instead of delaying a routine task. For example, Free and Go users can use Think for harder questions even when GPT-6 choices are not shown.
  6. Recheck later if the guide or picker indicates a staged rollout. Model names, controls, and limits can change.

Common selection mistakes

Choosing the strongest label for every prompt

“Pro” is not synonymous with “best for everything.” A quick rewrite does not become more useful merely because it consumed a higher allowance. Match effort to the cost of being wrong and the complexity of the work.

Assuming a missing option is an error

Plan eligibility, rollout status, and administrator controls can all change the picker. Verify those conditions before troubleshooting the app or changing subscriptions.

Confusing text-chat access with tool access

Free and Go text chats may be unlimited subject to safeguards, while uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools have separate limits. Select a model and tool combination that your account can actually use for the task.

Treating a model description as a benchmark

OpenAI’s labels describe intended use and relative effort. They do not establish a universal winner for every everyday question. Check important outputs against source material, calculations, tests, or qualified professional advice as appropriate.

Keeping your choice current

The guide accessed on October 13, 2026 describes an active GPT-6 rollout, separate GPT-5.6 Sol selections, and changing plan controls. Revisit the model picker and allowance display when starting a major project, after a plan or workspace change, or when a familiar option disappears. For a routine question, the durable rule remains simple: begin with Instant; escalate to a reasoning choice for multi-step complexity; reserve Pro for genuinely difficult or long-running work when your account offers it.
