Choose a side-by-side refrigerator in this order: measure the complete delivery route and kitchen opening, confirm door-swing and ventilation clearances, then select enough interior capacity for your shopping and cooking habits. A refrigerator can have the right cubic-foot capacity and still be too tall, deep, wide or difficult to bring into the room.

Start with the opening, not the capacity

The most useful specification is the exact model’s installation drawing. Before comparing shelves, ice makers or cubic feet, measure the space and route the appliance must use. GE Appliances describes height to the top of the hinge, width and case depth without the handle as key side-by-side fit measurements. Your own measurements must also account for handles, doors, hinge covers, trim, baseboards and countertop overhangs.

Capacity describes interior storage volume. Width, height and depth describe the outside of the cabinet and doors. They answer different questions, so do not assume that a refrigerator with enough cubic feet will fit your kitchen.

What size side-by-side refrigerator do you need?

Use household habits as the primary guide

There is no reliable capacity formula based only on the number of people in a home. Shopping frequency, bulk purchases, meal preparation, entertaining and the amount of frozen food you keep can matter more than household size.

  • A household that shops several times a week and cooks from fresh ingredients may need less total volume than its headcount suggests.
  • Bulk buyers need room for large packages and duplicate staples, even when only one person lives in the home.
  • Meal-preppers need space for prepared containers, while people who eat out often may need less refrigerator space.
  • Hosts should allow additional room for drinks, platters and ingredients before gatherings.
  • Side-by-side models divide the cabinet vertically, so wide trays, sheet pans and large pizzas may be harder to store than their total cubic-foot number implies.

How the published rules of thumb fit

GE Appliances says a typical family of four is likely to be fine with a refrigerator measuring 25 cubic feet or more. GE also cautions that judging space from a capacity guide alone is challenging. Treat 25 cubic feet as a broad manufacturer rule of thumb, not a minimum requirement or guarantee.

ENERGY STAR consumer guidance identifies 16–20 cubic feet as the typical range of the most energy-efficient refrigerator models. That is an efficiency-oriented observation, not a recommendation that every household choose a refrigerator in that range. A larger household or a bulk shopper may reasonably need more space, while a smaller household may prefer a compact model.

Capacity is not the same as usable space

Manufacturers report total interior volume, but shelves, bins, ice makers, water filters and the freezer divider determine how much food you can actually organize. Compare the refrigerator and freezer portions separately when specifications provide them. Check shelf adjustability and the width of the usable shelves if you regularly store wide containers.

Do not calculate practical storage by multiplying the outside width, height and depth. Whirlpool notes that there is no hard-and-fast rule behind “small,” “medium” and “large” refrigerator labels. When comparing finished products, use each manufacturer’s stated capacity and interior layout.

Typical external dimensions for side-by-side models

Whirlpool’s published screening ranges for side-by-side refrigerators are shown below. They describe typical external dimensions, not a fit guarantee.

Measurement Published rough range What to verify on the exact model
Width 30 to 39¾ inches Cabinet width, door and handle protrusion, and space needed beside adjacent walls or cabinets
Height 68 to 71¼ inches Height to the top of the hinge and the lowest obstruction above the opening
Depth 23 to 31⅛ inches Case depth, depth with doors and handles, and the counter or cabinet line

These ranges vary by manufacturer and model. A “counter-depth” description also does not eliminate the need to check the doors, handles, hinges and required ventilation space.

How to measure your kitchen opening

Measure before you shortlist models, and repeat each measurement. Record the smallest usable dimension rather than the most generous point.

  1. Measure height. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction at the front, middle and back of the opening. Include a cabinet bottom, molding, light fixture or other object above the refrigerator. Compare this with the model’s height to the top of the hinge, not only its case height.
  2. Measure width at several heights. Measure near the floor, countertop level and the top of the opening. Walls and cabinets may not be parallel. Account for baseboards, trim and any raised edge that narrows the opening.
  3. Measure depth. Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the counter or cabinet. Note outlets, water connections, gas lines and baseboards that prevent the cabinet from sitting fully back.
  4. Record the front projection you can accept. Compare the case depth, door depth and handle depth separately. A refrigerator may fit inside the opening while its doors project into a walkway.
  5. Check the hinge side and door swing. Identify which door must open toward a wall, island or cabinet. Confirm the manufacturer’s required opening angle and the distance needed to remove bins or shelves.
  6. Check overhead and side service space. Installation instructions may require room to level the cabinet, connect water and power, remove doors or perform maintenance.
  7. Mark the final footprint on the floor. Use tape to show the cabinet, door arc and handle projection. Walk through the area with doors open to expose conflicts with an island, table or passage.
  8. Save the model’s installation guide. Use the exact guide for final clearances, leveling, connection locations and any door-removal procedure. General dimension ranges cannot replace model-specific instructions.

GE Appliances summarizes the risk this way: “A common misconception is that any refrigerator will fit the space you currently have, but measuring height, depth and width are just the beginning.”

Allow clearance for ventilation and doors

Ventilation clearance is model-specific

A refrigerator needs space for airflow and connections, not just a matching closed-box footprint. The installation manual may specify different gaps at the rear, sides and top depending on the condenser and cabinet design.

Samsung’s installation guidance, for example, calls for at least 1 inch behind the refrigerator for ventilation and connections, 3/8 inch at both sides and the top for installation, and at least 2.5 inches on the wall side where an open door could contact the wall. Those are Samsung’s stated minimums for its guidance; they are not universal side-by-side requirements. Follow the manual for the model you buy.

Open-door space can be larger than the appliance width

GE notes that many refrigerators need a 90-degree or wider opening to access bins. A wall or island can stop a door before it reaches that angle, leaving a usable-looking refrigerator difficult to load or clean. Check both doors, the handles and the path of pull-out bins. Also make sure an open door does not block a required walkway or strike another appliance.

Plan cleaning and service access

Leave enough room to pull the unit forward, clean behind it and disconnect water or power when the installation guide requires it. Tight cabinetry can make a routine filter change or repair unnecessarily difficult.

Measure the delivery route before ordering

An appliance that fits the kitchen opening may not fit through the home. Measure the complete route from the delivery vehicle’s entrance to the final position:

  • Exterior and interior door openings, including the frame and threshold.
  • Hallways, stairwells and elevator doors.
  • Turns where the refrigerator must be tilted or rotated.
  • Narrow passages beside railings, walls or built-in cabinets.
  • Ceiling height on stairs and at doorway turns.

Compare these measurements with the packaged and unpackaged dimensions supplied by the seller or manufacturer. Ask the delivery company whether doors must be removed and whether that work is included. Do not rely on the refrigerator’s advertised cabinet width alone.

A practical capacity decision process

1. Estimate your weekly inventory

Think about the largest normal load, not an unusually empty refrigerator. Count the space used by fresh produce, dairy, drinks, prepared meals, leftovers and frozen food. If you shop monthly, buy warehouse-sized packages or freeze seasonal food, plan for that peak load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Separate fresh and frozen priorities

Side-by-side cabinets provide vertical access to both sections, but the freezer’s narrow shelves can limit bulky items. If you freeze large containers or pizzas, inspect freezer shelf width and bin dimensions rather than relying on total capacity.

3. Apply the household-size guidance carefully

Use GE’s 25-cubic-foot-or-more figure as a starting point for a typical family of four, then adjust for shopping and cooking habits. A one-person household that bulk-buys or hosts may need more; a larger household that shops frequently and keeps little food on hand may need less.

4. Reject models that fail the opening test

Capacity cannot compensate for a refrigerator that cannot clear the hinge, door swing, route or ventilation requirements. Eliminate non-fitting models before comparing features.

5. Compare usable layout among the survivors

Read the interior diagrams and specifications. Look for adjustable shelves, door-bin depth, drawer placement, ice-maker location and the amount of freezer space. Two models with the same total cubic feet can store different kinds of food.

How to compare two or more models that fit

Comparison point Questions to answer
Capacity What is the total volume, and how is it divided between fresh-food and freezer sections?
Exterior fit What are the width, height to hinge, case depth, door depth and handle depth?
Door operation How far must each door open, and will a wall, cabinet or island stop it?
Installation What rear, side and top clearances, leveling steps and connection locations does the manual require?
Delivery Will the packaged and unpackaged refrigerator pass every doorway, turn and stair?
Energy What model-specific energy information is listed, and does the model carry the desired certification?
Space-affecting features How much interior room is occupied by an ice maker, dispenser, filter housing or other hardware?

Through-door ice and water can affect both usable storage and energy use, but the effect depends on the design. Verify the individual model’s specifications instead of assuming every dispenser has the same impact.

Consider energy use alongside capacity

ENERGY STAR states, “Generally, the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption.” Its consumer guidance also says top-freezer models tend to use less energy than side-by-side models. These are broad comparisons, not a prediction of a particular household’s bill.

ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator criteria depend on configuration, size, defrost type and ice-maker configuration. For refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers of at least 7.75 cubic feet, the criteria page says a certified model must use 10% less measured energy than federal minimum standards. Certification is a useful screening signal, but compare the specific model’s energy information and features as well.

When two models provide enough storage and fit the same opening, compare their certified status and model-specific energy data before choosing the larger cabinet simply because it offers more capacity.

Worked example: reading a real specification listing

An ENERGY STAR listing for the Hamilton Beach HBF2064/HZ4602 identifies a side-by-side refrigerator with 20.7 cubic feet of total volume, a height of 70.1 inches and a width of 35.9 inches. The listing reported market availability and certification on November 5, 2024, for the United States and Canada.

Listing detail Reported value How to use it
Configuration Side-by-side Confirms the cabinet type being compared
Total capacity 20.7 cubic feet Compare with your inventory and with the fresh/freezer split if supplied
Height 70.1 inches Check against the smallest measured opening and hinge clearance
Width 35.9 inches Check at several opening heights, including trim and side clearance
Certification and date ENERGY STAR listing; certified November 5, 2024 Use as a certification and specification example, not as a claim about current stock or price

The example shows why capacity and exterior dimensions must be reviewed together. It does not establish whether that model is available from a particular retailer or suitable for any individual kitchen.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by cubic feet alone

Total volume does not reveal shelf width, door-bin layout or dispenser space. Read the interior specifications and inspect the fresh-food/freezer allocation.

Measuring only the old refrigerator

Your existing unit may have a different hinge height, handle projection or clearance requirement. Measure the opening and compare it with the new model’s installation drawing.

Using the widest point as the opening size

Cabinets, walls and floors can be out of square. Use the smallest height, width and depth measurements and identify obstructions at each point.

Ignoring open-door clearance

A refrigerator can slide into the opening yet fail to open far enough for bins or drawers. Mark the door arcs and check the manufacturer’s required opening angle.

Forgetting the route

Measure doors, turns and stairs before purchase. Confirm packaged dimensions and delivery procedures, not just the cabinet dimensions shown in a product card.

Treating one manufacturer’s clearance as a universal rule

The Samsung figures are an example of model-specific guidance. Other designs may require different spaces, so the exact installation manual controls.

Choosing more capacity than your habits require

Extra volume can increase energy use and may waste kitchen space. ENERGY STAR’s guidance that larger refrigerators generally consume more energy is a reason to size the cabinet to your real inventory rather than selecting the largest model that fits.

Final pre-order checklist

  • Smallest opening height measured to the lowest obstruction.
  • Opening width measured at the floor, counter and top.
  • Depth checked against cabinets, counters, baseboards, outlets and connections.
  • Hinge height, doors and handles included in the comparison.
  • Door swing and 90-degree access checked beside walls and islands.
  • Ventilation, leveling and service clearances taken from the exact installation manual.
  • Complete delivery route measured, including turns and stairs.
  • Total capacity matched to shopping, bulk-buying, meal-prep and hosting habits.
  • Fresh-food and freezer allocations checked separately.
  • Model-specific energy information and certification compared with other fitting models.

Bottom line

Measure first, shortlist only refrigerators that clear the opening, route, ventilation and door-swing tests, and then choose capacity from your actual food-storage habits. Use published figures such as GE’s 25-cubic-foot rule of thumb for a typical family of four, ENERGY STAR’s 16–20-cubic-foot efficiency range and Whirlpool’s external dimension ranges as starting points—not guarantees. The exact model’s dimensions, installation guide, interior layout and energy data decide whether it is the right refrigerator for your kitchen.
