Choose the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want Bose’s most complete feature set, including CustomTune, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode, multipoint Bluetooth and up to 30 hours of claimed battery life. Choose the standard QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want the newer, less expensive design with TrueSpatial modes and USB-C audio up to 24-bit/48 kHz. Consider the earlier QuietComfort Headphones only when its live price is substantially lower and you do not need USB-C audio.

The right choice depends less on the name “QuietComfort” than on how you listen: airplane noise, office awareness, video dialogue, wired playback, battery endurance, controls and the phone or computer you already own.

Quick answer: which Bose QuietComfort should you buy?

If you care most about… Best fit Why
Maximum features and the premium model QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) CustomTune, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode, refined ActiveSense, multipoint Bluetooth and Bose’s longest claimed battery figure in this group.
A newer standard model with USB-C audio QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) TrueSpatial Still, Motion and Cinema modes, USB-C playback up to 24-bit/48 kHz, ANR Off and improved call voice pickup.
Lowest purchase price among the three generations Earlier QuietComfort Headphones Potentially worthwhile if a current retailer price is clearly lower, but Bose’s comparison says this model does not include USB-C audio.

Hearing announcements and nearby people Ultra 2nd Gen or standard 2nd Gen Both generations provide Aware listening; the Ultra adds ActiveSense, while the standard 2nd Gen lists ActiveSense in Aware mode and ANR Off.

These recommendations describe Bose’s documented features. They are not independent measurements of noise reduction, sound quality, microphone performance, comfort or battery runtime.

What’s the difference between Bose QuietComfort and QuietComfort Ultra?

“QuietComfort” is the standard tier; “QuietComfort Ultra” is the feature-rich tier. For the current generations, the Ultra 2nd Gen is positioned above the standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen in price and capability. It adds Bose’s CustomTune personalization, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode, multipoint Bluetooth and a refined ActiveSense algorithm. The standard 2nd Gen instead emphasizes a refreshed design, TrueSpatial listening modes, USB-C audio specified to 24-bit/48 kHz, ANR Off and improved voice pickup.

#1 Best Overall
Bose QuietComfort Headphones - Wireless Bluetooth Headphones, Active Over Ear Noise Cancelling and Mic, USB-C Charging, Deep Bass, Up to 24 Hours of Playtime, Black
  • NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES: Effortlessly combines noise cancellation technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat
  • COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES: Plush over-ear cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your studio headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
  • 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
  • HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
  • ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time

The two products share the important practical upgrade of USB-C audio. The older standard QuietComfort does not list USB-C audio in Bose’s comparison. If you plan to connect directly to a laptop, tablet or phone over USB-C, the generation matters more than the word “QuietComfort” on the box.

Choose the Ultra 2nd Gen when its extras will change how you listen

The Ultra’s CustomTune, Immersive Audio and Cinema Mode matter most if you regularly use spatial effects for music, films, television, podcasts or audiobooks. Its multipoint Bluetooth is useful when you move between two paired devices, such as a work computer and a phone. ActiveSense is designed to adjust noise cancellation dynamically when environmental sound changes.

Choose the standard 2nd Gen when you want the newer basics

The standard 2nd Gen is the more rational choice when your priorities are USB-C playback, Bose’s new TrueSpatial modes and a lower announced entry price. You are not paying for Ultra-only features you may never enable, and you still get Aware, ActiveSense-in-Aware and ANR Off according to Bose’s support comparison.

Which Bose QuietComfort headphones are best for flying?

For a frequent flyer who wants the broadest feature set, the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are the strongest feature-based choice. Bose lists Quiet and Aware modes, ActiveSense, CustomTune and up to 30 hours of battery life. Bose also gives a 23-hour figure with Immersive Audio enabled, so long trips that use spatial processing should be planned around the shorter number rather than the headline maximum.

The standard QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) may be the better value for travelers who mainly want over-ear noise control, USB-C playback and a lower launch price. The supplied information does not establish an independent ranking of either model’s airplane noise reduction, seal, comfort or real-world battery life. Fit, return terms and your own tolerance for cabin pressure or clamping force remain important.

Flight checklist

  • Confirm the exact generation before ordering; “QuietComfort” and “QuietComfort Ultra” names cover different feature sets.
  • Decide whether you will use Immersive Audio on a flight. Bose’s Ultra figures differ substantially with that feature enabled.
  • Pack the supplied cable if you use an aircraft entertainment system or another wired source. The Ultra includes a 3.5 mm-to-2.5 mm audio cable; USB-C audio is available on both 2nd Gen products.
  • Check return conditions because no independent fit or comfort test is established here.

Noise control: Quiet, Aware, ActiveSense and ANR Off

Noise-control choice is a balance, not a single “best” setting. Quiet mode is the isolation-oriented option named for the Ultra. Aware mode lets environmental sound through, which is useful for announcements, conversations and street awareness. Bose describes ActiveSense as a dynamic adjustment that responds to surrounding sound; its support material lists the feature for the Ultra and in Aware mode on the standard 2nd Gen.

ANR Off on the standard 2nd Gen gives you a way to disable active noise reduction when you want neither full cancellation nor an electronically processed awareness mode. Bose’s comparison does not list that mode for the earlier model in the supplied material.

Use Quiet when concentration is the goal

Choose the strongest cancellation-oriented mode for engines, HVAC noise or a busy workspace when you do not need to monitor the room. Do not interpret the mode name as a laboratory measurement: independent attenuation results were not established.

Use Aware when you need the environment

Aware is the practical setting for airport announcements, office conversations and walking where hearing nearby sound matters. ActiveSense can alter the response as the soundscape changes, but Bose’s description is a manufacturer feature claim rather than an independently measured performance guarantee.

Immersive audio and video: Ultra Immersion versus TrueSpatial

The two 2nd Gen products offer different names for Bose’s virtualized spatial listening features. The Ultra 2nd Gen includes Immersion and Cinema modes. The standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen introduces Bose TrueSpatial technology with Still, Motion and Cinema modes; Bose says these are three modes previously exclusive to the Ultra series.

Mode or feature Ultra 2nd Gen QuietComfort 2nd Gen Best question to ask yourself
Still Not listed by that name in the supplied Ultra comparison. TrueSpatial mode. Do you want a stationary spatial presentation while seated?
Motion Not listed by that name in the supplied Ultra comparison. TrueSpatial mode. Do you want spatial processing intended for movement?
Cinema Included; Bose says it spatializes video and keeps dialogue clear. Included through TrueSpatial. Will you watch enough video to justify a dedicated dialogue-oriented mode?
Immersion Included; battery is rated at 23 hours with Immersive Audio on. Not named as an Ultra feature in the supplied standard-model material. Do you want a broader, more enveloping presentation for music or video?

Spatial processing is optional. Some listeners prefer the direct, unprocessed sound of ordinary stereo, while others value a room-like presentation. Because no independent listening comparison was retrieved, treat the choice as personal: use a return window to evaluate music, dialogue and long-form listening with your own content.

Can I use Bose QuietComfort headphones with a USB-C cable?

Yes for both 2nd Gen models, with different documented detail. Bose says the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) add wired lossless USB-C audio. Bose’s announcement for the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) specifies playback up to 24-bit/48 kHz. The earlier QuietComfort Headphones are listed by Bose’s comparison as lacking USB-C audio.

What USB-C audio changes

  • It can provide a direct digital connection to a compatible computer, tablet or phone instead of relying on Bluetooth.
  • It can reduce wireless latency for video or games, although the supplied material does not provide an independent latency measurement.
  • It lets you keep listening when Bluetooth pairing is inconvenient, provided the host device supports USB audio output.

A USB-C connector does not make every cable or device behave identically. Use a data-capable cable and check the operating system’s audio-output selector if playback does not switch automatically. The 24-bit/48 kHz figure is Bose’s specification for the standard 2nd Gen, not a promise that every source app or device will deliver that format.

Battery life and charging choices

Bose rates the Ultra 2nd Gen for up to 30 hours in its stated conditions, 23 hours with Immersive Audio on and 45 hours with ANC turned off. “Up to” is a test-condition figure, not a guaranteed runtime for every volume level, codec, temperature or call pattern. The standard 2nd Gen battery figure is not stated in the supplied information, so do not assume it matches the Ultra or the earlier model.

If you need maximum endurance from the Ultra, turning off Immersive Audio and ANC produces Bose’s highest stated figure. That also changes the listening experience, so battery mode should be selected intentionally rather than treated as a free performance boost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comfort, controls and physical design

Bose describes the line as comfortable, but the available material contains no independent fit testing. Head shape, glasses, hair, heat and clamping preference can change the experience more than a specification sheet suggests. Compare return policies before buying, especially if you will wear the headphones for several-hour flights or work sessions.

The Bose support comparison identifies push buttons and a volume slider on the Ultra 2nd Gen. The standard models use push buttons. If you prefer physical controls over touch gestures, that distinction is straightforward; if you want a touch strip or touch cups, these documented models do not provide one in the supplied comparison.

The Ultra 2nd Gen includes a carry case, a 3.5 mm-to-2.5 mm audio cable and a USB-C cable. The standard model’s supplied accessories are not fully enumerated in the available material. For the earlier QuietComfort, Bose says the SC/Club bundle has a soft case while the headphones themselves are identical to the corresponding standard model; verify the exact bundle listing before paying more or expecting a rigid case.

Device compatibility: Bluetooth, multipoint and Snapdragon Sound

The Ultra 2nd Gen uses Bluetooth 5.4 and supports multipoint Bluetooth according to Bose’s product information. Multipoint is useful when you need to remain connected to two devices, but actual switching behavior can depend on the phones, computers and operating systems involved.

Bose states that Snapdragon Sound features require a compatible Snapdragon Sound-certified source device. Do not choose the Ultra solely because a phone advertises a related codec family. Check both the source device certification and the operating-system support for the feature you intend to use. Codec availability can differ between regional versions, firmware and source hardware.

Are QuietComfort Ultra headphones worth the extra cost?

The Ultra 2nd Gen is worth the premium only when its additional features match your habits. Bose announced a U.S. retail price of $449 in 2025, while Bose announced a $359 U.S. preorder price for the standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen in 2026. Those are dated launch or preorder figures, not verified current prices; compare live listings before deciding.

Pay for the Ultra when you will use:

  • CustomTune personalization.
  • Immersive Audio and Cinema Mode for regular music or video listening.
  • Multipoint Bluetooth between work and personal devices.
  • The Ultra’s documented battery options, including 30 hours standard, 23 hours with Immersive Audio and 45 hours with ANC off.
  • The volume slider and Ultra-specific control layout.

Save on the standard 2nd Gen when you mainly need:

  • USB-C audio up to 24-bit/48 kHz.
  • TrueSpatial Still, Motion and Cinema modes.
  • ANR Off and ActiveSense in Aware mode.
  • Improved voice pickup for calls as described by Bose.
  • A lower entry position than the Ultra’s announced launch price.

If the current price gap is small, the Ultra’s extra functions may be easier to justify. If the gap is large and you listen mostly in ordinary stereo, the standard model is less likely to leave you paying for dormant features.

What is the difference between QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) and the older model?

The standard QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), announced in August 2026, add TrueSpatial listening modes, USB-C audio and a refreshed design. Bose’s support comparison also lists ANR Off, ActiveSense in Aware mode and improved voice pickup. The earlier QuietComfort Headphones, listed as sold from October 2023, do not list USB-C audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The older model can still make sense if a current, authorized listing is significantly cheaper and you use Bluetooth or traditional analog cabling. However, the available information does not establish current stock, retailer pricing, battery differences or independent performance differences. Confirm the generation in the product title, model number and included accessories rather than relying on a photograph.

A practical decision process before you order

  1. Write down your main listening situation. Pick the one that dominates: flights, office work, video, commuting, calls, wired computer use or long battery intervals.
  2. Decide whether spatial audio is central. Choose the Ultra for its Immersion and Cinema feature set, or the standard 2nd Gen for TrueSpatial Still, Motion and Cinema. If you normally disable spatial effects, do not pay for them automatically.
  3. Check your connection plan. If USB-C audio matters, limit the shortlist to the two 2nd Gen products. If you need Snapdragon Sound-related features, verify that the source device is certified.
  4. Set a current-price ceiling. Use the $449 Ultra announcement and $359 standard preorder announcement only as dated reference points. Compare the live price, warranty, return period and exact bundle.
  5. Choose your awareness behavior. Quiet is for isolation; Aware is for environmental sound; the standard 2nd Gen also lists ANR Off. Decide whether ActiveSense’s dynamic behavior is useful in your surroundings.
  6. Check controls and fit risk. The Ultra has push buttons and a volume slider; the standard models use push buttons. Confirm that the return policy covers comfort experimentation.
  7. Verify the listing. Match the exact generation, case type, cables, regional warranty and seller authorization before checkout.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing launch price with today’s price

The $449 Ultra figure is Bose’s announced U.S. retail price from 2025. The $359 standard figure is Bose’s announced U.S. preorder price from 2026. Neither proves what a retailer charges on the day you buy.

Assuming every QuietComfort has USB-C audio

Only the two 2nd Gen products are documented here with USB-C audio. Bose’s comparison says the earlier standard model lacks it.

Treating battery estimates as guarantees

The Ultra’s 30-hour, 23-hour and 45-hour numbers depend on the stated listening conditions. Volume, calls, wireless features and temperature can change actual runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming codec support is universal

Snapdragon Sound requires a compatible certified source. A phone’s processor name or a generic codec reference is not enough.

Assuming a premium model automatically fits better

No independent comfort or fit test was established. Ear shape and wearing conditions remain personal, so use the seller’s return terms as part of the decision.

Bottom line: match the model to the feature you will actually use

Buy the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for Bose’s fullest documented package: CustomTune, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode, multipoint Bluetooth, refined ActiveSense and up to 30 hours of claimed battery life. Buy the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) for the newer standard design, TrueSpatial modes, USB-C audio up to 24-bit/48 kHz, ANR Off and a lower announced launch position. Buy the earlier QuietComfort only when the live price is compelling and the missing USB-C audio and newer spatial features do not matter to you.

Whichever generation you choose, verify the live price, exact model, accessories, source-device compatibility and return policy. Those details determine whether the feature list translates into a good purchase for your particular commute, flight, desk or living room.
