For most people buying a new Beats Solo on-ear headphone, Beats Solo 4 is the straightforward choice: it is the current Solo model, supports USB-C and 3.5 mm wired listening, works with iOS and Android, and is rated for up to 50 hours of battery life. But it does not have active noise cancellation (ANC). If ANC and an over-ear fit matter more than staying in the Solo line, consider Beats Studio Pro instead.
Which Beats Solo model should you get?
Choose Beats Solo 4 if you want the current Solo on-ear design, long advertised battery life, USB-C charging and the option to listen through a cable. Beats lists the Solo 4 at $199.99 on its US product page; price and availability can change, so check the listing in your region before buying. Beats Solo 4 product page
Solo3 Wireless is a previous-generation model worth considering if you already own one or find a substantially cheaper listing. Compare the final price and condition rather than assuming an older model is a bargain. Beats Studio Pro is a different product line, but is the Beats option to consider if ANC is a must.
| Model | Best fit | Key details | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beats Solo 4 | People who want current on-ear Beats headphones, wired options and long advertised battery life | Up to 50 hours of battery life; USB-C and 3.5 mm wired audio; US list price $199.99 | No ANC; on-ear fit may not suit everyone |
| Beats Solo3 Wireless | Existing owners or shoppers weighing a checked used or discounted listing | Apple Support lists up to 40 hours of playback and wired listening with a RemoteTalk cable when the battery is depleted | Condition, included accessories and remaining inventory vary by seller |
| Beats Studio Pro | People who prioritize ANC and over-ear cups | Beats lists ANC and Transparency mode in an over-ear design | It is not a Solo model |
Is Solo 4 the right choice for your priorities?
Choose it for wired listening and battery life
Beats advertises up to 50 hours of Solo 4 battery life. Apple conducted the battery test in March 2024, and Beats notes that actual results depend on device settings, environment and usage. Treat 50 hours as a stated maximum, not a guaranteed runtime for every listener. Beats Solo 4 product page
#1 Best Overall
- Custom acoustic architecture and updated drivers for powerful Beats sound.
- Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking.
- Ultralight ergonomic design for all-day comfort. Flex-grip headband and ergonomically angled, adjustable ear cups for a stable fit.
- UltraPlush ear cushions are designed for comfort and durability.
- Up to 50 hours of battery life.
Solo 4 supports audio over USB-C or the included 3.5 mm analog cable. Its package also includes a carrying case and a USB-C to USB-C cable. The USB-C power adapter is sold separately, so you may need a compatible adapter if you do not already have one. Beats Solo 4 product page
Check the fit before committing
Solo 4 is an on-ear headphone, not an over-ear design. Fit and comfort are personal, so try it on if you can. A long advertised battery life or a lower price cannot compensate if the on-ear fit is uncomfortable for you.

Do not buy it for noise cancellation
Beats Support explicitly states that Solo 4 does not feature Active Noise Cancelling. Its on-ear design also differs from Studio Pro’s over-ear cups. If reducing outside noise is a requirement, compare Studio Pro’s ANC and Transparency mode rather than treating Solo 4 as an ANC headphone. When does Solo3 Wireless make sense?
Solo3 is a legacy alternative, not the current Solo model listed in Beats’ catalog. Apple Support lists up to 40 hours of playback and says you can listen in wired mode with the RemoteTalk cable when the battery is depleted. Apple Support: Set up and use your Beats Solo3 Wireless

Retail stock and the condition of individual listings vary; a legacy status does not mean every seller has stopped carrying it. Before buying one, check the seller’s reputation and return policy, ask about battery condition if it is used, and confirm that the RemoteTalk cable is included if wired listening matters to you. Compare the complete cost against Solo 4 rather than judging by the headline discount.
How to make the final choice
- Decide whether you require ANC. If yes, Solo 4 is not the match; consider the over-ear Beats Studio Pro.
- Choose your fit. Solo 4 is on-ear. Try it if possible, especially if you are unsure whether that style will be comfortable.
- Consider how you will listen. Solo 4 includes USB-C and 3.5 mm audio options. For a Solo3 listing, verify the RemoteTalk cable is included if you need wired listening.
- Compare battery needs with realistic expectations. Solo 4 is advertised for up to 50 hours and Solo3 for up to 40 hours, but usage affects actual playback time.
- Check the full price and package. Solo 4 includes its case and audio cables but not a USB-C power adapter. For a used or discounted Solo3, weigh condition, seller, return terms and accessories alongside the price.
What about Solo Buds?
Beats Solo Buds are earbuds, not on-ear headphones, and Beats lists them separately from Solo 4. They are not a like-for-like Solo headphone alternative if you are choosing between on-ear models. Beats product catalog
