For most households, the 64GB Apple TV 4K is enough. It is the sensible choice when you mainly stream video and music, use a normal collection of apps, and do not need a wired network connection or Thread support. Choose the 128GB model when you want Gigabit Ethernet or Thread, or when keeping a larger collection of apps installed is worth paying for. The extra $50 buys more than storage: it moves you to the Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration.
Apple TV 4K storage: the short decision
Apple currently sells two Apple TV 4K configurations in the United States: a 64GB Wi-Fi model and a 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. Apple’s technical specifications list the capacities and connectivity, while its US product page lists prices of $199 and $249 at the time of review. Prices and availability can change, so verify the current listing before buying.
- Buy 64GB if your home mainly opens streaming apps, uses Wi-Fi reliably, does not need wired Ethernet or Thread, and you are comfortable offloading or deleting an app if storage becomes tight.
- Buy 128GB if you want Gigabit Ethernet, need Thread for compatible smart-home plans, or prefer extra local headroom for a larger installed app collection.
- Compare the whole configuration. The 128GB option is not a $50 storage-only upgrade. Ethernet and Thread are included with it.
There is no official universal app-count limit for either capacity. App sizes vary, and Apple does not publish a typical amount of usable space after tvOS is installed. The useful question is therefore not “How many apps fit?” but “Do I need the larger configuration’s connectivity, and do I want to manage a larger local app library?”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat Apple TV 4K actually stores
Apple describes the device this way: “Your Apple TV 4K streams video and music, but it stores apps locally.” That distinction is the foundation of the storage decision. Video and music services are normally delivered over your network; applications, their installed components, and some app data occupy the device’s internal storage.

- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
Apple’s storage-management guide says downloading more apps uses more space. The Manage Storage screen shows each installed app and the amount of storage it uses, letting you see your household’s actual pattern instead of relying on an estimated app count.
This does not make Apple TV 4K a general-purpose offline movie drive. Apple’s support wording emphasizes streaming video and music and local storage for apps. If an individual app offers downloads or caches content, its behavior and storage use are controlled by that app; Apple’s published guidance does not establish a universal offline-library capacity.
Streaming is not the same as storing every title
Buying the larger model will not turn Apple TV 4K into a permanent archive of every film, episode or album in your subscriptions. The capacity comparison concerns the apps installed on the box and the data those apps use. Your streaming catalog remains dependent on the service and network connection rather than on whether you selected 64GB or 128GB.

Why app habits matter more than a headline number
A home with a few streaming clients has a different storage profile from one that installs many services, games and utility apps. Even within one category, app footprints can differ and can change as developers release updates. That is why a precise “you can install X apps” promise would be misleading. Use the Manage Storage list on an existing Apple TV, when available, as a practical reference for your own household.
Current Apple TV 4K configurations
| Configuration | Advertised storage | Bundled connectivity | US list price at review time | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi | 64GB | Wi-Fi | $199 | Streaming-focused homes with a modest app collection |
| Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet | 128GB | Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread | $249 | Homes that want wired networking, Thread, or more local app headroom |
See Apple’s technical specifications for the capacities and connectivity, and the Apple TV 4K product page for the current configuration and feature listing. The prices above are US figures shown at review time; regional prices, taxes, currency conversion and availability can differ.
The $50 difference should therefore be read as a configuration premium. You receive twice the advertised storage, but you also move from the Wi-Fi model to one that includes Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. If either of those features would otherwise influence your buying decision, they may be more important than the storage number itself.
When 64GB is the right choice
You mainly stream rather than install specialist apps
If the Apple TV 4K will mostly open the handful of services your household already uses, 64GB is a reasonable default. The device streams the programs and music; it does not need to hold a permanent copy of every title you watch. A typical streaming-focused setup therefore has a smaller storage burden than a device used as a broad app platform.
You use Wi-Fi and do not need Thread
The 64GB model is the Wi-Fi configuration. If your television area has dependable Wi-Fi and there is no plan to use Apple TV 4K as part of a Thread-enabled smart-home setup, paying for the larger model’s connectivity may not add value. Storage alone is not a reason to assume that 128GB is mandatory.
You accept occasional housekeeping
Apple provides built-in ways to respond if storage gets tight. You can inspect the Manage Storage list, identify apps that consume the most space, and offload or delete ones that are no longer useful. A household that is comfortable doing that can get more practical value from the $50 saved on the 64GB model.
You are buying for a straightforward television setup
For a television that sits in a room with solid Wi-Fi and a short list of regularly used streaming services, the 64GB model keeps the purchase simple. You are not paying for Ethernet or Thread that you do not plan to use, while still receiving local space for the apps you choose.

When 128GB is worth the extra $50
You want a wired network connection
The larger model includes Gigabit Ethernet. A wired connection can be useful when the Apple TV 4K is close to a router or network switch and you prefer to avoid Wi-Fi variability, or when your home-network design places fixed entertainment devices on Ethernet. The published specifications do not establish a universal streaming-speed advantage, so treat Ethernet as a connectivity preference rather than a guaranteed picture-quality improvement.

You need Thread support
Thread is bundled with the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration. If Thread matters to your planned smart-home accessories or network design, the larger model is the configuration that includes it. In that case, the storage decision is secondary: you are choosing the feature bundle that meets the connectivity requirement.
You want more local app headroom
Some households install many apps, keep games or other large applications available, or simply prefer not to think about storage management. The 128GB capacity gives those users more room before they need to offload or delete anything. That is practical headroom, not an Apple-published threshold: no official source says that a particular number of apps requires 128GB.
You value fewer compromises over the device’s life
If the price difference is small relative to the cost of the television setup and you already want Ethernet or Thread, the 128GB model combines those features with additional capacity. Do not describe the $50 as a pure storage premium; it pays for a different hardware configuration.
You are planning a changing app collection
A household’s app list can grow as viewing habits change. Extra capacity can make that growth less demanding because you have more room before opening Manage Storage. It still is not a guarantee that you will never need housekeeping: app updates and app-specific data can alter usage over time.
How much usable space do you really get?
A capacity printed on the box is not the same as free space available for apps. Apple’s specification footnote says that “1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.” Formatting and the operating system consume part of the device’s storage, but Apple’s published pages do not quantify the reserved amount or provide a typical usable-space figure.
That means a 64GB Apple TV 4K will not present 64GB of installable app space, and the same qualification applies to 128GB. Avoid purchase advice based on a precise free-space estimate unless Apple publishes one for the exact tvOS release and configuration you are considering.
App sizes also differ. A lightweight streaming client, a game with substantial assets, and an app that caches content can have very different footprints. Apple’s Manage Storage screen is the authoritative view for your particular installation because it reports the space used by each app on that device.
Do not confuse advertised capacity with a quota for one app
The 64GB and 128GB labels describe total advertised internal capacity, not a reserved allowance for a specific service. Space is shared by installed apps and the system. Consequently, two households with the same model can see different free-space figures after installing different combinations of apps.

Check which apps use space
- Open the Apple TV 4K’s Settings and go to the storage-management area.
- Open Manage Storage to display installed apps and their reported space use.
- Review the largest entries first, then decide whether each app is still needed.
The labels can vary slightly with the tvOS version, but the Manage Storage screen is the place Apple identifies for per-app usage. Checking it after you have installed your normal set of apps gives a better buying baseline for a second Apple TV 4K than an internet-wide app-count estimate.

Offload an unused app
Apple supports automatic offloading of unused apps. Offloading frees the app’s occupied space while retaining its data. If you later need the app, you can download it again. This is useful when you want to reduce storage use without intentionally removing the app’s local information.
Delete an app
Deleting removes the app and its data. Apple’s install-or-delete guide explains the distinction between offloading and deleting. An app can be downloaded again after deletion, but that is not a promise that every app will restore every piece of local state. Follow the app’s own account, synchronization and backup behavior when the data matters.
Use housekeeping as a strategy, not a capacity guarantee
Offloading makes 64GB more flexible, but it should not be treated as proof that any app collection will fit indefinitely. New versions can change app sizes, and your household’s habits can change. Choose 128GB when avoiding that maintenance is important, especially if you also want Ethernet or Thread.
Review before deleting
Before deleting an app, check whether another member of the household still uses it and whether its data is synchronized through an account. Offloading is the less destructive choice when you want to reclaim the app’s space while keeping its data. Deletion is appropriate when you no longer need the app and accept removing its local data.
Storage is not upgradeable in the decision you are making
Apple’s published specifications and support material do not establish an upgrade path for Apple TV 4K internal storage. Buy the capacity and connectivity you want at purchase time rather than assuming you can add storage later. External USB storage is not presented as an expansion option in the cited specifications or support material.
This is why the configuration comparison matters. If you later discover that you need wired Ethernet or Thread, moving from the 64GB model to the 128GB model would mean replacing the device, not adding a module. The same logic applies if you decide that repeated app cleanup is more inconvenient than expected.
Do you need an HDMI cable?
Apple says the HDMI cable is sold separately. Its buying page specifies a Dolby Vision-compatible cable for 4K HDR streaming. This is a setup requirement for a compatible television and signal chain, not a way to increase Apple TV 4K storage.

Treat the cable as a separate setup cost when comparing the total purchase, because neither Apple TV 4K configuration includes it according to the buying page.
A practical decision framework
| Your situation | Recommended configuration | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly streaming apps, reliable Wi-Fi, no Thread plans | 64GB Wi-Fi | Meets the primary streaming use case without paying for unused connectivity |
| Streaming plus a larger or changing app collection | 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet | Provides additional local headroom and reduces storage housekeeping |
| Router or switch connection preferred at the television | 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet | Gigabit Ethernet is included only in the larger configuration |
| Thread is part of the smart-home plan | 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet | Thread is bundled with that model |
| Lowest current US purchase price is the priority | 64GB Wi-Fi | Apple’s listed price is $199 versus $249 for the larger configuration |
| You want the connectivity features and extra capacity together | 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet | The $249 model combines 128GB, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread |
The table is a decision aid, not an app-capacity test. If your only difference is “I might install more apps someday,” estimate how much you value avoiding offloading and compare that preference with the 128GB model’s Ethernet and Thread bundle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost and value: what the $50 actually buys
At the listed US prices, the 128GB model costs $50 more than the 64GB model. That gives you an additional advertised 64GB, but the purchase also includes the hardware configuration with Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. The right comparison is therefore $199 for Wi-Fi and 64GB versus $249 for Wi-Fi + Ethernet, 128GB and Thread.

If you would never connect Ethernet, never use Thread and expect a modest app collection, the lower-priced model avoids paying for features you do not intend to use. If you would otherwise buy a separate connectivity solution, or if avoiding storage management matters, the larger configuration may provide better overall value even though Apple does not sell it as a storage-only upgrade.
Prices are time-sensitive and regional. Taxes, currency, local availability and retailer discounts can change the final total. Use Apple’s current local listing when making the final comparison rather than treating the $199 and $249 figures as permanent worldwide prices.
Common buying mistakes
- Counting every gigabyte as available. Apple says formatted capacity is lower than the advertised number.
- Assuming streaming titles fill the drive. Apple describes video and music as streamed while apps are stored locally; app-specific downloads or caches can behave differently.
- Calling 128GB a storage-only upgrade. Ethernet and Thread are part of the larger configuration.
- Relying on an invented app limit. Apple does not publish a universal app count, and app sizes vary.
- Assuming storage can be added later. No upgrade path is established in Apple’s cited specifications or support guides.
- Deleting when offloading would do. Offloading frees app space while retaining data; deleting removes the app and its data.
- Forgetting the HDMI cable. Apple lists the cable separately and specifies a Dolby Vision-compatible cable for 4K HDR streaming.
Questions to answer before you order
- How will the Apple TV 4K connect? If Ethernet is preferred or required, select the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration.
- Does your smart-home plan require Thread? If yes, the 128GB model is the relevant choice because Thread is included there.
- What apps will be installed? List the services, games and utility apps you actually expect to use; do not substitute a guessed universal app count.
- Will someone manage storage? If not, extra capacity can reduce maintenance, although it cannot eliminate changing app sizes.
- Are you comparing current prices in the right region? The $199 and $249 figures are US listings observed at review time, not a worldwide price promise.
- Do you already have the required HDMI cable? Apple sells it separately and calls for a Dolby Vision-compatible cable for 4K HDR streaming.
- Would replacing the box later be acceptable? Because no storage-upgrade path is established, choose the configuration you can live with rather than planning to expand it.
Bottom line: choose the configuration, not just the number
Choose the 64GB Apple TV 4K when streaming is the priority and Wi-Fi is sufficient. Choose the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model when wired networking, Thread or a larger locally installed app collection matters. The additional capacity is useful, but the decisive value of the larger model is the combination of 128GB storage, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. Apple’s Manage Storage tools make occasional cleanup possible on either model, while the formatted capacity on both is lower than the advertised number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 64GB enough for Apple TV 4K?
For most streaming-focused households, yes. Apple TV 4K streams video and music and stores apps locally. If you use Wi-Fi, do not need Thread, and can offload or delete apps when necessary, the 64GB Wi-Fi model is a reasonable choice. Apple does not publish a universal app-count limit.
Should I buy the 64GB or 128GB Apple TV 4K?
Choose 64GB for the lower $199 US listed price and a modest streaming app collection. Choose 128GB when you want Gigabit Ethernet or Thread, want more local app headroom, or prefer less storage housekeeping. The $249 model is a different Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration, not merely a storage upgrade.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Apple TV 4K store movies and music locally?
Apple says Apple TV 4K streams video and music but stores apps locally. Individual apps may have their own download or caching behavior, but Apple’s published guidance does not define a universal offline movie-library capacity.
What happens when Apple TV 4K runs low on storage?
Use Settings and Manage Storage to see which apps use space. You can offload an unused app, which frees its app space while retaining its data, or delete it, which removes the app and its data. Downloading the app again is possible, but restoration of every piece of local state is not guaranteed.
Is the 128GB Apple TV 4K faster for streaming?
The cited specifications establish that the 128GB model includes Gigabit Ethernet and Thread, but they do not establish a universal streaming-speed or picture-quality advantage. Choose Ethernet because you want a wired connection, not because the storage number alone guarantees better streaming.
Can I add storage to a 64GB Apple TV 4K later?
No storage-upgrade path is established in Apple’s cited specifications or support material. Buy the capacity and connectivity you want at the time of purchase. External USB expansion is not presented as an option in those materials.
Do Apple TV 4K models include an HDMI cable?
Apple’s buying page says the HDMI cable is sold separately and specifies a Dolby Vision-compatible cable for 4K HDR streaming. The cable is a separate setup purchase and does not affect internal storage.
The Bottom Line
Most streaming households should choose the 64GB Wi-Fi Apple TV 4K. Pay the extra $50 for the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model when you want Gigabit Ethernet, Thread, or more room for a changing app collection. Compare the complete feature bundle, remember that formatted capacity is lower than advertised, and choose the model you will not need to replace later.
