Choose RAM for the programs and tasks you expect to run at the same time—not simply for the largest number your budget can buy. For general use, Microsoft’s buying guide suggests 8–16 GB; around 16 GB is its guidance for creative work, and it lists 16–64 GB for gaming or streaming. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is a compatibility floor, not a general-purpose recommendation. Your software’s requirements and your PC’s upgrade limits matter too.
How much RAM do I need?
RAM is a computer’s temporary working memory. Programs and files are loaded into it for access while you work; its contents are lost when the computer is turned off or restarted. More capacity can help a PC handle more simultaneous activity, but the Microsoft guidance cited here is not a performance benchmark: it does not quantify how much faster a particular PC will become after a RAM upgrade.
Start with the most demanding work you expect to do and how much you do at once. Microsoft’s recommendations are broad shopping guidance, not guarantees that every program or configuration will work well at a given capacity. Check the requirements published for the specific applications, games, and features you use.

RAM capacity is also separate from other performance specifications. More memory does not automatically compensate for an unsuitable processor, graphics hardware, storage device, or poorly supported application. When comparing complete PCs, evaluate those components for the task as well as the RAM.
| Use case | Microsoft’s guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Basic browsing, documents, and video streaming | Microsoft Support says to aim for at least 4 GB for basic use, but recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. Microsoft’s buying guide gives 8–16 GB for general and student use. | Treat 4 GB as a basic-use floor, not a universal buying target. For a new general-use PC, use the 8–16 GB range as a starting point and consider what else will be open at once. |
| Photo or video editing | Around 16 GB. | Check the exact editing software’s requirements and the size or complexity of the work you plan to do. |
| Gaming or streaming | 16–64 GB. Microsoft also says 8 GB can suit many tasks and notes gaming or streaming may call for closer to 16 GB. | Use the game, streaming software, and other programs’ requirements to narrow the range; it is not a promise for every game or stream setup. |
| Copilot+ PC | At least 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5, alongside other specifications. | This is a requirement for the Copilot+ PC category, not a universal RAM requirement for every computer that runs AI software. |
These figures come from Microsoft’s current PC and Laptop Buying Guide, computer memory guidance, and Windows 11 specifications. The pages do not show a publication year for these recommendations, so they are best treated as current guidance rather than dated statistics.
Is 8 GB of RAM enough?
It can be enough for general tasks, but it is not a universal answer. Microsoft’s support guidance recommends 8 GB for longer-term use, while its buying guide places general and student use in an 8–16 GB range. That range reflects differences in what people mean by everyday use: a PC used for a small number of basic tasks has different demands from one expected to support several programs at once.
For browsing, documents, or video streaming, 8 GB is a reasonable starting point under Microsoft’s guidance. Before choosing it, consider whether your usual routine includes additional demanding software, gaming, or creative work. If it does, check the programs’ own requirements rather than assuming that a general-use recommendation covers them.
Eight gigabytes may also be less comfortable if you keep many browser tabs, collaboration tools, cloud-sync clients, and office applications open together. That does not establish a universal requirement for more memory; it simply makes your simultaneous-use pattern important. If you are buying a new system for several years of general use, compare both 8 GB and 16 GB configurations and verify whether the lower-capacity model can be upgraded later.
Windows 11’s minimum is 4 GB, but a device meeting that minimum is not necessarily a suitable choice for your workload. Microsoft states that specific apps, features, and added hardware may require more than the minimum. The Windows 11 system requirements are a compatibility baseline, not a recommendation that every Windows 11 PC should have only 4 GB.
How much RAM do I need for gaming?
Microsoft’s buying guide lists 16–64 GB for gaming or streaming and says closer to 16 GB may be appropriate for those activities. It also notes that 8 GB can suit many tasks. Those are broad shopping suggestions, not specifications for every game, stream, or PC configuration.

Check the whole gaming setup
Look up the requirements for each game you intend to play and for any streaming software you plan to run. Then account for whether you expect to run multiple programs at once. A game’s requirements and the demands of a simultaneous stream are not interchangeable; check both before deciding.
Include launchers, voice chat, browser windows, recording tools, and other software that you routinely leave open. If you stream, examine the game and the streaming application separately, then consider the combined workload. The manufacturer’s guidance gives a shopping range, while the publishers’ specifications determine whether a particular title or tool supports your intended configuration.
Do not read the range as a performance promise
The 16–64 GB range is not a claim that every game needs 64 GB, or that adding RAM by itself will improve a particular game by a measurable amount. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not provide controlled gaming tests or measured upgrade gains. Use the specific game and software publishers’ requirements to decide whether a configuration is adequate for your intended setup.
When comparing two gaming PCs, keep the graphics processor, processor, storage, and display target in view. A larger RAM number alone does not demonstrate that one system will deliver a better result. Capacity should be enough for the game and the other software you run, while the rest of the configuration must also suit the game’s requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs 16 GB enough for video editing?
Microsoft suggests around 16 GB for photo or video editing. That makes 16 GB a useful starting point for comparing general-purpose creative PCs, not a guarantee that it will suit every editing program, project, or workflow.
Before buying, check the exact editing application’s published requirements and consider the projects you expect to handle. If you also plan to keep other demanding programs open, evaluate those requirements alongside the editor’s. The Microsoft recommendation is broad; it does not specify a particular software package, project size, or editing configuration.
Ask whether your work involves photo editing, video editing, motion graphics, batch exports, or several creative applications at once. These are different workloads, so the editor’s own documentation is more useful than treating 16 GB as a guaranteed ceiling. Also check whether the PC can be upgraded if your projects or software change.

What does the Windows 11 minimum actually mean?
Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum for Windows 11. This is the operating system’s stated system requirement, not a general recommendation for a comfortable or long-lasting PC purchase. Microsoft separately notes that particular apps, features, or added hardware can call for more memory.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction matters when comparing a PC that technically meets Windows 11’s requirements with one intended for years of general use, gaming, or creative work. Use the minimum to assess basic OS eligibility; use the workload guidance and specific software requirements to choose capacity.
A system can satisfy an operating-system requirement and still be a poor match for the programs you need. Treat minimum specifications as a pass/fail compatibility check. Treat buying guidance as a starting point, then verify the applications and the exact hardware configuration.
What is special about the Copilot+ PC RAM requirement?
Microsoft specifies at least 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory for a Copilot+ PC, along with other qualifying requirements such as an appropriate processor and neural processing unit. This specification applies to the Copilot+ PC category.
Do not apply that figure automatically to every computer that runs an AI application. A conventional PC may run particular AI software with requirements set by that software publisher. Conversely, a PC marketed as Copilot+ must meet the category’s complete specification, not just the memory figure. Check the complete product description and Microsoft’s current requirements when shopping.

What to check before upgrading RAM
Do not buy a memory kit based on capacity alone. PCs differ in whether their memory can be upgraded and in the capacity and module types they support. Microsoft recommends checking with the PC manufacturer or a retailer for upgrade options; its guidance does not establish compatibility for any specific machine or kit.
- Identify the exact PC model. Use the model name or number from the device’s manufacturer information so you can find documentation for the right configuration, rather than relying on a product family name alone.
- Confirm upgradeability. Check the manufacturer’s documentation to see whether the memory is user-upgradeable. Some PCs may not offer an upgrade path; do not assume a laptop or desktop can accept a replacement kit.
- Find the supported maximum capacity. Confirm the machine’s supported RAM capacity in its documentation. A kit’s advertised capacity does not establish that your PC supports it.
- Match the memory generation and form factor. Verify the exact memory type and module form factor specified for your PC or motherboard. The Copilot+ PC requirement for DDR5/LPDDR5 applies to that category; it does not tell you which memory fits another PC.
- Check the available slots and memory arrangement. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to determine what modules are installed and what can be added or replaced. Do not infer the upgrade path from capacity alone.
- Check whether memory is soldered or otherwise not user-upgradeable. Confirm this for the exact machine before ordering. If the documentation does not establish an upgrade option, ask the manufacturer or a qualified retailer rather than guessing.
- Check the complete configuration. Confirm that the proposed modules, total capacity, generation, and form factor are supported together. A module that looks correct in a listing may still be unsuitable for the motherboard or laptop.
- Compare the upgrade with the workload. Add capacity only if it addresses a need supported by the applications you use or the PC configuration you are considering. The Microsoft sources provide no benchmark showing a specific performance gain from a particular upgrade.
Only after confirming those details should you choose a compatible RAM upgrade kit, desktop memory kit, or laptop SO-DIMM memory. Those labels are not interchangeable guarantees: the exact supported generation, form factor, capacity, and upgradeability must match the PC’s documentation.

If a manufacturer lists several configurations under one model family, use the documentation for your exact submodel. Slot count, soldered memory, maximum capacity, and supported generation can differ between otherwise similar machines. When the documentation is unclear, obtain confirmation from the manufacturer or a qualified retailer before ordering.
How to compare two PC configurations
Compare configurations by the work they must support, not by the RAM number in isolation. A higher capacity can be valuable when it matches more demanding software or simultaneous use, but it does not by itself prove that a system is the better choice for your needs.
- Workload: List the main applications, games, and tasks you expect to run, including combinations you routinely use together.
- Capacity: Compare the installed RAM against Microsoft’s broad task guidance and the exact requirements of the software that matters to you.
- Upgrade path: For an existing PC, verify whether the memory is upgradeable and check the supported maximum capacity, generation, form factor, slots, and whether the memory is soldered.
- Configuration certainty: Use documentation for the exact PC or motherboard model. The sources cited here do not establish that any particular PC and kit are compatible.
- Category requirements: If the machine is sold as a Copilot+ PC, confirm the required 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 and the other category specifications. Do not confuse that category rule with a requirement for every AI-capable workload.
If a new PC’s specifications do not provide enough detail to verify its memory configuration or upgrade path, ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm it before purchasing. Do not treat a general recommendation as a substitute for a model-specific specification.
A practical decision path
- Write down your workload. Separate everyday use from gaming, streaming, editing, or another demanding task, and note which activities you expect to run simultaneously.
- Use the closest Microsoft range as a starting point. General and student use: 8–16 GB. Photo or video editing: around 16 GB. Gaming or streaming: 16–64 GB, with closer to 16 GB suggested for those activities. Copilot+ PC: at least 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 as part of that category’s other requirements.
- Verify specific software requirements. Check each relevant program or game publisher’s requirements, especially when the task is more demanding than general use.
- Check simultaneous activity. Include the browser, communication tools, recording or streaming software, and other programs you keep open while the main task runs.
- For an existing machine, verify the upgrade path. Confirm model-specific compatibility and upgradeability before shopping for a kit.
- Choose the lowest configuration that responsibly fits the work you intend to do. The Microsoft figures are ranges and recommendations, not a universal rule or a measured guarantee of performance.
- Recheck the specification at checkout. Make sure the advertised capacity, memory generation, form factor, and upgrade terms match the exact model documentation.
Common RAM-buying mistakes
- Buying to the operating system minimum. Windows 11’s 4 GB requirement does not make 4 GB a universal target for general use.
- Treating a broad range as an app requirement. Microsoft’s gaming and creative guidance does not replace the specifications of the individual software you plan to run.
- Assuming more RAM guarantees a measurable speed increase. The cited Microsoft pages offer recommendations and requirements, not controlled tests or a quantified benefit for a given upgrade.
- Assuming every PC is upgradeable. Check the exact model’s documentation and manufacturer guidance before ordering memory.
- Choosing by capacity while ignoring compatibility. Supported memory generation, form factor, maximum capacity, slots, and soldered memory all affect whether an upgrade is possible.
- Applying Copilot+ requirements to all AI use. The 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 minimum belongs to the Copilot+ PC category and should not be generalized to every computer running AI software.
- Using a family name instead of an exact model. Similar-looking laptops or desktops can have different memory arrangements and limits.
- Assuming a larger kit is automatically better value. Capacity should follow the workload and verified support, not the biggest advertised number.
