If your home has no existing doorbell wiring, a battery-powered camera installed wire-free is usually the simplest route. Google’s guidance calls wireless installation the easiest option when there is no doorbell system. That avoids connecting doorbell wires, but you still need to mount the camera, set it up in its app and connect it to Wi-Fi.
Which doorbell camera is easiest to install?
For a home without doorbell wiring, the Google Nest Doorbell (battery) is a clear example of a wire-free option. Google’s instructions still call for a Phillips screwdriver and power drill, so “wire-free” does not mean tool-free. The package includes a wall plate, wedge, screws, anchors, spacers and an unlocking tool.
The Arlo Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) is another battery-operated option. Arlo says it can be used on battery power or connected to compatible existing wiring for trickle charging. The manufacturer information does not establish that one model is universally easier than the other, and there is no supported installation-time comparison.
Choose based on your home and how you want the chime to work
| What to consider | What it means for installation |
|---|---|
| Existing wiring | Without a doorbell system, wire-free installation avoids connecting wires. If wiring is present, check the camera’s voltage and chime compatibility before deciding to use it. |
| Indoor chime | A wire-free Nest battery setup will not ring the existing wired chime. Google says it can send alerts to a phone and compatible Google speakers or displays. |
| Charging | Arlo says its second-generation doorbell runs on battery power and charges with the included USB-C cable. Connecting compatible wiring enables trickle charging; it does not eliminate the need to check the model’s installation requirements. |
| Mounting location | The surface and viewing angle affect the work involved. Google’s battery doorbell package includes a wedge that adjusts horizontally up to 20 degrees; its guide lists drill bits and wall anchors. |
| Smart-home setup | App setup and notifications are part of the experience. Google documents alerts through its app and compatible speakers or displays; check current compatibility for any other system you rely on. |
What changes if you already have doorbell wires?
Existing wiring can be useful if you want to retain a traditional chime or avoid relying only on battery charging, but confirm compatibility first. Google specifies 8–24 V AC for a wired Nest setup; its battery model can connect to doorbell wires to gradually charge the battery, subject to limitations. Arlo specifies 8–24 V AC for the second-generation model’s wired use with a chime and trickle charging. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every existing transformer or chime will work.

Wired installation involves electrical precautions. Google’s wired installation instructions say to switch off power to the doorbell and chime at the breaker or fuse box, then confirm the correct circuit is off before disconnecting the old doorbell. If you cannot identify the circuit, are unsure about the wiring, or need transformer work, have a qualified electrician handle it.

- Charge the device. Follow the model’s instructions before mounting. Arlo’s support guidance advises charging its battery before installation.
- Install the manufacturer’s app and complete setup. Connect the doorbell to your account and Wi-Fi as directed. Arlo uses the Arlo Secure app; follow the current guide for the specific model.
- Choose and check the mounting location. Consider the surface, Wi-Fi coverage and viewing angle. If the location needs an angled view, check whether the included wedge supports it.
- Attach the wall plate. Use the included mounting parts and the tools specified in the model’s guide. A drill may be required even though the installation is wire-free.
- Mount and verify the doorbell. Secure the device as instructed, then check in the app that it connects and that notifications work where you expect them.
For model-specific steps, use Google’s Nest Doorbell (battery) installation guide or Arlo’s second-generation installation and hardwiring guide. Product instructions can change, so use the current guide for the exact model you buy.

What not to assume when choosing a camera
- Battery-powered does not automatically mean tool-free; mounting can require drilling.
- Do not assume a wire-free battery camera will ring an existing mechanical chime.
- Do not assume compatible voltage alone guarantees that a particular chime or transformer will work.
- Do not rely on unverified claims about installation time, battery life, or comparative ease; the cited manufacturer materials do not provide a fair model-to-model test.
