The best TV sync box depends on what you watch, where the video signal comes from, your TV’s resolution and refresh rate, and the lighting ecosystem you already own. HDMI boxes synchronize only devices connected through their HDMI inputs. If you use apps installed directly on the television, a camera-based screen-sync kit is the relevant type instead.
For HDMI gaming and streaming, compare HDMI generation, 8K/4K limits, refresh-rate pass-through, HDR formats, input count, and the lights or bridge required. The Philips Hue Play HDMI sync box 8K, Philips Hue Play HDMI sync box 4K, Govee AI Sync Box Kit 2, Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync, and Philips Smart Lighting HDMI 2.1 Sync Box with Strip Light cover different combinations of those requirements. Manufacturer specifications establish compatibility, not an independently tested category winner.
What a TV sync box does
A sync box sits between video sources and the television. You connect consoles, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, or streaming sticks to the box’s HDMI inputs, connect the box’s output to the TV, and connect compatible color lights through the matching lighting system. The box analyzes the incoming video and sends color data to the lights so the glow behind or around the TV follows the on-screen content.

This arrangement works only for signals that actually travel through the box. Philips Hue’s documentation lists set-top boxes, consoles, and streaming sticks as supported HDMI sources. Its box reads that signal and sends lighting commands to a Hue Bridge, which controls color-capable lights assigned to an Entertainment area. A TV app such as Netflix or a broadcaster’s app, opened from the TV’s own operating system, does not pass through an HDMI sync box and therefore cannot be captured by it. Philips Hue’s 8K product documentation states this limitation explicitly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There are two practical architectures:
- HDMI pass-through: Every source is routed through the box. This is usually the most direct choice for console and external-streamer setups.
- Camera-based screen capture: A camera mounted above the television reads the display itself. This can include native TV apps, broadcast channels, and HDMI sources without rerouting them.
Neither architecture is universally superior. The right choice is determined first by your sources, then by video-format requirements and the lights you want to control.
Will a sync box work with streaming apps installed directly on your TV?
Not if the product is an HDMI-only box. An app running inside the television sends its picture directly to the TV panel rather than out through an HDMI cable, so the box has no signal to analyze. Connecting an HDMI cable from the box to the TV does not reverse that flow.
Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync is designed for this mixed-source situation. Signify says its camera-based product works with native TV apps, broadcast television, and HDMI sources because the camera reads the screen. The camera is mounted above the set, and the kit includes the capture device and strip light. This avoids changing how you launch content, but it introduces a visible camera and a calibration step.

If all of your viewing comes from a console, cable box, or streaming stick, an HDMI box avoids a camera and generally offers a simpler signal path. If half your viewing is from built-in apps, choose a screen-reading product or move those apps to an external HDMI streaming device.

Check resolution, refresh rate, and HDR before buying
Resolution and refresh rate
Resolution describes the number of pixels; refresh rate describes how often the image can update. A box that passes 4K/60Hz may be fine for films and ordinary streaming but can limit a console configured for 4K/120Hz. For high-frame-rate gaming, compare the box’s maximum at your actual resolution rather than relying on an “8K” label.

These are pass-through ceilings, not guarantees that every source, cable, receiver, and television combination will negotiate those modes. Confirm the exact model, firmware requirements, cable rating, and receiver or soundbar path. An AV receiver that accepts only HDMI 2.0 can reduce a signal to 4K/60Hz even when the sync box and TV support HDMI 2.1.

Philips Hue says the 8K model supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+ in addition to HDMI 2.1 formats. The Hue 4K FAQ also lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Your source and TV must support the same HDR format, and every device in the chain must pass it. If a receiver, switch, or cable fails that handshake, the TV may fall back to standard dynamic range or a lower mode.
Input count
The Hue 8K box accepts up to four HDMI devices directly. If you have more sources, Philips Hue says a splitter or AV receiver can expand the number of inputs. Adding another device also adds another possible compatibility point, so test the complete chain at the desired resolution and refresh rate.
Match the box to your lighting ecosystem
Sync hardware is only part of the system. Hue’s HDMI boxes send lighting data to a Hue Bridge, which controls compatible color lights placed in the Entertainment area. If you do not already own that bridge and those lights, include them in the total cost and installation plan. The Hue 8K documentation says up to ten Hue color-capable lights can be synchronized.
Philips Smart Lighting products are a separate proposition powered by the WiZ platform and controlled through the WiZ app; they are not interchangeable with Philips Hue simply because both product families use the Philips name. The Smart Lighting HDMI 2.1 kit includes a strip light, while Screen Sync is sold with its capture device and strip. Verify the platform printed on the box and in the app before assuming that existing lamps will pair.
Recommended Free Tools
A kit with a strip light can be cheaper and easier than assembling a bridge, box, and separate lamps, but it may provide less flexibility if you want several lamps around the room. Conversely, a bridge-based ecosystem can coordinate multiple compatible lights but has more components to configure.

Choose the correct TV-size variant
Strip lights are cut and positioned for a television’s perimeter, so buying the wrong diagonal range can leave gaps or excess material. Signify’s 2026 Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync variants cover 40–50-inch, 55–65-inch, and 75–85-inch televisions. Its HDMI 2.1 Sync Box with Strip Light is listed for 55–65-inch and 75–85-inch sets.
Measure the screen diagonally and check whether the manufacturer’s range describes the display size or the complete television chassis. Also check how the strip is expected to be mounted around corners and whether your wall leaves enough clearance for light to wash behind the set.

Recommendations by viewing situation
You use a console and an external streamer
Start with an HDMI 2.1 box whose pass-through ceiling matches your gaming target. For 4K/120Hz gaming, the Hue 8K box, Govee AI Sync Box Kit 2, or Philips Smart Lighting HDMI 2.1 box has a published specification in that range. Select among them based on the lighting ecosystem, TV-size fit, included strip, and current price. Do not choose the older Hue 4K box if 4K/120Hz is a requirement; its published ceiling is 4K/60Hz.
You watch mostly built-in TV apps
Choose a camera-based Screen Sync kit, or move the apps to a supported external streaming device connected through HDMI. Screen Sync is the direct way to include native apps and broadcast channels without changing your viewing habits. Allow space above the TV for the camera and follow the calibration instructions so the camera maps screen colors correctly.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
You already own Hue lights
The Hue 4K or 8K box can fit naturally because both use the Hue Bridge and Entertainment-area model. Pick the 8K version when you need 4K/120Hz, 8K/60Hz, or the newer HDMI 2.1 capability; pick the 4K version when 4K/60Hz and 1440p/120Hz cover your sources and its lower published price matters.
You want a simple strip-light bundle
Compare the included-strip kits from Philips Smart Lighting or Govee with the cost of a separate bridge and lamps. Confirm the kit’s diagonal range and app ecosystem first. A bundled strip does not automatically make a product compatible with your existing smart lights.
How to install an HDMI sync box
- Inventory every source. List consoles, streaming sticks, set-top boxes, disc players, soundbars, and AV receivers. Mark which device must run at 4K/120Hz, 4K/144Hz, Dolby Vision, or HDR10+.
- Choose the signal path. Connect each source to a sync-box input, connect the box output to a compatible TV HDMI input, and decide whether audio will return through eARC or travel through a receiver. Keep the number of intermediate switches and receivers as low as practical.
- Use suitable cables. For HDMI 2.1 modes, use cables rated for the required bandwidth and keep them within the lengths recommended by the device makers. Replace one cable at a time when troubleshooting so you can identify the failure point.
- Connect the lighting hardware. For Hue, connect or verify the Hue Bridge, add color-capable lights, and place them in the correct Entertainment area. For WiZ-based Philips Smart Lighting, use the WiZ app and the components supplied with the kit.
- Install the strip or lamps. Clean and dry the rear surface before applying adhesive. Leave room at corners and avoid bending the strip more sharply than the instructions allow.
- Update and configure. Install the manufacturer’s app, update the box and lights, select the correct TV or Entertainment area, and set brightness and intensity to comfortable levels.
- Test the highest-demand source first. With the console or PC set to its target mode, open the TV’s information panel and verify resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio. Then test the remaining sources.
- Calibrate a camera system. For Screen Sync, mount the camera centered above the display, follow the app’s screen-edge mapping, and check that bright objects at each corner produce light in the corresponding direction.
Troubleshooting common failures
The TV shows a black screen or drops to 60Hz
- Confirm that the source, sync box, receiver, cable, and TV input all support the requested mode.
- Bypass the AV receiver temporarily and connect the source directly to the sync box.
- Test a different HDMI cable and TV input.
- Check that the console or PC has not reverted to a lower-output setting after a failed handshake.
HDR or Dolby Vision is missing
Check format support at both ends and through every intermediate device. The Hue 8K and 4K documentation lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+, but a source, receiver, or television that lacks the format can still force fallback. Reconnect devices in order—TV, box, then source—to renegotiate HDMI.
The lights do not react while an app is open
If the app runs on the TV itself, this is expected behavior for an HDMI-only box. Launch the same service from an external HDMI streaming stick, or use a camera-based Screen Sync product that reads the display.
Only some lights synchronize
Verify that every lamp is color-capable, powered, added to the correct Entertainment area or WiZ room, and within the ecosystem’s communication range. For Hue, the documented limit is up to ten color-capable lights on the 8K box.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe camera effect looks offset
Recheck the camera’s center position, screen-edge mapping, and TV-size selection. Reflections, strong room lighting, or a camera that sees the bezel instead of the picture can shift the detected colors. Recalibrate after moving the television or changing its mount.

A practical buying checklist
- Are your sources HDMI devices, native TV apps, broadcast channels, or a mixture?
- Do you need 4K/120Hz, 4K/144Hz, 8K/60Hz, Dolby Vision, or HDR10+?
- Will a receiver, soundbar, splitter, or switch sit in the HDMI path?
- How many HDMI sources must connect directly? The Hue 8K box provides four inputs.
- Do you already own Hue, WiZ, or another compatible lighting ecosystem?
- Does the package include the strip, bridge, camera, power supply, and mounting materials you need?
- Does the strip variant match your TV’s diagonal range?
- What is the current total cost in your region, including required lights and accessories?
Use the checklist to eliminate incompatible products before comparing visual features. A box that cannot see your source or pass your required gaming mode cannot become suitable through software settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a TV sync box behind an AV receiver?
Yes, but the receiver must pass the source’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio formats. If it does not, connect the demanding source directly to the sync box or TV and test the receiver separately.
Does an 8K label mean I will get 4K at 120Hz?
No. Check the product’s separate resolution-and-refresh specifications. The Hue 8K and Philips Smart Lighting HDMI 2.1 box list 4K/120Hz, while Govee’s AI Sync Box Kit 2 listing states 4K/144Hz.
What is the difference between Philips Hue and Philips Smart Lighting sync products?
Hue boxes use the Hue Bridge and Hue Entertainment areas. Philips Smart Lighting products use the WiZ platform and WiZ app; Signify describes them as a distinct product proposition.
Are the listed prices guaranteed?
No. The figures are US prices or launch starting prices reported in 2026. Retailer promotions, region, bundle contents, and product generation can change the amount.
