For recording beside a live microphone, start with closed-back headphones: they help keep headphone audio from leaking into the mic. For mixing, open-back models can offer a more spacious presentation, but their sound escapes into the room. The right choice depends on the work, your audio output, and fit—not on a “best overall” label or a manufacturer’s frequency-range figure.

Choose headphones for the job you do

Recording vocals or instruments near a microphone

Closed-back headphones are the safer starting point for tracking. Their enclosed design provides better isolation from outside noise and reduces headphone leakage into a nearby microphone. That matters when a microphone is sensitive enough to capture the backing track or click playing in the headphones. beyerdynamic explains the trade-off between open- and closed-back designs.

Mixing and editing

Open-back headphones are often preferred for mixing because they can give a more spacious impression, but they are not suitable for every room or recording setup: sound leaks out, and outside noise comes in. Closed-back headphones can be a practical alternative when leakage is a concern. These are general design trade-offs, not proof that any one headphone will produce accurate mixes. beyerdynamic’s recommendations for its own open-back DT 900 PRO X and closed-back DT 700 PRO X are manufacturer guidance, not independent comparative measurements.

Studio headphone candidates by workflow

The models below are a shortlist, not a tested ranking. The available information does not establish a head-to-head comparison of nine headphones, so these recommendations are organized around the distinctions that can be supported.

Model Best fit What to know
Sony MDR-M1 Closed-back monitoring and production workflows Sony describes it as a reference monitor headphone with sound isolation. Sony lists a 5 Hz–80 kHz playback range, 50-ohm impedance, two detachable cable lengths, replaceable earpads, and 3.5 mm / 6.3 mm connectivity. The range is a manufacturer specification, not evidence of neutrality. Sony’s MDR-M1 specifications.
beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO Closed-back studio use where the exact impedance variant suits the source It is sold in multiple impedance versions intended for different playback setups. Check the variant rather than treating “DT 770 PRO” as one electrical specification; the manufacturer also describes replaceable components. beyerdynamic’s model comparison and guidance.
beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X Closed-back use with a 48-ohm option and detachable cable beyerdynamic lists a 48-ohm STELLAR.45 driver, 5–40,000 Hz range, and detachable 3 m cable. It is a distinct model from standard DT 770 PRO variants, which have fixed cables. The range is a manufacturer specification, not a measure of mix accuracy. beyerdynamic’s comparison.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Portable recording and flexible closed-back use MusicRadar describes it as portable and useful for recording outside the studio. Its review notes elevated lows and highs rather than a flat presentation, a tonal caveat to consider for mix work. MusicRadar lists 15 Hz–28 kHz as its frequency range; that figure alone does not establish accuracy. MusicRadar’s headphone roundup.
Shure SRH840A Closed-back recording and editing MusicRadar describes a studio-oriented design with a detachable cable, while noting that there are better choices for pure mixing. MusicRadar lists 5 Hz–25 kHz; this specification is not an independent measurement of tonal balance. MusicRadar’s headphone roundup.
Sennheiser HD 25 Portable recording and loud environments MusicRadar describes it as lightweight and on-ear. It may suit field use, but its on-ear design is not an over-ear substitute for every studio workflow. MusicRadar lists 16 Hz–22 kHz. MusicRadar’s headphone roundup.
Sony MDR-7506 Closed-back monitoring as a long-running studio workhorse MusicRadar describes it as durable and lists a 10 Hz–20 kHz frequency-response specification. That range does not establish universal neutrality or mix accuracy. MusicRadar’s headphone roundup.

MusicRadar’s source is a podcast-headphone roundup, so its descriptions provide editorial context rather than a direct studio-headphone ranking. The listed frequency ranges come from product specifications reported by the cited sources; they are not comparable independent performance tests.

How to check impedance and headphone output

Impedance is one compatibility check, not a standalone measure of sound quality. Before buying, look up the exact headphone variant and compare it with the headphone output on your interface, recorder, computer, or other source. Higher-impedance versions may require a stronger output; if the source cannot drive them adequately, they may not reach a useful listening level.

Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone
  • Neodymium magnets and 40 millimeter drivers for powerful, detailed sound.Specific uses for product : Professional audio system,Home audio system
  • Closed ear design provides comfort and outstanding reduction of external noises
  • 9.8 foot cord ends in gold plated plug and it is not detachable; 1/4 inch adapter included
  • Folds up for storage or travel in provided soft case
  • Frequency Response: 10 Hertz to 20 kilohertz
  1. Find the exact model and variant you intend to buy. DT 770 PRO versions have different impedances; the DT 770 PRO X is a separate 48-ohm model, while Sony lists the MDR-M1 at 50 ohms.
  2. Check the source device’s documentation for its headphone-output capability and recommended load, if provided.
  3. If those specifications do not establish compatibility, ask the device or headphone manufacturer rather than assuming that a connector adapter will solve an output-power limitation.

Do you need a headphone amp for 250-ohm studio headphones? Not automatically. Whether a separate amp is needed depends on the output driving them and the listening level you require. The cited information does not establish a universal device-by-device rule for 250-ohm headphones.

What to check beyond the model name

  • Isolation and leakage: For tracking beside a microphone, prioritize closed-back construction and a fit that seals comfortably.
  • Comfort over a session: Consider clamping pressure, ear coverage, weight, and earpad material. Replaceable earpads can help with maintenance, but fit is personal.
  • Cable design: A detachable cable is easier to replace if it is damaged. Check cable length and connector needs for your setup.
  • Repairability: Confirm that replacement pads or other parts are available for the exact model and region before treating a design as serviceable.
  • Portability: For recording outside a fixed studio, factor in size, cable handling, and whether an on-ear model is acceptable.
  • Tonal expectations: Do not use a broad published frequency range as a shortcut for neutrality. It does not tell you how evenly a headphone reproduces frequencies or whether your mixes will translate.

How to make a dependable choice

First decide whether microphone isolation or an open presentation matters more in your working environment. Then verify the exact impedance against your source, try the fit if possible, and check the cable and replacement parts. For mix decisions, use familiar reference material and compare your work on other playback systems; no headphone specification by itself guarantees a reliable mix.
