The best soundbar for a Sony TV depends first on your exact BRAVIA model, then on whether you want Sony-specific integration, a simple single-bar installation, or a complete surround system. Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8 (HT-A8000), Bar 9 (HT-A9000), and Bar 6 are sensible integration candidates; Samsung’s HW-Q990F and Sonos Arc Ultra are useful alternatives when surround configuration, room fit, or independent testing matters more than matching brands.

Before buying, confirm the television’s labeled ARC or eARC port, the soundbar’s connection requirements, your country’s model availability, and whether the features you want are supported by that exact TV generation. No soundbar is automatically best for every Sony owner.

Complete surround package Samsung HW-Q990F AVForums names it its 2026 Best Soundbar System; that is an editorial recommendation, not Sony compatibility certification.
Premium standalone bar Sonos Arc Ultra AVForums names it its 2026 Best Standalone Soundbar, while What Hi-Fi lists it as a strong premium alternative. Check room layout and connection requirements.

These are candidates rather than a universal ranking. A bar with a subwoofer and rear speakers can create more discrete surround, but it needs additional floor or shelf space and usually costs more than a single bar. A standalone bar is easier to place and configure.

Think of the table as a shortlist for further checking, not a promise that any model will work with every BRAVIA feature. Your television model number, country, room and source devices can change the sensible choice. A reader replacing a basic television speaker setup has different needs from someone building a dedicated cinema system.

What must be compatible with your Sony TV

ARC or eARC is the basic audio path

Look at the labels beside the TV’s HDMI sockets. Sony says the compatible socket is marked ARC or eARC; not every HDMI input on a BRAVIA supports audio return. Connect that labeled TV port to the soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. A bar can work with a Sony TV through this standard connection even when Sony-only integration features are unavailable.

eARC offers the wider audio-format path when both devices support it. ARC may still be entirely adequate for a simpler system, but the usable formats are determined by the TV, soundbar, source device and their settings together. A television with eARC does not automatically give an ARC-only bar eARC capability, and an eARC bar cannot create eARC output from an ARC-only set.

Sony integration is a separate question

Features such as Acoustic Center Sync, My Cinema and Effortless control with BRAVIA TV are not generic benefits that every Sony television receives. Sony publishes separate compatibility lists for each feature, and the eligible audio products and BRAVIA generations differ. Its lists include 2026, 2025, 2024 and earlier models, but Sony warns that availability can vary by country or region.

Use the full TV model code—not just “BRAVIA 9” or “X90”—when checking compatibility. Keep the TV and soundbar firmware current, and confirm the feature in the manual for your market. A Sony-branded bar may provide ordinary TV audio through ARC/eARC while lacking a particular synchronized-center or control function on your model.

Do not treat a matching logo as a technical guarantee. The same product family can have different regional names, and a firmware revision can affect what appears in the television menu. If a feature is important, save the Sony compatibility page and the manuals for both devices before buying; this makes it easier to check whether a later software update or regional limitation explains a missing option.

How the leading candidates differ

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8 (HT-A8000)

The Bar 8 is a logical first comparison for owners who value Sony’s ecosystem and want a single-bar installation. Investigate it against the feature list for your BRAVIA rather than assuming every advertised integration mode will activate. Its suitability still depends on whether your room benefits from adding a compatible subwoofer or rear speakers.

It is most sensible when you want to begin with one enclosure and preserve the option of expanding later. Expansion is not universal, however: verify the approved accessory combinations for the exact bar and region. If the television is mounted, also check the bar’s physical width and the clearance around the screen and remote sensor before ordering.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000)

The Bar 9 is another Sony integration candidate, but it should not be declared the automatic best buy. RTINGS describes its standalone arrangement as a 5.0.2-like configuration and notes that it is less immersive than systems supplied with satellite speakers and a subwoofer. That distinction matters if your priority is enveloping effects for films and games rather than a clean, low-clutter installation.

Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 5, 3.1ch Home Theater Soundbar & Wireless Sub
  • SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Experience authentic cinema surround sound in your living room. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X create an immersive multi-dimensional soundscape that brings movies to life with the creator’s intent.
  • CENTER SPEAKER FOR CLEAR DIALOGUE: Catch every word in the scene with a dedicated center channel speaker that ensures voices remain clear across all content.
  • WIRELESS SUBWOOFER INCLUDED: A powerful wireless subwoofer with a large 160mm speaker unit delivers a deeper, richer bass sound.
  • SOUND FROM ABOVE: Experience sound positioned in vertical space with Sony's Vertical Surround Engine, no in-ceiling or up-firing speakers needed.
  • SOUNDS FROM SIDES: Hear a wide surround field using only front speakers with digital S-Force Pro.

For a small or visually minimalist room, the simpler configuration may be the deciding advantage. For a larger seating area, compare the complete cost and placement requirements of adding the compatible subwoofer and rear speakers against buying a bundled surround system from the outset.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6

The Bar 6 gives Sony TV owners another tier to investigate. Sony includes it among products supporting specified BRAVIA features, but the exact TV generation, software and regional model still determine what works. Confirm the current local product designation before ordering accessories or optional speakers.

Check whether the local package includes the components you expect and whether a separately sold speaker kit is supported. Product names and inventory can differ by country, so compare the model code on the retailer listing with Sony’s support documentation rather than relying only on a shortened name.

Samsung HW-Q990F

This is a full surround-system comparison point rather than a Sony integration product. AVForums lists the HW-Q990F as its 2026 Best Soundbar System. A package with rear speakers and a subwoofer may suit a large room or a listener who wants clearly separated surround channels, provided you can place and power all of the components.

With a non-Sony system, the normal ARC/eARC connection remains the compatibility baseline, but Sony’s Acoustic Center Sync and related BRAVIA controls should not be assumed. Count the extra power outlets, stands or shelves, and cable routes when comparing it with a single bar.

Sonos Arc Ultra

The Arc Ultra is a premium standalone comparison. AVForums lists it as its 2026 Best Standalone Soundbar, and What Hi-Fi identifies it as a strong alternative in a premium multi-speaker comparison. It does not turn Sony-specific controls into universal features, so evaluate it on standalone-bar operation, room fit and the rest of your audio system.

It can be the more coherent comparison for someone who prefers one bar and an established multi-room ecosystem, while a Sony candidate may make more sense when BRAVIA-specific control or center-channel integration is the priority. Confirm the required network, app and HDMI setup in the current manual before purchase.

Choose a system that fits the room

When a single bar makes sense

  • You want one device below the screen with minimal cable and speaker placement work.
  • Your room has little space beside or behind the seating position.
  • You value Sony integration or a tidy setup more than discrete rear effects.
  • You are willing to add a compatible subwoofer later if bass or scale is insufficient.

Placement still affects the result. Keep the bar centered under the screen, avoid blocking the television’s lower edge or remote sensor, and leave the openings unobstructed. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for wall mounting or furniture placement rather than pushing the enclosure into a closed shelf.

Sony HT-S400 2.1ch Soundbar for TV with Powerful Wireless Subwoofer
  • IMMERSIVE SURROUND SOUND: S-Force PRO Front Surround and Dolby Digital create cinematic style surround sound.
  • ENJOY CLEAR DIALOGUE AND POWERFUL SOUND: Powerful audio technology, such as the X-Balanced Speaker Unit and Separated Notch Edge, works to deliver wide-ranging sound and enhanced vocal clarity.
  • SIMPLE & EASY OPERATION: The simple, compact remote control and convenient OLED display window make operation a breeze.
  • WIRELESS SUBWOOFER INCLUDED: A powerful wireless subwoofer with a large 160mm speaker unit delivers a deeper, richer bass sound.
  • EASY WIRELESS CONNECTION: Flexible layout and wireless connection to compatible BRAVIA TVs minimizes cable clutter.

When a complete surround package is better

  • You have clear positions for rear speakers and a subwoofer.
  • Immersive film and game effects matter more than the simplest installation.
  • You can keep the rear speakers within their required power and wireless range.
  • You have checked that optional speakers are approved for the exact soundbar model.

A complete package brings more setup decisions: each rear speaker needs a suitable position and power, the subwoofer needs room to operate without being trapped, and wireless components may need a stable connection. If the seating is against a wall or the room is very narrow, a single bar can be the more practical choice even when a larger package promises more channels.

Do not assume accessories cross between generations. Sony’s optional-speaker compatibility guidance lists the supported combinations; check the exact model before buying a rear-speaker kit: Sony’s optional-speaker compatibility list.

Budget and ownership trade-offs

Prices and stock change by country, retailer and date, so set a budget in your local currency and compare complete packages rather than the headline bar alone. A standalone bar usually has the lowest installation and accessory burden. A package with a subwoofer and rear speakers generally costs more and may require stands, extension leads or additional furniture, but it can deliver a more discrete surround layout.

Include the cost of any compatible expansion speakers when comparing the Bar 8 or Bar 9 with a bundled system. Conversely, do not buy optional modules simply because a product can accept them; add them only when your room, listening priorities and available placement justify the extra expense. A certified HDMI cable may be useful for a demanding eARC signal path, but Sony’s 18 Gbps guidance is not a reason to replace a working cable without a format or connection problem.

Allow for regional availability as well as price. Sony says not every listed television or audio product is sold in every country, and the local model code may differ. Verify return terms and support coverage before committing to a combination whose feature support depends on a particular firmware version.

Connect a soundbar to a Sony TV

  1. Identify both ports. Read the labels on the TV and soundbar and confirm ARC or eARC support in both manuals. Use the TV socket specifically marked ARC/eARC.
  2. Make the HDMI connection. Connect the labeled TV port to the soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC output or input as described by that bar’s manual. Do not use an unlabeled TV HDMI input and expect audio return.
  3. Select the audio system on the TV. On supported Sony menus, open Settings → Display & Sound → Audio output → Speakers → Audio system. Labels can vary with model and software.
  4. Set eARC correctly. Where the TV offers an eARC setting, choose Auto. Check the soundbar’s own manual for an eARC mode or equivalent setting.
  5. Configure external sources. For a console, Blu-ray player or streaming box, check whether it connects to the TV or soundbar, which audio formats it outputs, and whether the receiving device supports them.
  6. Test every path. Play audio from a TV app and from each external input separately. If one source is silent or falls back to a lower format, recheck the labeled ports, TV output selection, source format setting and cable route.

Make one change at a time while testing. First establish reliable audio from a built-in TV app, then add the console, disc player or streaming box. This isolates whether the fault is the return channel, an external source setting or the soundbar itself. Record which source is connected to which HDMI socket so a later cable change does not create a new routing problem.

HDMI cable guidance: what you actually need

For the eARC connection described in its support guide, Sony recommends an HDMI cable capable of 18 Gbps. Sony also says an ordinary High-Speed HDMI cable can restrict certain high-quality audio formats from an external source. That is a signal-path warning, not proof that every Sony TV and soundbar requires a premium cable upgrade.

Use a certified cable that matches the bandwidth required by your TV, soundbar and source. If basic TV audio works but a high-bandwidth format fails, test the cable and the routing before changing unrelated settings. The official connection procedure and its cable qualification are documented by Sony USA Support.

Troubleshoot common failures

No sound at all

  • Verify that the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled socket and the soundbar’s ARC/eARC socket.
  • Set the TV speakers to Audio system using the audio-output path above.
  • Confirm the bar is on the correct HDMI input and that its volume is not muted.
  • Power-cycle the TV and bar after correcting the connection.

TV apps work but a console or player does not

The external device may be using a different audio format or a different HDMI route. Check its output setting, the TV’s pass-through or digital-audio setting, and whether the cable path supports the format. Test the source connected directly to the soundbar only if the bar’s manual supports that arrangement.

eARC is unavailable or keeps reverting

Confirm that both products support eARC, set the TV’s eARC mode to Auto where offered, and check the soundbar’s setting. Update both devices. If the TV or bar supports only ARC, eARC-specific formats and menus will not appear.

A promised Sony feature does not appear

Recheck the complete model codes, region and firmware against Sony’s feature-specific lists. Acoustic Center Sync, My Cinema and Effortless control with BRAVIA TV have different eligible combinations; a compatible connection alone does not enable all three.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sound cuts out after changing equipment

Undo the latest change and restore the known-working TV-app test. Then inspect the entire HDMI path, including any switch, receiver or source device between the television and bar. A setting that works for one input does not prove that every source supports the same format.

What independent testing can—and cannot—tell you

RTINGS reports a testing corpus of 256 soundbars on its sound-quality and review pages. That figure describes the size of its tested collection, not the number of soundbars sold worldwide and not proof that one model is superior for your room. Its test methodology and model reviews are available at RTINGS soundbar tests and RTINGS soundbar reviews.

Reviews also reflect reviewer judgment. In its June 18, 2026 review of the BRAVIA Theatre Trio, What Hi-Fi wrote: The scale, cohesion, precision and bass performance are all outstanding. That is an assessment of that review unit and listening context, not a controlled claim that every Sony bar will sound the same in every room. Read the full review at What Hi-Fi’s BRAVIA Theatre Trio review.

For additional model context, see AVForums’ 2026 soundbar selections and What Hi-Fi’s 2026 Sony soundbar guide. Neither page replaces checking your TV’s exact compatibility list.

Information to collect before you buy

  • The full Sony TV model code and country or region.
  • Whether the TV has ARC or eARC, and which HDMI socket carries it.
  • Your budget in local currency; prices and inventory change by geography and date.
  • Room size, seating position and available space for a subwoofer or rear speakers.
  • Whether you prefer a single bar or a complete surround package.
  • Your main sources—TV apps, console, disc player or streaming box—and desired audio formats.
  • Whether Acoustic Center Sync, My Cinema or Effortless control with BRAVIA TV is a deciding feature.
  • The furniture or wall-mount position where the bar will sit, including clearance for the screen and remote sensor.
  • Whether you are prepared to run power to rear speakers and accommodate a subwoofer.

A public BRAVIA discussion captures the practical version of this decision: “Thinking of adding a soundbar to my BRAVIA 9—how do Sony’s models actually sound?” The useful answer starts with the model code and room requirements, not with a universal ranking.

Decision checklist

  1. Write down the complete television model code and sales region.
  2. Locate the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI socket and confirm the bar has the matching connection.
  3. Decide whether Sony-specific features are essential or whether ordinary ARC/eARC audio is sufficient.
  4. Choose between one bar and a package with a subwoofer and rear speakers based on room space and listening goals.
  5. Check the exact optional-speaker pairing before budgeting for future expansion.
  6. Confirm source-device routing and the cable bandwidth needed for the formats you actually use.
  7. Update both devices and test TV apps and every external input before judging the final setup.

Bottom line

Start with the Sony TV’s ARC/eARC port and the feature list for its exact generation. Choose the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8, Bar 9 or Bar 6 when Sony integration and a streamlined setup are priorities; compare the HW-Q990F when you want a supplied surround system; and consider the Arc Ultra when a premium standalone bar is the better room fit. Treat cable quality, optional speakers, firmware and regional availability as part of compatibility—not afterthoughts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a non-Sony soundbar work with a Sony BRAVIA TV?

Yes. A compatible bar can receive TV audio through the TV’s ARC or eARC connection. Sony-only features such as Acoustic Center Sync and certain BRAVIA controls require the specific model combinations Sony lists.

Do I need eARC to use a soundbar with a Sony TV?

No. ARC can carry TV audio when both devices support it. eARC is relevant when your equipment and sources require its broader audio-format capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether rear speakers can be added later?

Check the soundbar’s manual and Sony’s exact optional-speaker compatibility list before purchasing a kit. Compatibility is model-specific, and accessories from another generation may not work.

Why should I provide the TV’s full model code when asking for a recommendation?

Sony feature support varies by BRAVIA generation, software and region. A family name alone cannot establish whether Acoustic Center Sync, My Cinema or Effortless control will work.

Is the Sony Bar 9 automatically the best soundbar for a Sony TV?

No. RTINGS describes its standalone arrangement as a 5.0.2-like configuration and notes that systems with satellite speakers and a subwoofer can be more immersive. The Bar 9 may still suit someone who prioritizes Sony integration and a simpler installation.

Should I buy a premium HDMI cable for my soundbar?

Sony recommends an 18 Gbps-capable cable for its described eARC setup and warns that an ordinary High-Speed HDMI cable can restrict some high-quality formats from an external source. A premium replacement is not automatically necessary if your existing cable works for your required signal path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my TV app work while my console has no sound?

The external device may use a different audio format or HDMI route. Check the console’s output setting, the TV’s pass-through or digital-audio setting, the cable path and the soundbar’s supported inputs. Test one source at a time.

What information should I have ready before choosing a soundbar?

Have the full TV model code, country, ARC/eARC port, budget, room dimensions and seating layout, source devices, audio-format needs, and preference for a single bar or complete surround package.

Are the listed soundbar recommendations available everywhere?

Not necessarily. Sony says listed TV and audio models can vary by country or region. Confirm the local model code, inventory and support documentation before ordering.

The Bottom Line

Match the soundbar to your exact Sony TV, room and system goals. Verify ARC/eARC, Sony feature eligibility, optional-speaker pairings, cable routing and regional availability before you buy.
