The best Shikigami is the one that fits your assigned role, remains effective on the current patch, and whose weaknesses you can manage—not automatically the highest name on a tier list. For a dated starting point, Pocket Gamer’s Version 3.333 list, updated October 7, 2026, places two Shikigami in S+ top, six in mid, three in marksman, seven in support, and four in jungle. Use those names as a shortlist, then choose the character you understand well and verify the live patch before queueing.
What “best” means in Onmyoji Arena
“Best” is not a single universal ranking. It is a decision that combines three things:
- Role fit: the Shikigami is listed for the lane or role you expect to play.
- Current relevance: the pick appears in a recent, clearly dated tier snapshot or remains appropriate after the latest balance changes.
- Execution: you know the character’s game plan and can limit the weaknesses that opponents are likely to exploit.
Pocket Gamer explicitly presents its tier list as editorial guidance rather than an official leaderboard. It also notes that understanding a Shikigami and handling its weaknesses can matter more than tier placement, particularly at lower ranks. That makes the list useful for narrowing your choices, not for deciding your character without considering your own experience.
The evidence available for Version 3.333 does not establish a win rate, pick rate, ban rate, matchup chart, or beginner-difficulty ranking for any of the listed Shikigami. Do not treat an S+ label as a promise of victory or as proof that one name is mechanically easier than another.

The current S+ shortlist by lane and role
The following names are the S+ placements in Pocket Gamer’s Version 3.333 list, updated October 7, 2026. The counts are simply the number of names in that list; they are not performance statistics.
| Role | S+ Shikigami in Version 3.333 | Number of S+ entries | How to use the list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Tanjiro Kamado; Kani Hime | 2 | Compare the two with your familiarity, lane plan, and ability to manage each character’s weaknesses. |
| Mid | Inaba Kaguya; Nyuunai-suzume; Hoshiguma Doji; Ungaikyo; Maestro; Senhime | 6 | Start with the names you already understand; do not assume the six are interchangeable. |
| Marksman | Mahamayuri; Kidomaru; Enma | 3 | Use the shortlist to identify candidates, then verify which one suits your positioning and team plan. |
| Support | Mushishi; Nezuko Kamado; Momo; Akaname; Hako Shoujo; Kusa; Tenjo Kudari | 7 | Choose the support whose decisions and limitations you can execute consistently for the team. |
| Jungle | Wukong; Itsumade; Furi; Kainin | 4 | Check the live jungle rules and economy before relying on an older recommendation. |
The list is a snapshot tied to Version 3.333. It does not say that every name is equally suitable for every matchup, nor does it supply a universal order within a lane. A lower-tier character that you know thoroughly can be a better practical choice than an S+ character you have barely played.
A repeatable method for choosing your Shikigami
1. Lock the role before comparing characters
Decide whether you are filling top, mid, marksman, support, or jungle. A character can be highly regarded in one role and still be a poor answer to the job your team needs in another. If you are selecting during a draft, use the role you have actually been assigned rather than choosing a favorite first and trying to force it into an unsuitable position.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute2. Build a short candidate list
Take the S+ names for your role from the table above. If none is familiar, include a character you have already used successfully, even if it appears in a lower tier. The purpose of this stage is to create two or three realistic options, not to memorize every tier.
3. Separate knowledge from reputation
For each candidate, ask whether you know its basic ability sequence, effective range, resource limits, defensive options, and common failure state. You do not need a theoretical answer for every mechanic, but you should know what you are trying to accomplish in a normal exchange and what you do when the opponent prevents that plan. Familiarity is especially valuable at lower ranks, where consistent decisions often matter more than a small difference in meta placement.
4. Check the current version
Before treating a tier placement as current, read the latest in-game patch information. The official March 28, 2025 balance update changed top-lane pressure and also changed jungle mechanics and economy, including Hunt Reserve. That update is a concrete reminder that role advice can age when rules, incentives, or resource systems change. It does not prove that the same changes remain in the October 2026 build; it shows why you must check the present patch instead of copying an old recommendation.
5. Examine the live tooltips and practice tools
Use the current client’s Shikigami information and practice features to confirm what the character does now. Look for the actual damage, cooldown, range, resource, and control values shown in your edition of the game. Test the basic sequence you expect to use, how quickly you can disengage, and whether you can recover after a missed ability. This is more reliable than assuming an older guide still describes the character.

6. Choose the option you can repeat
When two candidates remain, select the one for which you can perform the ordinary plan under pressure. A slightly less fashionable choice that you can position correctly, recognize when to retreat with, and use around objectives is usually more useful than a theoretically stronger pick that produces frequent mechanical errors.
How to choose a top-lane Shikigami
Current shortlist
Version 3.333 lists Tanjiro Kamado and Kani Hime in S+ for top. There are only two names in this category, so the list is a starting pair rather than a complete explanation of how either one works.
Questions to answer before locking one
- Which candidate’s ordinary lane pattern do you already understand?
- Can you identify when a trade has stopped being favorable and leave safely?
- Can you continue contributing when the opponent denies your preferred exchange?
- Does your team need the type of pressure or utility that your chosen character can actually provide on the current patch?
Do not infer a specific counter, build, skill order, or matchup advantage from the S+ label. The cited list does not provide those details. If you are deciding between Tanjiro Kamado and Kani Hime, play the one whose effective range, timing, and defensive limits you can describe from the current client, then use a few practice games to confirm that the plan remains comfortable.
When a familiar lower-tier pick is sensible
If neither S+ option is familiar and you have a lower-tier top-lane character with a dependable plan, that character may be the better choice for your current rank. The tier list itself cautions that knowledge and weakness management can outweigh placement, especially outside the highest levels of play.

Current shortlist
The Version 3.333 S+ mid list contains Inaba Kaguya, Nyuunai-suzume, Hoshiguma Doji, Ungaikyo, Maestro, and Senhime. Six names give you more room to match a character to your habits, but they do not establish an internal ranking or a universal best choice.
Use a two-stage comparison
- Compare what you can execute: choose the candidates whose current abilities, ranges, and retreat options you understand.
- Compare what the team needs: among those candidates, select the one whose normal plan fits your composition and the way the opposing draft is developing.
Keep the second comparison qualitative unless you have current, trustworthy evidence for a specific matchup. No verified statistic in the cited material establishes which of these six has the highest win rate, the safest lane, or the lowest skill floor. A confident player on one familiar option can therefore outperform a player who picked another name solely because it appeared on a list.
Mid-lane checks in practice
- Can you clear or contest the lane without spending every resource?
- Can you recognize when leaving the lane helps your team and when it abandons a losing position?
- Do you know what your character contributes when the opponent avoids a direct fight?
- After a failed attempt, can you state the weakness you exposed and adjust the next sequence?
These are decision checks, not claims that every listed Shikigami has the same tools. Verify the relevant mechanics in the current client for the specific name you select.

How to choose a marksman
Current shortlist
Version 3.333 places Mahamayuri, Kidomaru, and Enma in S+ for marksman. The list identifies candidates; it does not publish their ranges, damage profiles, item requirements, or matchup counters.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Prioritize repeatable positioning
For a marksman choice, start with the candidate whose attack pattern and safety rules you can follow while watching the rest of the fight. In practice, that means knowing when you are allowed to step forward, which threats force you to hold your escape or defensive tool, and how you continue dealing damage after the first target disappears. Confirm each answer from the live ability descriptions rather than borrowing assumptions from another game or an older guide.
Do not confuse a high tier with permission to overextend
An S+ placement does not remove the need for spacing, vision, or patience. If your preferred marksman repeatedly dies before contributing because you do not yet recognize its danger signals, a familiar alternative may produce more value. The evidence does not support naming one of Mahamayuri, Kidomaru, or Enma as universally easiest or strongest in every matchup.
How to choose a support Shikigami
Current shortlist
The support S+ group is the largest in Version 3.333: Mushishi, Nezuko Kamado, Momo, Akaname, Hako Shoujo, Kusa, and Tenjo Kudari. Seven entries should be read as a broad set of viable editorial recommendations, not as evidence that support has a measurable seven-way advantage over other roles.
Choose the support decisions you can make consistently
- Can you identify when your partner needs protection, space, or permission to disengage?
- Can you communicate your important cooldowns and avoid using them without a purpose?
- Can you contribute when the lane partner is absent or the early plan fails?
- Can you recognize the point at which helping a teammate is less valuable than preserving your own position?
Use the current tooltips to determine which of these questions apply to each candidate. The cited tier list does not provide a beginner ranking, ability-by-ability comparison, or counter chart for the seven names. Pick the one whose timing and limitations you can explain, then practice those decisions rather than changing characters after every difficult game.

Why familiarity matters particularly here
Support choices often affect teammates’ opportunities, so uncertainty can be costly even when the character is highly rated. A support you understand well can make clearer protection, initiation, or disengagement decisions than an unfamiliar S+ option. That is an application of the list’s general familiarity warning, not a claim that every support has identical responsibilities.

Verify the rules before judging the character
Jungle recommendations are especially sensitive to system changes. The official March 28, 2025 update addressed jungle mechanics and economy, including Hunt Reserve. That historical change means an older route, timing assumption, or economy judgment may no longer apply. Check the current patch notes and the current in-game rules before deciding that a jungle pick is weak or strong because of an older guide.
Use an evidence-based jungle test
- Read the current jungle rules and note any resource or reserve mechanic that changes your early choices.
- In practice, confirm that you can complete your intended opening without losing control of your health, time, or resources.
- Test whether you can recognize a realistic opportunity to help a lane and when continuing your route is safer.
- Review the result by identifying whether the problem came from the character, the patch rules, or an execution mistake.
The four names are a shortlist, not proof of a particular clear speed, gank rate, or objective advantage. No such measured statistic is established by the cited material.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

When a draft leaves you with two plausible names, use the following comparison sheet. It keeps the decision tied to evidence you can actually verify.
| Decision axis | Question to answer | What counts as a useful answer |
|---|---|---|
| Role fit | Is the character listed for the role you are filling? | The role matches the current list and your team’s assignment. |
| Dated relevance | Where does it appear in Version 3.333? | Record the S+ placement as a dated editorial reference, not a guarantee. |
| Familiarity | Can you describe the normal plan and failure state? | You know what to attempt, when to stop, and how to recover. |
| Weakness management | What can opponents punish, and how will you respond? | You have a practical adjustment rather than assuming the tier solves it. |
| Patch fit | Have the latest rules changed this role’s incentives? | You checked current notes, especially for systems such as jungle economy. |
Do not add fake precision by assigning made-up scores for win rate, ban rate, or pick rate. Those statistics were not verified for this shortlist. If you cannot answer an axis, mark it as unknown and use the candidate you understand better while you gather current information.
A practical process for new and returning players
If you are new to the game
- Choose one role you genuinely expect to play.
- Select one familiar or approachable candidate from that role’s current shortlist rather than trying to learn several at once.
- Read the live ability descriptions and use the practice features to repeat the basic sequence until it is reliable.
- Play enough games to identify one recurring mistake, then adjust that mistake before changing characters.
- Add a second candidate only after you can explain the first character’s main plan and weakness.
If you are returning after a break
- Check the current version number and balance notes first.
- Re-read the character’s current tooltips; do not assume your previous memory is accurate.
- Re-test the role’s economy and timing, with special attention to systems that may have changed.
- Use the October 7, 2026 Version 3.333 shortlist as a comparison point, then replace it with newer information if the game has moved to another version.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Picking only by the S+ label
Problem: You select a highly rated name without knowing its plan and lose to ordinary execution errors.
Correction: Keep the tier as a shortlist, then favor the candidate whose abilities and weaknesses you understand.
Assuming the list is official
Problem: You treat Pocket Gamer’s placement as an in-game ranking or guarantee.

Correction: Treat it as a dated editorial snapshot. The official game update and the editorial tier list serve different purposes.
Using old jungle or lane assumptions
Problem: You follow a route or economy judgment that predates a system change.
Correction: Read the current patch notes and verify the live rules in-game. The March 28, 2025 update demonstrates why this check matters.
Changing characters after every loss
Problem: You never learn whether the failure came from your decision, the matchup, or the character.
Correction: Keep a short practice block with one candidate, record the repeated failure, and change only after you understand what the character can and cannot do.
Looking for a counter chart that has not been verified
Problem: You rely on a confident-sounding matchup claim without current evidence.
Correction: Use the live ability descriptions and your own practice observations. The cited material does not establish a complete current counter chart.

How often to revisit your choice
Revisit a recommendation whenever the game changes version, the official notes alter a role’s rules, or your own familiarity changes. A tier list dated October 7, 2026 should not be presented as timeless advice. Keep the date attached to the placement, and check whether a newer list has replaced Version 3.333 before using it for a later patch.
Between patches, do not abandon a character solely because another name looks more fashionable. If you can execute your current pick, understand its weaknesses, and adapt to the present rules, that practical knowledge remains part of the decision.
Bottom line
Use the Version 3.333 S+ names as role-specific starting points: Tanjiro Kamado or Kani Hime for top; Inaba Kaguya, Nyuunai-suzume, Hoshiguma Doji, Ungaikyo, Maestro, or Senhime for mid; Mahamayuri, Kidomaru, or Enma for marksman; Mushishi, Nezuko Kamado, Momo, Akaname, Hako Shoujo, Kusa, or Tenjo Kudari for support; and Wukong, Itsumade, Furi, or Kainin for jungle. Then make the final choice using current patch information, your familiarity, and your ability to manage the character’s weaknesses. That process is more dependable than treating a dated tier label as a guarantee.
