The best motorcycle lock is the one that matches where you park, how far you carry it, and whether you can attach the bike to a fixed anchor. A compact disc lock is convenient and immobilizes a wheel; a chain-and-lock combination can prevent the motorcycle being lifted away when it is looped through a suitable anchor. Alarmed disc locks add an audible warning, but an alarm is not a substitute for tested mechanical resistance.
There is no single lock that is best for every rider. Compare the exact model, physical fit, independently tested grade, portability, alarm requirements, local theft risk and your insurer’s conditions before buying. The guide below uses the categories and certification information published by Secured by Design, Sold Secure and manufacturer specifications.
Start with how and where the motorcycle is parked
Security requirements change sharply between a short stop outside a café, a daily commute, and an overnight parking space. Decide the attack you need to resist before comparing brands or features. A lock that is excellent for carrying in a tail bag may be impractical in a garage, while a heavy chain that suits a home anchor may be too burdensome for every ride.
Short stops and mobile parking
A disc lock is small enough to carry on most rides and fits through a hole in the brake disc. When fitted, it prevents the wheel from rotating normally. Its value is portability and speed: you can use it whenever there is no anchor, but the motorcycle is not physically connected to another object. A thief may still be able to lift or carry the motorcycle, so a disc lock is an immobiliser rather than an attachment system.

Use the steering lock as an additional layer, not as a replacement for a separate security device. Park where the motorcycle is visible and where an attempted removal is more likely to be noticed. A lock that remains in your luggage because it is awkward to carry provides no protection at all, so weight, case size and access to the key matter as much as a specification on the package.
Home, apartment and overnight parking
A chain or lock-and-chain combination is more useful when a thief could otherwise lift or roll the motorcycle into a vehicle. Pass the chain through a substantial part of the frame or another manufacturer-approved attachment point, then through a ground or wall anchor that is designed for motorcycles. Do not rely on a removable wheel if the chain can simply be slipped off after the wheel is removed. Keep the chain off the ground where practical; a supported chain gives fewer easy surfaces for cutting tools and reduces opportunities to hammer it against the pavement.
Measure the actual route before ordering. A chain that is technically long but cannot reach the frame and anchor without lying on the floor is a poor fit. Conversely, excessive slack adds weight and can make positioning harder. The lock body must also fit through the anchor eye and chain link while leaving enough room to operate the key.

A permanently installed ground or wall anchor makes sense only where drilling and structural fixing are permitted. Secured by Design lists graded motorcycle anchors, chains, disc locks and combinations. An anchor that is poorly fixed, attached to weak masonry or installed where it can be attacked from all sides may become the weakest part of the system. Follow the anchor maker’s fixing instructions and consider whether the substrate, fasteners and surrounding space allow the lock to be protected from direct tool access.
Apartment residents should obtain the owner’s or landlord’s permission before drilling. In shared garages, confirm that the anchor does not obstruct access or create a trip hazard. For rented premises, a portable chain-and-lock setup may be more practical than a permanent installation, even if the latter would be stronger in a private garage.

Motorcycle lock formats compared
| Format | What it does | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable disc lock | Blocks wheel rotation by passing a pin through the brake disc | Daily rides, short stops and situations without an anchor | Does not attach the motorcycle to a fixed object |
| Alarmed disc lock | Provides the same wheel immobilisation with an audible alarm feature | Visible parking where an alert may deter or attract attention | The alarm is separate from the underlying mechanical certification; batteries, sensitivity and local noise rules matter |
| Chain and padlock | Connects the motorcycle to a suitable fixed anchor | Home, garage, workplace or other repeat parking with an anchor | Heavier and less convenient to transport; chain length and attachment geometry must fit |
| Lock-and-chain combination | Combines a purpose-made lock body with a matching chain | Overnight or higher-risk parking where portability is less important | Security depends on the exact lock, chain, anchor and how the system is installed |
| Ground or wall anchor | Creates the fixed attachment point for a chain | A permitted, permanent parking location | Requires suitable structure, installation and protection from attack |
Secured by Design treats disc locks, chains, anchors and combinations as complementary security measures rather than interchangeable products. A disc lock can be carried every day, while a chain and anchor can protect the motorcycle where it is stored. Combining independent layers can also make it less convenient to attack the bike, but every layer still needs to be fitted correctly.
Understand what a Sold Secure grade means
Sold Secure says it is “dedicated to reducing the risk of crime by the assessment of security products.” Its grades describe performance against a defined test specification. The specification can differ by product category, attack type, tools and test time, so a grade should be compared only with the applicable standard and exact model.
| Sold Secure grade | Sold Secure’s published description | How to use it when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Basic tool list aimed at opportunist crime | Consider for lower-risk situations where the insurer and location do not require a higher grade |
| Silver | Enhanced tool list | Use the exact product listing and standard to confirm what the grade covers |
| Gold | Dedicated tool list | Often relevant to motorcycles and higher-value parking, subject to your insurer’s requirement |
| Diamond | Specialist tools and the most destructive attacks, potentially including angle grinders | Sold Secure’s highest level; still a test grade, not a promise that theft is impossible |
These labels are meaningful only alongside the product category and standard. A Gold product in one category is not automatically equivalent to every other Gold product, because the test tools and attack assumptions may differ. Do not rank locks solely by the largest word or number on a retailer’s photograph.
A certification grade is not a prediction of how long a thief will take in every real-world situation. Sold Secure testing is performed to a defined specification, and a thief may attack the motorcycle, anchor, storage location or another component instead. Check the current approval for the exact model in Sold Secure’s approved-product search. Sold Secure notes that product descriptions are supplied by certification holders, so read the listing and the manufacturer’s current instructions together. Save a copy of the approval details with your receipt if your insurer asks for evidence later.
Check fit before you compare security claims
Disc-lock fit
- Measure the brake-disc hole and confirm that the lock pin can pass through it without touching the caliper, spokes or other moving parts.
- Check the manufacturer’s motorcycle or scooter compatibility list. A lock marketed for a light motorcycle may not fit a larger machine.
- Confirm that the lock body clears the disc and wheel when installed. If it can be fitted incorrectly or cannot be removed without damage, it is not a practical choice.
- Check whether the pin diameter and insertion depth suit the disc. A lock that enters only partway or sits at an angle may not close properly.
- Use a reminder cable or another visual reminder if the design permits one. Riding away with a disc lock fitted can damage the motorcycle.
- After installation, turn the handlebar and roll the motorcycle a few centimetres only while stationary to confirm the lock engages as intended; never test by riding.
Chain and anchor fit
- Measure the route from the anchor to the motorcycle’s frame or approved attachment point. Include slack needed to insert the lock without leaving the chain on the ground.
- Ensure the chain cannot simply slide over the wheel or be removed without passing through the frame.
- Check that the anchor can accept the chain and lock body while keeping the mechanism accessible for locking and unlocking.
- For a permanent anchor, verify the substrate, fixing method and permission to drill. A strong chain cannot compensate for a weak installation.
- Look for sharp edges, exhaust heat and suspension movement along the planned route. The chain should not foul controls or damage painted parts when the motorcycle is moved.
- Use the smallest practical amount of slack and position the lock body away from the floor. Keep the keyway sheltered from standing water while retaining access.
When an alarm helps—and what it does not prove
An alarmed disc lock can make tampering conspicuous and may discourage a casual attempt, particularly in a visible parking area. Treat the alarm as an additional warning layer: check battery life, arming behavior, sensitivity, weather resistance and whether local rules restrict audible alarms. A very sensitive unit may trigger from wind or accidental contact, while a unit with a depleted battery may provide no warning.

The mechanical lock and the alarm are separate attributes. A 2025 Sold Secure catalogue qualification states that an alarm component is not part of Sold Secure approval; verify the qualification on the applicable product listing before relying on it. Do not describe an alarm as evidence of a higher mechanical grade. If an insurer specifies a grade, confirm that the alarmed version, not merely a visually similar non-alarmed model, is the approved item.

Oxford Boss Alarm 16mm Lock + Chain 12mm
Oxford’s product page for the Boss Alarm 16mm Lock + Chain 12mm reports Sold Secure Powered Cycle (Motorcycle) Gold, SBSC and ART 4-star recognition, and a key-replacement service. Secured by Design also lists the Oxford Boss Alarm lock-and-chain with Powered Cycle Gold status. See the Oxford specification and the Secured by Design listing before purchase.
This is a documented example of a chain combination, not a universal winner. Confirm that the model number, chain length, lock dimensions and current certification match the item being sold. The alarm should not be presented as part of the Sold Secure mechanical test. Oxford says insurance discounts are available in the UK when using this product, but any discount and required conditions depend on the individual insurer. Ask whether the insurer accepts the Powered Cycle (Motorcycle) Gold designation and whether it also requires an approved anchor or a particular installation method.
ABUS 405 disc brake lock
The manufacturer describes the ABUS 405 as suitable for light motorcycles and scooters and as basic protection for low theft risk. That makes it a useful fit-and-risk example: a compact disc lock can be appropriate for a light machine in a lower-risk setting, but the description should not be extended to larger motorcycles or higher-risk overnight parking without checking compatibility and requirements. Confirm the current dimensions and model variant before ordering, particularly when a retailer uses a shortened product name.
Editorial comparison guides
The 2026 RevZilla motorcycle-lock guide groups products into disc locks and chain locks and discusses construction, alarm features and chain-link thickness. Use such editorial comparisons to understand features and trade-offs, not as a replacement for a current certification record or a laboratory guarantee. A review can explain handling and storage, but only the applicable approval listing establishes the stated independent grade.

Build a security setup for common parking scenarios
Commuting with no fixed anchor
- Choose a disc lock whose pin and body fit your brake disc.
- Carry it in a secure case or manufacturer-approved storage location so it cannot become a projectile or damage the motorcycle.
- Use the lock whenever you leave the motorcycle, even for a short stop.
- Park in a visible, well-used location and use the steering lock as an additional layer, not as the only protection.
- At the end of the day, inspect the lock for dirt or moisture and confirm it has fully closed before storing the key.
Overnight at home or work
- Install or select a suitable fixed anchor where structural fixing is permitted.
- Choose a chain long enough to connect the anchor to the motorcycle’s frame while keeping the chain supported and clear of the ground.
- Check the exact lock-and-chain grade in the current Sold Secure database.
- Add a disc lock if carrying one is practical; independent layers force a thief to defeat more than one mechanism.
- Keep keys controlled and record the model and key information needed for replacement.
- Photograph the installed arrangement and retain receipts, approval details and key-replacement information in a secure place for insurance records.
Higher-risk or high-value motorcycle
Prioritise a chain-and-anchor arrangement with a grade and standard accepted by your insurer, then add a correctly fitted disc lock for mobility. A heavier setup is harder to carry, but that trade-off is usually acceptable when the motorcycle stays in one place overnight. Ask the insurer exactly where the lock must be fitted, whether a particular grade is required, and whether the anchor must also be approved. Consider using the chain at home even if you use only a disc lock during daytime stops.
Travel, events and temporary accommodation
When you cannot install an anchor, carry the strongest practical disc lock and choose parking where the motorcycle remains visible. If a hotel, workplace or event supplies a rail or anchor point, verify that it is genuinely fixed and that your chain can pass through the frame. Do not assume a decorative railing, thin signpost or removable barrier provides meaningful attachment.
Insurance, geography and availability checks
Certification and insurance rules are jurisdiction-specific. Oxford’s statement about possible insurance discounts applies to UK use and does not establish a discount elsewhere. Ask your own insurer for the accepted standard, minimum grade, installation conditions and whether evidence such as photographs, receipts or an approved-anchor certificate is required. Get the answer in writing when a policy condition is important to coverage.
Availability can change by country and retailer. Before ordering, confirm that the listing is the exact model named in the certification record, that dimensions match your motorcycle and anchor, and that replacement keys or batteries are obtainable in your region. A product page, marketplace listing and certification database can show different names; resolve the model-number difference rather than assuming they describe the same lock. Check return terms in case a disc pin or chain length does not fit, and do not modify a lock or chain in a way that could invalidate certification or warranty.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by a proprietary security number alone: look for the exact independent standard and grade, then verify the model in Sold Secure’s database.
- Using a disc lock as the only overnight measure: add a chain connected to a suitable anchor when the motorcycle can be attached securely.
- Buying a chain that is too short: measure the real path around the frame and anchor before ordering.
- Leaving the chain on the ground: reposition it so it is supported and does not provide a convenient surface for attack.
- Assuming an alarm equals certification: treat the alarm as a warning feature and evaluate the mechanical grade separately.
- Ignoring fit: test the disc-pin clearance or chain-and-anchor geometry before relying on the lock.
- Assuming a certification never changes: check the current listing and approval date, especially when buying old stock or a renamed model.
- Expecting a grade to guarantee recovery or prevention: certification measures performance against a defined test; it cannot promise that no theft will occur.
- Leaving keys accessible: store spare keys securely and do not hide one on the motorcycle.
- Forgetting maintenance: follow the maker’s instructions for cleaning, lubrication and battery replacement; a seized keyway can make a good lock unusable.
- Relying on a retailer title: compare the stamped model number and dimensions with the manufacturer and approval database.
A purchase checklist
- Where will the motorcycle be parked, and for how long?
- Is a properly installed fixed anchor available?
- Does the disc lock physically fit the brake disc, or does the chain fit the frame and anchor route?
- What is the exact model number and current Sold Secure standard and grade?
- Is the weight practical to carry, or is the lock intended for fixed storage?
- Do you need an alarm, and have you checked its batteries, sensitivity and local noise rules?
- What does your insurer require in your country and for this motorcycle?
- Can you obtain replacement keys, batteries and support where you live?
- Can you keep the chain supported and the lock body protected from direct ground attack?
- Will the purchase listing, certification record and supplied instructions all identify the same model?
For many riders, the sensible arrangement is a portable, correctly fitted disc lock for everyday stops and a graded chain attached to a suitable anchor for overnight storage. Select the exact components and grade for your motorcycle, parking place and insurer rather than treating any single model as universally best.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to protect a new motorcycle from theft?
Match the lock to the parking situation. Use a correctly fitted disc lock for mobile, short-term parking, and use a graded chain-and-lock combination attached to a suitable fixed anchor for overnight or repeat parking. Add layers where practical, and confirm the exact model and grade with your insurer.
Is a disc lock enough for overnight parking?
A disc lock immobilizes a wheel but does not attach the motorcycle to a fixed object. For overnight parking where a thief could lift or roll the bike away, a chain through the frame and a suitable anchor provides a more appropriate attachment layer.
Does an alarm make a motorcycle lock more secure?
An alarm adds an audible warning and may draw attention to tampering, but it is separate from the mechanical resistance tested for a Sold Secure grade. Check batteries, sensitivity, weather resistance and local noise rules, and evaluate the underlying lock independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat does Sold Secure Gold mean for a motorcycle lock?
Sold Secure describes Gold as testing against a dedicated tool list. The applicable specification depends on the product category, so verify the exact motorcycle model in Sold Secure’s current approved-product database. Gold is not a guarantee that theft is impossible.
How do I know whether a disc lock will fit my motorcycle?
Measure the brake-disc hole and confirm the pin diameter, insertion depth and body clearance against the manufacturer’s compatibility information. The pin must pass through safely without contacting the caliper, spokes or other moving parts.
How long should a motorcycle chain be?
Measure the complete route from the fixed anchor to an approved frame attachment point, including enough room to operate the lock. Avoid excessive slack and keep the chain supported rather than resting on the ground.
Can I claim an insurance discount for using a motorcycle lock?
Possibly, but requirements vary by insurer and country. Oxford mentions possible UK discounts for its Boss Alarm combination; ask your insurer about the accepted standard, minimum grade, anchor requirements and evidence needed before relying on a discount or policy condition.

The Bottom Line
Choose by parking risk and physical fit first: a portable disc lock suits daily stops, while a graded chain connected to a properly installed anchor is the stronger practical choice for overnight storage. Verify the exact model, current independent approval, alarm qualifications and insurer rules before purchase.
