There is no single best IoT platform in 2026. The right choice depends on who operates the backend, which boards and protocols you use, how much automation and data processing you need, how devices and customers are organized, and what your usage and retention costs become at scale.

For a managed, low-code product workflow, start with Blynk. For direct MQTT/HTTP dashboards and control, evaluate Virtuino Cloud. For deep rules, deployment control, or a self-managed option, evaluate ThingsBoard. For an Arduino-centered build-and-deploy loop, Arduino Cloud is the natural first stop. The comparison below explains the trade-offs, current published prices where available, and a practical way to validate your choice before committing hardware or production data.

What an IoT platform actually includes

An IoT platform is more than a web dashboard. A useful platform connects devices, accepts telemetry, stores and displays data, sends commands back to equipment, runs rules or automations, and gives people a way to administer devices and users. Some platforms also handle provisioning, firmware deployment, tenant separation, and the cloud infrastructure itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate these functions before comparing plans:

  • Ingestion: how firmware sends telemetry and receives commands, including supported protocols and connection patterns.
  • Device lifecycle: registration, credentials, configuration, status, and removal of devices.
  • Application layer: dashboards, mobile interfaces, controls, alerts, and customer-facing views.
  • Processing: rules, scripts, schedules, transformations, and event handling.
  • Operations: hosting, upgrades, backups, observability, security, support, and data-region requirements.
  • Commercial limits: device or entity counts, messages or requests, variables, history retention, users, subaccounts, and overage behavior.

A platform that is inexpensive for ten prototypes can be unsuitable for a fleet with long retention, multiple customers, and continuous telemetry. Evaluate the complete operating model rather than the entry price alone.

Platform comparison at a glance

Platform What it is strongest at Main trade-off Best initial fit
Blynk Low-code mobile and web workflows, provisioning, device and user management, and vendor-managed infrastructure Plan quotas and the amount of backend control you need must be checked against the deployment A team shipping a customer-facing connected product without operating the IoT backend
Virtuino Cloud MQTT and HTTP connectivity, real-time monitoring and control, dashboards, rules, scripts, schedules, and an HTTP-to-MQTT gateway Variable, history, automation, and request limits differ by subscription Makers and integrators who want a direct cloud dashboard and control workflow
ThingsBoard Device management, telemetry processing, rules, dashboards, protocols, and both self-managed and hosted deployment paths Community Edition requires you to run infrastructure; Cloud plans impose quotas and recurring cost Teams that need deployment or data control and substantial processing flexibility
Arduino Cloud Online device configuration, coding, connectivity, deployment, and monitoring in an Arduino-oriented workflow Confirm exact board support and which workflow features require a paid plan; a current price schedule is not established here Projects already built around Arduino tools and supported ESP32 or ESP8266 workflows

Blynk: managed infrastructure and product workflows

Blynk is designed for teams that want a managed service spanning the device connection, cloud, console, application experience, and provisioning. Its documentation describes low-code mobile and web app workflows along with device and user management. That combination is useful when the same organization must deliver an app to customers and administer the connected devices behind it.

Read the Blynk documentation for the current architecture and supported workflow, then check the Blynk pricing page for the plan you would actually use. The pricing page currently lists a Free tier at $0 and paid tiers including Starter shown at $29 per month. Treat those figures as current page listings, not permanent prices. The page also describes plan-dependent device counts, retention, message allowances, and features; do not assume that a capability shown in the product documentation is included in every tier.

When Blynk is a good fit

  • You want the vendor to operate the core cloud rather than maintain your own brokers, databases, and dashboard servers.
  • Your product needs a polished mobile or web control surface as well as device connectivity.
  • Provisioning and user administration are important parts of the launch, not tasks you want to build from scratch.
  • Your expected device, message, and history volumes fit comfortably inside a selected plan.

Questions to resolve before committing

  • How many active devices, end users, and administrators will the plan permit?
  • What message allowance and history retention apply to your telemetry pattern?
  • Which backend integrations or data-export paths are available at the tier you can afford?
  • What happens when a quota is reached: throttling, blocked writes, overage billing, or an upgrade?

Virtuino Cloud: direct MQTT and HTTP dashboards

Virtuino Cloud focuses on connecting data through MQTT and HTTP and presenting it in dashboards for monitoring and control. Its documented feature set includes real-time views, rules, scripts, schedules, and an HTTP-to-MQTT gateway. That makes it attractive when you already understand the data your controller exposes and want to assemble a control interface without building a complete cloud application.

Do not confuse Virtuino Cloud with Virtuino IoT. Virtuino Cloud is the cloud platform; Virtuino IoT is a cross-platform HMI application with its own subscription model. Decide whether you need the hosted data and automation service, the HMI client, or both, and budget them separately.

Published subscription levels

The current Virtuino subscription page lists Hobby at €0 per month, Essential at €7, Advanced at €19, and Ultimate at €49. It also lists a custom dedicated-server plan. The tiers differ in field or variable counts, history retention, dashboards, scripts, schedules, subaccounts, and request limits. Because the page is a live commercial schedule, verify the limits and currency immediately before purchase.

Virtuino Cloud tier Published monthly price What to verify
Hobby €0 Included variable or field count, history, dashboards, automation, and request ceiling
Essential €7 Retention period, script and schedule access, and subaccount limits
Advanced €19 Higher data and dashboard allowances and the applicable request limit
Ultimate €49 Maximum published allowances and whether they match your fleet forecast
Dedicated server Custom Hosting terms, isolation, support, and total recurring cost

When Virtuino is a good fit

  • Your equipment already speaks MQTT or HTTP and you need a practical visualization and control layer.
  • Schedules, scripts, and gateway behavior are more important than a large custom application backend.
  • You can model the project in variables, fields, dashboards, and requests and keep those counts within a tier.

For a multi-tenant commercial product, test subaccounts, permissions, history retrieval, and request behavior with realistic traffic rather than relying on a small demonstration.

ThingsBoard: processing depth and deployment choice

ThingsBoard covers device management, telemetry, dashboards, protocols, and rule or processing workflows. Its defining choice is deployment: you can run the free, open-source Community Edition yourself or use ThingsBoard Cloud as a managed service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Community Edition

The Community Edition and pricing details describe the self-managed route. “Free” means no platform license fee, not zero operating cost. Your team must provision servers, secure network access, maintain databases and upgrades, monitor availability, back up data, and plan capacity. That effort can be worthwhile when you require control over deployment, data location, or custom infrastructure, but it becomes part of the total cost and operational risk.

ThingsBoard Cloud

Managed Cloud removes most infrastructure work but uses subscription quotas. The US subscription page says its listed plans were introduced on January 20, 2026. It lists Free at $0 per month, Prototype at $49, Pilot at $149, Startup at $399, and Business at $749. Each plan has different device or entity and usage quotas, so the price alone does not tell you how many devices or messages it supports.

ThingsBoard Cloud US plan Published monthly price Important qualification
Free $0 Quota-limited; check current device, entity, data, and support allowances
Prototype $49 US plan listing introduced January 20, 2026; verify all usage ceilings
Pilot $149 US pricing; quota and support terms vary by plan
Startup $399 US pricing; model production traffic before selecting
Business $749 US pricing; confirm included capacity and contractual terms

Use the US plan reference for current quotas. A separate EU subscription page uses EUR prices, so state region and currency when comparing a quote. Cloud is the simpler operational choice; Community Edition is the control-oriented choice. Neither is automatically cheaper until hosting, engineering time, support, and required retention are included.

Arduino Cloud: an Arduino-centered development loop

Arduino Cloud documentation brings device configuration, online coding, connectivity, deployment, and monitoring into one Arduino-oriented workflow. It is a natural starting point when your team already uses Arduino tooling and wants the cloud to remain close to that development process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current guides also cover ESP32 and ESP8266 workflows. That does not mean every board, radio combination, library, or cloud function is interchangeable. Before buying hardware, verify the exact board model, supported connectivity, required agent or integration, and whether the features you need are available on the plan and firmware path you intend to use.

Why choose it

  • The developers who write and deploy firmware are already comfortable with Arduino tools.
  • You want configuration and monitoring in the same workflow rather than assembling several unrelated services.
  • Your prototype or product uses a documented Arduino, ESP32, or ESP8266 path.

What remains to verify

  • Current plan limits and pricing for the number of devices and collaborators.
  • Whether your selected board and network hardware support the required cloud features.
  • How long telemetry is retained and how you export it for independent analysis or compliance.
  • What OTA, provisioning, and production support look like for your exact board family.

A reliable Arduino prototype can still require a separate production architecture. Treat the cloud workflow as a strong development advantage, then validate fleet operations, security, and data lifecycle before scaling.

Choose by deployment responsibility first

The first decision is who will be on call when the platform is unavailable or misconfigured.

Choose managed infrastructure when

  • You have a small operations team and would rather pay a recurring service fee than maintain brokers, databases, dashboards, and upgrades.
  • Fast delivery of a customer-facing app and provisioning flow matters more than deep control of the backend.
  • Your data-region, retention, and quota requirements fit the provider’s published or contracted limits.

Blynk is the clearest managed-product candidate in this set. Virtuino Cloud and ThingsBoard Cloud are also managed options, with different dashboard, automation, and quota models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose self-managed infrastructure when

  • Data residency, network isolation, custom processing, or integration with existing systems is a hard requirement.
  • You have people who can operate databases, security updates, backups, monitoring, and disaster recovery.
  • You need control over deployment behavior that a hosted plan does not expose.

ThingsBoard Community Edition provides the explicit self-managed path. Calculate staffing and hosting before treating its license cost as the project cost.

Match the platform to hardware and protocols

List every board, radio, gateway, and protocol in the design before comparing dashboards. A platform may support a hardware family while a particular board lacks the memory, power, radio, or library support needed by your application.

  1. Write down the exact board or module, wireless technology, power source, and firmware environment.
  2. Identify whether telemetry and commands use MQTT, HTTP, a gateway, or another documented path.
  3. Check the platform’s current guide for that exact board and required libraries or agents.
  4. Measure payload size, reporting interval, reconnect behavior, and offline buffering.
  5. Test provisioning, credential rotation, and recovery after a network outage.

An ESP32 development board is a defensible category for building and testing a compatible prototype: Arduino Cloud documents ESP32 and ESP8266 workflows, and Blynk materials list ESP32 among supported MCU families. This supports the category, not a particular model. Check exact support, radio needs, power requirements, and whether existing hardware can complete the project before purchasing anything.

Compare dashboards, control, and automation

Ask what an operator must do at 2 a.m., not only what the demo screen looks like.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Visualization: Which charts, status indicators, maps, and historical views are available, and how many dashboards or variables are included?
  • Commands: Can an authorized user change a set point, trigger an action, or acknowledge an alert safely?
  • Automation: Are rules, scripts, schedules, transformations, and gateways available at the chosen tier?
  • Mobile use: Do field users need a native or cross-platform HMI, a responsive web view, or both?
  • Failure behavior: What happens when a device is offline, a request limit is reached, or a rule fails?

Virtuino Cloud explicitly combines MQTT and HTTP data with dashboards, rules, scripts, schedules, and an HTTP-to-MQTT gateway. Blynk emphasizes low-code app and console workflows. ThingsBoard emphasizes dashboards alongside telemetry processing and rules. Arduino Cloud keeps monitoring close to its device and deployment workflow. Select based on the operator’s actual tasks and the automation depth they require.

Fleet, tenant, and security requirements

A single maker dashboard and a commercial fleet have different administrative needs. Document the following before selecting a plan:

  • Number of devices now, at launch, and at the end of the forecast period.
  • Whether each customer needs an isolated tenant, subaccount, or dashboard.
  • Roles for installers, operators, support staff, and read-only viewers.
  • Credential provisioning, rotation, revocation, and device replacement procedures.
  • Required data region, encryption expectations, audit information, and export process.
  • Support response expectations and the escalation path for an outage.

Blynk’s documented device and user management and provisioning are relevant to customer-facing products. Virtuino’s tiers include different subaccount capabilities, which must be checked against the intended organization. ThingsBoard’s deployment control can help with residency or network requirements but increases your operating responsibility when self-hosted. Arduino Cloud users should verify how the selected workflow handles production fleet administration beyond development.

Calculate the real cost

Build a one-year model using your own traffic rather than comparing headline prices. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Platform subscription or license.
  • Number of devices, entities, users, tenants, variables, and dashboards.
  • Telemetry frequency, payload size, command traffic, and request or message quotas.
  • History retention and the storage or export needed for longer analysis.
  • Hosting, database, backups, monitoring, bandwidth, and support for self-managed deployments.
  • Engineering time for firmware integration, provisioning, dashboard work, migrations, and incident response.
  • Hardware replacement, connectivity, and OTA update operations.

For example, a €0 Virtuino Hobby account or a $0 Blynk or ThingsBoard Cloud tier can still be unsuitable if its limits force an upgrade, data export, or custom service. Conversely, a paid managed plan may cost less than a “free” self-hosted deployment once staff time and availability requirements are counted.

A practical proof-of-concept plan

Run the same small but realistic test on every finalist. A weekend demo is not enough; include the behaviors that create cost and operational risk.

  1. Define acceptance criteria. Specify connection time, telemetry interval, command latency target, retention period, number of users, and outage behavior.
  2. Use representative hardware. Test the exact board, radio, power arrangement, and firmware libraries planned for deployment.
  3. Send realistic traffic. Include normal telemetry, bursts, reconnects, duplicate messages, malformed payloads, and offline buffering.
  4. Build one operator workflow. Display a metric, issue a command, confirm the result, and record what happens when the device is unreachable.
  5. Exercise administration. Provision a new device, rotate credentials, create the intended user or tenant, revoke access, and replace a device.
  6. Check history and export. Retrieve data at the required retention horizon and verify that timestamps, units, and identifiers remain usable.
  7. Measure effort. Record engineering hours, cloud configuration, documentation quality, and the steps needed to recover from failure.
  8. Stress quotas. Estimate when devices, messages, requests, variables, or storage would cross the selected tier and document the upgrade path.

Keep the results as an internal decision record. The goal is not a benchmark score; it is evidence that the platform can perform the exact workflow your product requires.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Choosing from the dashboard screenshot

Problem: A visually attractive dashboard hides limits on ingestion, retention, users, or automation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Model traffic and administration first, then build the dashboard needed by the operator.

Treating self-hosted as free

Problem: License cost is compared while servers, backups, upgrades, monitoring, and on-call work are ignored.

Fix: Add infrastructure and labor to the same one-year worksheet used for hosted plans.

Assuming every board works the same way

Problem: A platform guide for one ESP32 or Arduino workflow is treated as proof for every board and feature.
