For an unlocked, compatible phone and a data-first trip, compare a destination eSIM or local SIM first. Choose your home carrier’s roaming plan when it includes your destination or keeping your usual number available is more important than finding a separate plan. For a group or several devices, a portable Wi-Fi hotspot can share one connection. These choices can also work together: for example, keep your home line for calls and texts while using a travel eSIM for data.
The right choice depends on your destination and route, phone compatibility, trip length, data needs, and plan terms. Check those details before you buy; international coverage, costs, and features vary by carrier and destination.
Which travel internet option fits your trip?
| Option | Best fit | Check before choosing | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming or travel pass | Convenience, access to your home line, or a plan that already covers your destination | Included countries, daily or monthly charges, data caps or throttling, calls and texts, and automatic activation | Coverage and price depend on your carrier, plan, and destination; service may not be included. |
| Local SIM | Longer stays or trips where a local number is useful | Unlocked phone, SIM size and supported bands, local registration or ID rules, activation, and bundle details | Replacing a physical SIM can displace your home SIM, and buying or registering one may take time. |
| Prepaid travel eSIM | Data-first use on an unlocked phone that supports eSIM | Device eligibility, destination coverage, data allowance, validity, activation timing, hotspot permission, and voice or SMS inclusion | Many offers are data-only, and plans differ by provider and destination. |
| Hotel or public Wi-Fi | Messaging, downloads, and reducing cellular data use | Whether a network is available when needed and whether you trust it | Availability varies, and public networks may be insecure. |
| Portable Wi-Fi hotspot (pocket Wi-Fi or MiFi) | Families, groups, or travelers connecting several devices | Device compatibility, service plan, coverage, battery life, and hotspot data allowance | The hotspot needs its own connection plan and adds a device to carry and charge. |
| Airplane or cruise connectivity | A particular flight or ship segment | Whether service is offered, its price, and which apps or services work | It is a separate connection option, and service may be limited. |
For a short trip, the home carrier may be easiest if its terms suit your route. For a longer stay, compare local service with travel eSIM offers. If more than one person or device needs to connect, include the cost and practicalities of a hotspot in the comparison. Do not assume one option is cheapest or has the best coverage without checking the specific plans.
What to check before buying a travel eSIM or local SIM
Confirm the phone is compatible and unlocked
A travel eSIM requires a compatible device, and using another carrier’s eSIM may also require an unlocked phone. On iPhone, Apple says to check Settings > General > About; an unlocked device displays “No SIM Restrictions.” This iPhone-specific check does not establish compatibility for other phone models, so check your manufacturer and carrier’s guidance too. Apple’s international eSIM guidance explains device and plan considerations.

For a physical local SIM, confirm the phone accepts the SIM size and supports the destination carrier’s network bands. Local rules may require identification or registration, and requirements vary by country.
Match the plan to your itinerary and use
Check every destination on your route, including stopovers, rather than relying on a broad “international” label. Compare the data allowance and validity period with your expected use, and confirm whether calls, texts, and tethering are included. Check whether activation starts at purchase, installation, or first connection; the timing is plan-specific.

Keep your home line from generating surprise charges
A travel eSIM carrying data does not necessarily prevent roaming charges on your home line. Apple warns that if both lines remain enabled, the home eSIM may still incur roaming fees. Review your carrier’s roaming terms and line settings before departure. If you need your home number for calls or texts, confirm how those services are charged while traveling.
When roaming is the more convenient choice
Roaming can make sense if your existing plan includes the destination, the pass terms fit your trip, or you want to keep your home line readily available. Before leaving, verify the exact countries covered, price and billing period, data limits, speed reductions, call and text rules, and whether enrollment or activation is automatic. A plan’s general international label is not a substitute for checking the specific destination.

When a portable hotspot makes sense
A portable hotspot—also called pocket Wi-Fi or MiFi—creates a Wi-Fi connection that multiple devices can use. It can suit a group or someone who needs to connect a phone, tablet, and laptop at the same time. Government of Canada travel guidance describes a MiFi as serving up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices; that is not a universal limit for every model.

- Check the route and terms. Confirm coverage, cost, data, validity, activation, calls and texts, and hotspot rules for each destination with the relevant provider.
- Set up your phone before you leave. Confirm SIM or eSIM compatibility and unlock status. If you will use two lines, review which line handles data and what your home line may charge.
- Save essentials offline. Download maps and important travel information, and save emergency contacts and local emergency numbers. The U.S. Department of State recommends updating devices and apps before travel.
- Use Wi-Fi deliberately. Wi-Fi in hotels, cafes, and public spaces can help reduce cellular data use, but the Department of State cautions that public Wi-Fi may not be secure. Some calling and messaging apps work over Wi-Fi without a data plan; do not treat an unfamiliar network as inherently safe.
- Plan for flights and cruises. Check whether connectivity is offered for your specific flight or ship and what it supports. Government of Canada guidance notes that services on planes and cruise ships may be limited.
Canada’s guidance notes that a device may connect to Wi-Fi while in airplane mode if Wi-Fi is turned on manually. Device behavior and available services can vary, so confirm the relevant settings and provider instructions before relying on this option.

AT&T eSIM by AT&T
