The KODAK PIXPRO FZ55 is a sensible new digital camera to consider under $250 in the United States: Kodak lists a $159.99 US manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP), and the compact camera has a 5x optical zoom, 16MP sensor, 28mm wide-angle lens, and 1080p video. MSRP is a reference, not a promise of today’s selling price, so check the current total before buying.
Why the KODAK PIXPRO FZ55 is the leading pick
The FZ55’s main advantage at this budget is real optical zoom in a small point-and-shoot body. Its 5x zoom gives you more framing flexibility than a fixed-focus camera, while the 28mm wide-angle lens is useful for group photos and broad scenes. Kodak lists a 16MP sensor and 1080p video as well. These specifications describe capability; they do not guarantee a particular level of image quality.
Kodak’s official FZ55 product page lists a US MSRP of $159.99. NBC Select’s 2026 guide showed prices of $139.99 at Amazon, $149.99 at Best Buy, and $139.99 at B&H when that guide was retrieved. Those are a dated retailer snapshot, not guaranteed current prices or availability. Check the live price and whether a memory card is included before deciding.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallKodak calls it a “generous 5x optical zoom in a slim and compact design.” That is manufacturer copy, not an independent assessment. Independent coverage is more qualified: NBC Select and Digital Camera World describe image quality as adequate rather than exceptional and note limitations in low light. A small-sensor budget compact should not be assumed to outperform a modern phone in every scene.

Compare the FZ55 with the cheaper alternatives
The FZ45 and C1 are lower-cost choices in Kodak’s Friendly Zoom lineup, but they are not direct substitutes for the FZ55’s optical zoom. Kodak’s listed specifications and US MSRPs are summarized below.
| Camera | US MSRP | Lens and zoom | Sensor and video | Power | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KODAK PIXPRO FZ55 | $159.99, manufacturer list price | 5x optical zoom; 28mm wide-angle | 16MP; 1080p video | Rechargeable lithium-ion battery | Choose when optical zoom is important in a compact camera. |
| KODAK PIXPRO FZ45 | $129.99, manufacturer list price | 4x optical zoom | 16MP; 1080p video | Two AA batteries | A lower-MSRP option if AA power is more convenient and 4x zoom is enough. |
| KODAK PIXPRO C1 | $119.99, manufacturer list price | Fixed-focus 26mm lens; no optical zoom specified | 13MP; 1080p video | Rechargeable lithium-ion battery | A simpler choice if you do not need zoom and prefer a fixed-focus camera. |
These are Kodak US manufacturer list prices and specifications from its Friendly Zoom lineup, retrieved October 7, 2026. They are not live retailer quotes. The FZ45’s AA batteries may be easier to replace while traveling, though recurring battery purchases can add cost; the FZ55 and C1 use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

What to check before buying
- Live total cost: Compare the current camera price and any required memory card, rather than relying on MSRP or an older retailer listing.
- Zoom and field of view: The FZ55 offers 5x optical zoom from a 28mm wide-angle lens; the FZ45 has 4x optical zoom. The C1’s 26mm lens is fixed-focus, not a zoom lens.
- Power: The FZ45 uses two AA batteries. The FZ55 and C1 use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Choose based on whether rechargeable power or readily replaceable AAs suit your trips better.
- Image expectations: For daylight snapshots and a dedicated compact-camera experience, the FZ55’s feature set is useful. For frequent night scenes or demanding image quality, reviews warn that its small sensor and low-light performance are limiting; a sub-$250 compact may not deliver a premium result.
Review observations are not laboratory comparisons. Digital Camera World’s hands-on reviewer reported frustrations with LCD color and exposure metering, but also said results were satisfying when the camera got them right. Treat that as one reviewer’s experience, not proof every unit has a defect.

The FZ55 supports SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards up to 512GB; Kodak says to use a Class 10 or faster card. Its specification sheet says MMC is unsupported and lists about 63MB of internal memory, which is too little to treat as a substitute for removable storage. Check the card specification and camera package contents before purchase.

How to make the final choice
- Start with the feature you need. Pick the FZ55 for 5x optical zoom and its 28mm wide-angle view; consider the FZ45 if AA batteries and a lower MSRP matter more; choose the C1 only if a fixed-focus lens is sufficient.
- Check the current US price and included items. Compare live listings, verify the camera is in stock, and account for a compatible SD-family card if one is not included.
- Match the camera to the scenes you shoot. These are entry-level compact cameras. If low-light image quality is a priority, read reviewer assessments closely and consider whether the compromises of a small-sensor camera fit your needs.
