The most reliable way to choose a technology ETF with less AI exposure is to define what you want to exclude, then verify the fund’s mandate, index rules and dated holdings. No broad technology label guarantees an AI-free portfolio: semiconductor, cloud, data-center, software, hardware, communications and consumer companies can all benefit from or spend on AI. Treat “outside AI” as a measurable portfolio rule rather than a marketing label.

Before investing, read the current prospectus and latest shareholder report. As the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov puts it: “Before investing in an ETF, you should carefully read the fund’s available information, including its prospectus and most recent shareholder report.”

Decide what “outside AI” means for your portfolio

There is no universal non-AI classification. Two investors can examine the same fund and reach different conclusions because one excludes only funds marketed around artificial intelligence while the other also wants to reduce indirect exposure to chipmakers, cloud infrastructure, data centers and software vendors whose revenues are tied to AI investment.

Write the exclusion rule before opening a screener. A written rule prevents you from selecting a fund first and then rationalizing its holdings afterward.

Three practical exclusion levels

Exclusion level What it removes What can remain Best use
Marketing-level exclusion Funds whose stated theme is AI, machine learning or robotics centered on AI. Traditional technology companies that sell chips, cloud capacity, software or hardware used by AI customers. When you want a conventional technology allocation rather than an AI-themed product.
Beneficiary reduction Large or concentrated positions in businesses most dependent on AI infrastructure spending. Some indirect AI revenue throughout the portfolio. When you want technology exposure but less sensitivity to an AI-capital-spending cycle.
Strict business-rule exclusion Companies that meet a defined revenue, keyword or business-activity test connected to AI. Only businesses that pass the fund’s stated test; classification gaps are still possible. When an investment policy requires a documented screen.

A conventional sector ETF normally satisfies the first level only. A strict second- or third-level result requires a methodology that explicitly defines the screen and holdings that demonstrate it is being applied. If a prospectus does not define AI, you cannot honestly call the fund “AI-free.”

Start with the fund’s mandate and methodology

The fund name and sector label are an introduction, not an investment rule. Read the prospectus, index methodology or active-strategy description that controls what the portfolio may own.

Identify the eligible universe

Check whether the fund starts with a national index, a global universe, a sector classification or a manager-selected list. A U.S. large-cap sector fund can omit foreign technology companies and can include companies that an investor regards as technology-adjacent. Classification systems may place communications businesses or consumer-discretionary businesses outside an information-technology sector even when their products rely heavily on software or digital infrastructure.

Check how companies are classified

Look for the classification provider and the rule used to assign an industry. Determine whether classification follows a company’s primary business, revenue mix, market description or another test. A company can move sectors after a corporate restructuring or a classification review without the fund changing its stated objective.

Read the weighting method

Market-cap weighting gives the largest eligible companies the greatest influence. Equal weighting limits the effect of any one company but can increase turnover and exposure to smaller firms. Capped, tiered or modified market-cap methods can still leave a handful of companies dominating returns. The methodology should state the cap, the rebalance dates and what happens when a company breaches a limit.

Find the screening language

Search the methodology for revenue thresholds, keyword screens, controversy exclusions, business-activity definitions and exceptions. “Technology” is not an AI screen. If the rules contain no AI-related definition, the only defensible conclusion is that AI exposure must be assessed from the holdings, not assumed absent.

Understand rebalancing and turnover

Record how often the index reconstitutes and how the manager can trade between scheduled reviews. Quarterly, semiannual and annual reviews can produce different lag times when a company’s business changes. Active funds may trade whenever the manager’s view changes. A dated portfolio can become stale after a rebalance, merger or index reclassification.

Inspect the actual portfolio, not just the label

After reading the mandate, download the latest holdings file and note its “as of” date. Record every position that could create the exposure you are trying to avoid, then repeat the exercise after each rebalance.

Measure concentration first

Record the number of holdings, the weight of the largest position and the combined weight of the top 10. A fund with dozens of holdings may still behave like a concentrated bet if a few companies dominate its weighting. Concentration also determines how much an unexpected earnings result, regulation or capital-spending slowdown can move the ETF.

Separate direct and indirect exposure

Direct exposure can include a company whose stated business is AI software or whose index rules specifically identify AI activities. Indirect exposure is broader: semiconductor manufacturing and equipment, cloud computing, data-center hardware, networking, enterprise software and other suppliers may gain revenue from AI demand without describing themselves as AI companies. Decide in advance whether those businesses are acceptable and apply the same rule consistently.

Review industries and geography

Use the industry breakdown to see whether the fund is really diversified across software, hardware, semiconductors, IT services and other groups, or whether one group dominates. Check country and currency exposure as well. A U.S.-only fund may have different regulatory and business risks from a global fund, while a global fund can add currency movements and foreign-market risks.

Use a dated holdings worksheet

Field What to record Why it matters
Holdings date The portfolio’s stated “as of” date. Shows how current your exclusion test is.
Number of holdings Total positions, including any cash or derivatives treatment disclosed. Indicates breadth but does not by itself prove diversification.
Top-10 weight Combined percentage and each leading position. Reveals concentration and dependence on a few companies.
Industry mix Weights by the fund’s classification system. Shows whether chips, cloud, software or another group drives results.
Geographic mix Country or regional weights and currency exposure. Identifies market, regulatory and currency differences.
Potential AI links Positions that violate your direct or indirect rule, with your reason. Turns a subjective concern into a repeatable decision.

Do not turn a single clean snapshot into a permanent claim. Holdings change, and an index can add a company after a review. Keep the date with every worksheet and state the limits of what that snapshot proves.

Compare fund structure and the full cost of ownership

An ETF’s expense ratio is only one cost. Compare funds with the same mandate and account for the price you pay to trade, the difference between market price and net asset value (NAV), and how closely the portfolio follows its objective.

Comparison item Questions to ask
Expense ratio What annual operating expense is disclosed, and are fee waivers temporary? Compare like-for-like funds rather than using a broad market fund as the benchmark.
Bid-ask spread What is the median spread under normal trading conditions? A low expense ratio can be overwhelmed by a wide spread when you buy or sell.
Trading volume and liquidity How readily can you place an order without moving the market? Volume varies by time of day and market conditions, so do not treat one day’s volume as a guarantee.
NAV premium or discount How far has the market price historically moved above or below NAV? Investor.gov explains that ETF shares trade at market prices that can differ from NAV.
Tracking difference How closely has the ETF followed its index after expenses and implementation costs? A low tracking difference supports a rules-based objective; a persistent gap needs an explanation.
Portfolio turnover How often does the index or manager trade? Higher turnover can increase transaction costs and taxable distributions.
Securities lending Does the fund lend shares, how is the activity disclosed and how are related risks handled?
Tax treatment What taxes apply to distributions, capital gains and cross-border holdings in your jurisdiction? The answer depends on where you live and the account you use.

Trade with price discipline

Use a limit order when the spread or liquidity is uncertain, especially near the market open, close or during a market shock. Compare the quoted market price with the published NAV and check the historical premium/discount record before assuming the trading price represents the underlying assets precisely.

Distinguish an index gap from a bad fund

A rules-based ETF can lag its index because of expenses, sampling, withholding taxes, rebalancing costs or cash management. An active fund can outperform or underperform because its manager made different security choices. Tracking difference is therefore evidence about implementation, not proof that a fund’s technology thesis is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate concentration and non-diversification risk

Sector funds are narrower than a total-market portfolio. The prospectus for a broad information-technology fund may warn that sector and non-diversification risks can produce larger performance fluctuations than the overall stock market. Treat that warning as a portfolio-construction issue, not a footnote.

Use a core-and-satellite decision

Decide whether the ETF is a satellite around a diversified core or the main equity holding. A satellite allocation can limit the damage from a technology-specific drawdown; making a sector ETF the core requires accepting that its industry, geography and concentration risks will dominate more of the portfolio.

Stress-test the exposure you actually own

  • Ask what happens if enterprise technology budgets slow.
  • Consider whether a few large positions could fall together after an earnings disappointment.
  • Check whether currency movements could offset gains in foreign holdings.
  • Review how much of your broader portfolio already owns the same companies through other funds.
  • Consider whether the fund’s AI exclusion simply shifts risk into another concentrated technology group.

These are scenario questions, not forecasts. The objective is to understand the portfolio’s sensitivity before buying it.

What three technology ETF examples teach you

The following funds illustrate different due-diligence questions. They are examples for comparison, not recommendations, and their current holdings, costs and risks must be checked in the latest documents.

Fund example Documented approach Question for an outside-AI investor
XLK, Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF An SEC filing says it seeks to track the Technology Select Sector Index, which is composed of S&P 500 constituents and calculated with a modified market-cap methodology. Does the sector universe and modified market-cap weighting leave the concentration and indirect AI exposure acceptable under your rule?
VGT, Vanguard Information Technology ETF Vanguard materials identify sector and non-diversification risks that can produce larger performance fluctuations than the overall stock market. How many holdings, what top-10 weight and what industry mix are shown in the current portfolio, and can you accept the narrower risk?
Columbia Select Technology ETF Its SEC prospectus describes active technology investing. Effective February 28, 2025, the strategy changed from a semiconductor, semiconductor-equipment and related-technology mandate to a broader technology and technology-related mandate. Are you reading the post-change prospectus and current holdings rather than relying on an older description?

The Columbia example demonstrates why an apparently familiar fund can change its investable universe. The XLK example shows that a conventional sector index is a baseline, not a promise of zero AI exposure. The VGT example highlights the need to judge sector and non-diversification risk alongside any AI screen.

Build a like-for-like comparison

Do not compare a broad sector index with a narrowly defined semiconductor fund or an active thematic fund and then attribute every difference to AI exposure. Create separate peer groups and use the same fields for each fund.

Field Broad sector funds Industry funds Thematic or active funds
Primary question How broad is the sector and how concentrated is it? How dependent is the portfolio on one industry cycle? What discretionary or thematic rule drives security selection?
Methodology Index universe, classification and weighting. Industry definition and eligibility boundaries. Manager mandate, research process and permitted holdings.
AI test Usually requires holdings review for indirect exposure. May have substantial AI-linked infrastructure exposure even without an AI label. Requires reading the stated theme and manager discretion limits.
Turnover check Scheduled rebalances and corporate actions. Industry additions, removals and caps. Manager trades, position limits and cash levels.

Use “not stated” when a document does not disclose a comparable value. Do not fill a missing expense ratio, spread, turnover figure or AI percentage with an estimate.

A step-by-step selection workflow

  1. Write your exclusion rule. State whether you are removing AI-themed funds only, reducing major AI beneficiaries or applying a documented business-activity test.
  2. Choose the peer group. Compare broad sector funds with broad sector funds, industry funds with industry funds, and active or thematic funds with similar peers.
  3. Open the current prospectus. Confirm the objective, eligible universe, classification system, weighting method, permitted derivatives, rebalancing schedule and risk disclosures.
  4. Read the index methodology or active mandate. Find revenue thresholds, keyword screens, exceptions, caps and rules for additions or removals.
  5. Download dated holdings. Record the holdings date, number of positions, top-10 concentration, industry weights, geography and any positions that conflict with your exclusion rule.
  6. Test indirect exposure. Decide how you will treat semiconductors, cloud, data-center infrastructure, networking, software and hardware suppliers, then apply that decision consistently.
  7. Compare ownership and trading costs. Record the expense ratio, median bid-ask spread, liquidity, NAV premium/discount history, tracking difference, turnover, securities lending disclosures and tax considerations.
  8. Check portfolio fit. Identify overlapping holdings in your other investments and decide whether this ETF is a satellite or a core position.
  9. Set a review trigger. Recheck after an index rebalance, strategy change, merger, major classification change or material shift in the top holdings.
  10. Document the decision. Save the prospectus version, holdings date and your pass/fail reasons so you can tell whether the fund still meets the rule later.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling a diversified technology ETF “AI-free”

Why it fails: AI-related revenue and spending can run through many technology industries, and a sector label does not define AI.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Use qualified language such as “not marketed as an AI fund” or “lower exposure under this dated holdings test,” and state the date and limits of the review.

Relying on a fund name or ticker

Why it fails: Names summarize a mandate and can remain familiar after a strategy change.

Correction: Read the current prospectus and index rules. The February 28, 2025 change described for Columbia Select Technology ETF shows why an old summary can mislead.

Looking only at the number of holdings

Why it fails: A fund can hold many securities while the largest few determine most returns.

Correction: Record individual weights and the combined top-10 percentage, then examine industry and geographic concentration.

Ignoring indirect beneficiaries

Why it fails: Chips, cloud capacity, data centers, networking and enterprise software can all be tied to AI spending without an AI label.

Correction: Define whether those businesses are excluded, tolerated or simply capped, and apply the rule to the holdings.

Comparing expense ratios alone

Why it fails: Spreads, market-price deviations from NAV, turnover and tracking difference affect the result you receive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Compare the full ownership and trading-cost set for funds with similar mandates.

Using stale holdings

Why it fails: Rebalances and corporate actions can change exposure after your snapshot.

Correction: Save the holdings date and establish a review trigger for every scheduled rebalance or material strategy change.

How to monitor a fund after purchase

Monitoring should be proportional to the rule you adopted. If you only wanted to avoid explicitly AI-themed funds, an annual prospectus and holdings review may be sufficient. A strict business-activity exclusion requires checking every rebalance and investigating new positions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the fund’s objective and methodology have not changed.
  • Refresh the holdings worksheet and compare top-10 and industry weights with the previous snapshot.
  • Check whether a classification change moved a company into or out of the eligible universe.
  • Review changes in spread, liquidity and NAV premiums or discounts if you are adding or selling.
  • Compare tracking difference with the stated index objective after major rebalances.
  • Recalculate overlap with your other accounts and funds.

If the fund no longer meets your written rule, decide whether to reduce, replace or retain it based on your overall allocation and tax position. Do not silently change the rule simply because the holdings became inconvenient.

Questions to answer before placing an order

  • What exactly am I excluding: AI themes, major beneficiaries or defined business activities?
  • Which document defines the fund’s eligible universe and weighting?
  • What was the holdings date, and when is the next rebalance?
  • How concentrated are the top positions and industries?
  • What indirect AI exposure am I willing to accept?
  • What are the expense ratio, spread, liquidity and historical premium or discount to NAV?
  • How closely has the ETF tracked its index or active objective?
  • Does its sector and non-diversification risk fit its role in my portfolio?
  • What change would make me review or sell the position?
