The right rooftop solar system is the one that fits your roof, produces useful power at your address, matches your household’s electricity demand, and works with your utility’s rate and export rules. Panel wattage alone cannot answer that. Start with roof condition and shade, estimate production for the specific site, size the system from actual bills and likely future loads, then compare complete installer proposals—including the inverter, mounting, warranties, and any battery—not just module prices.

Is your home suitable for solar panels?

Suitability is a site question, not a climate or compass-direction label. A qualified installer should assess the roof’s remaining life, usable area, slope, orientation, shade, and structural condition before recommending equipment. Gather roof-age or replacement records, recent electricity bills, and plans for changes such as a heat pump, electric water heater, or electric vehicle before requesting final proposals.

Check the roof before choosing equipment

Solar equipment can remain in service for decades. If shingles, tiles, membranes, flashing, or underlying structure are near the end of their useful life, installing an array first can create avoidable removal and reinstallation costs. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says it can often save money to coordinate solar installation with roof replacement. Have a roofer, qualified solar contractor, or structural engineer identify leaks, damage, load limitations, and repairs that must be completed first.

Roof factor What to examine Why it changes the decision
Age and condition Installation date, remaining service life, leaks, damaged coverings, flashing, and structural problems A roof replacement after solar installation may require removing and reinstalling the array.
Usable area Continuous surface after excluding skylights, vents, ridges, valleys, setbacks, and access paths Determines how many modules can physically fit and whether the target system size is realistic.
Orientation and slope Compass direction and roof pitch for each potential array area Affects the hours and season in which modules receive useful sunlight; it must be included in production modeling.
Shade Trees, chimneys, neighboring buildings, roof features, and seasonal shadows Shading can reduce output and may influence inverter and array design.
Structure and code Framing capacity, attachment locations, electrical service, fire access, and local permit requirements May require engineering, service upgrades, or a different layout before installation can proceed.

Does climate rule out rooftop solar?

No. The DOE’s Homeowner’s Guide to Solar states: “Solar panels are built to work in all climates.” Climate still affects the amount and timing of electricity a system produces, so a site-specific estimate must use local weather data and the roof’s actual characteristics. Snow, heat, rain, coastal conditions, and storms should be addressed through appropriate equipment, mounting, code compliance, and maintenance planning rather than treated as an automatic rejection.

How much do orientation and shade matter?

DOE guidance says panels typically perform best on unshaded, south-facing roofs with slopes between 15 and 40 degrees. That is a useful starting point, not a pass-or-fail rule. East-, west-, and other roof planes can still be productive, especially when they better match the household’s morning or afternoon demand or provide more unshaded area. An installer should show how each roof plane changes the modeled annual and seasonal output.

Ask specifically how shade was modeled. Remote mapping tools use information such as satellite imagery and can miss tree growth, chimney shadows, or obstructions visible from the property. Walk the roofline with the installer or request an on-site shade assessment before accepting a final production number.

How to size a system around real electricity use

Size the system from the home’s electricity consumption and the site’s estimated production, not from the largest module that fits. Review at least a full year of bills so seasonal peaks are visible. Note whether a bill reflects unusual occupancy, temporary equipment, or a period before a planned electrification project.

Build a household-demand picture

  1. Collect monthly usage in kilowatt-hours and the corresponding rate information from recent utility bills.
  2. Calculate annual use and mark high- and low-demand seasons.
  3. List likely changes during the system’s life, such as replacing gas appliances with electric models, adding air-conditioning, or charging a vehicle.
  4. Tell each installer whether the goal is maximum annual offset, lower daytime purchases, backup capability, or another outcome.
  5. Ask each proposal to state the assumed annual use and explain how future loads were treated.

Use estimates as planning tools, not guarantees

PVWatts can provide an initial estimate for a grid-connected photovoltaic system. Enter the address or a nearby location, array size, roof orientation and tilt, and other available assumptions, then use the result to frame installer conversations. It is not a substitute for a custom site proposal. A professional estimate should identify the proposed modules and inverter, array layout, shade assumptions, losses, and expected annual and seasonal production.

For context, the DOE homeowner guide reports that the National Renewable Energy Laboratory uses an average residential system size of 7.15 kilowatts DC, with a 3–11 kW range. The guide does not state a year for that figure. It is a broad reference, not a recommendation for your home: roof area, electricity use, local weather, utility rules, and economics determine the appropriate size.

Compare production estimates on equal assumptions

Two proposals can quote the same nominal DC capacity and predict different output because they use different weather files, shade assumptions, orientations, equipment, or loss factors. Request the assumptions in writing and compare proposals using the same annual load, site conditions, and utility scenario where possible. Look at monthly or seasonal output, not only one annual total; a system’s value depends on when electricity is produced as well as how much is produced.

What a complete rooftop solar system includes

Modules are only one part of a code-compliant system. Photovoltaic modules produce direct-current (DC) electricity. Mounting hardware secures them to the roof, electrical equipment connects the array safely, and an inverter converts DC into alternating-current (AC) electricity that the home can use. The proposal should identify every major component and the responsibility for permitting, inspection, interconnection, and commissioning.

Component Role Questions to ask
PV modules Convert sunlight into DC electricity What model, rated DC capacity, degradation or performance warranty, and physical dimensions are proposed?
Inverter Converts DC to usable AC and manages grid connection Is the design using a central/string inverter or module-level electronics? What are the equipment and labor warranties?
Mounting and attachments Secures modules to the roof and transfers loads to the structure Which roof penetrations, flashing methods, wind or snow assumptions, and waterproofing warranties apply?
Electrical and safety equipment Provides disconnects, protection, wiring, monitoring, and code-required connections Are service-panel work, permitting, inspection, and utility interconnection included in the contract?
Monitoring Reports production and may flag equipment faults What data is available, for how long, and who supports troubleshooting?
Battery, if included Stores solar electricity for later use and may provide outage support What usable capacity, operating mode, backup circuits, warranty, and installation conditions are specified?

String and module-level inverter choices

A proposal may use a string inverter or electronics at the module level. DOE notes that microinverters can allow panels to operate independently, which can be useful when some modules are shaded. That benefit must be weighed against the proposed cost, service approach, roof layout, and warranty. Ask the installer to explain why the selected architecture suits the actual shade pattern and whether one failed unit affects one module or a larger section of the array.

Should you add a battery?

Storage is optional and serves goals different from adding more PV capacity. A battery can hold solar electricity for evening use, when the array is no longer producing, and a solar-plus-storage system may support selected home loads during an outage when it is designed and installed for that purpose.

Request a battery quote separately from the PV quote. Identify usable—not merely nameplate—capacity, expected operating mode, backup circuits, transfer equipment, round-trip or other stated performance assumptions, warranty duration, replacement responsibility, and monitoring. Compare the battery’s cost with the value of evening self-use or backup power for your household. A battery does not automatically make a grid-tied system operate during an outage; the system must include the equipment and controls designed for that function.

Will solar save money at your address?

Physical rooftop potential and economic potential are different. A roof may have enough unshaded area for modules but still be a poor financial project if installation costs, roof work, financing terms, electricity rates, or export compensation do not support the expected value.

Check the utility’s current rules

The value of each kilowatt-hour depends on whether the home uses it directly, stores it, or sends it to the grid. Utilities differ in their rates, time-of-use structures, fixed charges, interconnection procedures, and credits or payments for exported electricity. Those terms can change. Use the current tariff and written utility documentation for the service address rather than a national average.

A system sized to roughly match annual consumption will not necessarily eliminate bills. Production varies by month, the home may use power when the panels are not producing, and fixed or demand-related charges may remain. Ask the installer to model self-consumption, exported energy, and the utility’s actual compensation under the proposed rate plan.

Compare the contract, not just the headline price

Economic item What to compare
Installed cost Total project price, including roof work, electrical upgrades, permits, interconnection, monitoring, and battery work if applicable
Payment structure Cash price or financing amount, interest, term, escalation clauses, deposits, and cancellation rights
Production basis Modeled annual and seasonal output, degradation assumptions, shade treatment, and what happens if estimates are not met
Utility value Current import rates, export credits or payments, fixed charges, and time-of-use effects for the address
Operations Monitoring, maintenance, service response, warranty exclusions, and ownership of renewable-energy attributes where relevant to the contract

How long do panels and inverters last?

DOE guidance for buyers of homes with solar gives broad service-life context: residential panels usually last 20–25 years, while string inverters usually last 10–15 years. The surfaced guide does not state a year for these figures. They are not guarantees or substitutes for the actual product warranties. Ask for the component age, warranty documents, transfer conditions, production records, and service history when evaluating an existing system.

Plan for lifecycle events in the financial comparison. An inverter replacement may occur during a long panel life, and roof work may require temporary array removal. Confirm who pays for removal and reinstallation if a roof repair is needed during the contract or warranty period.

How to compare installers and proposals

Seek assessments from multiple qualified, insured installers. DOE consumer guidance identifies NABCEP as an example of a reputable installer-certification organization; verify the specific credentials, licenses, insurance, and local experience that apply in your jurisdiction.

Give every installer the same information

  • Roof age, repair history, replacement plans, and any engineering or inspection reports.
  • Recent utility bills showing annual and seasonal consumption.
  • Planned changes to appliances, heating, cooling, occupancy, or vehicle charging.
  • Your priorities: annual offset, daytime savings, outage backup, low maintenance, or a particular roof-preservation concern.

Demand a written scope

  • Scaled array layout showing each roof plane, setbacks, obstructions, and shade assumptions.
  • Module, inverter, mounting, electrical, monitoring, and battery specifications.
  • Expected annual and monthly production with the weather source and modeling assumptions.
  • Permitting, inspection, utility interconnection, commissioning, and service responsibilities.
  • Equipment, workmanship, roof-penetration, and production-related warranties, including exclusions and transfer rules.
  • Payment schedule, change-order process, completion conditions, and procedures for delays or failed inspections.

Do not accept a proposal that gives only a panel count and a system price. The useful comparison is the complete system, its modeled output, the assumptions behind that output, and the obligations that continue after installation.

A practical decision workflow

  1. Document demand. Assemble bills, calculate annual and seasonal use, and record credible future loads.
  2. Inspect the roof. Confirm remaining life, repair needs, usable area, structure, access, and likely replacement timing.
  3. Screen the site. Use PVWatts or a mapping tool for a preliminary estimate, while treating remote imagery as provisional.
  4. Obtain site-specific designs. Ask several qualified, insured installers to model orientation, tilt, shade, equipment, and production.
  5. Verify utility economics. Check the current rate schedule, export treatment, interconnection requirements, and any address-specific charges.
  6. Compare complete proposals. Evaluate output, components, warranties, roof coordination, contract terms, and installer support together.
  7. Decide on storage separately. Add a battery only when evening-use or backup objectives justify its cost and the proposed design meets those objectives.
  8. Coordinate the work. Complete roof replacement or structural repairs before the array, and retain permits, warranties, manuals, and commissioning records.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by panel wattage alone

A higher-rated module does not compensate for a shaded roof, poor layout, unsuitable inverter, or insufficient usable area. Compare modeled output for the entire system and the home’s demand.

Assuming south-facing is mandatory

South-facing, moderately sloped, unshaded surfaces are often favorable, but rejecting every other roof plane can discard viable capacity. Require a site-specific comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trusting a remote estimate as a final quote

Satellite-based tools can miss obstructions, roof damage, and structural issues. Use them for screening, then obtain an on-site evaluation and written assumptions.

Ignoring the roof’s replacement date

Installing over a roof that soon needs replacement can add removal, storage, and reinstallation work. Coordinate both projects when practical.

Using national savings claims

Utility rates and export rules are local and change over time. Calculate value from the current service address and the proposed contract.

Buying a battery for an undefined goal

What to bring to a final decision

Before signing, you should be able to answer five questions in writing: Is the roof ready for the system’s expected life? What annual and seasonal production is predicted for this exact layout? How does that production compare with current and future household use? What will the utility pay or credit for exported electricity? Which component, installer, and roof warranties apply, and who handles service or roof-related removal?

This guidance is general U.S.-oriented consumer information, not a structural, electrical, legal, or financial recommendation for a particular property. Local building and electrical rules, utility programs, incentives, certified-equipment requirements, weather conditions, and installer availability vary.
