A smart switch and a smart-home control panel solve different problems: a switch adds connected control at a light circuit, while a panel gives you a screen-based way to manage several devices or functions. Before choosing either, check the electrical fit and the platform features you will actually use—not just whether the product carries a Matter label.
Choose the control form that fits the job
Start with where and how people need to control the home. A wall switch preserves familiar, physical access to a light circuit; a touchscreen switch adds scenes or shortcuts at that point. A separate panel is better suited to a shared dashboard for lighting and other systems, but may depend on a specific home-automation ecosystem.

For 3-way or 4-way circuits
TP-Link documents the Tapo S515 for single-pole, 3-way, and 4-way circuits. It is listed for 100–120 V, 50/60 Hz, with a 15 A general-use maximum and a 600 W incandescent maximum. The product uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. In multi-way installations, TP-Link says the switch needs a constant flow of power and provides placement instructions; follow the model’s installation documentation for the exact circuit rather than treating these details as universal smart-switch rules. See TP-Link’s S515 specifications and installation information.
For a single-pole circuit
The Tapo TS15 is listed for 100–120 V, 50/60 Hz and 15 A general use. TP-Link explicitly says it is not compatible with 3-way wiring. The vendor describes a separately sold Tapo smart button and hub as a wireless multi-way workaround; that arrangement does not make the TS15 compatible with wired 3-way circuits. Sensor-based automations also require a Tapo Hub and sensors. See TP-Link’s TS15 specifications.

For a touchscreen switch
Aqara lists the US-market S100 (WS-K06E) at 100–240 V, with a maximum of 10 A incandescent or 400 W LED/CFL, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread connectivity. These specifications are for this model and market; check the documentation for the regional version you intend to install. See Aqara’s S100 US details.
- Confirm regional voltage and the exact model number.
- Check the existing circuit type and the model’s line, neutral, load, and placement requirements in its installation instructions.
- Match the load type and wattage to the product’s limits.
- If you are unsure about mains wiring, have a qualified electrician assess the circuit. TP-Link gives the same advice for its switch installation guidance.
Understand what Matter does—and does not—guarantee
Matter certification does not mean every device feature will appear in every smart-home app or work without the required controller. TP-Link says a selected third-party platform hub is required for its Matter integration. Aqara says the S100’s wireless-button and power-monitoring functions vary by Matter platform. Check both the switch’s requirements and the controller or hub you intend to use before purchase.

- NEVER COME HOME TO A DARK HOUSE AGAIN – Schedule exterior lights to turn on at sunset for added safety, comfort, and convenience
- USE YOUR VOICE FOR HANDS‑FREE CONTROL – Works with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple Siri so you can adjust lights without lifting a finger
- CONTROL LIGHTS FROM ANYWHERE – Check if lights are on and adjust them remotely using your smartphone, whether you’re home, at work, or on vacation
- SET IT AND FORGET IT - Use the My Leviton app to schedule your lights to turn on and off when you want
- THE MOST CONNECTED – Works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant, and is Matter ready out of the box
Feature support can differ even when basic device control works. For example, TP-Link says S515 energy monitoring is not supported by most Matter-enabled apps yet and directs users to the Tapo app for that information. Verify where schedules, scenes, sensor triggers, and energy data are managed rather than assuming the Matter connection exposes all of them.
Decide whether a dedicated panel is worthwhile
A panel offers a shared visual interface; it is not simply a larger smart switch. Its value depends on the devices and systems it can control, where it can be installed, and whether its ecosystem matches the home.
Rank #4
- 【Matter: All-Round Compatibility】With Matter, users are no longer tied to specific platforms and works with all certified smart home platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. You can control all your smart home devices from a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps for different devices.
- 【Matter: Smooth LAN Control】With Matter, all devices in your LAN communicate efficiently, even if your internet goes offline. A direct device-to-device interaction eliminates the need for a 'forwarding' device. For instance, a Matter switch or sensor can control a Matter bulb without any cloud service. Once set up, direct communication between Matter devices on your local network is easily achieved.
- 【Matter: Multi-Admin】Matter also allows you to control devices via multiple smart home systems at the same time through its Multi-Admin feature. That means you can turn on your lights from the SmartThings app on a Samsung smartphone, dim them by asking Alexa on an Amazon Echo speaker, and then turn them off from the Apple Home app on an iPad.
- 【App-Guided Install】The Tapo app guides you through step-by-step setup. Requires neutral wiring and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Consulting an electrician is recommended if you’re unfamiliar with electrical wiring.
- 【Voice Control】Enjoy the hands-free convenience of controlling the lights in your home with your voice via Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant. Perfect for times when your hands are full or entering a dark room.

The S1 Plus (MP-K05D) is a desktop device with a 5 V, 2 A power input and Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Bluetooth. Aqara describes Matter-device control through Aqara Home and bridging for Aqara Zigbee accessories. Check its desktop placement and the exact device-control compatibility before treating it as a universal dashboard. Aqara S1 Plus specifications and functions.
Wall-mounted panel: ABB OneTouch
ABB positions OneTouch as an interface for ABB-free@home and compatible ABB Welcome door-entry systems, alongside Matter-enabled devices. ABB says it can manage door answering, lighting, blinds, temperature, music, and more from one panel. Its installer information states a capacity of up to 150 ABB-free@home wireless devices; this is a vendor-stated, ecosystem-specific capacity, not a general limit for control panels. Confirm the ABB system fit, supported integrations, and installation method for the intended home. ABB OneTouch system and installer information.

Treat energy monitoring as information, not a savings promise
The S515 and S100 product information describes energy monitoring, but monitoring alone does not establish that a device will reduce a household’s energy use. No general independently verified savings figure is established for these products. In the S515’s case, TP-Link says energy monitoring is not supported by most Matter-enabled apps yet and points users to Tapo for the data.
TP-Link also attributes an over-9× relay-life extension to laboratory results for the S515’s zero-crossing detection. The manufacturer says the actual effect varies with working conditions and that the feature is mainly suitable for capacitive loads such as lights, TVs, computers, and chargers. This is a vendor laboratory claim, not independent evidence or a general guarantee of switch life. TP-Link’s S515 product information.
Quick Recap
Use this buying checklist
- Choose the interface. Decide whether you need connected control at a light switch, a touchscreen at that location, or a separate desktop or wall-mounted dashboard.
- Identify the circuit. Establish whether it is single-pole, 3-way, or 4-way before selecting an in-wall model.
- Verify electrical ratings. Match regional voltage, wiring requirements, load type, and wattage to the exact model’s instructions.
- Map the platform. Confirm the required hub or controller, then check that the app you plan to use exposes the functions you want.
- Check ecosystem dependencies. For a panel, verify its device integrations, bridge role, placement, and system requirements.
- Separate convenience from evidence. Treat monitoring as a way to view usage, not proof of savings, and treat manufacturer performance figures as claims with the stated conditions.
