Choose business internet by matching the connection to your busiest online workflows, confirming what is actually offered at your address, and deciding which work must continue if the primary link fails. A backup is useful only when it can carry the applications and transactions your staff need—and when they have tested them.

How much internet speed does my small business need?

There is no evidence-based Mbps-per-employee rule that fits every small business. Start with the work your connection supports and the number of people and devices using it at the same time. List point-of-sale and card authorization, cloud applications, video meetings, hosted voice, remote access, customer-facing systems, and file synchronization. Mark each as essential during an outage, usable in reduced mode, or safe to pause.

Consider download and upload separately. Download capacity affects receiving data, while upload capacity matters when staff send files, make video calls, use hosted voice, or connect remotely. Simultaneous use and sustained activity matter more than a single headline speed.

The SBA Office of Advocacy’s 2026 broadband issue brief uses fixed service of at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload as its definition for analysis—not as a recommendation for every business. The brief covers businesses with 1–499 employees. It reports that 83.9% of small-business establishments had terrestrial-provider access to those speeds in 2024, compared with 48.1% in 2014. Those are national availability figures, not local service guarantees or measurements of what a particular business needs. Read the SBA Office of Advocacy brief.

What internet providers are available at my business address?

Availability is specific to the service address. Enter the workplace address in the FCC National Broadband Map to review provider-reported fixed options, including fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless. The map displays technologies and maximum advertised download and upload speeds reported for a location; these are not a performance guarantee. Confirm current offers, installation details, and terms directly with providers. The FCC map’s 2024 access figures also show that 74.8% of small-business establishments had access to at least 250 Mbps download and 25 Mbps upload, while 51.2% had access to at least 1,000 Mbps download and 100 Mbps upload. These national figures do not establish what is offered at your address. SBA Office of Advocacy, 2026.

The FCC map separates fixed service from mobile coverage. Its mobile depiction indicates where a consumer should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle; it does not establish indoor coverage at your workplace. Verify cellular reception inside the building before relying on it as backup. FCC Broadband Data Collection Help Center.

How should I compare business internet offers?

Compare options available at the same address and evaluate the details that affect daily operations, not just the advertised download figure. A service type is not automatically the best choice everywhere: local availability, business requirements, and the terms offered all matter.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
  • Advertised download and upload speeds, and the connection technology.
  • Reliability needs for your essential workflows and any stated support terms.
  • Contract duration, installation charges, equipment costs, and the cost of a secondary line.
  • Whether the provider or access path could share a point of failure with your primary service.

The FCC map is useful for finding reported local options, but provider confirmation is necessary for current offers and installation specifics. No national access statistic can promise a particular provider, speed, price, or uptime at an individual business location.

What should I use as backup internet for my business?

Choose a backup path based on the failures you need to withstand and the minimum work that must continue. Options to investigate include a second fixed line, cellular broadband or a hotspot, fixed wireless, and satellite where available and suitable. A backup that shares a vulnerable access path with the primary link may not help during the outage that matters; consider whether it uses a different provider or technology. Check that cellular service is usable indoors if it is part of the plan.

A failover setup may need a router or firewall that supports two WAN connections, sufficient backup bandwidth for priority tasks, and power for the network equipment and modem. Confirm compatibility with the existing ISP equipment and how the secondary connection will be configured. A dual-WAN router is one equipment category to consider; the right setup depends on the interfaces, throughput, modem requirements, and configuration needs. ITECS’s small-business failover checklist describes an independent secondary path, dual-WAN edge equipment, adequate power and bandwidth, application testing, and a controlled return to the normal connection.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Connectivity failover does not itself protect business data, restore a cloud provider’s service, or guarantee that a payment processor or application will accept traffic from a different IP address. Treat those as separate dependencies to verify.

How do I keep taking payments if the internet goes down?

First confirm with your payment processor and point-of-sale provider what happens when the primary connection is unavailable. If a backup link is part of the plan, test card authorization and the actual checkout workflow over that link; do not assume that a working router connection means payments will work. Ask providers whether their service supports the alternate connection and what restrictions apply. The available evidence does not establish a universal offline-payment capability or a guarantee that payment transactions will work during an outage.

Decide in advance what staff should do if both connections fail, including how to communicate with customers and how to record or defer work without compromising payment or data-handling rules. Practice the procedure with the employees responsible for carrying it out.

How can I test internet failover?

Test business outcomes rather than relying on a router’s status light or a “connected” indicator. ITECS’s August 27, 2026 checklist puts the emphasis on whether designated employees can complete the transactions that matter during an outage. ITECS failover checklist.

  1. Write down which workflows must continue, which staff will test them, and how often the business will run a test.
  2. Arrange a controlled test that switches the connection to the backup path; use the router or firewall’s supported failover procedure.
  3. Have designated employees try the priority workflows, such as signing in to cloud tools, making a call, accessing remote systems, and completing a payment transaction.
  4. Record what failed, including application access, sign-in, call quality, or transaction processing, and resolve the issue with the relevant network or application provider.
  5. Test the return to the primary connection and make sure staff know how to communicate and operate during an outage.

Tailor emergency planning to the business’s particular risks and practice it with staff, as the SBA recommends in its business emergency-preparedness guidance.

How should I protect network access and business data?

Include basic network security and data recovery in the continuity plan. The FTC advises small businesses to use current router security settings, change default credentials, restrict access to business networks, and back up data regularly. Keep backup copies disconnected from the network so they can help with recovery if an attacker reaches the network. FTC cybersecurity guidance for small businesses.

Internet redundancy and data backups address different risks: a second connection can help preserve access during a connectivity failure, while recoverable copies help restore data. Neither substitutes for the other.
