The right shoe depends on two things: the floor you walk on and what is contaminating it. A sole that grips wet ceramic tile may perform differently on oily concrete, polished metal, dusty vinyl, or a floor covered with food residue. Start by identifying the exact surface and spill, then look for model-specific slip testing, an outsole designed for that contamination, a secure fit, and a maintenance plan. No shoe is slip-proof, and footwear does not replace spill cleanup or other workplace controls.
Start with the floor and the contaminant
“Smooth floor” describes a finish, not a single hazard. Tile, sealed concrete, vinyl, stainless steel and painted metal can have different friction characteristics. The same floor can also change dramatically when it is dry, wet, soapy, oily, icy or coated with food residue. Choose for the combination you actually encounter rather than for a broad label such as all-purpose slip resistant.
| Underfoot condition | Why it matters | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Dry polished tile or vinyl | Dust and fine debris can reduce contact between the outsole and floor. | Evidence for dry, smooth indoor flooring and a tread that can be cleaned easily. |
| Water on ceramic tile or sealed concrete | A fluid film can separate the rubber from the floor. | Wet-tile or wet-concrete test conditions, not only a dry-floor claim. |
| Detergent or dilute soap | Soap can be more difficult than plain water because it changes the fluid film. | Test data that identifies a soapy solution and the floor material used. |
| Cooking oil, grease or lubricant | Oil behaves differently from water; a shoe that performs well when wet may not perform well in oil. | Oil or grease test conditions for the exact model, plus an outsole compound intended for that exposure. |
| Food residue or sticky spills | Sticky material can clog tread or create unpredictable patches of adhesion and release. | Openings that can be cleaned, practical wearer trials and a documented cleaning routine. |
| Ice, frost or cold metal | Temperature and ice can change both the floor and the sole compound. | Evidence for icy or cold conditions; do not infer performance from a water test. |
| Solid debris outdoors | Gravel, dust and other particles need space to clear from the tread. | An open pattern suited to debris, while confirming that it remains appropriate for any indoor wet areas. |
Health and safety guidance from the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) specifically warns that footwear that performs well when wet may not suit oily surfaces or sticky food spillages. Treat every test result as condition-specific.

A marketing phrase is not a test report
A generic label does not identify the floor, contaminant, test speed, angle, load, temperature or whether the exact model was tested. Ask the manufacturer or seller for the model’s documentation and look for:
- The complete model and outsole version covered by the result.
- The flooring material, such as ceramic tile, steel, vinyl or concrete.
- The contaminant, such as water, diluted soap, oil, grease or ice.
- The test method, edition and laboratory conditions.
- Coefficient-of-friction (COF) values or another clearly defined performance result.
- Any limits, exclusions or warnings about surfaces not represented by the test.
HSE notes that test surfaces cannot represent every surface a worker may encounter. A certificate is useful evidence for the tested conditions, not a universal promise.

ASTM F2913-24: a comparative whole-shoe test method
ASTM F2913-24 is an active whole-shoe laboratory method for evaluating relative slip performance between footwear and flooring under reproducible conditions. Its scope includes water, ice, oil and grease. Because it is a test method, it allows controlled comparisons; it is not a guarantee that the shoe will prevent every slip in daily use. Check that the test used the model and outsole you are buying and that its conditions resemble your floor and spill.
ASTM F3445-24: a footwear performance specification
ASTM F3445-24 is an active footwear performance specification with minimum slip-resistance requirements. ASTM cautions that passing compliance testing does not establish performance for every situation. If your hazard involves an alternative floor, a particular chemical, unusual temperature or a food-processing residue, you may need additional product information or a representative trial.
Do not turn OSHA’s 0.5 figure into a shoe rule
OSHA’s March 21, 2003 interpretation says that no OSHA standard mandates a particular COF for walking or working surfaces. The letter discusses 0.5 as guidance in a nonmandatory appendix, not as an absolute value or a universal footwear pass/fail threshold. The letter states: “A COF of 0.5 is not intended to be an absolute standard value.” It also says: “OSHA does not have any standards that mandate a particular COF for walking/working surfaces.”
That context concerns walking-surface friction, not a requirement that every shoe reach 0.5 under every condition. If a supplier quotes a number, ask what was measured, on which surface, with which contaminant and under which method.

Regional markings need context
HSE discusses European SRA, SRB and SRC classifications and the corresponding test surfaces: ceramic tile with dilute soap solution, smooth steel with glycerol, or both. Such markings describe represented test conditions; they are not guarantees for every smooth floor or spill. Marking conventions and standards can change by jurisdiction and edition, so check the current product documentation for the market where you will use the footwear.
Inspect the outsole, not just the label
Sole compound
The rubber or polymer compound affects how the shoe interacts with a floor. HSE’s general guidance is that softer soles often work well with fluid contaminants and indoor environments. That is a qualified starting point, not a substitute for testing: a soft compound can wear faster, collect debris or behave differently at low temperatures. Ask what compound was used and whether the performance claim applies after normal wear.

Tread shape and spacing
Close-packed tread generally offers many contact edges on smooth indoor floors and can work well with fluid contaminants. More open patterns give solid debris somewhere to clear and are often more suitable outdoors. Deep, widely spaced lugs are not automatically better on a polished indoor floor; they can reduce the amount of rubber in contact with a smooth surface or become uncomfortable during long shifts.
Look at the spaces between lugs, the depth and the direction of channels. A pattern that traps oil, dough, grit or detergent loses its intended geometry until it is cleaned. Choose a design you can inspect and wash thoroughly.

Edge coverage and contact area
Check that the tread reaches the areas where your foot actually loads the floor, including the heel and forefoot edges. A shoe can have an impressive central pattern but little usable rubber at the perimeter. Avoid judging traction from a showroom glance alone; compare the outsole with the motion and stance required by your job.
Use this selection process
- Map the hazard. Write down the floor material, whether it is smooth or textured, the usual contaminant, temperature and whether the exposure is continuous or occasional.
- Define other safety requirements. Determine whether your work also requires toe protection, puncture-resistant soles, electrical protection, chemical compatibility or a prescribed uniform. Slip performance is only one part of the selection.
- Request model-specific evidence. Ask for the exact model and outsole, test method and edition, flooring, contaminant and results. Reject an answer that only repeats “non-slip” without conditions.
- Compare the outsole designs. For smooth indoor floors with fluids, prioritize a cleanable, close-packed pattern and a compound supported by relevant wet or soapy testing. For outdoor solid debris, consider more open spacing, while checking any indoor use separately.
- Check construction and fit. Confirm that the heel is held securely, the foot does not slide inside the shoe and the toe box allows natural movement. A shoe that causes pain, blisters or instability is unlikely to be worn correctly.
- Conduct a representative trial. Have the people who will wear the shoes use trial pairs on the actual floor, with normal tasks and approved cleaning procedures. Include different foot shapes and shift lengths.
- Record the decision. Keep the model, size range, test documentation, trial conditions, cleaning method and replacement trigger in your purchasing or safety record.
Balance traction with fit and comfort
Secure fit prevents movement inside the shoe
Measure both feet near the end of the day, when feet are usually largest, and fit the socks used at work. Your heel should remain seated when walking, while your toes should not touch the front. Laces, a secure fastening system or an adjustable closure can help maintain contact; an overly loose slip-on may allow the foot to move even when the outsole has good laboratory results.
Comfort is a safety factor
Workers may remove or avoid uncomfortable footwear. HSE therefore advises trial pairs and representative wearer trials. Check pressure points, heat, moisture, arch support, weight and the ability to climb stairs, crouch, turn and stand for a full shift. A slightly heavier protective shoe may be justified for another hazard, but do not assume extra bulk improves slip resistance.
Keep required protection separate from slip claims
OSHA’s foot-protection rule addresses specified workplace hazards such as falling or rolling objects, objects piercing soles and certain electrical hazards. It does not establish a universal smooth-floor slip-resistance rule. Select any required protective construction first, then verify that the particular model also has evidence relevant to your floor and contaminant.

Run a realistic trial before committing
Laboratory data narrows the choices; a controlled workplace trial shows whether the shoe works for your tasks. Do not deliberately create an unsafe spill to test a shoe. Instead, use normal operations, approved test areas and your existing spill-control procedure.
- Test on each important floor type, not only the easiest area.
- Include normal water, detergent, oil or food exposures if those are part of the job.
- Observe starts, stops, turns, stairs, ramps and carrying tasks.
- Check the outsole after the trial for clogging, separation or rapid wear.
- Collect feedback from several wearers rather than relying on one person’s preference.
- Document conditions so a later purchase can be compared fairly.
If a shoe performs well in the trial, keep the same model and outsole specification when reordering. A visually similar replacement may use a different compound or tread.

Grip can decline when tread is worn or clogged. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and your workplace’s hygiene rules. Remove embedded debris before it fills the channels, and inspect the sole during routine checks.
- Look for flattened lugs, smooth patches, cracking, cuts, delamination and chemical damage.
- Check whether oil, dough, detergent or grit remains in the tread after cleaning.
- Compare the outsole with a new pair if wear is difficult to judge.
- Replace footwear before the tread is worn to a dangerous condition, not after a slip occurs.
“Oil-resistant” usually describes resistance to damage or swelling from oil. It does not necessarily mean that the outsole is slip-resistant on an oily floor. Require separate slip evidence for oil or grease.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Buying the first shoe marked non-slip | The label may not identify a tested floor or contaminant. | Request model-specific conditions and results. |
| Using wet-floor results for oil | Water and oil form different films and interact differently with compounds. | Require oil or grease evidence for an oily hazard. |
| Assuming a deep lug is always safer | Open lugs can reduce contact on smooth indoor floors or clog with residue. | Match spacing and depth to the floor and debris. |
| Treating a COF of 0.5 as an OSHA shoe threshold | OSHA describes 0.5 as nonmandatory appendix guidance, not an absolute value. | Interpret any COF with its test method and conditions. |
| Ignoring wear | Flattened or clogged tread may no longer perform as intended. | Clean, inspect and replace on a defined schedule. |
| Choosing solely by price or appearance | Fit, durability and cleanability determine whether the shoe is worn and maintained. | Use a representative wearer trial and record the result. |
| Using shoes instead of housekeeping | Footwear cannot remove a spill or correct a damaged floor. | Keep spill response, drainage, lighting and floor maintenance in place. |
Apply the guidance to typical situations
Restaurant or commercial kitchen
Expect water, detergent, oil and sticky food residue rather than one consistent contaminant. Request results for the relevant wet and oily conditions, choose a tread that can be cleaned during the shift, and verify that hygiene procedures do not damage the compound. Include turning and carrying tasks in the trial because a straight-line walk on a dry floor is not representative.
Hospital, care facility or office with polished flooring
Water and cleaning solution may be more common than oil. Favor documented smooth-indoor and soapy-floor performance, a close-packed pattern that does not trap debris, and a comfortable fit for long periods of walking and standing. Confirm that the outsole can be cleaned without leaving residue on the floor.

Identify whether the main hazard is water, lubricant, metal dust, gravel or a combination. You may need open tread for solid debris, but do not infer wet or oily performance from the outdoor pattern. Add any required toe, puncture or electrical protection and trial the complete model, not a casual shoe with a similar-looking sole.
Cold room or icy exterior route
Ice and cold can change performance enough that water testing is not an adequate proxy. Seek evidence for icy or low-temperature conditions, use the required route controls and reassess the outsole as temperatures and surfaces change.
Purchasing checklist
- Have we named the exact floor material?
- Have we listed every common contaminant, including detergent, oil and food residue?
- Does the documentation identify the exact model and outsole?
- Are the test method, edition, surface and contaminant stated?
- Do the results represent our conditions, or do we need a trial?
- Does the outsole balance contact area, drainage and cleanability?
- Does the shoe meet separate protective requirements?
- Can workers wear it comfortably for the full task or shift?
- Do we have cleaning, inspection and replacement instructions?
- Are spill response and floor-maintenance controls still in place?
Bottom line
Choose shoes for the specific floor-and-contaminant combination, not for the words “slip-resistant” alone. Give greatest weight to model-specific testing such as ASTM F2913-24 or applicable ASTM F3445-24 documentation, inspect the compound and tread, verify fit through a representative trial, and maintain the outsole until replacement. Treat every result as conditional: a shoe can reduce risk without making a smooth floor universally safe.
