For most drivers, start with the RYOBI 18V ONE+ High Pressure Digital Inflator (PCL001B). RYOBI explicitly lists it for car tires, and its digital gauge and automatic shutoff make it the most direct fit for correcting low tire pressure during a trip. Add the 18V ONE+ Jump Starter (P7101A) only if you have a compatible battery, your vehicle manual permits the procedure, and you understand its engine-capacity limit.
Neither tool is a complete roadside plan. NHTSA’s road-trip guidance also calls for a phone and charger, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, warning devices, a tire-pressure gauge, a jack and ground mat, gloves, basic repair tools, food, water, and emergency blankets. Use the RYOBI tools to supplement those essentials, not replace them.
The short buying answer
Choose the PCL001B when your primary concern is a slow leak or tires that need topping up between fuel stops. It is a handheld, high-pressure inflator designed for car tires and other small inflatables. Choose the P7101A only for the separate problem of a discharged 12-volt vehicle battery. Choose the P739 one-gallon compressor when you accept a larger package in exchange for a compressor explicitly marketed for roadside tire inflation.

There is no evidence establishing one universally best capacity for every vehicle kit, and the exact storage limits for leaving a battery in a vehicle depend on the battery model. Check that manual before storing a pack in a hot or freezing car.

What each RYOBI option is for
| Tool or component | Primary roadside task | Published specifications or claims | What to consider before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCL001B 18V ONE+ High Pressure Digital Inflator | Top up a car tire or other small tire | Up to 160 PSI, LCD pressure gauge, on-board accessory storage, and automatic shutoff. RYOBI describes it as ideal for filling car, bike, and other small tires and sports balls. (Current RYOBI listing, accessed 2026.) | Best match for a compact kit. It supplies air; it does not repair a puncture or replace a spare tire, jack, or roadside service. |
| P7101A 18V ONE+ Jump Starter | Attempt a jump-start on a vehicle with a discharged 12-volt battery | RYOBI states that it works with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ battery, provides 1600 peak amps, can jump-start engines up to 6.0L V8, and can provide up to 20 jump starts per charge with a 2Ah battery. It includes anti-spark technology, reverse-polarity protection, and an LED work light. (Current RYOBI listing, accessed 2026.) | Optional and vehicle-dependent. Confirm the engine specification and follow the exact jump-start procedure in the vehicle owner’s manual. |
| P739 one-gallon compressor | Roadside tire inflation | RYOBI markets it for roadside tire inflation and lists up to 120 PSI. (Current RYOBI listing, accessed 2026.) | A larger-format alternative. Select it when storage space is available and the larger compressor format suits your kit; compactness favors the handheld inflator for a tightly packed car. |
| Compatible 18V ONE+ battery | Power source for the selected tool | RYOBI describes the 18V ONE+ platform as spanning more than 300 products. (Current RYOBI platform listing, accessed 2026.) | Platform breadth is not proof that every battery fits every tool or generation. Verify the exact model-to-model compatibility and read the battery manual for storage limits. |
Choose by the failure you are preparing for
Low tire pressure or a slow leak
Make the PCL001B your first RYOBI purchase if the likely problem is a tire that has lost air. Before a long trip, check all tires when they are cold and compare the reading with the pressure shown on the vehicle’s tire placard or in the owner’s manual. NHTSA identifies underinflation as the leading cause of tire failure. The number molded into a tire sidewall is a maximum, not the vehicle’s recommended operating pressure.
An inflator is useful when the tire is intact but low. It cannot seal a puncture, remove a nail, or make a damaged sidewall safe. If air escapes rapidly, the tire is visibly damaged, or the recommended pressure cannot be maintained, stop driving and use the spare or call roadside assistance.
Dead or weak vehicle battery
The P7101A addresses a different failure: a vehicle that will not start because its 12-volt battery is discharged. Treat the stated 6.0L V8 limit, 1600 peak-amp figure, and up-to-20-start claim with the 2Ah battery as manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee for every vehicle or condition. Engine size, battery condition, temperature, and the vehicle’s electrical design can affect the outcome.
Recommended Free Tools
Read the owner’s manual before carrying or using a jump starter. Some vehicles specify dedicated jump points, a particular connection order, or restrictions on jump-starting. If the manual prohibits the procedure, if the battery is physically damaged or frozen, or if the cause of the no-start is unknown, arrange professional assistance instead.

Need for a higher-volume compressor
The P739 is the choice when you prefer a one-gallon compressor that RYOBI explicitly positions for roadside inflation and you have room for it. The published 120 PSI maximum is not a recommendation for any particular tire. As with the handheld inflator, use the vehicle’s placard or manual for the target pressure.
Build the kit in a practical order
- Check the vehicle first. Locate the tire placard, owner’s manual, spare tire, jack, jack points, locking-wheel-nut key if applicable, and factory tow or recovery instructions. Confirm whether the vehicle has a conventional spare, a temporary spare, or an inflation-sealant system.
- Select the primary tool. For a compact kit aimed at tire-pressure corrections, choose the PCL001B. Add the P7101A only when its jump-start function addresses a real need and your vehicle documentation supports using it. Choose the P739 instead when the larger compressor format is acceptable.
- Verify compatibility before packing. Match the exact tool model with the exact 18V ONE+ battery model. Do not infer compatibility merely from the platform’s product count. Charge the battery according to its manual and test-fit it to the tool at home.
- Pack measuring and connection accessories. Keep a separate tire-pressure gauge, the inflator’s supplied accessories, the jump starter’s cables if you selected it, gloves, and a flashlight together so they remain accessible without unloading the entire vehicle.
- Add the non-tool safety equipment. Include warning devices, a first-aid kit, phone and charger, food, water, emergency blankets, a jack and ground mat, and basic repair supplies. NHTSA includes these categories in its roadside-kit guidance.
- Store the battery deliberately. Follow the battery manual’s temperature and charging instructions. If the manual does not authorize long-term vehicle storage, carry the pack only when needed or keep it in a more controlled location rather than assuming a parked car is suitable.
- Rehearse the procedure. Practice reading the tire placard, connecting the inflator, fitting the battery, and locating the vehicle’s approved jump points at home. A roadside emergency is the wrong time to discover that a connector, adapter, or access panel is missing.
How to use the inflator without overinflating a tire
- Get clear of traffic. Move as far from moving vehicles as the location allows, switch on hazard lights, place warning devices according to local rules and the device instructions, and wear a reflective layer if you have one. Do not treat the inflator as protection from passing traffic.
- Inspect before adding air. Look for a flat spot, torn sidewall, exposed cord, wheel damage, or an object embedded in the tread. A severe defect calls for a spare or professional help, not repeated inflation.
- Use the correct target. Read the cold-tire pressure on the placard or in the owner’s manual. Do not substitute the sidewall maximum. If the tires are warm from driving, understand that the reading may differ from the cold specification; make a conservative decision and recheck when the tires are cold.
- Connect the inflator. Fit the hose to the valve stem securely, attach a charged compatible battery, and set the desired pressure using the inflator’s controls and the product manual. Keep the hose and cable away from hot, moving, or sharp parts.
- Start and monitor. Let the digital gauge guide the process and stay with the vehicle. The automatic shutoff can stop at the selected setting, but it does not detect a puncture or confirm that the tire is roadworthy.
- Recheck and compare. Remove the hose carefully, measure the pressure with the separate gauge, and compare it with the vehicle specification. Check the valve for leakage and inspect the tire again before driving slowly to a safe location or service point.
How to approach a jump-start safely
The jump starter should be treated as an optional emergency device, not as a substitute for diagnosing the vehicle. Start with the owner’s manual: identify the approved positive and negative connection points, the required order, and any instructions for vehicles with hybrid, start-stop, or auxiliary battery systems. If the manual is unavailable or the instructions are unclear, call for help rather than improvising.
- Position the vehicle safely. Park away from traffic where possible, set the parking brake, switch off accessories, and keep people clear of belts, fans, and other moving parts.
- Confirm the battery condition. Do not connect to a cracked, leaking, swollen, or frozen battery. A jump starter cannot make a mechanically failed engine or damaged wiring safe.
- Check the tool and vehicle limits. Confirm that the engine falls within the manufacturer’s stated capacity and that the battery installed in the jump starter is the model approved for that tool.
- Follow the vehicle-specific connection sequence. Attach the cables only to the points and in the order stated by the vehicle manual. The P7101A’s anti-spark and reverse-polarity features are protective functions, not permission to ignore that sequence.
- Attempt the start as directed. Use the manual’s limits for each attempt and pause if the vehicle does not respond. Repeated attempts can drain the tool battery or indicate a fault that requires service.
- Disconnect and secure the equipment. Remove the cables in the prescribed order, switch off the jump starter, and let the vehicle’s charging system be checked if the battery was deeply discharged or the problem recurs.
How to choose and store the battery
Do not choose by amp-hour marketing alone
The available information does not establish an ideal battery capacity for a long-term in-vehicle emergency kit. A larger capacity may sound attractive, but the correct choice depends on the exact tool, the number of tasks you expect, the battery’s physical fit, and the storage instructions for that battery model. Select a battery that the tool documentation explicitly supports and that you can keep charged.
Check model-level compatibility
The 18V ONE+ platform spans more than 300 products according to RYOBI, but that platform statement does not guarantee universal fit across every model or generation. Read the tool listing and battery manual together. If you are buying the PCL001B and P7101A as a pair, verify that the same battery model is approved for both rather than assuming that one platform label settles the question.

Plan for vehicle temperatures
The reviewed product information does not establish a single storage-temperature limit for every battery model. Do not invent one. Consult the exact battery manual before leaving a pack in a vehicle, especially in direct sun, a freezing climate, or a closed trunk. A practical approach is to carry the charged battery on the trip and remove it when the vehicle will be parked for long periods outside the manual’s stated conditions.
The roadside equipment RYOBI tools cannot replace
NHTSA’s May 29, 2025 road-trip advisory treats the roadside kit as a system rather than a toolbox. Organize the following items so they can be reached without standing in a traffic lane:
- Communication: a charged phone, charging cable, and vehicle-compatible power source.
- Visibility: flashlight, warning devices, and reflective clothing or material where appropriate.
- Personal protection: gloves and a first-aid kit.
- Tire and lifting equipment: tire-pressure gauge, usable spare or the vehicle’s approved tire-mobility system, jack, and a ground mat.
- Basic resilience: simple repair tools, drinking water, food, and emergency blankets.
Before departure, inspect tire tread and sidewalls, verify cold pressures, and check the vehicle’s other systems as recommended in the advisory. Review the owner’s manual for driver-assistance features and for any restrictions on roadside repairs. A power tool may shorten an inflation task, but it does not make working beside traffic safe.
Common problems and the right response
The inflator runs but pressure does not rise
Stop and check the hose-to-valve connection, the battery seating, the selected pressure, and the tire for a visible puncture or damaged valve. If air is escaping faster than the inflator can add it, inflation is not a repair. Fit the spare or contact roadside assistance.

The pressure reading seems wrong
Compare the inflator display with a separate tire gauge, verify that you are using the placard’s cold-tire value, and inspect the valve connection for leakage. Never switch to the sidewall maximum simply because it is the largest number printed on the tire.
The jump starter does not start the engine
Stop repeated attempts. Recheck the vehicle manual’s connection points and engine-capacity requirement, confirm that the jump-starter battery is charged and compatible, and consider that the fault may be the starter, fuel system, charging system, or wiring rather than the battery. Arrange professional assistance if the manual’s procedure does not resolve the issue.
The battery was left in a hot car
Do not guess whether it remains safe or usable. Follow the battery manual’s temperature guidance, allow the pack to return to the permitted range if instructed, and inspect it for swelling, damage, or leakage. Replace or professionally evaluate a damaged pack.

Large vehicle used on remote routes
Carry the PCL001B for routine pressure corrections and consider the P7101A if the vehicle falls within the stated engine limit and the manual supports jump-starting. Pack extra water, food, blankets, communication power, and visibility equipment because waiting for assistance may take longer. A second battery can be useful only if it is compatible and can be stored within its manual’s limits; there is no universal capacity recommendation.
Driver who already owns several 18V ONE+ tools
Inventory the exact battery models, test each selected battery on the emergency tool, and designate one charged pack for the vehicle instead of assuming every pack will fit. Keep the inflator accessories and jump-starter cables together, and rotate the designated battery through normal charging practice so it is not forgotten.
Pre-trip and seasonal maintenance
- Check cold tire pressure and tire condition before every long trip.
- Inspect the inflator hose, connector, gauge display, and accessory storage for damage.
- Charge the designated battery according to its manual and verify that it seats correctly in the tool.
- Review the jump-start procedure in the vehicle manual after servicing, replacing, or modifying the battery.
- Confirm that the spare, jack, ground mat, warning devices, flashlight, first-aid kit, food, water, blankets, and phone charger are present.
- Remove batteries from vehicle storage when the manual’s temperature or storage conditions cannot be met.
Final decision
For a compact road-trip emergency kit, buy the PCL001B first: it directly addresses low car-tire pressure and includes the gauge and automatic shutoff features RYOBI specifies. Add the P7101A only for a separately evaluated 12-volt jump-start need, after checking the vehicle manual and the engine-size limit. Choose the P739 when a larger roadside compressor fits your storage plan. Whichever tool you select, carry a verified compatible charged battery and complete the kit with the communication, visibility, medical, lifting, food, water, and blanket supplies identified by NHTSA.
