The right Linux remote-desktop product is determined first by the session you need, not by a vendor’s “Linux supported” label. Decide whether staff will share an already active desktop, start a headless session, authenticate at a graphical login screen, or provide unattended cross-platform support. Then test that workflow on the exact distribution, desktop environment, display server and release you operate. GNOME Remote Desktop is the natural starting point for GNOME-integrated sharing and remote-login modes; RustDesk is a candidate for cross-platform control with optional self-hosting; AnyDesk is a commercial option with vendor-documented Linux distribution coverage. None should be standardized until its login, Wayland/X11, identity, network and recovery behavior has been verified on representative endpoints.

Start with the remote session your team actually needs

“Remote desktop” describes several different operations. They have different authentication boundaries, desktop behavior and compatibility requirements. Write the required workflow down before comparing products.

Share the active user’s desktop

A support technician connects to the graphical session that a user has already opened locally. Red Hat’s RHEL 9 documentation describes GNOME screen sharing as a single-user connection to the currently logged-in GNOME session. Its procedure configures password protection. This is appropriate when a user is present or has already logged in and needs help with the same session they can see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not turn that procedure into a general remote-login design. It is specifically documented for RHEL 9 and GNOME, and the guide warns that exporting a root VNC session is unsafe and that some session elements may not work as expected. Use an ordinary user session and a named account instead.

Start a headless desktop session

A headless workflow creates or exposes a graphical session when no monitor is attached and no desktop session is currently active. GNOME Remote Desktop documents a single-user headless mode. SUSE’s SLES 16.0 guide says its described headless mode does not require a GPU. That does not guarantee identical behavior on another distribution, GNOME release or display stack; confirm the package and desktop versions before making headless access a production dependency.

Reach the graphical login screen

Remote login is a separate mode: the connection reaches the display manager, the user authenticates, and that user’s desktop session starts. GNOME Remote Desktop documents a headless remote-login mode. SUSE describes system-wide credentials for reaching the graphical login screen, followed by each user’s own credentials. This two-stage design is materially different from sharing one logged-in user’s desktop, so document who is allowed to pass the first gate and how those credentials are rotated.

Provide unattended, cross-platform support

Unattended support normally means a technician can reach a machine after logout or reboot, often from a different operating system. RustDesk provides a client that can connect through public or self-hosted servers, but its Linux documentation says Wayland support is experimental and that login-screen access using Wayland is unsupported. If the requirement includes access after reboot or before login, the guide describes changing the GDM login screen to X11. Validate that change against your security baseline and desktop-management policy rather than assuming it is harmless.

Build a compatibility profile for every endpoint

Record the following fields for each Linux image you intend to support:

  • Distribution and exact release, such as RHEL 9 or SLES 16.0.
  • Desktop environment and version, including whether GNOME is the system’s login desktop.
  • Display server: Wayland, X11 or a policy-controlled choice between them.
  • Required package format and update channel.
  • Whether a physical monitor, GPU, logged-in user or active session is present.
  • Reboot, logout and sleep behavior that remote staff must recover from.
  • Clipboard, file-transfer, audio, multi-monitor, scaling and peripheral requirements.

“Supports Linux” is not a complete compatibility statement. A client may install successfully yet fail to capture a Wayland session, reach a login manager, create a headless desktop or reconnect after reboot. Keep a support matrix tied to image versions, not just product names.

What the main documented options do

Option Documented strengths Important qualification Investigate before adoption
GNOME Remote Desktop GNOME-integrated remote assistance, single-user headless desktop and headless remote-login modes; RDP and VNC backends; PipeWire pixel streaming, libei input events and Mutter remote-desktop management. GNOME states that not every operating mode is supported by every protocol backend. Target GNOME/distribution version, backend for each workflow, certificates and credentials, firewall exposure and viewer compatibility.
RustDesk Cross-platform remote control; Linux packages in deb, rpm, Arch and openSUSE formats, plus AppImage and Flatpak; public or self-hosted rendezvous and relay infrastructure. Wayland support is experimental since RustDesk 1.2.0; Wayland login-screen access is unsupported. Desktop-specific behavior, X11 requirement for login-screen workflows, identity controls, relay design, edition features and server operations.
AnyDesk Commercial Linux offering; vendor page lists Ubuntu, Red Hat and openSUSE, plus a generic version for other systems; an On-Premises option is advertised. Linux coverage, TLS 1.3 and RSA 2048 are vendor claims, not independent security or performance results. Exact release matrix, licensing, administration, identity policy, support, data flows and whether the On-Premises design meets internal requirements.

Evaluate GNOME Remote Desktop when the desktop is GNOME

GNOME Remote Desktop is the most desktop-integrated candidate when your fleet already standardizes on GNOME. The project describes three relevant use cases: remote assistance, a single-user headless desktop and a headless remote-login mode. Its architecture uses PipeWire for pixels, libei for input and Mutter’s remote-desktop API for management.

Protocol selection matters. The project has RDP and VNC backends, and explicitly says that all modes are not supported by all backends. Select the mode first, then confirm the backend that implements it on your GNOME version. A viewer that works for screen sharing is not automatically suitable for GDM login or headless access.

RHEL 9 sharing boundaries

For RHEL 9, Red Hat’s documented screen-sharing procedure assumes the user is already logged into GNOME. It shows how to require a password and notes that VNC encryption can be disabled for compatibility with clients that lack encryption. Disabling encryption should be treated as a compatibility exception requiring an approved protected network, not as a secure default. The same guide says a root VNC session is unsafe and may have malfunctioning session elements; never use root export as a shortcut.

SLES 16.0 remote login

SUSE’s SLES 16.0 documentation describes GDM integration in which a system-wide credential gate gets the connection to the graphical login screen and each user then enters their own credentials. It identifies GNOME Connections, Remmina or another RDP-capable viewer as clients. Test both credential stages, failed-login handling and what happens when the user logs out, because those details determine whether help-desk staff can recover a machine without local access.

Evaluate RustDesk for cross-platform control or self-hosting

RustDesk’s Linux guide lists packages for major distribution families and provides AppImage and Flatpak choices. Package format affects fleet updates and policy enforcement, so pick the format that fits your existing software-management system rather than distributing ad-hoc binaries.

Wayland is the key Linux caveat. RustDesk documents Wayland support as experimental since version 1.2.0 and says login-screen access through Wayland is not supported. If unattended access must survive logout or reboot, the guide describes switching the GDM login screen to X11. Treat that as a tested configuration requirement: verify the exact RustDesk and operating-system versions, confirm that your organization permits X11 for this purpose, and retest after desktop or display-manager updates.

Choose between RustDesk server editions

Edition Documented characteristics Operational consequence
Server OSS Free, open-source backend using hbbs and hbbr; manual deployment and configuration; community support. Your team operates deployment, networking, updates, monitoring, backups and incident response.
Server Pro Web console, API, OIDC, LDAP, 2FA, device management, access control and multiple relay management are listed in RustDesk documentation. Evaluate the additional administration and identity features against licensing and support terms.

Self-hosting moves ID/rendezvous and relay infrastructure under your organization’s control; it does not remove operational work. Provision the Linux host, open only the ports your design uses, patch both the server and clients, monitor availability, protect credentials and document disaster recovery. RustDesk’s deployment article is vendor guidance, so confirm port and topology details against current documentation and your security policy. A small Linux host can be sufficient for a narrowly scoped server, but hardware sizing and capacity should be established from your concurrent-session requirements rather than assumed.

Evaluate AnyDesk as a commercial alternative

AnyDesk’s Linux product page lists Ubuntu, Red Hat and openSUSE and mentions a generic version for other systems. It also advertises TLS 1.3, RSA 2048 asymmetric key exchange and an On-Premises option that can use an organization’s own networking solutions without leaving its intranet. These are statements by the vendor, not an independent cryptographic audit or comparative performance test.

Ask for the exact supported-release and session matrix before purchase. Confirm whether unattended access, login-screen access, centralized policies, audit records, identity integration and support response are included in the commercial tier you are considering. Establish where connection metadata and relay traffic go, and whether the On-Premises option changes those data flows in the way your compliance requirements demand.

  1. Prepare a test image. Record distribution, desktop, display server, package source and software versions. Create named test accounts; do not share a root credential.
  2. Test active-session sharing. Log into the desktop locally, connect remotely, confirm keyboard and pointer input, and verify that the local user sees the same session. Test password rejection and session termination.
  3. Test headless startup. Disconnect the monitor or use a machine without one, start the documented headless mode, and check display creation, scaling, clipboard and reconnect behavior.
  4. Test login-screen access. Reboot and connect before a user logs in. Confirm the system-wide gate, per-user authentication, logout and a second login. For RustDesk, include the documented X11 configuration if login-screen access is required.
  5. Test failure recovery. Interrupt the network, suspend the client, kill and restart the viewer, and reboot the endpoint. Record whether a technician can recover without local help.
  6. Test fleet controls. Verify device enrollment, account removal, policy changes, audit visibility and software updates. Test the exact identity provider and 2FA path you will deploy.
  7. Measure user experience. On representative networks, check latency, display scaling, multi-monitor layout, clipboard and file transfer, audio, printing and peripherals. No comparative hands-on performance results are provided here, so your own measurements must drive the final choice.

Design authentication and network boundaries deliberately

Keep session boundaries explicit. Screen sharing should authenticate the specific user session; remote login should distinguish the system-level gate from the user’s desktop credentials. Prefer individual identities and immediate off-boarding over shared passwords. If a product offers approval prompts or device-level policy, decide when technicians may connect without a user present and record that decision.

Encryption claims do not establish overall security. Evaluate authentication, authorization, update delivery, logging, credential storage, relay exposure and incident response separately. AnyDesk’s TLS 1.3 and RSA 2048 statements describe the vendor’s advertised transport and key exchange; they do not independently establish safe defaults or resistance to every attack. Likewise, disabling VNC encryption for RHEL 9 client compatibility should never be treated as a universal recommendation.

Do not expose a remote-desktop service directly to the public internet without an organization-specific, source-backed design. Decide whether connections use a VPN, internal network, controlled relay or another approved path; then document firewall openings, ownership and monitoring. For self-hosted RustDesk, assign responsibility for the hbbs rendezvous service and hbbr relay, backups, patching and certificate or credential rotation.

Common failure modes and their fixes

The client connects but shows a blank or unusable desktop

Check whether the endpoint is on Wayland, whether the selected product supports that mode and whether the workflow is active-session sharing or headless access. A package that launches is not proof that capture and input work. Reproduce on X11 only if the product’s documentation requires it and your policy allows that configuration.

Remote access stops at the login screen

Verify that login-screen access is a supported mode, not merely desktop sharing. RustDesk documents that Wayland login-screen access is unsupported; its documented workaround involves changing GDM to X11. GNOME Remote Desktop’s remote-login mode and SUSE’s GDM procedure must be configured and tested separately from single-user sharing.

A viewer works for one GNOME mode but not another

GNOME states that backend support varies by mode. Recheck the RDP or VNC backend selected for the required workflow and use a viewer compatible with that backend. Do not infer that a successful sharing test proves headless or login-manager support.

Support staff cannot reconnect after reboot

Determine whether the machine is waiting at GDM, whether the display server is supported, whether the service starts before login and whether firewall or relay paths survive reboot. Test the complete reboot sequence, including both credential stages, rather than testing only a warm connection.

Make the final choice

Choose GNOME Remote Desktop when your fleet is GNOME-centered and the distribution documentation matches the required sharing, headless or remote-login workflow. Investigate RustDesk when cross-platform control, optional control of rendezvous and relay infrastructure, or its documented Pro administration features are central; budget for the Linux Wayland and login-screen limitations and for operating a self-hosted service if you choose that route. Investigate AnyDesk when a commercial offering, broad vendor-listed Linux coverage or an On-Premises networking option fits your procurement and control requirements, while verifying every security, licensing and support assumption with the vendor.

The deciding evidence should be a reproducible test on your own images: the exact desktop and display server, the login path, identity controls, network design, reboot recovery and fleet administration. Product labels and marketing claims cannot substitute for that session-level proof.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Linux remote-desktop tool that supports Wayland also provide remote login after reboot?

Not necessarily. Wayland capture and login-manager access are separate capabilities. RustDesk documents Wayland support as experimental and excludes Wayland login-screen access; verify the exact product and display-server combination for pre-login access.

Should a team use root for remote VNC access?

No. Red Hat’s RHEL 9 guidance says a root VNC session is unsafe and that some session elements may not work as expected. Use named user accounts with the documented authentication controls.

Is self-hosting automatically more secure than using a vendor service?

No. Self-hosting changes who operates the rendezvous and relay infrastructure. Your team then owns deployment, firewalling, patching, monitoring, backups, credential protection and incident response; security depends on that implementation.
