There is no verified, apples-to-apples consumer uptime ranking that proves one cloud storage service is the most reliable in 2026. A practical shortlist is Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Apple iCloud, and Sync.com—but the right choice depends on how you use your devices, share files, secure your account, and recover deleted or changed data. For important files, use cloud storage alongside an independent backup rather than treating sync as a backup.
What does reliable cloud storage mean?
Reliability is more than whether an app opens. It includes whether you can access files when needed, recover deleted or overwritten data, protect your account, and use the service across your devices. A provider’s security descriptions or infrastructure uptime target alone cannot establish which consumer service is most reliable.
There is no comparable, current consumer uptime statistic covering all five services. In particular, Google Cloud Storage’s published service-level objectives apply to its covered cloud infrastructure storage service—not consumer Google Drive. The current Google Cloud Storage SLA lists a 99.95% monthly uptime objective for standard storage in multi-region or dual-region locations outside Mexico and Stockholm, and 99.9% for standard regional storage within its stated scope and exceptions. These figures are not a Google Drive uptime promise. Microsoft also publishes separate service-level information for online services; any commitment must be interpreted for the applicable product and subscription.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSo treat the five services below as options to assess, not as a measured ranking. For each, check the terms and settings that apply to your own account.

Which five cloud storage services should you consider?
Google Drive: useful recovery information, with limits on file history
Google Drive’s Trash retains deleted items for 30 days, according to Google’s help documentation accessed October 7, 2026. For non-Google-native files, a version may be permanently deleted after 30 days or 100 newer versions unless you mark it “Keep forever.” That makes version settings important if you rely on Drive to recover older file states.
Google also documents a bulk restore flow for ransomware recovery and advises disconnecting syncing devices during recovery. A restore process is not a guarantee that every file can be recovered, so follow Google’s current guidance for your account and act promptly when you notice unwanted changes.
Rank #2
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Microsoft OneDrive: consider its recovery tools and your Microsoft setup
Microsoft documents OneDrive version history and recycle-bin restoration. Its service assurance materials also describe encryption and resiliency measures for OneDrive and SharePoint, including regional storage and version-integrity protections. Some of those details depend on configuration and the Microsoft 365 service context, so they should not be assumed to apply identically to every consumer plan or setting.
OneDrive may be a natural fit if your devices and work already revolve around Microsoft services. Before relying on a particular recovery feature, check that it is included in your plan and enabled for the files and account you use.
Rank #3
- Capacity Display Variance: 250GB external ssd often appears as around 232GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 250 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity

- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Dropbox: security documentation is not an uptime comparison
Dropbox publishes information about encryption and account and service protections. It also documents an advanced-encryption option with administrator and key-management details. These are relevant to evaluating security controls, but they do not demonstrate higher consumer uptime or file durability than another provider.
If you are considering Dropbox for shared files or sensitive data, review the current feature terms for your account type and understand who controls any encryption keys involved.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive

Apple iCloud: assess it against your Apple-device needs
iCloud is a shortlist option for people considering cloud storage within Apple’s ecosystem. The current recovery windows, uptime terms, and plan-specific protections are not established here at the same level of detail as the Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox documentation above. Verify the terms for your plan and the devices you use before choosing it as the sole home for important files.

Sync.com is another option to assess, particularly by reviewing its current security, recovery, and plan terms. Current recovery windows, uptime terms, and plan-specific protections are not established here in comparable detail. Confirm those details directly for the plan you would use rather than assuming the service offers a particular retention period or recovery guarantee.

How should you choose between them?
Start with the way you need to use and recover files, rather than looking for a single reliability score.
- Check recovery first. Find the deleted-file retention period, version-history rules, and any limits tied to your plan. Confirm how to restore both one file and a larger set of files.
- Match the service to your devices and workflow. Consider the operating systems and productivity tools you already use, and whether you need collaboration or simple file access.
- Understand the security model. Read what the provider documents about encryption, account protection, and key management. Security claims do not by themselves tell you how quickly you can regain account access or restore a file.
- Check the promise that applies to your account. Distinguish consumer plan terms from enterprise agreements and infrastructure SLAs. A figure for a different product or subscription is not your account’s availability guarantee.
- Consider how you will keep another copy. If files matter, choose a backup method you can maintain and test independently of the cloud sync service.
Why cloud sync is not a complete backup
Sync keeps files aligned across locations, which is useful, but unwanted changes or deletions can also propagate. A version history or recycle bin can help with some incidents, but its retention rules and configuration determine what you can recover.
CISA recommends the 3-2-1 backup approach: keep three copies of important data, on two different media, with one copy off-site. One practical application is to keep your working files in cloud storage, maintain a separate local copy on an external drive, and keep another copy in a different location. A portable external SSD can serve as that local medium; this is an example of applying the guidance, not a product endorsement.
- Make a separate copy of files you cannot afford to lose, rather than relying only on the synced folder.
- Disconnect backup media when you are not backing up, so it is less exposed to an incident affecting your connected devices.
- Periodically restore a sample file from the backup and confirm that it opens. A backup you have not tested may not be usable when needed.
A 2023 USENIX Security study found meaningful differences in cloud-provider versioning behavior in a ransomware context. It is useful background, not an audit of how these products work in 2026. Pair general findings with current documentation for the service and plan you actually use.
What is the most reliable cloud storage service?
The available evidence does not establish a single most reliable consumer service. Google Drive has specific, documented Trash and version-history rules; Microsoft documents recovery tools and resiliency measures whose applicability can depend on plan and configuration; Dropbox documents security controls, including an advanced-encryption option. For iCloud and Sync.com, verify current plan-specific recovery and protection terms before relying on particular features. Whichever service fits your workflow, keep an independent backup of important files and test that you can restore it.
